Culture And Exchange: The Jews Of Königsberg, 1700-1820, Jill Storm Jan 2010

Culture And Exchange: The Jews Of Königsberg, 1700-1820, Jill Storm

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation traces the history of the Jewish community in Königsberg, East Prussia, from its founding in 1700 to the aftermath of the Prussian Emancipation Edict of 1812, as well as the early stages of Jewish embourgeoisement and political integration. My project combines aspects of a traditional communal history with newer trends in Jewish history, including an integrated discussion of economic and cultural life. I argue that the commercial successes of the Jewish mercantile elite in Königsberg, in particular of the Friedländer family, set the stage for the publication of ha-Measef and the local flowering of the haskalah. Moreover, I …

Valley Of Heart's Delight: Orchards To Hard Drives In The San Jose Mercury News, Megan Lynn Alpers

Master's Theses

This research was conducted to explore how the San Jose Mercury News (formerly San Jose Mercury Herald) covered the Santa Clara Valley's transition from an agricultural community known as "The Valley of Heart's Delight" to Silicon Valley, focusing on the changes made in the reporting of farm and ranch news.

The time period surveyed in this thesis is from 1935 to 2000. The purpose was to establish any changes to reporting agricultural news over the years. A social history of agricultural journalism in the San Jose Mercury News over a 65-year period provided insight into how the farming industry was …

Difference And Accommodation In Visigothic Gaul And Spain, Craig H. Schamp Jan 2010

Difference And Accommodation In Visigothic Gaul And Spain, Craig H. Schamp

Master's Theses

This thesis examines primary sources in fifth- and sixth-century Gaul and Spain and finds a surprising lack of concern for ethnicity. Authors in the fifth century expressed concern for the sanctity and safety of the church, their patria, and themselves, but seldom mention any issues that could be related to ethnicity. Even the Arian Christianity of the Goths seems to be of little or no concern. This changes in the middle of the sixth century, when Arian Christianity becomes an overarching issue in Visigothic history. The sources portray nearly every political concern in the second half of the sixth century …

An Experimental Analysis Of The Demand For Payday Loans, Bart J. Wilson, David W. Findlay, James W. Meehan Jr., Charissa P. Wellford, Karl Schurter

Economics Faculty Articles and Research

The payday loan industry is one of the fastest growing segments of the consumer financial services market in the United States. We design an environment similar to the one that payday loan customers face and then conduct a laboratory experiment to examine what effect, if any, the existence of payday loans has on individuals' abilities to manage and to survive financial setbacks. Our primary objective is to examine whether access to payday loans improves or worsens the likelihood of financial survival in our experiment. We also test the degree to which people's use of payday loans affects their ability to …

A Mixed-Methods Research Study Comparing Observations During Integrated Curriculum Lessons With Traditional Single-Subject Lessons For Primary-Age Students, Ksenia Sergeevna Zhbanova Jan 2010

A Mixed-Methods Research Study Comparing Observations During Integrated Curriculum Lessons With Traditional Single-Subject Lessons For Primary-Age Students, Ksenia Sergeevna Zhbanova

Graduate Research Papers

This study examined teacher talk and actions under two conditions: ( 1) subject-integrated lessons of an integrated curriculum unit on African culture ( experimental condition); and (2) single subject-focused lessons of a traditional separate subject curriculum on mathematics time and money measurement (control condition). The study sought to define and compare characteristics of both curriculum approaches. Although the study was primarily qualitative with observations being recorded by the researcher that were subsequently sorted into categories through a constant comparison method, counts of frequency of observations in categories were recorded, resulting in a mixed-methods design.

