A Fitness Model For Pastors, Kevin Lynn Elders Jan 2010

A Fitness Model For Pastors, Kevin Lynn Elders

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Pastors struggle with weight and fitness to a greater extent than the average person. The results are a lack of credibility, a decrease in ability, and a shorter life span, all of which reduce service to God. This project will serve as a fitness model for pastors to improve health, fitness, and effectiveness in the ministry of the Gospel of Jesus Christ by giving simple diet, lifestyle, and exercise instructions and changes.

The Effect Of Athletic Participation On Academic Achievement For High School Seniors In Eastern Tennessee, David Andrew Gorman Jan 2010

The Effect Of Athletic Participation On Academic Achievement For High School Seniors In Eastern Tennessee, David Andrew Gorman

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

This causal-comparative study with a narrative component investigated the effect athletic participation on the academic achievement of senior student-athletes and non-athletes who attended three public high schools in Eastern Tennessee. The impetus for the study was the conflicting research as it relates to the impact athletics participation had on academic success at the college and high school levels. Through student athlete and non-athlete comparisons of ACT scores and GPAs, the researcher found athletic participation did not affect academic achievement for high school seniors who graduated in 2009 from the three target high schools when compared to non-athletes. However, statistically significant …

Embedding Semantic Markup In Web Pages, Virginia Shilling Jan 2010

Embedding Semantic Markup In Web Pages, Virginia Shilling

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

The World Wide Web first revolutionized the presentation of text and data for people. The next wave of technology, the semantic web, will make data accessible to computers as well as people. Underpinning the semantic web is the Resource Description Framework (RDF). One way to make RDF-compatible data available on the web is to embed it in the X/HTML document. A small project investigates the available syntax for encoding RDF in web pages, the available descriptive vocabularies, and discusses the results of manually encoding web pages using RDFa and Dublin Core

Nitric Oxide And Trace Metals In Relation To Haemoglobin F Concentration In Nigerian Sickle Cell Disease Patients, John Ayodele Olaniyi, Olatubosun Ganiyu Arinola

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is an inherited haemoglobin (Hb) disorder associated with vaso-occlusive events, oxidative stress, high energy demand, and endothelial dysfunction. The endothelium plays a central role in the regulation of vascular homeostasis by releasing nitric oxide (NO) among other factors. Therefore, the objective of this study was to measure plasma levels of NO, trace metals, and HbF in SCD patients. Materials and methods: Plasma levels of NO, Zn, Mg, Mn, Se, Cu, Fe, Haemoglobin F (HbF) were measured in 59 steady state SCD patients referred to the Department of Haematology, University College Hospital, Ibadan, Nigeria and 35 age/sex …

Turkish Journal of Medical Sciences

It is demonstrated that in end-stage renal failure without an infectious pathology conventional laboratory parameters such as erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) and C-reactive protein (CRP) or other acute-phase proteins increase non-specifically. We aimed to evaluate procalcitonin (PCT) and other inflammatory markers such as C-reactive protein (CRP) and erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) in patients with continuous ambulatory peritoneal dialysis (CAPD)-related peritonitis. Materials and methods: A case-control study was conducted in a 600-bed tertiary hospital. Fifty patients with CAPD-related peritonitis constituting the study group and 50 CAPD patients without infection as the control group were included in the study between February 2006 …

Gough, James Turkson, David E. Levy, Christine J. Watson, Mariusz R. Wieckowski, Paolo Provero, Paolo Pinton, Valeria Poli

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

The pro-oncogenic transcription factor STAT3 is constitutively activated in a wide variety of tumours that often become addicted to its activity, but no unifying view of a core function determining this widespread STAT3-dependence has yet emerged. We show here that constitutively active STAT3 acts as a master regulator of cell metabolism, inducing aerobic glycolysis and down-regulating mitochondrial activity both in primary fibroblasts and in STAT3-dependent tumour cell lines. As a result, cells are protected from apoptosis and senescence while becoming highly sensitive to glucose deprivation. We show that enhanced glycolysis is dependent on HIF-1a up-regulation, while reduced mitochondrial activity is …

Attractor Divergence As A Metric For Assessing Walking Balance, Max J. Kurz, Katerina Markopoulou, Nikolaos Stergiou Jan 2010

Attractor Divergence As A Metric For Assessing Walking Balance, Max J. Kurz, Katerina Markopoulou, Nikolaos Stergiou

Journal Articles

: Individuals with Parkinson's disease and the aged have a high prevalence of falls. Since an increase in the number of falls is associated with physical and psychological harm, it is prudent that biomechanical metrics be established that will accurately assess an individual's walking balance. In this investigation, we initially used a simple bipedal walking computer model to theoretically establish the relationship between attractor divergence and walking balance. The Lyapunov exponent was used to quantify the amount of divergence present in the walking attractor. Simulations from our model indicated that attractors that have a greater amount of divergence are more …

