Proteomic Analysis Of Plasma Exosomes Reveals That Kappa:Lambda Ratio Predicts Severe Acute Graft-Versus-Host Disease, Joseph Alge

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

Background: Acute Graft-Versus-Host disease (acute GVH D) is an often fatal, inflammatory multi-organ disease driven by T cell alloreactivity directed toward host tissues. One of the chief obstacles to improving outcomes of acute GVHD patients is timely diagnosis. Currently, acute GVHD is diagnosed clinically, once the symptoms are fully manifested. However, it is clear that important immunologic events occur prior to the occurrence of symptoms. A biomarker that could predict disease during the asymptomatic period could improve patient outcomes by allowing for earlier intensification of immunosuppressant therapy. Exosomes are an attractive target for acute GVHD biomarker discovery. They contain a …

Previous studies have reported associations of polymorphisms in the IGF1 gene with phenotypes of body composition (BC). The purpose of this study was to identify phenotypes of BC and physical function that were associated with the IGF1 promoter polymorphism (rs35767, −C1245T). Subjects from the Health, Aging, and Body Composition Study, white males and females (n = 925/836) and black males and females (533/705) aged 70–79 years were genotyped for the polymorphism. Phenotypes of muscle size and function, bone mineral density, and BC were analyzed for associations with this polymorphism. To validate and compare these findings, a cohort of young …

Riparian Conundra, David Weaver Jan 2010

Riparian Conundra, David Weaver

Conference papers and presentations

Riparian vegetation is established or restored on the basis that it physically filters and traps hillslope derived particulate nutrients in surface runoff. Whilst many studies support this conventional model of riparian function, few test this models embedded assumptions. The assumptions are that catchments are surface runoff dominated, that most surface derived nutrients are transported in particulate form, and that riparian management targets locations that will result in the greatest change in water quality. This paper reviews studies in south west Western Australia that challenge these assumptions. Plots measuring leaching and runoff of nutrients showed that 20 times more water and …

Enforcing Idealism: The Implementation Of Complementary International Protection In Canadian Refugee Law, Zofia Przybytkowski Jan 2010

Enforcing Idealism: The Implementation Of Complementary International Protection In Canadian Refugee Law, Zofia Przybytkowski

LLM Theses

This thesis evaluates Canadas compliance with human rights-based complementary international protection. Through an analysis of the roots of international refugee protection, it first links the evolution of the latter with the development of human rights law instruments. It then defines complementary protection as the corpus of legal bases for asylum claims outside of the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees. It uses various human rights instruments to outline international protection obligations, which take three different forms of complementary protection. The first one consists in independent protection mechanisms outside of the Refugee Convention, the most important being the formulation of …

Exploring The Value Of Group And Traditional Obstetrical Appointments To Reduce Health Disparity, Helene M. Holbrook Jan 2010

Exploring The Value Of Group And Traditional Obstetrical Appointments To Reduce Health Disparity, Helene M. Holbrook

Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects

Disparity in health outcomes is influenced by socioeconomic factors that may include access to important healthcare information in a culturally sensitive way. Can a group appointment model like the CenteringPregnancy model provide a more effective means for engaging Spanish-speaking pregnant women? Research studies using the group prenatal appointment model show increased pregnancy knowledge, readiness for labor and higher satisfaction compared with individual prenatal appointments. This paper discusses the importance of reducing disparities in birth outcomes using a group appointment model conducted in partial fulfillment for the Doctor of Nursing Practice degree.

Understanding Issues Related To Today’S College Students: Dealing With Burnout [Brochure And Video], Kendrick William Bryan, Huishan Li

Counseling Concepts and Applications for Student Affairs Professionals (CNS 577)

Academic burnout reaches thousands of students each year. Nick Repak of Grad Resources writes, “Excessive workload, lack of balance, and little opportunity to influence the environment make up only part of the fatigue syndrome.” Student affairs professionals and others commonly list assignment overload, outside influences, lack of personal motivation, mental and physical health, and instructor attitude and behavior as precursors to student burnout. Weidong Wu writes burnout can be attributed to the influence of bad social style and culture, unprecedented employment pressure, and deficiencies in college education. Attending college is stressful for many, but gaining an awareness about burnout can …