The observations were collected in two …

Incorporating Mythic And Interpretive Analysis In The Investigation Of Hearing Loss On The Family Farm, Mark Meister, Theresa Hest, Ann Burnett Jan 2010

Incorporating Mythic And Interpretive Analysis In The Investigation Of Hearing Loss On The Family Farm, Mark Meister, Theresa Hest, Ann Burnett

The Qualitative Report

Despite knowing about the dangers of hearing loss, farmers typically choose not to protect their hearing. Examining the myth of farm life, this study aims to discern whether rhetorical myths influence farmers' decisions to wear hearing protection. Researchers conducted 40 interviews with farmers regarding farm life and hearing loss. Results suggest that farmers typically do not use hearing protection; their answers reflect the myths of sacrifice and safety. Analysis demonstrates that knowledge of the relationship between myth and practice should impact future attempts to change farmers' behaviors

Spatial Distribution Of Soda Straws Growth Rates Of The Coufin Cave (Vercors, France), Yves Perrette, Stéphane Jaillet Jan 2010

Spatial Distribution Of Soda Straws Growth Rates Of The Coufin Cave (Vercors, France), Yves Perrette, Stéphane Jaillet

International Journal of Speleology

The Choranche Cave system (Vercors, France) is an excellent locality for measuring the growth rates of large numbers soda straws. This is especially the case for the Coufin Cave, as enlargement of the cave entrance in 1875 led to a change in stalactite color from brown to white, thus providing a reliable chronomarker. The date of this brown-to-white calcite transition has been confirmed by lamina counting. We measured and georeferenced the growth-lengths of 306 soda straws in a 1m2 area of the roof of the Coufin Cave entrance chamber. Because of the very slow and sometimes inexistent water feeding …

Modern C, O, And H Isotope Composition Of Speleothem And Dripwater From Modrič Cave, Eastern Adriatic Coast (Croatia), Maša Surić, Zvjezdana Roller-Lutz, Magda Mandić, Ines Krajcar Bronić, Mladen Juračić

International Journal of Speleology

Modrič Cave is a shallow horizontal cave situated in the middle of the eastern Adriatic coast (Croatia). The cave entrance is located 120 m from the coast at an altitude of 32 m above sea level, and due to its position on the SW slope of the Dinaridic mountain range, a Mediterranean climatic influence is dominant. Due to the stable environmental conditions [(15.6 ± 0.1) °C] Modrič Cave was recognized as a potential site for detailed palaeoclimatic studies. Isotope analyses of modern carbonate speleothems, rain and dripwater were conducted in order to evaluate the isotopic equilibrium conditions. The δ18O composition …

43 | Nahal Haggit: A Roman And Mamluk Farmstead In The Southern Carmel, Jon Seligman Jan 2010

43 | Nahal Haggit: A Roman And Mamluk Farmstead In The Southern Carmel, Jon Seligman

IAA Reports—Monograph Series of the Israel Antiquities Authority

This volume presents the results of three seasons of IAA salvage excavations during 1992–1993 at this farmstead site in the Ramot Menashe region. It was occupied in three phases during the Early and Middle Roman and Mamluk periods. Its first occupants included Jews or Samaritans, as evidenced by miqva’ot. It was abandoned after the First or Second Jewish Revolt, then resettled, possibly by Roman veterans. In the 13th century a small village was established here within the Mamluk-controlled region and abandoned sometime later. The finds include pottery and glass vessels, coins and other small finds.

Addressing And Improving Technology Integration Skills For Preservice Teachers Using The Teacher Work Sample, Charles R. Graham, Tonya Tripp, Nancy Wentworth Jan 2010

Addressing And Improving Technology Integration Skills For Preservice Teachers Using The Teacher Work Sample, Charles R. Graham, Tonya Tripp, Nancy Wentworth

Faculty Publications

This study explores the efforts at Brigham Young University to improve preservice candidates’ technology integration using the Teacher Work Sample (TWS) as an assessment tool. Baseline data that was analyzed from 95 TWSs indicated that students were predominantly using technology for productivity and information presentation purposes even though they had been taught to use technology for active student learning. Researchers discovered that decisions made about technology integration were heavily influenced by field instructors and TWS rubrics. An intervention plan was developed to train field instructors and 99 TWSs were analyzed the following year. The TWSs showed noticeable improvements including increases …

