The quantification of carbon fluxes between the terrestrial biosphere and the atmosphere is of scientific importance and also relevant to climate-policy making. Eddy covariance flux towers provide continuous measurements of ecosystem-level exchange of carbon dioxide spanning diurnal, synoptic, seasonal, and interannual time scales. However, these measurements only represent the fluxes at the scale of the tower footprint. Here we used remotely sensed data from the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) to upscale gross primary productivity (GPP) data from eddy covariance flux towers to the continental scale. We first combined GPP and MODIS data for 42 AmeriFlux towers encompassing a wide …

Genotype-Phenotype Diversity Of Beta-Thalassemia In Malaysia: Treatment Options And Emerging Therapies, G. Elizabeth, T.J.A.M. Ann

Research Publications (2006 to 2010)

The haemoglobinopathies and thalassemias represent the most common inherited monogenic disorders in the world. Beta-thalassaemia major is an ongoing public health problem in Malaysia. Prior to 2004, the country had no national policy for screening and registry for thalassemia. In the absence of a national audit, the true figure of the extent of thalassemia in the Malaysian population was largely presumptive from micro-mapping studies from various research workers in the country. The estimated carrier rate for beta-thalassemia in Malaysia is 3.5-4. There were 4768 transfusion dependent thalassemia major patients as of May 2010 (Data from National Thalassemia Registry).

Latent Demand For Transit: The Case Of Canberra's Proposed Lrt, Cameron Gordon Jan 2010

Latent Demand For Transit: The Case Of Canberra's Proposed Lrt, Cameron Gordon

World Transit Research

Canberra, the capital of Australia, is a city with two modes of mechanised passenger travel: traditional bus and automobile. While Canberra is the capital of the country, it is a relatively small city, with a current population of approximately 340,000 which is relatively spread out with a low overall average population density. Recently the local government (the government of the Australian Capital Territory) submitted a bid to the Australian federal government to fund a light rail system for the city.
This paper examines the issues surrounding serving low and medium density communities with structural transit alternatives such as light rail …

Mad Subalgebras And Lie Subalgebras Of An Enveloping Algebra, Xin Tang Jan 2010

Mad Subalgebras And Lie Subalgebras Of An Enveloping Algebra, Xin Tang

College of Health, Science, and Technology

Let µ(?(1)) denote the enveloping algebra of the two-dimensional nonabelian Lie algebra ?(1) over a base field K. We study the maximal abelian ad-nilpotent (mad) associative subalgebras and finite-dimensional Lie subalgebras of µ(?(1)). We first prove that the set of noncentral elements of µ(?(1)) admits the Dixmier partition, µ(?(1))?K=? 5i=1 ?i, and establish characterization theorems for elements in ?i, i=1,3,4. Then we determine the elements in ?i, i=1,3, and describe the eigenvalues for the inner derivation ad Bx,x??i, i=3,4. We also derive other useful results for elements in ?i, i=2,3,4,5. As an application, we find all framed mad subalgebras of …

Not Everything In Its Path Confusion And Coping On The Bolivar Penninsula After Hurricane Ike, Mary Barnes Jan 2010

Not Everything In Its Path Confusion And Coping On The Bolivar Penninsula After Hurricane Ike, Mary Barnes

Theses & ETDs

This is an ethnographic study of the social effects of Hurricane Ike (2008) on Gilchrist and Crystal Beach, two communities on the Bolivar Peninsula, a strip of land near Galveston, TX. Using community members experiences, I examine the ways in which their recovery efforts were complicated by disputes with insurance agencies and engagement with the media. I then discuss some of the coping mechanisms that residents employed, including reestablishing community groups, using online communication tools, comparing Hurricane Ike to the Hurricane Katrina, verbally affirming their resilience, and reflecting on the importance of place and material belongings. I found that, nine …

Beyond Creativity: Copyright As Knowledge Law, Michael J. Madison Jan 2010

Beyond Creativity: Copyright As Knowledge Law, Michael J. Madison

Vanderbilt Journal of Entertainment & Technology Law

The Supreme Court's copyright jurisprudence of the last 100 years has embraced the creativity trope. Spurred in part by themes associated with the story of "romantic authorship" in the 19th and 20th centuries, copyright critiques likewise ask, "Who is creative?" "How should creativity be protected (or not) and encouraged (or not)?" and "Why protect creativity?" Policy debates and scholarship in recent years have focused on the concept of creativity in framing copyright disputes, transactions, and institutions, reinforcing the notion that these are the central copyright questions. I suggest that this focus on the creativity trope is unhelpful. I argue that …

The Preferential Option For The Poor - Liberation Theology, A Call To Action, Megan Levy Jan 2010

The Preferential Option For The Poor - Liberation Theology, A Call To Action, Megan Levy

Theology Conference Papers

Liberation Theology is a school of action which stems humanity of Christ which makes Him one with us, in suffering, in injustice, in loneliness, in poverty, and precisely because of them He understands and loves us deeply, keeping us company through the deserts of our lives. Although Stephen Pattison declares that the only way God can appear to a starving man is in “a loaf of bread, not in prayers or words of comfort.” He seems to speak from a very “first world – materialistic” view, away from Third World realities. It is then that a developed country pastoral theology …

