Pairing Educational Robotics With Geospatial Technologies In Informal Learning Environments, Bradley Barker, Neal Grandgenett, Gwen Nugent, Viacheslav Adamchuk
Journal of Youth Development
Educational robotics, when paired with geospatial technologies and taught in an informal educational environment, can be an innovative strategy to teach youth about science, technology, engineering, and mathematic (STEM) concepts. However, little is known about the true effects on conceptual knowledge and associated attitudes. Therefore, this study was conducted to examine the short- term effects of a series of five-day summer robotics/geospatial camps held in Nebraska. The study was conducted at six diverse locations and consisted of a five-day 4-H camp experience. The study examined the experiences of 147 youth between the ages of 10 and 15. A pretest- posttest …

Earthquake Risk Assessment Of Mississippi State University, Inoka Peiris
Earthquake Risk Assessment Of Mississippi State University, Inoka Peiris
Theses and Dissertations
Mississippi State University is one of the many public institutions in Mississippi located near a seismic hazard zone known as the New Madrid Seismic Zone (NMSZ). Previous studies reveal the possibility of damage to the campus during an earthquake is in the order of ten percent. Risk assessment for building structures on campus was carried out using HAZUS-MH MR3 software package, for several earthquake scenarios defined to replicate historic and hypothetical earthquake events. The study predicts peak ground accelerations of 0.09g to 0.2g relating to 0.67% to 4.28% building loss ratios respectively, which amounts to a loss of $8.2 million to …

Role Of Organic Matter In Formation Of Stromatolites And Micritic Ooids From Channing Lake Basin:Rita Blanca Formation; Panhandle, Texas, Brittany Leigh Weeks
Theses and Dissertations
Channing Lake Basin, located west and northwest of Channing, in the Texas Panhandle, is of substantial area and presumably includes lake beds of Pliocene and Pleistocene ages within the Rita Blanca Formation, a member of the Ogallala Group. The foci of this study were a micritic ooid layer and a directly overlying stromatolite layer, which crop out in a canyon approximately 10 kilometers west of Channing. Research was conducted primarily using petrographic and scanning electron microscopy. Significant conclusions include: organic matter was preserved in ooids as filaments and nanoscale spheroids, which served to capture ostracode carapaces within ~10% of micritic …
On The Design-Build Of Small Pavilions, Agrippa Spence Kellum
On The Design-Build Of Small Pavilions, Agrippa Spence Kellum
Theses and Dissertations
Design-build is the process whereby a project is constructed by the same entity that designed it. Detailed narratives are provided for the collaborative, integrated designbuild of two small, relatively contemporary pavilions. The first was constructed as part of a design-build workshop taught by Steve Badanes, director of the Neighborhood Design/Build Studio at the University of Washington Department of Architecture and founder of the international architecture firm The Jersey Devil. The second, a multi-use pavilion on the site of a former junkyard, was implemented as a local volunteer community service project using Badanes' method. A third proposal is also described; an …
Temporal And Spatial Patterns Of Fish Distribution And Diversity In The Noxubee River, Mississippi And Alabama, Michael Thomas Calloway
Temporal And Spatial Patterns Of Fish Distribution And Diversity In The Noxubee River, Mississippi And Alabama, Michael Thomas Calloway
Theses and Dissertations
The Mobile Basin is a prime example of a system that has undergone extensive channel modification with corresponding declines in the distribution and abundance of the native aquatic fauna. However, many of the declining aquatic species of the Mobile basin may persist within unmodified subbasins. The Noxubee River is a subbasin of the Mobile basin that has had very little alteration throughout its watershed. I investigated the species richness and assemblage structure to determine if the contemporary fish assemblage attributes resembled the conditions represented by historic collections. The findings of this study are important because the Noxubee River has not …

Alternative Literacies, Resistance, And Spatial Representations In The Do-It-Yourself (Diy) Culture Of Zine Publication In New Orleans, Nathan Jessee
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
Zines are small circulation media that amateurs make and distribute. Inspired by both the lack of ethnographic research on the do-it-yourself (DIY) culture of zine-making in urban studies and the growing interest in ethnographically oriented research in literacy studies, rhetoric, and linguistics this research explores the people, places, and practices behind zine publication in New Orleans, Louisiana through participant observation at two specialized loci—the Iron Rail and punk shows—as well as semi-structured interviews with people who make, distribute, and consume zines. This research argues that zine-makers use zines to reinterpret urban space in search of an authentic relationship with the …
Petrology And Geochemical Evolution Of The East Hill Suite Of The Mont Saint-Hilaire Alkaline Plutonic Complex, Peter Tice
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The Mont Saint-Hilaire alkaline complex, Québec, is a Cretaceous rift-related intrusion comprising two gabbroic suites and the East Hill suite, an assemblage of several distinct nepheline syenites and evolved syenitic rocks. Whole-rock analysis of the East Hill suite reveals two fractionation trends, one which is described by the syenitic lithologies and one by the evolved syenites and syenoids. A lamprophyric unit stands on its own, geochemically, consistent with typical lamprophyre petrogenesis. Whole-rock geochemistry of the East Hill suite shows moderate silica content but highly alkaline rocks, enriched in Mn, Zn, Zr, Y, and Ce. Chlorine and sulfur are important and …

