Effect Of Photobiomodulation On Vinblastine-Poisoned Murine Hers Cells, Brian D. Hodgson, B. Pyszka, Michele M. Henry, E. Buchmann, Harry T. Whelan

School of Dentistry Faculty Research and Publications

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of near-infrared (NIR) photobiomodulation on the proliferation and glutathione levels in murine Hertwig's epithelial root sheath (HERS) cells after poisoning with vinblastine. Background: Photobiomodulation has been shown to improve wound healing in a number of animal models. There have been no studies on the effect of photobiomodulation on cancer-related chemotherapy injury to the cells that initiate tooth root growth. Materials and Methods: Control groups consisted of murine HERS cells without vinblastine (VB−) and cells with vinblastine at 10, 20, and 30 ng/mL (VB10, VB20, and VB30). Experimental groups consisted …

Data sources

Publications were sought using Medline, and searches were made by hand of the journals Clinical Oral Implants Research, International Journal of Periodontics and Restorative Dentistry, Journal of Periodontology, Journal of Clinical Periodontology and the International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Implants, along with reference lists of identified articles.

Study selection

Titles and abstracts were initially screened by two independent reviewers to identify prospective or retrospective longitudinal cohort studies or controlled studies reporting on implant supported cantilever fixed dental prostheses (ICFDP) with a mean followup period of at least 5 years. A clinical examination had to be performed …

Another One Bites The Dust!, Gabriela Salazar Jan 2010

Another One Bites The Dust!, Gabriela Salazar

Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)

The contemporary landscape is rife with ruins, from circumscribed tourist attractions to urban decay and demolition sites. When examined, our aesthetic experience of these sites ranges from historical distancing to the sublime and, when found in our local communities (e.g., Providence, RI), to discomfort, displacement, and horror. In particular, this paper is interested in how certain forms of demolition, from slow and messy to explosively dramatic, can be understood as compressed and heightened experiences of the traditional sublime ruin. Additionally, as contemporary artists often use the vernacular of the ruin in their work, this paper considers how three artists, Gordon …

Forced Eviction And Resettlement In Cambodia: Case Studies From Phnom Penh, Chi Adanna Mgbako, Rijie Ernie Gao, Elizabeth Joynes, Anna Cave, Jessica Mikhailevich

Faculty Scholarship

This Article culminates a project undertaken by the Walter Leitner International Human Rights Clinic (“Leitner Clinic”) at Fordham Law School to examine the effects of land resettlement on communities that were forcibly evicted or are at risk of forced eviction from their homes, and, in particular, the effects of forced evictions on the Boeung Kak Lake community in central Phnom Penh and on people living with HIV/AIDS (“PLWHA”). This Article is based on field research the Leitner Clinic conducted in Cambodia in the fall of 2008. While in Cambodia, the Leitner Clinic interviewed families from four different communities: resettlement camps …

Recovery Of An Endangered Provision: Untangling And Reviving Critical Habitat Under The Engangered Species Act, Kalyani Robbins Jan 2010

Recovery Of An Endangered Provision: Untangling And Reviving Critical Habitat Under The Engangered Species Act, Kalyani Robbins

Akron Law Faculty Publications

There has been long-term confusion among courts, agencies, developers, and environmental organizations regarding the legal, environmental, and economic impacts of designating critical habitat for species listed as threatened or endangered under the ESA. At the heart of this difficulty has been a need to understand the degree to which the protections for critical habitat can be distinguished from those for listed species generally. Critical habitat is primarily protected via section 7’s requirement that federal agencies consult with the Fish & Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service to determine whether a proposed federal action either jeopardizes a listed species …

The Influence Of Abraham Lincoln On The Supreme Court's Interpretation Of The Constitutional Principles Of Liberty And Equality, Wilson Huhn Jan 2010

The Influence Of Abraham Lincoln On The Supreme Court's Interpretation Of The Constitutional Principles Of Liberty And Equality, Wilson Huhn

Akron Law Faculty Publications

The purpose of this article is to demonstrate that the Supreme Court has embraced Abraham Lincoln’s transcendent understanding of the principles of liberty and equality – transcendent in the sense that these principles are considered to be timeless, universal, and morally binding. The article briefly summarizes the Transcendental Movement, sets forth Lincoln’s understanding of liberty and equality, and describes how, in the modern era, the Supreme Court has “constantly approximated” the principles that Lincoln believed that this country is dedicated to.

Abolishing The Missing-Claim Rule For Judicial Cancellations, Ryan G. Vacca Jan 2010

Abolishing The Missing-Claim Rule For Judicial Cancellations, Ryan G. Vacca

Akron Law Faculty Publications

This article questions why some courts that have already found a federally registered trademark invalid refuse to cancel the registration despite having the authority to do so under § 37 of the Lanham Act. Examination of cases involving judicial cancellations reveals that a failure to assert cancellation as a claim, as opposed to a variety of other methods of requesting cancellation, is the reason courts refuse to exercise their power under § 37 - referred to as the missing-claim rule. This article criticizes the missing-claim rule as illogical and frustrating trademark law's purpose and proposes the missing-claim rule be abolished, …

Mass Privatisation And The Post-Communist Mortality Crisis: Is There Really A Relationship?, John S. Earle, Scott G. Gehlbach Jan 2010

Mass Privatisation And The Post-Communist Mortality Crisis: Is There Really A Relationship?, John S. Earle, Scott G. Gehlbach