The Invention Of Creativity: The Emergence Of A Discourse, Camilla Nelson Jan 2010

The Invention Of Creativity: The Emergence Of A Discourse, Camilla Nelson

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

Creativity is increasingly cited as the key to social and economic change in the 21st century. It is also a very modern concept — making its first appearance as an English noun in 1875. This paper investigates the cultural construction of creativity in the context of the history of ideas. It understands creativity not as a given human attribute or ability, but as an idea that emerges out of specific historical moments, shaped by the discourses of politics, science, commerce, and nation. It shifts the ground of analysis away from the naturalised models that have traditionally dominated the field of …

The Impact Of Intercultural Sensitivity On Ethnocentrism And Intercultural Communication Apprehension, Guo-Ming Chen Jan 2010

The Impact Of Intercultural Sensitivity On Ethnocentrism And Intercultural Communication Apprehension, Guo-Ming Chen

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

As one of the dimensions of intercultural communication competence, intercultural sensitivity has shown significant impact on different culture-related variables. Among them, ethnocentrism and communication apprehension in the intercultural communication context remains unexplored. This study attempts to explore the relationship, if any, among the variables ethnocentrism, intercultural communication apprehension, and intercultural sensitivity. The survey research method was used to collect data from 432 students at a midsized university in the northeastern area of the United States. The results of Pearson product-moment correlations and stepwise regression analyses confirm the negative relationship between intercultural sensitivity and the two variables. Directions for future research …

Ordinary Words: Towards A New Understanding Of The 19th Century Mormon Male Diary, Sara Jordan Jan 2010

Ordinary Words: Towards A New Understanding Of The 19th Century Mormon Male Diary, Sara Jordan

Arrington Student Writing Award Winners

“It is hard to believe that any group of comparable size, with the possible exception of the Puritans and the Quakers, has been as relentless as the Mormons in writing diaries and autobiographies.” So wrote Davis Bitton, in the Introduction of the 1977 publication Guide to Mormon Diaries and Autobiographies, an index of nearly 3,000 published and unpublished works. Bitton, a close friend and colleague of Mormon History Scholar Leonard Arrington worked with Arrington for decades to create “a research program of [God’s] people’s history.” At the heart of that program was and continues to be the diary. Bitton and …

Incubation Push Or Business Pull? Investigating The Geography Of Us Business Incubators, Haifeng Qian, Kingsley E. Haynes Jan 2010

Incubation Push Or Business Pull? Investigating The Geography Of Us Business Incubators, Haifeng Qian, Kingsley E. Haynes

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

The primary purposes of this paper are to present the geographic distribution of US business incubators and to explore geographically bounded factors that influence the location of business incubators. Our data show that US business incubators are unevenly distributed across the urban/rural division, states, as well as counties. Factor analysis identifies three common factors from 27 demographic, social, and economic variables drawn from publicly available data at the county level. These factors include agglomeration, welfare, and business/entrepreneurship. The results of binominal logistic regressions suggest that incubators are more likely to be found in counties with high levels of agglomeration but …

The Journey Of Servant-Leadership, Larry C. Spears

International Journal of Servant-Leadership

With great joy, I want to commend all our authors in this year's journal. The depth of thought and willingness to enter the crucible of life with an enduring vision of servant leadership have been very inspiring to me. The articles collected in this volume represent many countries, varied points of view, and a vast landscape of human courage. In my own life, I recently decided to take a purposeful voyage of my own through a landscape that has captured my imagination for some years. As the song says, I took a trip on Route 66. The famed American highway …

Part 3: Sizing Up The Competition: Hampton Roads Versus Other East Coast Container Ports, Regional Studies Institute, Old Dominion University

State of the Region Reports: Hampton Roads

Over the past decade, the Port of Virginia has slipped to third place on the East Coast behind Savannah, Ga. Perhaps we can reverse this by means of Norfolk Southern Corp.’s Heartland Corridor and the recent lease acquisition of the APM Maersk facility in Portsmouth.

National Collegiate Honors Council Monographs

When Joan Digby first proposed taking collegiate honors students into our national parks, I jumped at the chance. Within minutes of reading her email, I not only responded with an enthusiastic “Yes!” but went so far as to volunteer the resources of the Southern Utah University Honors Program to get things started. Nestled among 5 national parks in southwestern Utah, I felt our campus would be a natural focal point for the kind of program Joan envisioned. Within weeks we had laid the groundwork for a proof-of-concept pilot project at nearby Bryce Canyon National Park. Little did I know at …

Recovering The Temple Mount The Politics Of Place, Memory And Identity, Britney Summit-Gil Jan 2010

Recovering The Temple Mount The Politics Of Place, Memory And Identity, Britney Summit-Gil

Theses & ETDs

The Temple Mount/Haram es-Sharif has been a center of religious worship and political turmoil for millennia. It is the site of an important Islamic shrine and mosque, and the Western Wallthe holiest site in Judaism. Jewish tradition marks it as the site of Solomons Temple, Herods Temple, and the Third Temple of the Messianic Age. The following explores the Temple Mount through Jewish literature and Israeli archaeology to understand why, in recent years, the site has drawn national and global attention. The survey is framed in the context of social memory and identity to understand the role the Temple Mount …
