Investigation Of The Design Of A Bistable Micro-Chemical-Mechanical Device Utilizing Lateral Buckling, Susan Lyn Barnes Jan 2010

Investigation Of The Design Of A Bistable Micro-Chemical-Mechanical Device Utilizing Lateral Buckling, Susan Lyn Barnes

Honors Theses

The Gracias Laboratory at Johns Hopkins University has developed microgrippers which utilize chemically-actuated joints to be used in micro-surgery. These grippers, however, take up to thirty minutes to close fully when activated biochemicals in the human body. This is very problematic and could limit the use of the devices in surgery. It is the goal of this research to develop a gripper that uses theGracias Laboratory's existing joints in conjunction with mechanical components to decrease the closing time. The purpose of including the mechanical components is to induce a state of instability at which time a small perturbation would cause …

A Dynamic Approach To Stakeholder Theory: A Case Study Of Labor - Management Relations At General Motors, Lee Elizabeth Markison Jan 2010

A Dynamic Approach To Stakeholder Theory: A Case Study Of Labor - Management Relations At General Motors, Lee Elizabeth Markison

Honors Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to identify areas for improvement in the current stakeholder management literature. The current stakeholder management theories were analyzed to determine their benefits and detriments. To determine how these theories work in a corporation, General Motors was selected as a single-case study to determine the patterns of stakeholder management over time. These patterns demonstrated the need for dynamic stakeholder management over time, with an emphasis on collaboration and the necessity of recognizing the greater stakeholder network surrounding the corporation. Proper stakeholder management in the early years of General Motors would have prevented its failure, while …

Surviving The Holocaust: A Life History Study, Greg Jones

Honors Theses

The aim of this thesis was to attempt to explain the inexplicable, thus coming to some concrete rationale as to why Murray was able to persevere unlike so many unfortunate victims who perished. The findings of this research attribute Murray's survival to three distinct categories; (1) Murray's geographical location and relationship to his hometown of Wierchomla, Poland (2) rare level of low anti-Semitic activity encountered and (3) a number of miscellaneous personal factors that included but are not limited to his diet, gender, age, psychological composition, family connections, agency, etc.

The Blue Of, Chrissy Reilly Jan 2010

The Blue Of, Chrissy Reilly

Honors Theses

When I first started my thesis, I intended for my finished project to be a compilation of poems that aims to reflect and reveal several repeating themes of our society's collective unconscious, such as the relationship between the physical and spiritual aspects of being and the representation of women's lives, organized religion, adolescence, and mental illness. I proposed writing a chapbook of poetry that reflects an exploration of, and sensitivity to, the human unconscious mind, fears, and desires. Consulting other works of surreal, lyric, and confessional poetry, I sought to personallydevelop as both a poet and a psychology student. I made …

Tarnishing The Golden Stool, Fenna Maximiliane Wächter Jan 2010

Tarnishing The Golden Stool, Fenna Maximiliane Wächter

Honors Theses

This thesis deals with the Asante federation (in modern-day Ghana ) in the nineteenth century, within the wider context of a general crisis of authority in African states in the later partof the century. African states were fighting against the external pressures of European imperial expansion while facing internal challenges to their structures of power. Asante was one of these states and this thesis examines why, because of a particular combination of internal and external challenges, Asante was unable to maintain its independence at the end of the nineteenth century.

Exploring The Life Of Edith Fetherston Through Her Clothing, Breanna Eckley Jan 2010

Exploring The Life Of Edith Fetherston Through Her Clothing, Breanna Eckley

Honors Theses

This research is an examination of the life of Edith Fetherston through studying her clothing and comparing her clothes to fashion history. The authors of Survey of Historic Costume, Tortora and Eubank, state that: 'Dress serves as a means of communication,' and that 'historic dress provides readers with some context for the period in which costumes were worn'. Most importantly, they state that clothing is 'a glimpse of attitudes and values as they were expressed by individuals of [a] period.' (4). Studying clothing history is a way to understand the attitudes of the times; it has a relationship with the …

Predictors Of Attitudes Toward Lesbians And Transgender Women In Relationships On A College Campus, Alishia Anne Wrubleski

Honors Theses

The purpose of this study was to gain a better understanding of the attitudes which perpetuate intolerance toward LGBT individuals, and to recognize, in particular, the unique attitudes transpeople face as a minority in the nation and even in the LGBT community. This research contributes to the bodies of research concerning the interrelatedness of intrinsic religiosity, political conservatism, sexism, the rape myth, lack of effective legal protection, and the intolerance of gender non-conformists. I have identified distinctions between attitudes on the part of both women and men, as well as toward different gender non-conformists. I have also taken research as …

The Effect Of Co-Colonization With Community-Acquired And Hospital-Acquired Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Strains On Competitive Exclusion, Joanna R. Wares, Erika M.C. D'Agata, Glenn F. Webb Jan 2010

