Networks Of European Cities In Worlds Of Global Economic And Environmental Change, Stanley D. Brunn, Lomme Devriendt, Andrew Boulton, Ben Derudder, Frank Witlox

Geography Faculty Publications

Geographers have a long tradition of classifying cities using a number of criteria. Population size, industrial production, capital city functions, airline connections, sites of sporting events and major headquarters and banks are among them. While these studies are useful in looking at cities in an economy and population at a given point of time, they are less useful in assessing rapidly occurring changes within a regional or global system. Our research represents a new approach to classify cities and urban systems; we use the volume and networks/linkages or flows associated with electronic Information or “Knowledge worlds.” We argue that in …

Eckhardt, Jassir Witta, Jian Zhong, Razvan Arsenescu, Violeta Arsenescu, Yu Wang, Sarbani Ghoshal, Marcielle C. De Beer, Frederick C. De Beer, Willem J.S. De Villiers

Internal Medicine Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Serum Amyloid A (SAA) is a major acute phase protein of unknown function. SAA is mostly expressed in the liver, but also in other tissues including the intestinal epithelium. SAA reportedly has anti-bacterial effects, and because inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD) result from a breakdown in homeostatic interactions between intestinal epithelia and bacteria, we hypothesized that SAA is protective during experimental colitis.

METHODS: Intestinal SAA expression was measured in mouse and human samples. Dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) colitis was induced in SAA 1/2 double knockout (DKO) mice and in wildtype controls. Anti-bacterial effects of SAA1/2 were tested in intestinal epithelial …

Energy Trade Brinkmanship Between The European Union And Russia, Alla Khalitova Nov 2010

Energy Trade Brinkmanship Between The European Union And Russia, Alla Khalitova

Undergraduate Economic Review

This paper proposes a brinkmanship game of unilateral deterrence to model the dynamics of energy trade between the European Union and Russia. Nuclear deterrence and crisis bargaining theory is extended to show the relationship between a spectrum of risk and trade dependency. Russia and the EU are mutually dependent upon continued natural gas trade, but Russia has an asymmetrical incentive to disrupt the status quo in order to extract a concession from the EU. It can do so by initiating a crisis that escalates toward a mutually disastrous gas shutoff through sequential bargaining. The risk of a gas shutoff is …

Mcgill Wetland Model: Evaluation Of A Peatland Carbon Simulator Developed For Global Assessments, F St. Hilaire, J Wu, Nigel T. Roulet, Steve Frolking, P M. Lafleur, E R. Humphreys, V Arora Nov 2010

Mcgill Wetland Model: Evaluation Of A Peatland Carbon Simulator Developed For Global Assessments, F St. Hilaire, J Wu, Nigel T. Roulet, Steve Frolking, P M. Lafleur, E R. Humphreys, V Arora

Earth Sciences

We developed the McGill Wetland Model (MWM) based on the general structure of the Peatland Carbon Simulator (PCARS) and the Canadian Terrestrial Ecosystem Model. Three major changes were made to PCARS: (1) the light use efficiency model of photosynthesis was replaced with a biogeochemical description of photosynthesis; (2) the description of autotrophic respiration was changed to be consistent with the formulation of photosynthesis; and (3) the cohort, multilayer soil respiration model was changed to a simple one box peat decomposition model divided into an oxic and anoxic zones by an effective water table, and a one-year residence time litter pool. …

Improving Student Achievement Through Professional Learning Communities, Mindy L. Roberts Nov 2010

Improving Student Achievement Through Professional Learning Communities, Mindy L. Roberts

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

This study determined how general education teachers in a Midwestern school district perceived their personal skill level in working collaboratively and focusing on academic results while working in a Professional Learning Community (PLC). The overarching question for the research was: Do educator perceptions of their personal skill level in working collaboratively and focusing on academic results while implementing a Professional Learning Community have an effect on student achievement? The study looked at teacher perceptions within the three themes of PLCs: (a) assuring students learn at high levels, (b) creating a culture of collaboration, and (c) focusing on academic results. Student …

Land Use As It Relates To Land Slope, James D. Plourde, Bryan C. Pijanowski Nov 2010

Land Use As It Relates To Land Slope, James D. Plourde, Bryan C. Pijanowski

GIS Day

The goal of this project is to analyze the relationship between the slope of land and agricultural land use. The output was analyzed to determine a threshold point at which agriculture practices drop off in relation to higher slope values. Slope of the land is important to agricultural practices because it impacts drainage and net crop primary production. Agricultural land was extracted from the 2001 National Land Cover Dataset using reclassification tools in ArcGIS 9.3. The slope of the contiguous United States was derived from the United States Geological Survey National Elevation Dataset by using the slope tool in the …

Through The Lens Of A Global Educator: Examining Personal Perceptions Regarding The Construction Of World-Mindedness, Kenneth T. Carano Nov 2010

Through The Lens Of A Global Educator: Examining Personal Perceptions Regarding The Construction Of World-Mindedness, Kenneth T. Carano

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

As we embark upon the 21st century, the world is becoming increasingly interconnected. Yet, despite increasing globalization, educational systems are not reflecting this phenomenon. The overwhelming majority of countries, including the United States, still emphasize nationalistic curricula (Parker, 2008; Tye, 2009). Global education is a movement whose supporters advocate an education reflecting the push towards globalization by providing students with the components necessary to live and thrive in an increasingly interconnected world system. Global educators have a common bond as advocates that a global perspective needs to be developed in the classroom. The degree to which this is being done …

The Intentions Of Florida Educational Leadership Graduate Students To Pursue Administrative Positions, Daniel Wayne Eadens Nov 2010

The Intentions Of Florida Educational Leadership Graduate Students To Pursue Administrative Positions, Daniel Wayne Eadens

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examined the intentions of educational leadership students in Florida university graduate programs in regards to demographics and self-assessed leadership characteristics. The study employed a non-experimental design wherein Regression, ANOVA, and Multiple Regression statistical techniques were employed to explore intent. It examined the influences that self-assessed leadership behavior, gender, number of credits completed, and age had on respondent intentions as measured by the Leadership Practice Inventory and the Demographics and Intentions Questionnaire. The highest assessed priori sample size was 159 when power was set at 0.80, alpha was 0.05, and the expected effect size was set at .10. This …

The Wooster Voice (Wooster, Oh), 2010-11-05, Wooster Voice Editors

The Voice: 2001-2011

This is the Wooster Voice from November of 2010. The front page of this edition of the newspaper features a large article about an unprovoked assault on a female student. One of the members of Zeta Phi Gamma, a sorority on campus, was physically assaulted by what she believes to be a male student outside of a house party. The man asked her if she was a member of Zeta, and when she responded affirmatively, he punched her in the side of her face. President Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden made a visit to Ohio for midterm elections. A review …
