A Bi-Regional Cge Model Of The South West Housing Market, Sarah-Jane Keast Jan 2010

A Bi-Regional Cge Model Of The South West Housing Market, Sarah-Jane Keast

Plymouth Business School Theses

Volatility within the UK housing market is thought to be a significant factor driving instability in the wider macro economy. Research investigating the characteristics and behaviour of the housing market has suggested that under supply of housing is one of the key reasons for the high and increasing levels of house prices the nation has recently been experiencing. Consequently, much of the current government's housing policy is aimed at increasing the level of supply by reforming the planning system and increasing investment in the development of new housing. Under supply is also a major concern at the regional level, particularly …

Key Determinants Of The Voluntary Adoption Of Corporate Internet Reporting And Its Consequence On Firm Value : Evidence From Egypt, Amr Nazieh Mahmoud Ezat Elsayed Jan 2010

Key Determinants Of The Voluntary Adoption Of Corporate Internet Reporting And Its Consequence On Firm Value : Evidence From Egypt, Amr Nazieh Mahmoud Ezat Elsayed

Plymouth Business School Theses

Corporate Internet reporting represents one of the voluntary types which helps to achieve transparency by disseminating various types of timely information by using different presentation types and easily accessible tools. Corporate governance has become one of the most crucial issues in recent years due to the consequent scandals that have happened either in developed or developing countries. Therefore, most stakeholders demand greater transparency within the disclosed information provided by various companies. Consequently, the current study aims to contribute to the disclosure literature by examining the association between corporate Internet reporting and its main components, and corporate governance and ownership structure …

Minor Parties In English Local Government, Luke Samuel Sloan Jan 2010

Minor Parties In English Local Government, Luke Samuel Sloan

Plymouth Business School Theses

This thesis examines the electoral performance of minor parties in English local government from 1973 to 2008, a period that has seen a sharp increase in the numbers of candidates from such parties. Beginning with an overall assessment of the extent to which candidates from minor parties have contested local elections and the level of success in being elected, the thesis then explores the spatial distribution of minor party candidates, the types of people that become candidates and, considering the relative lack of electoral success, their motivations for standing. Traditional studies of party systems frequently exclude parties that do not …

The Tale Of Two Narratives: Nato As A Collective Defense And A Collective Security Institution, Anna M. Rulska Jan 2010

The Tale Of Two Narratives: Nato As A Collective Defense And A Collective Security Institution, Anna M. Rulska

Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations

The goal of this project is to determine NATO's present and future roles as a collective security organization and as a security alliance. In the past, NATO has dealt with both objectives under different and changing conditions. This paper argues that throughout the entirety of its history, NATO worked as both collective security and collective defense organization. The theoretical assumptions made within the paper are supported by the analysis of the past behavior of the Alliance in respect to the relationship between the narrative of collective security and that of collective defense, and changes within that relationship. Four specific periods …

The Market For Treaties, Natasha Affolder Jan 2010

The Market For Treaties, Natasha Affolder

All Faculty Publications

Corporations are consumers of treaty law. In this article, I empirically examine three biodiversity treaty regimes - the Convention on Biological Diversity, Ramsar Convention, and World Heritage Convention - to demonstrate that corporations implement or internalize treaty norms in a variety of ways that are not captured by the dominant model of treaty implementation – national implementation. As an exegetical model, I explore how corporations use biodiversity treaties as a source of private environmental standards. I focus on the interactions between mining and oil and gas companies and biodiversity treaties, as revealed through transactional documents, corporate reports, security law filings, …

Labor And The Bank: Investigating The Politics Of The World Bank's Employing Workers' Index, Suzan Kang Jan 2010

Labor And The Bank: Investigating The Politics Of The World Bank's Employing Workers' Index, Suzan Kang