Planning And Implementing An Essential Package Of Sexual And Reproductive Health Services: Guidance For Integrating Family Planning And Sti/Rti With Other Reproductive Health And Primary Health Services, Katherine Williams, Charlotte E. Warren, Ian Askew

Reproductive Health

The second goal of the United Nations Population Fund’s (UNFPA’s) 2008–11 Strategic Plan is “Universal access to reproductive health by 2015 and universal access to comprehensive HIV prevention by 2010 for improved quality of life.” UNFPA identified a number of outcomes that will contribute to achieving this goal. Through an extensive search of the published literature and collation of unpublished literature on programmatic experiences with developing and implementing integrated packages of SRH services, the Population Council gathered a body of evidence from which this guidance for UNFPA staff and national counterparts has been developed. UNFPA identified two priority areas: integrating …

This document contains an executive summary of “A step-by-step guide to strengthening sexual violence services in public health facilities: Lessons and tools from sexual violence services in Africa.” Sexual violence (SV) is a serious health and human rights problem across Africa that disproportionately affects women and girls. Survivors require comprehensive and sensitive care to mitigate the negative health consequences of SV, minimize psychological trauma, and promote long-term reintegration and recovery. Despite high levels of sexual violence and a growing recognition of the need to improve the management of rape and sexual assault, many public health facilities in Africa do not …

Future Of Family Planning Program In Bangladesh: Issues And Challenges, Ubaidur Rob, Md. Noorunnabi Talukder, A.K.M. Zafar Ullah Khan

Reproductive Health

Bangladesh experienced large population growth in the past, but due to a successful family planning program, the total fertility rate (TFR) declined rapidly until the mid-nineties. Over the last decade, the country experienced a slow pace in fertility decline with a small increase in the contraceptive prevalence rate (CPR). This slow pace in fertility decline is causing serious concern for reaching replacement level fertility by 2015. CPR increased seven-fold from 1975 to 2000, but there was no significant increase from 2000-09, demonstrating the weakness of present program efforts. This raises concern among researchers, policymakers, and program managers about the prospect …

Urban Family Planning Program Of Bangladesh: Issues And Challenges, Ubaidur Rob, Md. Noorunnabi Talukder, A.K.M. Zafar Ullah Khan

Reproductive Health

Extremely inadequate government primary health care (PHC) structure exists in cities in Bangladesh. Nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) play an important role in providing basic health and family planning services to a limited proportion of the urban population. However, NGO programs are time-bound and subject to the availability of development assistance. Bangladesh has one of the highest rates of growth of urban populations among developing countries. For this teeming urban population, there is no structured family planning service. To ensure continuous family planning services in urban areas it is critical to develop a sustainable primary health care structure with the thrust on …

Reproductive Health

In Bangladesh, improving skilled birth attendance at delivery and access to facility-based obstetric and newborn care are vital to improving maternal and neonatal health. The health system in Bangladesh faces a critical challenge on the supply side: unavailability of quality services at public health facilities, due to inadequately motivated providers, vacant positions, and provider absenteeism. As well, salaries of public-sector providers do not depend on quality of work or quantity of services provided. Paying an incentive to facilities based on a performance benchmark has the potential of increasing the quantity and quality of maternal, neonatal, and child health (MNCH) care. …

Radical Hysterectomy With Pelvic Lymphadenectomy: Indications, Technique, And Complications, Rachel A. Ware, John R. Van Nagell Jr.

Obstetrics and Gynecology Faculty Publications

Radical hysterectomy with pelvic lymphadenectomy remains the treatment of choice for women with Stages IA2 and IB1carcinoma of the cervix, and selected patients with Stage II endometrial cancer. Improvement in surgical techniqe, administration of prophylactic antibiotics, thromboemolic prophylaxis, and advances in critical care medicine have resulted in lower operative morbidity associated with this procedure. Major urinary tract complications such as ureteral injury or vesico-vaginal fistula are now extremely rare (< 1%). Five-year survival rates following this procedure vary according to a number of clinical and histologic variables, and may be as high as 90% in women without lymph node metastases.
