Understanding The Diminishing Academic Advantage Of Full-Day Kindergarten, Randall S. Davies, Susan Cress Jan 2010

Understanding The Diminishing Academic Advantage Of Full-Day Kindergarten, Randall S. Davies, Susan Cress

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

Most people agree that young children benefit academically from attending kindergarten; however, some research suggests that any academic advantage attributed to attending full-day kindergarten compared to half-day programs will disappear as early as third grade. Based on the results of this study which looked at students in typical classroom settings, a likely explanation for this is that teachers often provide considerable remedial assistance to low achieving students. Once students meet benchmark expectations, instruction tends to broaden to other instructional objectives. We also found that in practice distinguishing between full- and half-day programs based solely on time in school is problematic. …

Single-Case Designs And Qualitative Methods: Applying A Mixed Methods Research Perspective, John H. Hitchcock, Bonnie K. Nastasi, Meredith Summerville Jan 2010

Single-Case Designs And Qualitative Methods: Applying A Mixed Methods Research Perspective, John H. Hitchcock, Bonnie K. Nastasi, Meredith Summerville

Mid-Western Educational Researcher

The purpose of this conceptual paper is to describe a design that mixes single-case (sometimes referred to as single-subject) and qualitative methods, hereafter referred to as a single-case mixed methods design (SCD-MM). Minimal attention has been given to the topic of applying qualitative methods to SCD work in the literature. These two approaches potentially can be integrated using a mixed methods perspective to yield a powerful approach for understanding localized causality and describing intervention application. The SCD-MM also can be used within the context of action research if the purpose of such work is to investigate a causal question.

Meal Parameters And Vagal Gastrointestinal Afferents In Mice That Experienced Early Postnatal Overnutrition, Jessica Biddinger, Edward A. Fox Jan 2010

Meal Parameters And Vagal Gastrointestinal Afferents In Mice That Experienced Early Postnatal Overnutrition, Jessica Biddinger, Edward A. Fox

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Early postnatal overnutrition disrupts satiety without altering vagal gastrointestinal afferents. PHYSIOL BEHAV 00(0) 000-000, 2010. Early postnatal overnutrition results in a predisposition to develop obesity due in part to hypothalamic and sympathetic dysfunction. Potential involvement of another major regulatory system component - the vagus nerve - has not been examined. Moreover, feeding disturbances have rarely been investigated prior to development of obesity when confounds due to obesity are minimized. To examine these issues, litters were culled on the day of birth to create small litters (SL; overnutrition), or normal-size litters (NL; normal nutrition). Body weight, fat pad weight, meal patterns, …

Sensitization Of Behavioral Response To Maternal Separation: Persistence Of The Effect And Role Of Proinflammatory Activity, Jessie Caraway Jan 2010

Sensitization Of Behavioral Response To Maternal Separation: Persistence Of The Effect And Role Of Proinflammatory Activity, Jessie Caraway

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

Maternal separation in guinea pigs produces a biphasic response consisting of an active behavior phase followed by a phase of passive behavior (crouched stance, piloerection, and eye closure). Previous studies suggest that pro-inflammatory cytokines mediate passive behavior during the passive phase. It is also known that guinea pig pups separated on two consecutive days show a significant increase (sensitization) in full passive behavior on the second day. The current study examined the persistence and role of pro-inflammatory activity in the sensitization of passive behavior in maternally separated guinea pigs. Guinea pig pups were assigned to one of four groups differing …

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlordibenzo-P-Dioxin Mediated Immune Suppression Through Interactions At The 3'Immunoglobulin Heavy Chain Regulatory Region Enhancers, David Harold Ellis Jan 2010

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlordibenzo-P-Dioxin Mediated Immune Suppression Through Interactions At The 3'Immunoglobulin Heavy Chain Regulatory Region Enhancers, David Harold Ellis

Browse all Theses and Dissertations

2,3,7,8-Tetrachlordibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) is a potent toxin which inhibits the antibody response of B cells. The 3'IgHRR which is involved in transcriptional regulation of the heavy-chain polypeptide of antibodies is inhibited by TCDD. The hs1,2 enhancer region, isolated from the 3'IgHRR, is also inhibited while the isolated hs4 is activated by TCDD. This project sought to determine if that dichotomy in effects results from interactions at enhancer-specific binding sites for AhR, thought to mediate transcriptional effects of TCDD, and NFκB, a transcription factor involved in B cell activation. Here, I report a difference in the effect of TCDD on transcriptional activity …

Smooth Muscle-Specific Expression Of Neurotrophin-3 In The Embryonic And Neonatal Gastrointestinal Tract Of The Mouse, Jennifer Mcadams, Edward A. Fox Jan 2010

