Marine Plankton Phenology And Life History In A Changing Climate: Current Research And Future Directions, R Ji, M Edwards, Dl Mackas, Ja Runge, Ac Thomas Oct 2010

Marine Plankton Phenology And Life History In A Changing Climate: Current Research And Future Directions, R Ji, M Edwards, Dl Mackas, Ja Runge, Ac Thomas

School of Biological and Marine Sciences

Increasing availability and extent of biological ocean time series (from both in situ and satellite data) have helped reveal significant phenological variability of marine plankton. The extent to which the range of this variability is modified as a result of climate change is of obvious importance. Here we summarize recent research results on phenology of both phytoplankton and zooplankton. We suggest directions to better quantify and monitor future plankton phenology shifts, including (i) examining the main mode of expected future changes (ecological shifts in timing and spatial distribution to accommodate fixed environmental niches vs. evolutionary adaptation of timing controls to …

Final Report: Anchorage Disproportionate Minority Contact Study, André B. Rosay, Ronald S. Everett, William Hurr Oct 2010

Final Report: Anchorage Disproportionate Minority Contact Study, André B. Rosay, Ronald S. Everett, William Hurr

Reports

This project examined disproportionate minority contact in Anchorage, Alaska. It was designed to provide a more nuanced understanding of disproportionate minority contact at the referral stage (when law enforcement officers refer youth to the Alaska Division of Juvenile Justice). To do so, we relied on community involvement and utilized different statistical techniques to examine the geography and development of disproportionate minority contact. Researchers partnered with practitioners from the Anchorage Disproportionate Minority Contact Initiative to structure the research process and to interpret and disseminate results. Geographic analyses were conducted to examine where the highest levels of disproportionate minority contact were occurring …

La ‘Paradoxe Marocaine’ Moroccan-Dutch Citizens In Transnational Social Space, Deva-Dee Siliee Oct 2010

La ‘Paradoxe Marocaine’ Moroccan-Dutch Citizens In Transnational Social Space, Deva-Dee Siliee

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Human mobility has existed in countless forms for many centuries. Yet in our modern world of sovereign territorially defined nation-states, both policy makers and national publics increasingly see human mobility across national boundaries as alarming. The rising movement of people, culture and capital across borders is suggested to pose a direct challenge to the nation-state as the organizing unit around which many areas of human activity revolve. In the age of globalization, academics and politicans are investigating how to understand the question of individuals and entire communities, intent on maintaining strong economic, cultural and social ties across state borders. This …

Dante, Existential Hero, Joseph L. Nagy Oct 2010

Dante, Existential Hero, Joseph L. Nagy

Presidential Seminar on the Catholic Intellectual Tradition

So much has been written about Dante's Comedy in the seven centuries since its creation that it is hard to imagine that there is something new to add. But like all great art, it harbors a mystery. By what magic did Dante create this wonder? Where in the labyrinth of the human soul did he find the inspiration to synthesize classical Greek and Roman philosophy and literature with scholastic theology to create a work that has often been described as the equivalent of a medieval cathedral?

The Migrant Homemaker: Historicizing Gender Between Nations In Yamina Benguigui’S Inch’Allah Dimanche, Olivia Donaldson Oct 2010

The Migrant Homemaker: Historicizing Gender Between Nations In Yamina Benguigui’S Inch’Allah Dimanche, Olivia Donaldson

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This article examines Yamina Benguigui’s film Inch’Allah dimanche (2001) to probe questions of gender and nation in the context of transnational migration. An analysis of the historical drama, which recounts an Algerian family’s reunion in France during the 1970s, reveals how the migrant homemaker must negotiate her symbolic role as “bearer of the nation” in relationship to not one but two nations: the homeland left behind and the new homeland. This filmic study of “gender between nations” proposes the benefits of transnational studies that literally “move beyond the borders of the nation” to consider the frontiers of the body. A …

Irresolute Intermediaries: Television, Memory, And Weird Frontiers, David Lewkowich Oct 2010

Irresolute Intermediaries: Television, Memory, And Weird Frontiers, David Lewkowich

