Small Intestine Submucosa For Repair Of Injured Rabbit Cornea: A Pilot Study, Mark Nicholas Perenich Jan 2010

Small Intestine Submucosa For Repair Of Injured Rabbit Cornea: A Pilot Study, Mark Nicholas Perenich

PCOM Biomedical Studies Student Scholarship

Corneal injuries blind approximately 15 million people worldwide annually. Current methods of treatment have several disadvantages with respect to cost and availability. This study evaluated a small intestine submucosa (SIS) xenograft treatment for a severe corneal injury. SIS could be a favorable alternative to the current treatment methods, because it is inexpensive to produce and abundant where pigs are consumed. A severe ocular injury was created in the right eye of 5 rabbits by n-heptanol and mechanical debridement of the cornea and limbus. The cornea was then evaluated with fluorescence stain and a SIS xenograft was used for treatment. Clinical …

Equal Standing With States: Tribal Sovereignty And Standing After Massachusetts V. Epa, Joseph Mead, Nicholas Fromherz

All Maxine Goodman Levin School of Urban Affairs Publications

In Massachusetts v. EPA, 549 U.S. 497 (2007), the Supreme Court held that Massachusetts was entitled to "special solicitude" in the standing analysis because it was sovereign. As a result, Massachusetts passed the standing threshold in a global warming case where an ordinary litigant may have been stymied. The Supreme Court’s analysis raises an interesting question: Are Indian tribes—which have been considered sovereign entities since before the founding, and which hold lands facing heavy environmental pressure—entitled to "special solicitude" as well? We think they should be.

To make this argument, we begin by discussing standing basics; dissecting Massachusetts v. …

Mitigating The Distributional Impacts Of Climate Change Policy, Tracey M. Roberts Jan 2010

Mitigating The Distributional Impacts Of Climate Change Policy, Tracey M. Roberts

Washington and Lee Law Review

Under both a cap-and-trade system and a greenhouse gas tax, the government will regulate energy suppliers and distributors, utility companies, and large manufacturers. These parties will bear the statutory incidence of the regulation. However, the financial impacts of regulating greenhouse gas emissions will be borne primarily by consumers. Consumers will bear the economic incidence of the regulation in the form of increased costs ofgasoline, electricity, and home heating fuels and in increased consumer prices for all goods manufactured or distributed using fossil fuels. Greenhouse gas regulation will also generate significant revenue. This Article addresses the question of what should be …

Hiv Prevention Through Sport: The Case Of The Mathare Youth Sport Association In Kenya., Wim Delva, Kristien Michielsen, Bert Meulders, Sandy Groeninck, Edwin Wasonga, Pauline Ajwang, Marleen Temmerman, Bart Vanreusel Jan 2010

Hiv Prevention Through Sport: The Case Of The Mathare Youth Sport Association In Kenya., Wim Delva, Kristien Michielsen, Bert Meulders, Sandy Groeninck, Edwin Wasonga, Pauline Ajwang, Marleen Temmerman, Bart Vanreusel

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Sport has become a popular tool for HIV prevention, based on claims that it can foster life skills that are necessary to translate knowledge, attitudes and behavioural intentions into actual behaviour. Empirical evidence of the effectiveness of sport-based HIV prevention programmes is, however, sorely lacking. We therefore conducted a cross-sectional survey assessing sexual behaviour and the determinants thereof among 454 youth of the Mathare Youth Sport Association (MYSA) in Kenya and a control group of 318 non-MYSA members. Multiple (ordinal) logistic regression models were applied to measure the association between MYSA membership and attitudes, subjective norms and self-efficacy related to …

‘Maternal Intensive Care’: A Systematic Literature Review, An-Sofie Van Parys, Hans Verstraelen, Kristien Roelens, Marleen Temmerman

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Objective: The objective of this systematic literature review is to review current scientific knowledge on the definition of and the indications for maternal/obstetric intensive care (MIC).