Smooth Muscle-Specific Expression Of Neurotrophin-3 In The Embryonic And Neonatal Gastrointestinal Tract Of The Mouse, Jennifer Mcadams, Edward A. Fox

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Neurotrophin-3 (NT-3), which is essential for the survival of a large proportion of vagal sensory neurons, is expressed in the developing gastrointestinal (GI) tract where it could contribute to this survival, to other aspects of vagal afferent development, and to the development of spinal afferents, postganglionic sympathetic neurons and intrinsic neurons. Identifying the functions of this peripheral NT-3 requires a detailed understanding of the localization and timing of its expression in the developing GI tract. Therefore, X-gal staining of embryos and neonates expressing the lacZ reporter gene from the NT-3 locus was used to characterize the spatiotemporal pattern of NT-3 …

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

Rationale Alcohol-use disorders often occur together with anxiety disorders in humans which may be partly due to common inherited genetic factors. Evidence suggests that the endocannabinoid system (ECS) is a promising therapeutic target for the treatment of individuals with anxiety and/or alcohol-use disorders. Objectives The present study assessed the effects of a novel endocannabinoid uptake inhibitor, LY2183240, on anxiety- and alcohol-seeking behaviors in a unique animal model that may represent increased genetic risk to develop co-morbid anxiety and alcohol-use disorders in humans. Mice selectively bred for high alcohol preference (HAP) show greater fear-potentiated startle (FPS) than mice selectively bred for …

Pentylenetetrazol Produces A State-Dependent Conditioned Place Aversion To Alcohol Withdrawal In Mice, Julia Chester, Laran E. Coon

Department of Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications

The purpose of this study was to determine if aversive effects of alcohol withdrawal could be detected in mice using the place conditioning procedure and whether the GABAA receptor antagonist, pentylenetetrazol (PTZ), would increase the aversive effects of alcohol withdrawal and increase the probability of detecting conditioned place aversion. Subjects were alcohol-naïve mice from a specific line selectively bred for low alcohol preference (LAP1; n=91) and were assigned to three groups: alcohol withdrawal, PTZ alone, and PTZ + alcohol withdrawal. On four trials, mice received either a 4.0 g/kg intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection of alcohol (alcohol withdrawal, PTZ + alcohol withdrawal …

Automated Tank Surface Finishing System, Purdue Ect Team Jan 2010

Automated Tank Surface Finishing System, Purdue Ect Team

ECT Fact Sheets Archive

The current finishing techniques are costly and laborious, and they expose workers to significant health and safety risks. The automated tank surface finishing system uses a computer-controlled motion module to refinish the vertical exterior walls of a tank. The module is configurable for both blasting and painting and utilizes conventional surface finishing equipment for these processes. An overspray hood is included to reduce contamination of the surrounding environment during painting. The module attaches to a tank’s wind girts with steel cables, and its position and velocity are controlled by servo-driven hoists.

3-D Cmos Circuits Based On Low-Loss Vertical Interconnects On Parylene-N, Rosa R. Lahiji, Hasan Sharifi, Linda P. B. Katehi, Saeed Mohammadi

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

parylene-N is used as a dielectric layer to create ultra low-loss 3-D vertical interconnects and coplanar waveguide (CPW) transmission lines on a CMOS substrate. Insertion loss of 0.013 dB for a 3-D vertical interconnect through a 15- m-thick parylene-N layer and 0.56 dB/mm for a 50- CPW line on the parylene-N layer (compared to 1.85 dB/mm on a standard CMOS substrate) are measured at 40 GHz. L-shaped, U-shaped, and T-junction CPW structures are also fabricated with underpasses that eliminate the discontinuities arisen from the slot-line mode and are characterized up to 40 GHz. A 3-D low-noise amplifier using these post-processed …

A Method For Delivering Spatio-Temporally Focused Energy To A Dynamically Adjustable Target Along A Waveguiding Structure, J. B. Laflen, T. M. Talavage Jan 2010

A Method For Delivering Spatio-Temporally Focused Energy To A Dynamically Adjustable Target Along A Waveguiding Structure, J. B. Laflen, T. M. Talavage

Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Publications

It is possible to exploit the frequency-dependent velocity dispersion inherent to waveguiding structures to deliver spatio-temporally focused energy to a spatial target anywhere along the longitudinal extent of a waveguide. Such focusing of energy may have application to technologies as varied as nerve stimulation or chemical etching. A waveguide signal that effects this focused energy is conceptualized and derived. The spatial location of the target acted upon by the waveguide signal is demonstrated to be dynamically adjustable with a linear filtering step. Optimal parameters for waveguide signal generation are derived in the general case, allowing for application to a cross …
