Groove Shape-Dependent Absorption Enhancement Of 850 Nm Msm Photodetectors With Nano-Gratings, Narottam Das, Ayman Karar, Mikhail Vasiliev, Chee Leong Tan, Kamal Alameh, Yong Tak Lee
Research outputs pre 2011
Finite difference time-domain (FDTD) analysis is used to investigate the light absorption enhancement factor dependence on the groove shape of the nano-gratings etched into the surfaces of metal-semiconductor-metal photodetector (MSM-PD) structures. By patterning the MSM-PDs with optimized nano-gratings a significant improvement in light absorption near the design wavelength is achieved through plasmon-assisted electric field concentration effects. Simulation results show about 50 times light absorption enhancement for 850 nm light due to improved optical signal propagation through the nano-gratings.

Absorption Enhancement Of Msm Photodetector Structure With A Plasmonic Double Grating Structure, Chee Leong Tan, Volodymyr V. Lysak, Narottam Das, Ayman Karar, Kamal Alameh, Yong Lee
Research outputs pre 2011
We present finite difference time domain simulation to analyze the optical absorption enhancement of metal-semiconductor-metal photo detectors employing double plasmonic grating structures. Simulation results show that the combination of a subwavelength aperture and double nano-structured metal grating results in up to 25 times enhancement in optical absorption, in comparison to MSM photodetector structures employing only a subwavelength aperture. This improvement of the absorption enhancement is due to the coupling out function of the bottom grating structure which distributes the light to both side of the subwavelength aperture.

Behaviour Profiling On Mobile Devices, Fudong Li, Nathan Clarke, Maria Papadaki, Paul Dowland
Research outputs pre 2011
Over the last decade, the mobile device has become a ubiquitous tool within everyday life. Unfortunately, whilst the popularity of mobile devices has increased, a corresponding increase can also be identified in the threats being targeted towards these devices. Security countermeasures such as AV and firewalls are being deployed, however, the increasing sophistication of the attacks requires additional measures to be taken. This paper proposes a novel behaviour-based profiling technique that is able to build upon the weaknesses of current systems by developing a comprehensive multilevel approach to profiling. In support of this model, a series of experiments have been …

An Analysis Of Information Security Awareness Within Home And Work Environments, Shuhaili Talib, Nathan Clarke, Steven Furnell
Research outputs pre 2011
As technology such as the Internet, computers and mobile devices become ubiquitous throughout society, the need to ensure our information remains secure is imperative. Unfortunately, it has long been understood that good security cannot be achieved through technical means alone and a solid understanding of the issues and how to protect yourself is required from users. Whilst many initiatives, programs and strategies have been proposed to improve the level of information security awareness, most have been directed at organizations, with a few national programs focused upon home users. Given people's use of technology is primarily focused upon those two areas: …

A Novel Binarization Algorithm For Ballistics Imaging Systems, Zhihu Huang, Jinsong Leng
Research outputs pre 2011
The identification of ballistics specimens from imaging systems is of paramount importance in criminal investigation. Binarization plays a key role in preprocess of recognizing cartridges in the ballistic imaging systems. Unfortunately, it is very difficult to get the satisfactory binary image using existing binary algorithms. In this paper, we utilize the global and local thresholds to enhance the image binarization. Importantly, we present a novel criterion for effectively detecting edges in the images. Comprehensive experiments have been conducted over sample ballistic images. The empirical results demonstrate the proposed method can provide a better solution than existing binary algorithms.
Analysis Of Hu's Moment Invariants On Image Scaling And Rotation, Zhihu Huang, Jinsong Leng
Analysis Of Hu's Moment Invariants On Image Scaling And Rotation, Zhihu Huang, Jinsong Leng
Research outputs pre 2011
Moment invariants have been widely applied to image pattern recognition in a variety of applications due to its invariant features on image translation, scaling and rotation. The moments are strictly invariant for the continuous function. However, in practical applications images are discrete. Consequently, the moment invariants may change over image geometric transformation. To address this research problem, an analysis with respect to the variation of moment invariants on image geometric transformation is presented, so as to analyze the effect of image's scaling and rotation. Finally, the guidance is also provided for minimizing the fluctuation of moment invariants.

Research outputs pre 2011
Background Cyber-bullying (i.e., bullying via electronic means) has emerged as a new form of bullying that presents unique challenges to those victimised. Recent studies have demonstrated that there is a significant conceptual and practical overlap between both types of bullying such that most young people who are cyber-bullied also tend to be bullied by more traditional methods. Despite the overlap between traditional and cyber forms of bullying, it remains unclear if being a victim of cyber-bullying has the same negative consequences as being a victim of traditional bullying. Method The current study investigated associations between cyber versus traditional bullying and …

In this paper, we use the finite difference timedomain (FDTD) method to optimize the light absorption of an ultrafast plasmonic GaAs metal-semiconductor-metal photodetector (MSM-PD) employing metal nano-gratings. The MSM-PD is optimized geometrically, leading to improved light absorption near the designed wavelength of GaAs through plasmon-assisted electric and magnetic field concentration through a subwavelength aperture. Simulation results show up to 10-times light absorption enhancement at 867 nm due to surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagation through the metal nano-grating, in comparison to conventional MSM-PD.

