Development Of A Framework For The Assessment Of The Role And Impact Of Technology On The Public Procurement Process: An Irish Health Sector Study, Paul Davis
Doctoral
This thesis sets out to examine how the role and impact of technology, in the context of the public procurement process, can be assessed by addressing it as a single bounded structural entity. The thesis specifically examines the procurement process in the Irish Health Sector. This thesis takes the view that context for the procurement process is critical and that adopting a structuration approach to the examination of the process allows for a greater understanding of the role of technology. The thesis is built around a thematic structure which examines the changing relationship between information technology systems and organisational structure. …
Analyzing The Role Of Ck2 And Pp2a In Drosophila Position Effect Variegation, Swati Banerjee
Analyzing The Role Of Ck2 And Pp2a In Drosophila Position Effect Variegation, Swati Banerjee
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The results of the investigation into the role of CK2 and PP2A in Drosophila position effect variegation (PEV) and chromatin modification are presented here. PEV is seen when a gene normally found in euchromatin is placed in close proximity to heterochromatin. The propensity of heterochromatin to spread down the chromosome often results in inactivation of the displaced gene by compaction into heterochromatin. The study presented here utilized two different PEV reporter genes for investigating the role of two posttranslational modifying enzymes, the kinase CK2 and the phosphatase PP2A in chromatin formation. The reporter genes used in this study encode for …
Engendering Meaning Within The High School Experience: A Consideration Of Movement And Dance, Stephanie A. Morris
Engendering Meaning Within The High School Experience: A Consideration Of Movement And Dance, Stephanie A. Morris
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Dance, movement, and kinesthetic learning are among the most powerful ways in coming to know, yet they are amid the most ignored processes at the high school level. Dance has the power to change lives as it offers aesthetic ways of viewing and connecting with the world through its creative, reflective, and imaginative embodied experiences. I have observed these valuable outcomes and address the nature and power of them with the following questions: (1) How has dance and movement influenced my journey? (2) How has this influence affected the high school experience of my students? The heuristic method of qualitative …

Computer-Aided Semantic Signature Identification And Document Classification Via Semantic Signatures, Uday Kiran Para
Computer-Aided Semantic Signature Identification And Document Classification Via Semantic Signatures, Uday Kiran Para
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
In this era of textual data explosion on the World Wide Web, it may be very hard to find documents that are similar to the documents that are of interest to us. To overcome this problem we have developed a type of semantic signature that captures the semantics of target content (text). Semantic signatures from a text/document of interest are derived using the software package semantic signature mining tool (SSMinT). This software package has been developed as a part of this thesis work in collaboration with Sri Ramya Peddada. These semantic signatures are used to search and retrieve documents with …

Computational Thinking Across The Curriculum: A Conceptual Framework, Amber Settle, Ljubomir Perkovic
Computational Thinking Across The Curriculum: A Conceptual Framework, Amber Settle, Ljubomir Perkovic
Technical Reports
We describe a framework for implementing computational thinking in a broad variety of general education courses. The framework is designed to be used by faculty without formal training in information technology in order to understand and integrate computational thinking into their own general education courses. The framework includes examples of computational thinking in a variety of general education courses, as well as sample in-class activities, assignments, and other assessments for the courses. The examples in the different courses are related and differentiated using categories taken from Peter Denning’s Great Principles of Computing, so that similar types of computational thinking appearing …

Essays On Housing Markets And Economic *Growth, Arzu Sen
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
This dissertation is composed of three essays examining housing markets and economic growth, while carefully considering the role of space. The first chapter serves as an introduction and briefly discusses how each essay contributes to the literature. The second chapter estimates the relationship between residential property values and proximity to coal mines in Monongalia County, West Virginia. The study utilizes a spatial hedonic price model complemented with GIS techniques to estimate the marginal willingness to pay for properties surrounding coal mines. Study findings indicate that proximity to a coal mine translates negatively into property values. The third chapter is related …