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

We reexamine the recent, well-publicized claim that "rapid mass privatisation [of state-owned enterprises]...was a crucial determinant of differences in adult mortality trends in postcommunist countries" (Stuckler, King and McKee, 2009). Our analysis shows that the estimated correlation of privatization and mortality in country-level data is not robust to recomputing the mass-privatization measure, to assuming a short lag for economic policies to affect mortality, and to controlling for country-specific mortality trends. Further, in an analysis of the determinants of mortality in Russian regions, we find no evidence that privatization increased mortality during the early 1990s. Finally, we reanalyze the relationship between …

Reach Your Campus, Reach The World: Prioritizing Our Mission To And Through Those In Schools, Steve Case Jan 2010

Reach Your Campus, Reach The World: Prioritizing Our Mission To And Through Those In Schools, Steve Case

All Books

DESCRIPTION

An estimated 70% of Seventh-day Adventist college and university students attend non-church sponsored schools. Many of these students are not finding a spiritual community they can connect with, creating a tremendous need for public campus ministry.

How can the Seventh-day Adventist Church intentionally foster biblical community on public college and university campuses? How can we reach both Adventist and non-Adventist students? How should we conduct evangelism to fit a changing world? These and many other questions were addressed at the 2009 180º Symposium held on the campus of Andrews University.

Papers presented at the 180º Symposium covered three major …

Good Things Come To Those Who Wait - Reconsidering Indeterminate And Indefinite Detention As Tools In U.S. Immigration Policy, Michael S. Vastine Jan 2010

Good Things Come To Those Who Wait - Reconsidering Indeterminate And Indefinite Detention As Tools In U.S. Immigration Policy, Michael S. Vastine

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

This article will primarily focus on illustrating examples of lengthy detention that surely seem unending to the immigrants involved, if not "indefinite" as determined by the U.S. Supreme Court. I will address all other aspects of detention more fully than actual "indefinite" detention. Detention is one of many tools at the disposal of DHS to assure orderly immigration and provide predictable consequences for violators of the United States immigration system. I hope to illustrate the frequently coercive affects of the detention scheme and argue that in some, if not many, contexts detention actually impedes the orderly administration of justice, despite …

Changes In The Wind: How Increased Detention Rates, New Medical Care Standards, And Ice Policy Shifts Alter The Debate On Immigrant Detainee Healthcare, Angela Morehouse

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

This paper provides an analysis of the recent changes in immigration detainee healthcare and argues that ICE is taking significant and proactive steps to address the systemic failures of the prior regime. Briefly discussed at the conclusion of this paper is ICE's significant August 6, 2009 announcement that it is enacting additional major reforms to the immigration detention system. This critical development lends credence to this paper's argument that ICE is developing a workable framework for providing appropriate healthcare to immigrant detainees. However, as the announcement came after this paper had been written, a detailed discussion of how those changes …

A Comparative Approach To Enforced Disappearances In The Inter-American Court Of Human Rights And The European Court Of Human Rights Jurisprudence, Ophelia Claude Jan 2010

A Comparative Approach To Enforced Disappearances In The Inter-American Court Of Human Rights And The European Court Of Human Rights Jurisprudence, Ophelia Claude

Intercultural Human Rights Law Review

Taking into account the current tremendous caseload before the European Court related to enforced disappearances, this article seeks to make a comparative analysis between the Inter-American Court and the European Court jurisprudence. Part I addresses the various difficulties concerning evidence in disappearance cases. It examines the criteria set up by both courts in terms of admission of evidence and burden of proof, as well as the requisite standard of proof in order to accommodate the difficulties arising in disappearance cases. It underscores the Inter-American Court's willingness to render the standard of evidence more flexible in response to the conundrum faced …

Rethinking Guardianship (Again): Substituted Decision Making As A Violation Of The Integration Mandated Of Title Ii Of The Americans With Disabilities Act, Leslie Salzman Jan 2010

Rethinking Guardianship (Again): Substituted Decision Making As A Violation Of The Integration Mandated Of Title Ii Of The Americans With Disabilities Act, Leslie Salzman

Articles

In every state, when an adult has a diminished capacity to make decisions about personal affairs or property management, a court may transfer the individual’s right to make decisions to a guardian. This Article argues that, in most cases, it would be preferable to support decision making rather than supplant it through guardianship, and then seeks to locate a right to receive such support as a less restrictive alternative to the substituted decision making that characterizes guardianship.

Building on the reasoning in Olmstead v. L.C. and subsequent decisions interpreting the Americans with Disabilities Act’s integration mandate, this Article argues that …

Information Takeout And Delivery: A Case Study Exploring Different Library Service Delivery Models, Mark Aaron Polger Jan 2010

Information Takeout And Delivery: A Case Study Exploring Different Library Service Delivery Models, Mark Aaron Polger

Publications and Research

This article explores the transformation from the traditional service delivery model of a hospital library (patrons come to the library to request materials and information) to a more dynamic service delivery model where library staff deliver all services on clinical floors, participate in clinical rounds, and teach in staff and physician offices. This model is similar to the “informationist role.” The article discusses the “Information Takeout and Delivery Service” model and includes usage statistics comparing 2005 to 2008. It also shows that data from a questionnaire of 50 library users who were identified as “active library users” illustrate that this …