Publications and Research

For many years, trade unions have pressured international financial organizations such as the World Bank to better incorporate protections for workers. A recent development in this contestation was the World Bank’s 2009 announcement regarding its controversial “Employing Workers Index” in its widely circulated Doing Business report. Trade unions had argued that the index, which promoted flexible labor market policies, did not respect the international norm of worker protections, and urged the World Bank to change the index. As a result, the Doing Business Group pledged to reform the Employing Workers Index and to create a new index on protecting workers. …

The Importance Of Open Access In Technology Transfer For Marine Ornamental Aquaculture: The Case Of Hobbyist-Led Breeding Initiative, Andrew L. Rhyne Jan 2010

The Importance Of Open Access In Technology Transfer For Marine Ornamental Aquaculture: The Case Of Hobbyist-Led Breeding Initiative, Andrew L. Rhyne

Arts & Sciences Faculty Publications

Access to peer-reviewed literature is often restricted to a limited segment of the target audience. Barriers are in place to prevent open access information. Here, I present a case study of how the internet and hobbyists are transforming both access and flow of information from closed circles to open dialogue within the field of marine ornamental fish rearing. This open approach is leading to innovation a rate remarkably faster and at a lower costs than could have been accomplished by traditional methods. Aquaculture societies, aquarium professionals, hobbyists, and scientists pursuing the captive production of species should embrace this movement. Whether …

Place And Food: A Relational Analysis Of Personal Food Environments, Meanings Of Place And Diet Quality, Ellen Desjardins Jan 2010

Place And Food: A Relational Analysis Of Personal Food Environments, Meanings Of Place And Diet Quality, Ellen Desjardins

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This study investigates the relational layers of meanings that people experience at places in their food environment, and how individuals express a sense of place through their collective interactions with, and understandings of, food places. It also explores the patterns of difference among these meanings of place and sense of place in terms of their potential association with dietary quality. The context of this inquiry was two-fold: first, the need identified by several population health researchers and to re-imagine place as relational and include it in the study of behavioural responses to the changing food environment; and secondly, my interest …

Spatial And Temporal Patterns In Nitrous Oxide Flux From Agricultural Soil In Southern Ontario, Michelle E. Zurbrigg Jan 2010

Spatial And Temporal Patterns In Nitrous Oxide Flux From Agricultural Soil In Southern Ontario, Michelle E. Zurbrigg

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This research examines spatial and temporal variations in N2O flux from agricultural clay loam in corn-wheat and corn-oat rotations in southern Ontario. Gas samples are collected by the chamber method following significant precipitation events, thaw events, fertilization events, and otherwise every two weeks over a two-year period. Crop type appears to influence the magnitude of N2O emisions, whereas N2O fluxes do not otherwise seem to vary by landscape position. The seasonal pattern of in situ N2O flux at Strawberry Creek (SC) indicates that the highest N2O emissions are occuring during …

An Apple A Day: Exploring Food And Agricultural Knowledge And Skill Among Children In Southern Ontario, Shannon Alberta Kornelsen Jan 2010

An Apple A Day: Exploring Food And Agricultural Knowledge And Skill Among Children In Southern Ontario, Shannon Alberta Kornelsen

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

While the literature on food has somewhat addressed rudimentary food skills and their importance in the creation and maintenance of a healthy population, there remains a serious lack of research into the importance of food and agricultural skills and knowledge transference to children, especially given the rise in diet-related illnesses. This study focuses on the perceived importance of food and agricultural education initiatives, as well as the opportunities and barriers that exist within the elementary school classroom to incorporate food and agricultural topics, in the context of southern Ontario, specifically Wellington County. Drawing on Wilkin's concept of ‘food citizenship’ as …

Plant Isotopes As Indicators Of N Cycling Processes In Agricultural Fields, Eric Thuss Jan 2010

Plant Isotopes As Indicators Of N Cycling Processes In Agricultural Fields, Eric Thuss

