Contrasting Patterns Of Phylogeographic Relationships In Sympatric Sister Species Of Ironclad Beetles (Zopheridae: Phloeodes Spp.) In California's Transverse Ranges, Michael S. Caterino, Maxi Polihronakis

Publications

Comparative phylogeography of sympatric sibling species provides an opportunity to isolate the effects of geography and demographics on the evolutionary history of two lineages over the same, known time scale. In the current study, we investigated the phylogeographic structure of two zopherid beetle species, Phloeodes diabolicus and P. plicatus, where their ranges overlap in California's Transverse Ranges.

Fairy Tale Films, Pauline Greenhill, Sidney Eve Matrix Jan 2010

Fairy Tale Films, Pauline Greenhill, Sidney Eve Matrix

All USU Press Publications

In this, the first collection of essays to address the development of fairy tale film as a genre, Pauline Greenhill and Sidney Eve Matrix stress, "the mirror of fairy-tale film reflects not so much what its audience members actually are but how they see themselves and their potential to develop (or, likewise, to regress)." As Jack Zipes says further in the foreword, “Folk and fairy tales pervade our lives constantly through television soap operas and commercials, in comic books and cartoons, in school plays and storytelling performances, in our superstitions and prayers for miracles, and in our dreams and daydreams. …

Exploring Desert Stone, Steven K. Madsen

All USU Press Publications

The confluence of the Green and Colorado Rivers, now in Canyonlands National Park, near popular tourist destination Moab, still cannot be reached or viewed easily. Much of the surrounding region remained remote and rarely visited for decades after settlement of other parts of the West. The first U.S. government expedition to explore the canyon country and the Four Corners area was led by John Macomb of the army's topographical engineers. The soldiers and scientists followed in part the Old Spanish Trail, whose location they documented and verified. Seeking to find the confluence of the Colorado and the Green and looking …

Tree Rings And Earthquakes, Matthew F. Bekker Jan 2010

Tree Rings And Earthquakes, Matthew F. Bekker

Wasatch Dendroclimatology Research

The lithosphere, earth’s rigid outer shell comprising crust and upper mantle rock, is broken into about 14 tectonic plates (Christopherson 2009) that move a few centimeters per year over superheated, pliable rock underneath. Forces within earth’s interior push, pull and twist the plates in different directions, producing three types of plate boundaries: convergent (colliding with one another), divergent (moving away from one another) and transform (sliding past one another). Earthquakes occur when plates become locked together, building strain between and within them that is suddenly released, sending a burst of seismic waves that cause shaking and displacement of the surface. …

Advancing Individual And Societal Development At The Community Level: Role Of Ngo Microcredit And Leadership Training, Denise M. Lucy, Jayati Ghosh, Edward Kujawa

Collected Faculty Scholarship

In many countries throughout the world micro-credit loans are utilized to empower women by seeking to reduce the poverty of families and communities. Originally Non-governmental organizations’ (NGO) microcredit programs focused on funding women’s businesses. In so doing, NGOs encourage and support women’s empowerment leading to community building, as well as to advancing women’s individual gender equity. This descriptive study is based upon interviews of 100 women who participated in microcredit loan programs run by a Bangladeshi NGO, entitled, Nari Uddog Kendra (NUK). The case study examines the participation and impact of NUK’s business development and leadership training programs. The study …

Rescaling The Past Through Mosaic Historical Cartography, Donald Lafreniere, Douglas Rivet Jan 2010

Rescaling The Past Through Mosaic Historical Cartography, Donald Lafreniere, Douglas Rivet

Geography & Environment Publications

Researchers of our past have long used historical maps to place events and to uncover the physical form of an area. A series of maps may be employed to understand a region beyond the extent of a single map. However, rarely are these maps included in publications of research findings. At best, a modern cartographic reproduction will be created to depict the research area. Our maps, created for a historical atlas of Sandwich, Ontario, Canada, are noteworthy for their use of original historical maps in a mosaic to recreate the past. Our objective was to overcome the international boundary between …

Linking Health Inequality And Environmental Justice: Articulating A Precautionary Framework For Research And Action, Sarah Wakefield, Jamie Baxter Jan 2010

Linking Health Inequality And Environmental Justice: Articulating A Precautionary Framework For Research And Action, Sarah Wakefield, Jamie Baxter

Geography & Environment Publications

This article draws together three issues—the environment, health, and (in)justice—with the overall purpose of articulating an agenda for policy and research that works towards improved justice and sustainability in the environmental health arena. Considerable research in the United States and elsewhere has shown that both environmental exposures and poor health are more prevalent in populations that are marginalized by race and social class (typically measured as income). The logical next step has been to attempt to establish concrete cause-effect links between health effects and environmental exposures in order to mobilize government action to reduce these disparities. However, we caution against …