Background: Deficiency of 4-aminobutyrate aminotransferase (GABA-T) is a rare disorder of GABA catabolism, with only a single sibship reported. We report on a third case, a Japanese female infant with severe psychomotor retardation and recurrent episodic lethargy with intractable seizures, with the diagnosis facilitated by proton magnetic resonance (MR) spectroscopy (1H-MRS). Methods: Neuroimaging was performed at the first episode of lethargy. For 1H-MRS, locations were placed in the semioval center and the basal ganglia. Quantification of metabolite concentrations were derived using the LCModel. We confirmed the diagnosis subsequently by enzyme and molecular studies, which involved direct DNA sequence analysis and …

Law And The Social Control Of American Capitalism, William J. Novak Jan 2010

Law And The Social Control Of American Capitalism, William J. Novak

Articles

This Essay is part of a larger, ongoing investigation of the role of law in the creation of a modern American state from 1877 to 1932. That project charts the decline of an early nineteenth-century world of local, common law self government (what I called in a previous work a “well-regulated society”) and the rise of a distinctly modern administrative regulatory state in the United States. This new legal-political regime was rooted in three interlinked developments: the centralization of public power; the individualization of private right; and the constitutionalization of the rule of law. Beginning soon after the Civil War, …

Mulieris Dignitatem And The Exclusivity Of Marriage Under Law, Howard Bromberg Jan 2010

Mulieris Dignitatem And The Exclusivity Of Marriage Under Law, Howard Bromberg

Articles

Jesus Christ established monogamy, the marriage of one man to one woman, as the canonical norm of his church and the juridical norm for all nations. This was a unique event in the history of the cultures and religions of the world. The Catholic Church has always defended its canonical norm of monogamy, often with great opposition. Through its influence, monogamy has been established as law in the Western world and in almost all cultures influenced by Western law and norms. The emerging jurisprudence of the United States, however, rejects any religious derivation as the basis of our laws. With …

Mast Cells And Hypoxia Drive Tissue Metaplasia And Heterotopic Ossification In Idiopathic Arthrofibrosis After Total Knee Arthroplasty., Theresa A Freeman, Javad Parvizi, Craig J Dela Valle, Marla J Steinbeck Jan 2010

Mast Cells And Hypoxia Drive Tissue Metaplasia And Heterotopic Ossification In Idiopathic Arthrofibrosis After Total Knee Arthroplasty., Theresa A Freeman, Javad Parvizi, Craig J Dela Valle, Marla J Steinbeck

Department of Orthopaedic Surgery Faculty Papers

ABSTRACT: BACKGROUND: Idiopathic arthrofibrosis occurs in 3-4% of patients who undergo total knee arthroplasty (TKA). However, little is known about the cellular or molecular changes involved in the onset or progression of this condition. To classify the histomorphologic changes and evaluate potential contributing factors, periarticular tissues from the knees of patients with arthrofibrosis were analyzed for fibroblast and mast cell proliferation, heterotopic ossification, cellular apoptosis, hypoxia and oxidative stress. RESULTS: The arthrofibrotic tissue was composed of dense fibroblastic regions, with limited vascularity along the outer edges. Within the fibrotic regions, elevated numbers of chymase/fibroblast growth factor (FGF)-expressing mast cells were …

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Wound healing is a complex process involving intrinsic dermal and epidermal cells, and infiltrating macrophages and leukocytes. Excessive oxidative stress and associated inflammatory processes can impair wound healing, and antioxidants have been reported to improve wound healing in animal models and human subjects. Uric acid (UA) is an efficient free radical scavenger, but has a very low solubility and poor tissue penetrability. We recently developed novel UA analogs with increased solubility and excellent free radical-scavenging properties and demonstrated their ability to protect neural cells against oxidative damage. Here we show that the uric acid analog (6, 8 dithio-UA, but not …

Multistate Modeling Of Habitat Dynamics: Factors Affecting Florida Scrub Transition Probabilities, David R. Breininger, James D. Nichols, Brean W. Duncan, Eric D. Stolen, Geoffrey M. Carter, Danny K. Hunt, John H. Drese

Faculty Bibliography 2010s

Many ecosystems are influenced by disturbances that create specific successional states and habitat structures that species need to persist. Estimating transition probabilities between habitat states and modeling the factors that influence such transitions have many applications for investigating and managing disturbance-prone ecosystems. We identify the correspondence between multistate capture-recapture models and Markov models of habitat dynamics. We exploit this correspondence by fitting and comparing competing models of different ecological covariates affecting habitat transition probabilities in Florida scrub and flatwoods, a habitat important to many unique plants and animals. We subdivided a large scrub and flatwoods ecosystem along central Florida's Atlantic …
