Gender Dimorphism In The United States Legal System: A "Post-Feminist" And Comparative Critique, James Wilets
Gender Dimorphism In The United States Legal System: A "Post-Feminist" And Comparative Critique, James Wilets
Faculty Scholarship
There has been extensive jurisprudential literature positing that the structure, values and processes of the American legal and educational system, focusing heavily on adversarial battle among parties in court, and competition in law school, are fundamentally "male-centered." This "male-female" construct suggests that there is an essential dichotomy between the two genders with respect to resolving disputes that is reflected in the legal system, and that this male-female dichotomy is harmful to all participants and perhaps to justice itself.
This article expands upon this literature by arguing that many of the dysfunctional characteristics of the American legal system labeled "male" in …

Insecta Mundi
Fifteen new species of faronine pselaphines in the genus Sonoma Casey are described: S. baylessae; S. brasstownensis; S. chouljenkoi; S. cygnus; S. gilae; S. gimmeli; S. holmesi; S. mayori; S. nicholsae; S. parkorum; S. nhunguyeni; S. sokolovi; S. streptophorophallus; S. tishechkini; S. tridens. Male specimens of Sonoma tolulae (LeConte) were collected from the type locality and this species is redescribed. These species bring the total diversity of the genus to 43 species. The genus is divided into four species groups based on characters of the male genitalia. Sonoma corticina Casey was not included in the genus when it was …

Jet Lag, Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University
2010-2011 PEAK Explores the Answer: Experiments in Arts & Technology
In 1998 Marianne Weems and The Builders Association, in collaboration with the architects/media artists Elizabeth Diller and Ricardo Scofidio, presented JET LAG, a cross-media project that was ahead of its time. JET LAG is based on two overlapping true stories about eccentric individuals who manipulated time and space, turning their travels into a new kind of escape. In 1969 an ambitious sailor set out on a round-the-world sailboat race only to discover that he could “win” by simply sending radio reports of his false travel times while sailing in circles off the coast of South America. Then, over the course …

Identifying Opportunities For Collaborations In International Engineering Education Research On Problem- And Project-Based Learning, Kacey D. Beddoes, Brent K. Jesiek, Maura Borrego
Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning
We report on the results of a study to examine the global state of engineering education research on problem- and project-based learning (PBL). This paper has two major aims. First, we analyze a large collection of conference papers and journal articles to report on research trends in PBL, including in specific, leading countries. Second, based upon our analysis as well as a literature review of meta-analyses/syntheses of PBL literature, we propose a theoretical model for conceptualizing international research collaborations. Based on this model, we make recommendations for future initiatives, including multinational collaborations for research on PBL in engineering education

The Effect Of Teacher Pedagogical Content Knowledge And The Instruction Of Middle School Geometry, Sara Talley Lenhart
The Effect Of Teacher Pedagogical Content Knowledge And The Instruction Of Middle School Geometry, Sara Talley Lenhart
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This study investigated the relationship between middle school math teacher pedagogical content knowledge as gathered from a teacher assessment and student Standards of Learning scores. Nine middle-school math teachers at two rural schools were assessed for their pedagogical content knowledge in geometry and measurement in the specific area of decomposing and recomposing one-dimensional and two-dimensional figures. A Pearson's Product Moment Coefficient statistical test was used to compare teacher assessment scores of each pedagogical content knowledge level with student Standard of Learning math scores. The results showed that there is a relationship between teacher pedagogical content knowledge and student Standards of …

Injury In Nevada, Michelle Chino, Jonathon Lavalley, Darlene R. Haff, Deborah A. Harris, Andrea R. Rivers
School of Public Health Faculty Research
Injury is a major threat to health and safety. In a typical day in the US, 400 people will die as the result of an injury, 7,500 will be hospitalized due to an injury, and more than 150,000 will suffer an injury severe enough to restrict activities and seek medical attention. Many of these deaths, hospitalizations, and disabling events will be the result of motor vehicle crashes. Others will result from violence, falls, drowning, and poisoning – all of which are considered injuries.
The costs of injury are high. In the United States, the cost of injuries is estimated to …

The Arizona Summit: Tough Times In A Tough Land, Linda A. Whitaker, Melanie I. Sturgeon
Journal of Western Archives
Western repositories have much to gain and little to lose from statewide initiatives that promote cooperative collection management policies. The region's topography, demographics, boom-bust cycles, and flood of new residents threaten their missions and their very existence. Add competition, backlogs, duplication, and fragmented collections to this volatile mix and it renders the collecting environment untenable.