Reaching For Environmental Health Justice: Canadian Experiences For A Comprehensive Research, Policy And Advocacy Agenda In Health Promotion, Jeffrey R. Masuda, Blake Poland, Jamie Baxter Jan 2010

Reaching For Environmental Health Justice: Canadian Experiences For A Comprehensive Research, Policy And Advocacy Agenda In Health Promotion, Jeffrey R. Masuda, Blake Poland, Jamie Baxter

Geography & Environment Publications

Spatial disparities in environmental quality and practices are contributing to rising health inequalities worldwide. To date, the field of health promotion has not contributed as significantly as it might to a systematic analysis of the physical environment as a determinant of health nor to a critique of inequitable environmental governance practices responsible for social injustice-particularly in the Canadian context. In this paper, we explore ways in which health promotion and environmental justice perspectives can be combined into an integrated movement for environmental health justice in health promotion. Drawing on Canadian experiences, we describe the historical contributions and limitations of each …

Residential Segregation In The Industrializing City: A Closer Look, Jason A. Gilliland, Sherry H. Olsen Jan 2010

Residential Segregation In The Industrializing City: A Closer Look, Jason A. Gilliland, Sherry H. Olsen

Geography & Environment Publications

This article maps and measures several dimensions of residential segregation in Montreal in 1881, thereby adding to our understanding of the social structure of the industrial city. Taking advantage of an unusual historical database—a historical geographic information system (H-GIS)—we locate 17,000 individual households with precision, and evaluate the "dissimilarity" of neighborhoods along several social dimensions and at various levels of spatial aggregation. The empirical findings suggest that Montreal was highly segregated along lines of ethnic identity as well as socioeconomic status; segregation values increased inversely with size of the spatial unit, but precision of unit boundaries have negligible effect. Coupling …

Locating Xenophobia: Debate, Discourse, And Everyday Experience In Cape Town, South Africa, Belinda Dodson Jan 2010

Locating Xenophobia: Debate, Discourse, And Everyday Experience In Cape Town, South Africa, Belinda Dodson

Geography & Environment Publications

In May 2008, South Africa experienced an outbreak of violence

against foreign Africans living in the country. Political

leaders expressed shock and surprise, but there has in reality

been long-standing and well-documented hostility toward

African immigrants in South Africa. Several competing explanations

have been put forward, with debate gaining urgency

and polarization since the xenophobic attacks of 2008. After

a selective review of the relevant literature to sketch the

contours of that debate, this paper presents findings from

research conducted with African immigrants living in Cape

Town. Their experiences provide further evidence that antiimmigrant

attitudes and behaviors on the part …

A Quantitative Analysis Of The Urban Morphology Of Southwestern Ontario Census Metropolitan Areas, David Alan Stubbs Jan 2010

A Quantitative Analysis Of The Urban Morphology Of Southwestern Ontario Census Metropolitan Areas, David Alan Stubbs

Digitized Theses

Patterns of urban development in North America have changed drastically over time: from dense urban cores to sprawling subdivisions. This study investigates changes in residential forms of Southwestern Ontario cities by characterizing numerous individual features which make up the built environment, and then evaluating spatial patterns and statistical relationships. Using high-quality data regarding the social and physical elements of Ontario cities within a geographic information system (GIS), this research provides improved methods to quantitatively characterize urban development forms at the micro level. Results show that the majority of morphological variables have systematic spatial patterns and are highly correlated. Most variables …

MDO is located in a prolific epithermal …

Object-Based Urban Tree Cover Extraction From High Spatial Resolution Optical And Lidar Imagery: Techniques And Data Integration, Brad Lehrbass Jan 2010

Object-Based Urban Tree Cover Extraction From High Spatial Resolution Optical And Lidar Imagery: Techniques And Data Integration, Brad Lehrbass

Digitized Theses

Tree canopy cover is a fundamental measure of the urban forest, which benefits a city socially and environmentally. In this thesis, methods are proposed to map urban tree cover. Chapter 2 presents an object-based tree cover extraction method using some new techniques for commonly available high-spatial-resolution colour-infrared imagery. The overall accuracy achieved for the 23 645 ha urban growth area of London, Ontario was 89.73%. This accuracy can be improved further by integrating LiDAR surface information. However, tall objects appear displaced in traditional orthoimages, causing misclassification. Chapter 3 presents a new method for correcting horizontal relief displacement of tall objects …

Source Area Variations In Urban Snow Cover And Its Impact On The Radiation Budget, Beth E. Nanni Jan 2010

Source Area Variations In Urban Snow Cover And Its Impact On The Radiation Budget, Beth E. Nanni