Determinants Of Self-Employment In The United States, Viktoriya Nikolova, Michael S. Bargar Jan 2010

Determinants Of Self-Employment In The United States, Viktoriya Nikolova, Michael S. Bargar

Undergraduate Economic Review

The prominence entrepreneurs have occupied in the popular imagination belies their relative neglect in formal economic theory. This paper adds to the growing body of work on entrepreneurs by examining the characteristics of self-employed individuals in the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth 1997. We believe our article to be the first that uses this fresh body of data for this purpose. Employing the standard binomial probit model with a list of potentially significant variables drawn from existing literature, we discovered that women are significantly less likely to be self-employed than men.

Participatory Planning For A Promised Land: Citizen-Led, Comprehensive Land Use Planning In New York’S Adirondack Park, Ann Hope Ruzow Holland

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

New York’s Adirondack Park is internationally recognized for its biological diversity. Greater in size than Yellowstone, Everglades, Glacier, and Grand Canyon National Park combined, the Adirondacks are the largest protected area within the Northern Appalachian/Acadian Eco-Region and within the contiguous United States. Ecologists, residents of the Park, and others are concerned about rapid land use change occurring within the borders of the Park. Almost half of the six million acres encompassed by the Park boundary is privately-owned, where 80% of land use decisions fall within the jurisdiction of local governments. The comprehensive planning process of one such local government, the …

Strategic Asymmetric Multicultural Alliances In Business, Anthony James Scriffignano Jan 2010

Strategic Asymmetric Multicultural Alliances In Business, Anthony James Scriffignano

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Global economics and other factors make it increasingly difficult for organizations to operate within the boundaries of one country in a rational way (e.g., leveraging best practices, profitable, achieving goals). In this study, I looked at strategic business alliances, transcending simple quid pro quo relationships to deliver ongoing partner value. I refined my study to multicultural relationships, having differing cultural identities (i.e., ideas, heritage, language, or demographics from differing geographies). Finally, I considered asymmetry (i.e., inequity in working relationship). Using a mixed-methodology design, I surveyed alliance participants and interviewed participants from selected alliances. A multi-case study addresses emergent themes of …

Examining The Relationship Between Trust And Culture In The Consultant-Client Relationship, Stephanos Avakian, Timothy Clark, Joanne Roberts Jan 2010

Examining The Relationship Between Trust And Culture In The Consultant-Client Relationship, Stephanos Avakian, Timothy Clark, Joanne Roberts

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This chapter examines the dimensions of inter-organizational and interpersonal trust as they are manifested in the consultant–client interaction, viewed within the ‘cultural spheres’ framework (Schneider and Barsoux, 2003). The chapter argues that the alignment or misalignment of culture(s) helps foster or hinder the presence of trust in the consultant–client relationship. We support our argument by demonstrating how culture becomes an important informative resource from which consultants and clients manage their expectations and risk taking. In inter-organizational contexts, trust is developed through artifacts and formal procedures that are shared by both parties. In interpersonal contexts, trust is developed through the mutual …

Who Is Taking Your Business Across Borders? Harnessing Human Capital For Successful Regionalization In Asia, Richard Raymond Smith, C. Switzer, E. Craig Jan 2010

Who Is Taking Your Business Across Borders? Harnessing Human Capital For Successful Regionalization In Asia, Richard Raymond Smith, C. Switzer, E. Craig

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

As the dynamics of globalisation change, Asia has become the focal point for business growth. With the region’s immense diversity across cultures, language, politics, economic development, climate, geography, populations and resources, human capital management is perhaps the most critical and most vexing success factor for companies seeking to invest/operate/grow/expand here. To develop this report, we explored the question of successful regionalisation in Asia from a human capital perspective. We asked, What human capital challenges do business and HR leaders face in their quest to succeed in Asia? What initiatives have they launched to overcome these challenges? And what business outcomes …