Methods: We conducted a extensive search in OVID MEDLINE, EMBASE, COCHRANE, CINHAL and CEBAM using the keywords: maternal/obstetric intensive care, subacute care, intermediate care, postacute care, critical care, sub intensive care, progressive patient care, postnatal care, perinatal care, obstetrical nursing, neonatology, pregnancy, maternal mortality/morbidity and pregnancy complication. A total of 180 articles and one guideline were identified and supplemented by a hand search. After title, abstract and full text evaluation, the articles and guideline …

Chersich, Annalene Nel, Wim Delva, Kishor Mandaliya, Christophe E. Depuydt, Patricia Claeys, John-Paul Bogers, Marleen Temmerman

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Background: Human papillomavirus (HPV) and HIV are each responsible for a considerable burden of disease. Interactions between these infections pose substantial public health challenges, especially where HIV prevalence is high and HPV vaccine coverage low.

Methods: Between July 2005 and January 2006, a cross-sectional community-based survey in Mombasa, Kenya, enrolled female sex workers using snowball sampling. After interview and a gynaecological examination, blood and cervical cytology samples were taken. Quantitative real-time PCR detected HPV types and viral load measures. Prevalence of high-risk HPV was compared between HIV-infected and -uninfected women, and in women with abnormal cervical cytology, measured using conventional …

Perspectives On The Practice Of Vaginal Birth After Caesarean Section In East Africa, Sikolia Wanyonyi, Abraham Mukaindo, William Stones Jan 2010

Perspectives On The Practice Of Vaginal Birth After Caesarean Section In East Africa, Sikolia Wanyonyi, Abraham Mukaindo, William Stones

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Background: The increasing Caesarean section rates being observed in most facilities will ultimately result in a larger proportion of women with previous scar. Choices need to be made by both the patient and the health worker between attempted vaginal birth after Caesarean section (VBAC) and Elective Repeat Caesarean section (ERCS). Both practices are associated with perinatal risks and benefits that call for certain objectivity and prudence in decision making especially where resources are scarce.

Objective: To determine perceptions on the practice of vaginal birth after Caesarean section among maternity service providers in East Africa.

Design: A semi-qualitative cross sectional survey …

The Utility Of Clinical Care Pathways In Determining Perinatal Outcomes For Women With One Previous Caesarean Section; A Retrospective Service Evaluation, Sikolia Wanyonyi, Robinson N. Karuga Jan 2010

The Utility Of Clinical Care Pathways In Determining Perinatal Outcomes For Women With One Previous Caesarean Section; A Retrospective Service Evaluation, Sikolia Wanyonyi, Robinson N. Karuga

Obstetrics and Gynaecology, East Africa

Background: The rising rates of primary caesarean section have resulted in a larger obstetric population with scarred uteri. Subsequent pregnancies in these women are risk-prone and may complicate. Besides ensuring standardised management, care pathways could be used to evaluate for perinatal outcomes in these high risk pregnancies. We aim to demonstrate the use of a care pathway for vaginal birth after caesarean section as a service evaluation tool to determine perinatal outcomes.

Methods: A retrospective service evaluation by review of delivery case notes and records was undertaken at the Aga Khan University Hospital, Nairobi, Kenya between January 2008 and December …

A Process Model For Church Change As Reflected In St. Thomas’ Anglican Church, Sheffield, England, Bob Whitesel

Great Commission Research Journal

This article is an abbreviation of research originally presented to Dr. Eddie Gibbs, Donald McGavran Professor of Church Growth at Fuller Theological Seminary. Gibbs has been involved with the church under study for over two decades and lauded the author’s research. The research indicates a five-stage/four-trigger process model of change that may serve as an ecclesial prototype for effective change. The article is presented here in honor of Dr. Eddie Gibbs on his retirement.

Changing Paradigms Of Evangelism: Three Generational Views, Elmer Towns Jan 2010

Changing Paradigms Of Evangelism: Three Generational Views, Elmer Towns

Great Commission Research Journal

This paper attempts to summarize the overarching movements of evangelism in the past 70 years in the United States, most of which this author has personally observed and influenced. While there has always been evangelism in various expressions and to some degree, certain expressions of evangelism have been more effective than others. The primary emphasis of evangelism has gone from soul-winning evangelism (pre-1950), to Church Growth evangelism (1960–1990), to missional evangelism (2000-to the present). Each of these categories will be explored with concluding observations made as to the continued import of evangelism as a priority.