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

The task of narrating our memories is a difficult and virtually impossible undertaking, especially since it is often those moments we cannot recall that, in the end, may prove be the most formative. In this paper, I look at what it means to narrativize reminiscences of the televisual viewing experience, as banal encounters that nevertheless shed light on the fragmented nature of our relations in the social world. Despite the ubiquitous presence of television in our everyday lives, its worth is rarely interrogated at the level of the writer/researcher’s subject and of memory. This piece looks not at the substance …

Valuing Environmental Quality: A Space-Based Strategy, John I. Carruthers, David E. Clark Oct 2010

Valuing Environmental Quality: A Space-Based Strategy, John I. Carruthers, David E. Clark

Economics Faculty Research and Publications

This paper develops and applies a space-based strategy for overcoming the general problem of deriving the implicit demand for nonmarket goods. It focuses specifically on evaluating one form of environmental quality, distance from Environmental Protection Agency designated environmental hazards, via the single-family housing market in the Puget Sound region of Washington State. A spatial two-stage hedonic price analysis is used to: (i) estimate the marginal implicit price of distance from air release sites, hazardous waste generators, hazardous waste handlers, superfund sites, and toxic release sites; and (ii) estimate a series of implicit demand functions describing the …

Brazil's Launch Of Lender Environmental Liability As A Tool To Manage Environmental Impacts, Bianca Zambão Oct 2010

Brazil's Launch Of Lender Environmental Liability As A Tool To Manage Environmental Impacts, Bianca Zambão

University of Miami International and Comparative Law Review

Due to an emerging Brazilian doctrine of environmental liability, lenders now face the prospect of lawsuits that seek remediation of, or compensation for, environmental damages resulting from their borrowers' activities. Unprecedented judicial decisions (based on a strict, joint and several environmental liability for lenders) broad standing, and ongoing initiatives of the government portray financial institutions as the best target to pursue environmental protection in the country. That scenario, however, may represent a detour from the imperative improving the functionality of the public administration. This article examines how legal actors are shaping Brazil's environmental law enforcement and the extent to which …

Post‐Glacial Expansion Into The Paleozoic Plateau: Evidence Of An Ozarkian Refugium For The Ozark Minnow Notropis Nubilus (Teleostei: Cypriniformes), Peter B. Berendzen, J.F. Dugan, Tony Gamble Oct 2010

Post‐Glacial Expansion Into The Paleozoic Plateau: Evidence Of An Ozarkian Refugium For The Ozark Minnow Notropis Nubilus (Teleostei: Cypriniformes), Peter B. Berendzen, J.F. Dugan, Tony Gamble

Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications

Genetic variation was examined within the Ozark minnow Notropis nubilus using complete mtDNA cytochrome b gene sequences from 160 individuals representing 30 localities to test hypotheses on the origin of the distribution. Phylogenetic analyses revealed three strongly supported clades of haplotypes consistent with geographic distributions: a clade from the Western Ozarks, a clade from the Southern Ozarks and a clade from the Northern Ozarks and upper Mississippi River basin. The estimated mean ages of these clades indicated that they diverged during pre-Illinoian glacial cycles extending from the late Pliocene into the early Pleistocene. Results of demographic analyses based on coalescent …

"Rectification Of Human Names": E.P. Thompson And Contemporary Debates On Historical And Epistemological Discourse, Manuel Yang Oct 2010

"Rectification Of Human Names": E.P. Thompson And Contemporary Debates On Historical And Epistemological Discourse, Manuel Yang

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

E. P. Thompson used the Confucian trope of “rectification of human names” to summarize the major themes of his work. Such rectification has both political and scholarly ramifications that extend to poststructuralist debates over historical discourse (Ranajit Guha’s meditation on the method of Subaltern Studies, Hayden White’s theory of rhetorical universalism); organic relationship between working-class gesture, linguistic philosophy, and political economy (as exemplified in Piero Sraffa's renowned contribution to the "epistemological break" between the early and late Ludwig Wittgenstein's philosophy); and the universality of class struggle in defining the crucial intellectual breakthroughs of the 1970s, from the works of Michel …

What Lies Beneath: Uncovering The Health Of Milwaukee's People, 1880-1929, Brigitte Marina Charaus Oct 2010

What Lies Beneath: Uncovering The Health Of Milwaukee's People, 1880-1929, Brigitte Marina Charaus

Dissertations (1934 -)

The true measure of a city's health is the health of its people. To truly understand how Milwaukee came to be known as the "healthiest city" in 1930, one must examine the health needs of common Milwaukeeans from 1880 to 1929. This study seeks to complement Judith Leavitt's pioneering work on public health in Milwaukee by presenting a picture, not of the politics of health reform, but of the personal side of health in the city.