Research outputs pre 2011
Small firms are critical to all economies but also have a significant negative impact on the environment. Their collective footprint equates to 60% of industrial pollution yet small firm owner-managers are not convinced of the necessity for behaviour change. This paper develops a proposed methodology to engage small firm owner-managers in 'green' production, in particular adoption of energy saving and waste recycling practices. This methodology includes a suggested approach to determining the 'tipping point' for the investment of time and resources by small firms. The paper argues that knowing the 'tipping point' and making a realistic business case should encourage …
Distributed Sensing, Communications, And Power In Optical Fibre Smart Sensor Networks For Structural Health Monitoring, Graham Wild, Gary Allwood, Steven Hinckley
Distributed Sensing, Communications, And Power In Optical Fibre Smart Sensor Networks For Structural Health Monitoring, Graham Wild, Gary Allwood, Steven Hinckley
Research outputs pre 2011
With distributed optical fibre sensors, a single source, a single detector, and a single fibre can be used for up to 1000 fibre Bragg grating sensors. However, this multiplexing architecture is not robust. Damage to any of these individual components can render the entire sensing system useless. To achieve a robust structural health monitoring system, this type of multiplexing cannot be utilised. To overcome the lack of robustness associated with multiplexing optical fibre sensors together, intelligence along with sensors needs to be distributed around a structure. Distributed Optical Fibre Smarts Sensing (DOFSS) represents a sensing architecture for the structural health …

Research outputs pre 2011
Introduction: The physiological signals that direct the division and differentiation of the zygote to form a blastocyst, and subsequent embryonic stem cell division and differentiation during early embryogenesis, are unknown. Although a number of growth factors, including the pregnancy-associated hormone human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) are secreted by trophoblasts that lie adjacent to the embryoblast in the blastocyst, it is not known whether these growth factors directly signal human embryonic stem cells (hESCs). Methods: Here we used hESCs as a model of inner cell mass differentiation to examine the hormonal requirements for the formation of embryoid bodies (EB’s; akin to blastulation) …

Background The low-density lipoprotein receptor related protein 1 (LRP1) has been implicated in Alzheimer's disease (AD) but its signalling has not been fully evaluated. There is good evidence that the cytoplasmic domain of LRP1 is involved in protein-protein interactions, important in the cell biology of LRP1. Results We carried out three yeast two-hybrid screens to identify proteins that interact with the cytoplasmic domain of LRP1. The screens included both conventional screens as well as a novel, split-ubiquitin-based screen in which an LRP1 construct was expressed and screened as a transmembrane protein. The split-ubiquitin screen was validated in a screen using …
Financial Market Integration In The Greater China Region: A Multivariate Asymmetric Approach, K.Y. Ho, Zhaoyong Zhang
Financial Market Integration In The Greater China Region: A Multivariate Asymmetric Approach, K.Y. Ho, Zhaoyong Zhang
Research outputs pre 2011
This paper examines the volatility dynamics of the greater China stock markets (Shanghai A- and B-shares, Shenzhen A- and B-shares, Taiwan, and Hong Kong) by employing a multivariate (tetravariate) framework that incorporates the features of asymmetries, persistence, and time-varying correlations, which are typically observed in stock markets of developed economies. Our results indicate that, unlike the Shenzhen and Shanghai Ashares, Hong Kong and Taiwan markets, the B-share markets do not exhibit significant asymmetric volatility (“leverage effect”), and return volatility in the A-share market is substantially higher than the B-share market before April 1997, but this result is reversed after that. …

Call Admission Control Scheme For Improved Quality Of Service In Wimax Communication At Vehicular Speeds, Iftekhar Ahmad, Daryoush Habibi
Research outputs pre 2011
The IEEE 802.16e standard, also known as mobile WiMAX, has emerged as an exciting mobile wireless communication technology that promises to offer both high throughput and guaranteed quality of service (QoS). Call admission control (CAC) scheme serves as a useful tool for WiMAX, which ensures that resources are not overcommitted and thereby, all existing connections enjoy guaranteed QoS. Existing CAC schemes largely depend on readily available information like currently available resources and bandwidth demand of the new call while making an acceptance or rejection decision once a new request arrives. Since wireless channels are not as reliable as wired communication, …