The Effect Of Co-Colonization With Community-Acquired And Hospital-Acquired Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus Strains On Competitive Exclusion, Joanna R. Wares, Erika M.C. D'Agata, Glenn F. Webb

Department of Math & Statistics Faculty Publications

We investigate the in-hospital transmission dynamics of two methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus(MRSA) strains: hospital-acquired methicillin resistant S. aureus (HA-MRSA) and community-acquired methicillin-resistant S. aureus (CA-MRSA). Under the assumption that patients can only be colonized with one strain of MRSA at a time, global results show that competitive exclusion occurs between HA-MRSA and CA-MRSA strains; the strain with the larger basic reproduction ratio will become endemic while the other is extinguished due to competition. Because new studies suggest that patients can be concurrently colonized with multiple strains of MRSA, we extend the model to allow patients to be co-colonized with HA-MRSA …

Correcting Mismatched Authorities: Erecting A New "Water Federalism", Robert Abrams Jan 2010

Correcting Mismatched Authorities: Erecting A New "Water Federalism", Robert Abrams

Journal Publications

Conflicts over water allocation have, become a national topic, rather than a regional one confined to the West. Increased water use and projections for further increased demand are combining with the decline of stationarity to underscore the importance of having sound water management policies and a coherent plan for water allocation at the ready and capable of implementation. Historically, and in an earlier era of water federalism, the state police power was acknowledged as the proper locus for making water law and policy.

In the twentieth century, even while laws and rhetoric respected the division of authority favoring the states, …

Parents Super-Sizing Their Children: Criminalizing And Prosecuting The Rising Incidence Of Childhood Obesity As Child Abuse, Cheryl Page Jan 2010

Parents Super-Sizing Their Children: Criminalizing And Prosecuting The Rising Incidence Of Childhood Obesity As Child Abuse, Cheryl Page

Journal Publications

With all of the mudslinging that is taking place in the current healthcare debate, very few proponents and opponents seem to be addressing the elephant in the room-obesity. Childhood obesity, specifically, is rising at an alarming rate. "The prevalence of obesity (BMI 30) continues to be a health concern for adults, children and adolescents in the United States." Sadly, the rate of adult obesity is increasing almost as dramatically as that of childhood obesity. Based on the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES) study, in the combined years of 2003-2006, of children between the ages of two and nineteen, …

Stakeholder Theory: The State Of The Art, Bidhan L. Parmar, R. Edward Freeman, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Et Al. Jan 2010

Stakeholder Theory: The State Of The Art, Bidhan L. Parmar, R. Edward Freeman, Jeffrey S. Harrison, Et Al.

Management Faculty Publications

A variety of forces are changing the way managers and executives make sense of their responsibilities. Globalization has brought a larger variety of participants into contemporary businesses, technological innovation has increased the pace of change, and managers are discovering that their actions have the potential to affect a broader range of people all over the globe (Clement, 2005). Additionally, the pursuit of corporate objectives can be easily disrupted by the actions of unexpected groups. These challenges, driven by change and interconnectedness, reveal a need for managers and academics to re-think the traditional ways of conceptualizing the responsibilities of the firm. …

Periodicity Of Epidemics Of Invasive Disease Due To Infection With Streptococcus Pneumoniae In The United States, C A. Eckrode Jan 2010

Periodicity Of Epidemics Of Invasive Disease Due To Infection With Streptococcus Pneumoniae In The United States, C A. Eckrode

Harold L. Hodgkinson Award for Outstanding Dissertation

Despite the availability of vaccines, every year 40,000 individuals die due to the direct effect of Invasive Pneumococcal Disease (IPD) or its complications. IPD has been associated with 100,000-135,000 hospitalizations for pneumonia, 57,000 cases of bacteremia, and 300 cases of meningitis in the United States every year. Little is known about IPD epidemic patterns beyond annual seasonality, and this lack of understanding has limited the ability to detect early changes in IPD epidemiology that may lead to large outbreaks. To mitigate this gap in understanding, a retrospective cohort design study was conducted using a population-based cohort from the National Hospital …

Phytoremediation Of Total Petroleum Hydrocarbons (Tphs) Using Plant Species In Iran, Ali Daryabeigi Zand, Gholamreza Nabi Bidhendi, Nasser Mehrdadi

Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry

Plant-based remediation is a relatively new, efficient, and environmentally friendly technology, which can be promising for removing many contaminants like hydrocarbon pollutants. The main objectives of the current study were to investigate the effect of petroleum hydrocarbons with high initial concentration (about 3.5% by weight) on growth characteristics of maize (Zea mays L.), and tall fescue (Festuca arundinacea) as well as to evaluate the phytoremediation potential of the 2 mentioned plant species in highly contaminated, aged soil. In order to improve the condition of soil nutrients and also study the effect of soil amendment on plant growth, peat amendment was …