Through an extensive examination of records including, but not limited to, coroner's reports, hospital records, personal correspondence, newspapers, cemetery data, and institutional records, a …

Visionary Ascents Of Moses In Pseudo-Philo's Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum: Apocalyptic Motifs And The Growth Of Visionary Moses Tradition, Kristine Johnson Ruffatto Oct 2010

Visionary Ascents Of Moses In Pseudo-Philo's Liber Antiquitatum Biblicarum: Apocalyptic Motifs And The Growth Of Visionary Moses Tradition, Kristine Johnson Ruffatto

Dissertations (1934 -)

This dissertation explores the development of visionary Moses tradition from its origins in the Hebrew Bible through pro-Mosaic Second Temple literature and rabbinic texts. It demonstrates that throughout this variegated literature, there is a developing tendency to portray Moses as an apocalyptic seer. In the non-biblical Mosaic texts that were analyzed, Moses' revelation on Sinai and Nebo is increasingly invested with esoteric content, and Moses' ascents are often depicted as heavenly journeys. These revelatory developments have conceptual roots in alternative visionary traditions, notably Enochic lore. The texts investigated contain a discernible thread of dialogue with Enochic revelatory claims; Moses' ascents …

Preventive Care Utilization Among Black Women : Perceived Beliefs, Benefits And Barriers To Mammography Screening, Rowandalla Y. Dunbar Oct 2010

Preventive Care Utilization Among Black Women : Perceived Beliefs, Benefits And Barriers To Mammography Screening, Rowandalla Y. Dunbar

Loma Linda University Electronic Theses, Dissertations & Projects

Blacks, in comparison to other racial or ethnic groups, suffer higher rates of illness and death from many preventable or treatable diseases. Despite the significantly higher rates of mortality and disease, Blacks are least likely to utilize clinical preventive care services. Black women, who are more likely to have advanced breast cancer at time of diagnosis (Chu, Lamar, & Freeman, 2003) are least likely to seek mammography screening (National Health Interview Study, 2000). Allen, Bastani, Bazargan and Leonard (2002) examined predictors of mammography screening among women 40 years old and older residing in the South Central area of Los Angeles, …

Many Urban And Rural Workers Lose Health Insurance During Job Transitions, Nathaniel J. Anderson Ms, Mph, Erika C. Ziller Phd, Melanie M. Race Ms, Andrew F. Coburn Phd Oct 2010

Many Urban And Rural Workers Lose Health Insurance During Job Transitions, Nathaniel J. Anderson Ms, Mph, Erika C. Ziller Phd, Melanie M. Race Ms, Andrew F. Coburn Phd

Population Health & Health Policy

Numerous studies have found that rural residents are more likely to be uninsured than urban residents, in part because rural workers are more likely to be employed by a small business or have low wages and thus have more limited access to employer coverage.1-5 Yet, our knowledge about how coverage changes with employment transitions is limited. Prior research indicates that loss of a job puts workers at greater risk of becoming uninsured,6 and there is some evidence that this risk is even greater for rural workers.7

In the past 20 years, much of the federal-level policy attention …

Hours Of Boredom, Moments Of Terror: Temporal Desynchrony In Military And Security Force Operations, Peter A. Hancock, Gerald P. Krueger Oct 2010

Hours Of Boredom, Moments Of Terror: Temporal Desynchrony In Military And Security Force Operations, Peter A. Hancock, Gerald P. Krueger

Defense and Technology Papers

The authors examine resultant psychological and behavioral implications for combatant and security personnel performance as viewed through application of a traditional human psychological stress model. Inadequate recognition of the implications resulting from long lull periods, combat pulses, and the need to recover from stress can lead to dysfunctional soldiering as well as poor individual and small unit performance.