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

When nitrogen (N) availability exceeds biological demand, excess N, especially nitrate (NO3), may subsequently pollute ground and surface water. Agricultural practices in Southern Ontario typically supplement soils with organic and inorganic nutrients to aid in crop development, and employ various management techniques to limit nutrient loss. Excess N has several potential fates, which are controlled by the net effects of numerous N cycling reactions in the soil that are often difficult to measure directly. N cycling in soils is controlled in large part by soil moisture, as it affects microbial activity and soil redox conditions. Stable isotope geochemistry …

Paleolimnological Reconstruction Of Hydrologic Change In The Slave River And Great Slave Lake During The Past Millennium, Matthew Ennis Jan 2010

Paleolimnological Reconstruction Of Hydrologic Change In The Slave River And Great Slave Lake During The Past Millennium, Matthew Ennis

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

The Slave River Delta (SRD), NWT, represents a pivotal node in the upper Mackenzie Basin watershed and is a productive northern wetland landscape with a rich natural and cultural heritage. Concerns over environmental consequences of natural and anthropogenic-driven decline in river discharge as well as climate variability have prompted hydroecological sstudies to improve understanding of how this ecosystem functions over time and space. However, long-term natural hydrological variability of the Slave River system is not well documented and needs to be further developed. In order to provide a temperal context for understanding and evaluating the impacts of climate variability and …

Rethinking Biodiversity Conservation Effectiveness And Evaluation In The National Protected Areas Systems Of Tropical Islands: The Case Of Jamaica And The Dominican Republic, Suzanne Mae Camille Davis Jan 2010

Rethinking Biodiversity Conservation Effectiveness And Evaluation In The National Protected Areas Systems Of Tropical Islands: The Case Of Jamaica And The Dominican Republic, Suzanne Mae Camille Davis

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

Island conservation theory and practice with regard to conservation of tropical terrestrial biodiversity in protected areas systems has yet to be adequately addressed in conservation literature. This knowledge gap is identified as a key contributor to the adoption of scientific principles for in situ biodiversity conservation, and “universal” conservation and protected area management paradigms that are unsuitable for island contexts and geographical scale. The underlying assumption is that “universal” concepts of biodiversity conservation, protected areas management, and evaluation of their effectiveness are transferable to the ecological and socio-economic contexts of tropical islands. The expected outcome of this knowledge transfer is …

Witnessing From A Distance: Postwar Literary Representations Of The Holocaust, Miriam Carolin Raethel Jan 2010

Witnessing From A Distance: Postwar Literary Representations Of The Holocaust, Miriam Carolin Raethel

Theses and Dissertations (Comprehensive)

This thesis concerns itself with the possibilities and limits of witnessing the Holocaust from a distance. It analyzes the ways in which the notion of distance—temporal, geographical, linguistic, and aesthetic—influences, shapes, and alters the act of bearing witness to a remote historical event, which, because of its enormity, seemingly defies the act ofwitnessing and thus ofrepresentation. This study investigates the long-lasting impact ofthe Holocaust on subsequent generations, particularly on third-generation descendants ofvictims and perpetrators, and explores how the traumatic legacy ofthe Holocaust locates new forms of representation within the context ofpostmodernism, which, because of its emphasis on fragmentation, on the …

Ground Penetrating Radar Investigations In Upper Kama Potash Mines, Oleg N. Kovin Jan 2010

Ground Penetrating Radar Investigations In Upper Kama Potash Mines, Oleg N. Kovin

Doctoral Dissertations

"An understanding of the structure and state of the rock mass surrounding underground openings in the potash mines is critically important for safe mining, planning the methods of extraction of an orebody, and preventing the influx of ground water. Continuous common offset ground penetrating radar (GPR) data were acquired in the potash mine operated by the Joint Stock Company (JSC) "Silvinit" (Russia) as part of an investigation of both pre-existing fractures exposed by mine workings and other anomalous geological structures. During the course of GPR investigation, the electrical properties of salt-bearing units were determined, site-specific data acquisition techniques and object-oriented …