Digitized Theses

This thesis investigates urban surface snow cover dynamics to assess their impact on spatial variations of net radiation (Q*). High resolution aerial photographs from 5 days were used to study the spatial and temporal variation of snow cover. Impervious surfaces exhibit the greatest degree of spatial and temporal variation in snow cover, while building roofs and grass show least variation. Radiative and turbulent source areas were modeled for tower positions in urban and suburban study areas. LUMPS (Grimmond and Oke, 2002) was used to model Q* in those source areas. Radiative source area representativeness was better for the urban study …

Abandoned Spaces In Canadian Writing: Constructing “The Country Of Our Defeat”, Brooke Sarah Pratt Jan 2010

Abandoned Spaces In Canadian Writing: Constructing “The Country Of Our Defeat”, Brooke Sarah Pratt

Digitized Theses

This thesis examines representations of abandoned space in Canadian writing from the early nineteenth century to the contemporary period. Drawing from a diversity of existing scholarship in the fields of architectural and spatial theory, cultural geography, and national history, it addresses some of the most emblematic sites of architectural decay in Canada, from the ghost town, to the ruin, to the deserted farmstead, to the neglected urban core. One of the central concerns of the thesis is to show that literary portraits of vacant or decaying dwelling places, in whatever form they might take, signify a kind of angst on …

Struggles To Get Back To The Land: New Farmers And The Future Of Agriculture In Ontario, Alex Alkhoury Jan 2010

Struggles To Get Back To The Land: New Farmers And The Future Of Agriculture In Ontario, Alex Alkhoury

Digitized Theses

Given limits to fossil energy and the need to reduce agriculture’s atmospheric impact, there is a need to increasingly re-insert human labour for machines and inputs in agricultural landscapes like those in Ontario. At the same time, Ontario has a small, declining, and aging farming population, which implies that rebuilding its labour force means moving against forbidding trends, including having people from non-farm backgrounds seek agricultural livelihoods. This thesis explores the emerging 'seams' that mark this transition, analysing the interpretations and lived experiences of 36 participants from non-farm backgrounds in southwestern Ontario who were, in various ways, struggling to get …

Impact Of Revised And Potential Future Albedo Estimates On Ccsm3 Simulations Of Growing-Season Surface Temperature Fields For North America, Warren E. Heilman, David Y. Hollinger, Xiuping Li, Xindi Bian, Shiyuan Zhong Jan 2010

Impact Of Revised And Potential Future Albedo Estimates On Ccsm3 Simulations Of Growing-Season Surface Temperature Fields For North America, Warren E. Heilman, David Y. Hollinger, Xiuping Li, Xindi Bian, Shiyuan Zhong

United States Department of Agriculture, Forest Service / University of Nebraska-Lincoln: Faculty Publications

Recently published albedo research has resulted in improved growing-season albedo estimates for forest and grassland vegetation. The impact of these improved estimates on the ability of climate models to simulate growing-season surface temperature patterns is unknown. We have developed a set of current-climate surface temperature scenarios for North America using the Community Climate System Model – Version 3 (CCSM3). Simulation results suggest that modifications to the default CCSM3 radiative parameters that are consistent with more recent accurate measurements of albedo values for grasslands and needle-leaf deciduous trees (NDTs) can reduce the overall growing-season surface temperature bias over North America in …

Ngos In Microfinance: Learning From The Past, Accepting Limitations, And Moving Forward., Bipasha Baruah

Data and Test Instruments

Over the past three decades, microfinance has become an extremely popular and populist development intervention. The Grameen Bank and its founder, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, were awarded the 2006 Nobel Peace Prize and the Global Microcredit Summit in Halifax, Nova Scotia set itself the goal of lending to 175 million people around the world by 2015. Despite such global enthusiasm, the limitations of microfinance are gradually being acknowledged even by its most vociferous proponents. The vast majority of NGOs in microfinance not only face tremendous challenges in balancing outreach and financial sustainability, but there is also growing evidence of their failure …

Sandhill Cranes Of Coastal British Columbia: Results Of Helicopter Surveys And Preliminary Observations Of Habitat Use, Krista Roessingh, Briony Penn

Proceedings of the North American Crane Workshop

A pilot study on sandhill cranes (Grus canadensis) was conducted on the central coast of British Columbia in May 2006, followed by 2 summers of inventory and observation in 2007 and 2008. Fieldwork consisted of gathering local knowledge of crane locales, helicopter and boat surveys, and observations from blinds. We located 29 nest sites on 14 different islands and 1 mainland peninsula, as well as several beach foraging areas and bog roost sites. Observed average crane and nest density in areas of suitable habitat was 0.21/km2 and 0.044/km2, respectively, for 2007 and 2008. Nest and …