Extraction, Territory, And Inequalities: Gas In The Bolivian Chaco, Denise Bebbington, Anthony J. Bebbington Jan 2010

Extraction, Territory, And Inequalities: Gas In The Bolivian Chaco, Denise Bebbington, Anthony J. Bebbington

Sustainability and Social Justice

Conflicts over extractive industry have emerged as one of the most visible and potentially explosive terrains for struggles over distribution, territory, and inequality in the Andes. We explore these relationships in Bolivia, focusing on gas extraction in the Chaco region of the southeastern department of Tarija. We consider how the expansion of extractive industry intersects with territorializing projects of state, sub-national elites, and indigenous actors as well as with questions of inequality and inequity. We conclude that arguments over the territorial constitution of Bolivia are inevitably also arguments over gas and the contested concepts of equity underlying its governance. © …

A Social And Political History Of The National Radio Astronomy Observatory At Green Bank, Wv, Lenora G. Kenwolf

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

This thesis examines the role of the people of West Virginia in bringing the NRAO to Green Bank, West Virginia. It explores the impact of the space race, big science and the Cold War on a small rural community nestled in the heart of the Appalachian Mountains during the 1950s. There has been very little scholarship done on how local residents and state politicians helped to shape big science. The thesis opens with a brief history of early radio astronomy starting with the work of Karl Jansky and Grote Reber. It discusses the influence of HAM radio on radio astronomy. …

Performing The Other: Indigenous Identity And Regional Resistance In Sonoran Literature Of The 1980'S, Andrew M. Gordus Jan 2010

Performing The Other: Indigenous Identity And Regional Resistance In Sonoran Literature Of The 1980'S, Andrew M. Gordus

World Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications

During the decade of the 1980’s there occurs a preoccupation, presence and notable change in the representation of the indígena in the cultural production of the State of Sonora. This articulation of a modified ethnic discourse is a product of the economic and social changes that impacted the region during this period. Through a detailed examination of three Sonoran writers we observe how this ethnic discourse leads to a reformulation the traditional images of the indígena and reflects the negotiation between local and national interests to determine the meaning of the region, its identity and its place within the nation.

Places For Races: The White Supremacist Movement Imagines U.S. Geography, Barbara Perry, Randy Blazak Jan 2010

Places For Races: The White Supremacist Movement Imagines U.S. Geography, Barbara Perry, Randy Blazak

Journal of Hate Studies

Increasingly, scholars are acknowledging that racial and other forms of animus assume a spatial dimension. Not only does intercultural hostility take different forms depending on location, but so, too, does the concomitant bias-motivated violence imply “places for races.” The very intent and motive of hate crimes are grounded in the perceived need of perpetrators to defend carefully crafted boundaries. While these boundaries are largely cultural, they may also take on a real, physical form, at least from the perpetrator’s perspective. Nowhere is this more evident than in the geographical imagination of the White Supremacist movement. This paper will trace the …

Rhetorics Of Place And Ecological Relationships: The Rhetorical Construction Of Narragansett Bay, Matthew Ortoleva Jan 2010

Rhetorics Of Place And Ecological Relationships: The Rhetorical Construction Of Narragansett Bay, Matthew Ortoleva

Open Access Dissertations

As an ethnographic study of how language and rhetorical acts are used to construct, challenge, and change ecological relationships to the Narragansett Bay watershed, this dissertation argues that there are three architectonic, master discourses that dominate the discursive domain of the Narragansett Bay watershed: the discourse of science, the discourse of economics, and the discourse of spirituality. These master discourses construct and authorize particular world-views, give human agents the vocabulary to speak about the world in particular ways, and produce multiple other sub-discourses, which in turn construct different ecological relationships to Narragansett Bay and lead to particular attitudes, beliefs, and …