Fractured Membership: Deconstructing Territoriality To Secure Rights And Remedies For The Undocumented Worker, D. Carolina Nuñez Jan 2010

Fractured Membership: Deconstructing Territoriality To Secure Rights And Remedies For The Undocumented Worker, D. Carolina Nuñez

Faculty Scholarship

Relied upon but unwelcome, among us but uninvited, undocumented workers in the United States – now numbering over 8 million – labor on the border of inclusion and exclusion, between a status-based conception of membership and a territorial approach to membership. Although mere presence in the U.S. secures undocumented workers many of the same labor protections afforded to authorized workers, undocumented status often forecloses certain remedies otherwise available for employer breaches of those protections. Many commentators have criticized this effective status-based denial of rights to undocumented workers as inimical to the goals underlying labor and immigration law. While this Article …

Continued Viability: A Review Of The Life Sciences Library At Indiana University In A Time Of Institutional Change And Proposed Branch Library Downsizing, J B. Hill, Brian Winterman

Faculty Scholarship

There has been a growing realization that academic libraries need to change to serve a new generation of learners and researchers. Efforts to enhance the "Main Library" on campus with extended hours, coffee shops, and information commons have created modern, user-friendly environments that support changing student needs and expectations.  Generally fewer resources have been given to upgrading smaller branch libraries. The need to modernize older spaces along with the availability of electronic collections, campus demands for classroom/lab space and financial pressures on libraries have prompted a rethinking of the role of branch libraries. Actively pursuing initiatives to re-envision library spaces …

A Sedimentary Record Of Intense Storms And Environmental Change From A Coastal Freshwater Lake In Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Stephen G. Smith Jan 2010

A Sedimentary Record Of Intense Storms And Environmental Change From A Coastal Freshwater Lake In Rehoboth Beach, Delaware, Stephen G. Smith

Open Access Master's Theses

Located along the Mid-Atlantic coast of the United States, the state of Delaware is vulnerable to both tropical storms tracking from the warmer water of the southern Atlantic Ocean as well as strong extratropical storms, such as nor' easters, that are more common in the northern Atlantic. Although no hurricane has made direct landfall over Delaware in the past 200+ years of historical record keeping, several have passed with enough proximity to cause significant damage and erosion throughout the state's coastal communities. Effects from the Ash Wednesday Storm of 1962, which inflicted widespread flooding and destruction across coastal Delaware, indicate …

After The Vote: Women And Politics In 1920s Rhode Island, Hailie Denise Posey Jan 2010

After The Vote: Women And Politics In 1920s Rhode Island, Hailie Denise Posey

Open Access Master's Theses

Scholarship on women's history in the early twentieth century centers on the triumph of the suffrage movement with the enactment of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. Few scholars have addressed the role of women in partisan and electoral politics in the 1920s. The decade after suffrage has been dismissed as a time when the progressive reformers were losing ground, women voters failed to constitute a "women's bloc," and the pressures of modern society drew both men and women away from partisan politics. This study aims to uncover the political actions of newly enfranchised women in 1920s Rhode Island. The analysis …

Economic Risk Assessment Using The Fractal Market Hypothesis, Jonathan Blackledge, Marek Rebow Jan 2010

Economic Risk Assessment Using The Fractal Market Hypothesis, Jonathan Blackledge, Marek Rebow

Conference papers

This paper considers the Fractal Market Hypothesi (FMH) for assessing the risk(s) in developing a financial portfolio based on data that is available through the Internet from an increasing number of sources. Most financial risk management systems are still based on the Efficient Market Hypothesis which often fails due to the inaccuracies of the statistical models that underpin the hypothesis, in particular, that financial data are based on stationary Gaussian processes. The FMH considered in this paper assumes that financial data are non-stationary and statistically self-affine so that a risk analysis can, in principal, be applied at any time scale …