On The Ethics Of Human Genetic Engineering, John Ryan Speights
On The Ethics Of Human Genetic Engineering, John Ryan Speights
Honors Theses
In this paper I propose a guideline that we may use to determine when it is ethical to take advantage of the technology that we call human genetic engineering. I first clarify the purpose of the paper by explaining the science behind the technology, defining much of the debate in the process. In short, manufactured DNA is introduced into the human genome for the purpose of modifying the expression of the genes and the person that they produce. I indicate that this is a value theory paper rather than a detailed policy paper. This is significant because it merely addresses …

Considering The Curricular Impact Of Lactation Consulting/Counseling On Breastfeeding Decisions Within Two West Virginia County Wic Programs., Joni M. Johnson Gray
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Due to a glaring absence of research into the breastfeeding decisions of Appalachian women, this study investigates the potential influences of the WIC program and its counseling on the infant feeding decisions of West Virginia women. Using the lens of critical theory, the study employs a mixed methods research approach, including the distribution of a breastfeeding perception survey, extended interviews with WIC lactation consultants and an analysis of WV WIC’s proposed and practiced breastfeeding education curriculum. Results suggest that WV mothers are informed about the benefits of breastfeeding, but not necessarily from interactions with the WIC program. Rather, a latent …
A Ministry For Deacons And Deaconesses Of The Mt. Calvary Seventh-Day Adventist Church That Reflects The Ministry Of The Deacons In The First Century Christian Church, Vincent E. White
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem. The work of the deacons and deaconesses of the Mt. Calvary Seventh-day Adventist Church is reflective of the tradition and culture of the Seventh-day Adventist church regarding the role of deacons and deaconesses since its early history. The church has provided very little training for these officers. Therefore, the deacons and deaconesses of the Mt. Calvary Seventh-day Adventist Church have not been adequately informed of their identity as spiritual leaders who are responsible for looking after the social needs of the widows, sick, and poor. They are to manage conflicts and solve relational problems that arise among the members, …
New Media Use Among High Achieving Adolescents, Kathleen Sara Alpizar
New Media Use Among High Achieving Adolescents, Kathleen Sara Alpizar
Master's Theses
To date, there has been relatively little research on adolescents and their new media use in school and at home. It is important to study this new media use because it can reveal much about how communication patterns are changing or evolving as adolescents incorporate new media seamlessly into their lives.
This study examined high achieving adolescents' use of new media at school and in their homes. Data were gathered at school through questionnaires and group discussion sessions. In addition, students kept diaries of all of their media use for one week.
This study revealed that high-achieving adolescents use new …

A Seminar To Improve Interpersonal Relations Among Members Of The Waipahu Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Eliezer A. Graterol
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem. The members of the Waipahu Seventh-day Adventist Church had a limited understanding about the connection that exists between good relationships and evangelism, due to lack of education or training. The church members needed to strengthen their interpersonal relationships and grow in their understanding that Christianity is not just a series of doctrines and beliefs. The purpose of this project was to develop a seminar to educate members about the importance of having good relationships with one another.
Method. Three questionnaires were developed to help the participants to reflect on their current level of relationship with one another. These questionnaires …
Transforming The Devonshire Seventh-Day Adventist Church Into A Missional Community Through The Biblical Alignment Of The Church’S Spirituality, Passion And Ministries, Errol N. Mclean
Doctor of Ministry Projects
Problem. Churches experiencing plateau or even decline often arrive at that stage in their life cycle because they are no longer fulfilling the great commission. They have lost their spiritual vitality, vision, and a purpose for mission. The challenge is renewing in this context a vision for growth and a commitment to ministry to the lost. This project details how this challenge was responded to at the Devonshire Seventh-day Adventist Church.
Method. Identifying that the church was in the plateau stage of its life cycle was fundamental to approaching the problem. A theological foundation was established as a first step …