Culture For Sale: An Ethnographic Study Of Commodification At The Westwego Shrimp Lot Of Louisiana, Rachael Wissing
Culture For Sale: An Ethnographic Study Of Commodification At The Westwego Shrimp Lot Of Louisiana, Rachael Wissing
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This study examines the marketing strategies employed by vendors at the Westwego shrimp lot in Westwego, Louisiana. Given the fluctuating market conditions and rising costs of seafood production, seafood vendors in the Gulf Coast region must look continuously for new ways to market their product as a cultural commodity. This thesis argues that shrimp becomes a cultural commodity at the Westwego shrimp lot, and that through marketing strategies, vendors at the Westwego shrimp lot both resist and accept certain aspects of globalization. The presence of imports, a presence that emerges in the context of globalization, poses a large threat to …
A Blue-Green Divide? Elite And Mass Partisan Dynamics In Taiwan, Hung Chung Wang
A Blue-Green Divide? Elite And Mass Partisan Dynamics In Taiwan, Hung Chung Wang
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This dissertation aims to investigate the bases of partisan differentiation and degree of polarization since Taiwan's 2000 presidential election. By employing American concepts and theories of partisan polarization, I analyze Taiwan's party politics at both the elite and mass levels. At the elite level, I examine whether inter‐party antagonism has become more intense in Taiwan's legislature and what types of issues contribute most to party conflict since 2000. At the mass level, I examine public perceptions of the parties, analyze whether any political issues divide the Taiwanese public along partisan lines, and explore the social and demographic bases of partisan …
Corner Culture: Corner Stores In The Black Pearl Neighborhood Of New Orleans, Andrea Mccarthy
Corner Culture: Corner Stores In The Black Pearl Neighborhood Of New Orleans, Andrea Mccarthy
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
The corner store represents a significant part of New Orleans' history and neighborhoods. From essential grocery providers to bars and restaurants full of local character, these buildings have held a number of roles in the community. These roles have changed in response to development patterns, market pressures, and land-use regulation. A number of these traditional businesses still exist today as neighborhood cultural institutions throughout the city. Many more, however, have faced conversions to residential buildings, abandonment, or demolition. This case study addresses the significance of the corner store, identifies a number of factors leading to its decline, and suggests that …
Geospatial Technology/Traditional Ecological Knowledge-Derived Information Tools For The Enhancement Of Coastal Restoration Decision Support Processes, Matthew Bethel
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This research investigated the feasibility and benefits of integrating geospatial technology with traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) of an indigenous Louisiana coastal population in order to assess the impacts of current and historical ecosystem change to community viability. The primary goal was to provide resource managers with a comprehensive method of assessing localized ecological change in the Gulf Coast region that can benefit community sustainability. Using Remote Sensing (RS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and other geospatial technologies integrated with a coastal community's TEK to achieve this goal, the objectives were (1) to determine a method for producing vulnerability/sustainability mapping products for …

A Profile Of Inner-City Public School Districts: A Comparative Analysis Of U.S. Metropolitan Area Demographics And The Abandonment Of Neighborhood Schools, Belinda Saunders
A Profile Of Inner-City Public School Districts: A Comparative Analysis Of U.S. Metropolitan Area Demographics And The Abandonment Of Neighborhood Schools, Belinda Saunders
Theses and Dissertations
Most departments of education and school boards do not identify nor compile data reasons for public school abandonments. Public schools are anchors, vital components, and “heartbeats” of communities that contribute to the growth or decline of neighborhoods. Despite the influences that public schools have on the development and sustainability of neighborhoods, public school abandonments are increasing. School systems use abandonments to address challenges of poor academic achievements, decreasing budgets, declining enrollments, and deteriorating and underutilized facilities. However, absent from literature are comprehensive data and analyses that identify the number of public school abandonments, their locations, or the contributing factors for …

A transect of sites has been established in North America and England as part of the Critical Zone Exploration Network (CZEN) to investigate the rates of soil formation across a climate gradient. Sites reported here are all underlain by an organic-poor, iron-rich Silurian-age shale, providing a constant parent material lithology from which soil is forming. This climosequence includes relatively cold and wet sites in Wales, New York and Pennsylvania, with temperature increasing to the south in Virginia, Tennessee and Alabama. Puerto Rico provides a warm/wet end member for the transect, although this site does not lie on the same shale …

Does Race Based Redistricting Matter For Policy?, Ebonya Washington
Does Race Based Redistricting Matter For Policy?, Ebonya Washington
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
During the 1990 congressional redistricting many states were mandated to create additional majority minority-resident districts in order to elect more minorities to Congress. Civil rights groups and Republicans cheered. The Party views Democratic districts stripped of Black voters as opportunities to repaint blue districts red. The academic literature agrees, attributing the Republican return to House control in 1994 to race based redistricting. However, this literature generally focuses on the district as the unit of analysis, a focus that is too narrow, as some districts gain Black residents while others lose them. I focus on states, the level at which redistricting …
Poverty, Inequality And Cost Of Living Differences, Enrico Moretti
Poverty, Inequality And Cost Of Living Differences, Enrico Moretti
University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series
Metropolitan areas in the US are characterized by enormous differences in average income, earnings, and factor productivity. The income of individuals located in metropolitan areas at the top of the income distribution is more than double the income of observationally similar individuals located in metropolitan areas at the bottom of the distribution. These differences reflect, at least in part, variation in local productivity.

Teachers' Perspectives About Implementing A Content-Specific Technology Innovation, Thomas Stovall Hibbs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This research was designed to examine the implementation of a technology innovation in a content area from teachers’ point of view. Three classroom teachers who were involved in organized implementations of a technology innovation at the school level were asked to describe their implementations. They then were asked to review those implementations through four specific lenses that research indicates are important: school change, factors affecting implementation of technology innovations, technology in their content area, and examining their use of developers’ innovative improvements. Finally the classroom teachers were asked, as a summary technique, to talk about factors important to include in …
