Audible Identities: Passing And Sound Technologies, Pamela L. Caughie Jan 2010

Audible Identities: Passing And Sound Technologies, Pamela L. Caughie

English: Faculty Publications and Other Works

At the March 2008 conference of the Association for Recorded Sound Collections held at Stanford University, audio historians played what they claim is the first recording of the human voice. It is a presumably female voice singing Au clair de la lune, though the distorted quality of the 10-second recording renders the words no more decipherable than the singer’s gender to an untutored ear. The recording was made in Paris in April 1860 on a ‘phonautograph’ invented by Édouard-Léon Scott de Martinville (aka Leon Scott), nearly 20 years before Thomas Edison patented the phonograph in 1877. Sound waves captured …

Diversity Plans And Programs: Arl Spec Kit 319, Charlene Maxey-Harris, Toni Anaya

University of Nebraska-Lincoln Libraries: Faculty Publications

In 1990, ARL published SPEC Kit 165 Cultural Diversity Programming in ARL Libraries and SPEC Kit 167 Minority Recruitment and Retention in ARL Libraries. Both of these documents provided a wealth of information about library programs and services that addressed the needs of a diverse user group, minority staff recruitment and retention strategies, and approaches to managing an ethnically/culturally diverse workforce. While survey results in those SPEC Kits indicated that progress had been made since the 1960s, respondents indicated they thought there was much more to do to ensure that academic and research library staff are representative of all …

Southern Encounters In The City: Reconfiguring The South From The Liminal Space, Eveljn Ferraro Jan 2010

Southern Encounters In The City: Reconfiguring The South From The Liminal Space, Eveljn Ferraro

Modern Languages & Literature

In Il pensiero meridiano, sociologist Franco Cassano claims that the cultural autonomy of the South hinges upon a radical redefinition of the relationship between South and North. Dominant representations of the South as a “not-yet North”1 (Cassano viii), always imperfectly mimicking a more advanced North, found themselves on the idea of a linear transition from backwardness to development where the differences are often reduced to a matter of time. If Gramsci, in The Southern Question, deconstructed the Italian North/South binarism by suggesting potential alliances among non-dominant groups (namely, Northern workers and Southern peasants), Cassano proposes a spatial rethinking of the …

Territorial Bias In International Law: Attribution In State And Corporate Responsibility, Peter D. Szigeti Jan 2010

Territorial Bias In International Law: Attribution In State And Corporate Responsibility, Peter D. Szigeti

Florida State University Journal of Transnational Law & Policy

Territory is ordinarily the basis for and the limit to law-making and law-enforcement: this is the legal meaning of the so-called "Westphalian system. "But territory also serves as a fallback for the determination of responsibility, and entities lacking in territory (such as multinational corporations) have a decided advantage in evading responsibility. This paper investigates the role of territory in state and corporate responsibility by looking at attribution. Attribution is the first phase of determining responsibility, wherein we ask whether the illicit acts committed can be attributed to the organization (be it a state or a corporation) that we want to …

Resisting Negative Images And Stereotypes: One Latina Prospective Teacher’S Story, Terri L. Rodriguez Jan 2010

Resisting Negative Images And Stereotypes: One Latina Prospective Teacher’S Story, Terri L. Rodriguez

Education Faculty Publications

This article focuses on one Latina prospective teacher’s act of resisting negative stereotypes regarding attire imposed upon her by a white female principal. The event is embedded within a larger life history study that explores the experiences of bilingual Latino prospective teachers in the elementary education program of a large Midwestern university. The selected narrative is contextualized in relation to resistance narratives. Patricia Morales tells about her experiences in U.S. schools. It explores how Patricia’s life history is marked by experiences of discrimination, yet how her constructions of these events represent “counterstories” (Delgado, 2000; Solorzano & Yosso, 2002) through which …

Avian Foods, Foraging And Habitat Conservation In World Rice Fields, Richard M. Kaminski, Kenneth J. Reinecke, Joshua D. Stafford Jan 2010

Avian Foods, Foraging And Habitat Conservation In World Rice Fields, Richard M. Kaminski, Kenneth J. Reinecke, Joshua D. Stafford

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

Worldwide, rice (Oryza sativa) agriculture typically involves seasonal flooding and soil tillage, which provides a variety of microhabitats and potential food for birds. Water management in rice fields creates conditions ranging from saturated mud flats to shallow (<30 cm) water, thereby attracting different guilds of birds. Grain not collected during harvest (i.e. waste rice) is typically the most abundant potential food of birds in rice fields, with estimates of seed mass from North America ranging from 66-672 kg/ha. Although initially abundant after harvest, waste rice availability can be temporally limited. Few abundance estimates for other foods, such as vertebrate prey or forage vegetation, exist for rice fields. Outside North America, Europe and Japan, little is known about abundance and importance of any avian food in rice fields. Currently, flooding rice fields after harvest is the best known management practice to attract and benefit birds. Studies from North America indicate specific agricultural practices (e.g. burning stubble) may increase use and improve access to food resources. Evaluating and implementing management practices that are ecologically sustainable, increase food for birds and are agronomically beneficial should be global priorities to integrate rice production and avian conservation. Finally, land area devoted to rice agriculture appears to be stable in the USA, declining in China, and largely unquantified in many regions. Monitoring trends in riceland area may provide information to guide avian conservation planning in rice-agriculture ecosystems.

The Ugly Truth: Insurgencies Are Brutal, Robert J. Bunker Jan 2010

The Ugly Truth: Insurgencies Are Brutal, Robert J. Bunker

CGU Faculty Publications and Research

The intent of this short essay is to move past the hype, rhetoric, and passions of the moment and get to the core of the issue at hand. The ugly truth has nothing to do with who released the documents, why they were released, or even what political outcomes and potential policy fallout will occur after the dust settles. The core issue at hand is that insurgencies, by their very nature, are inherently brutal. This point was recently driven home after doing a considerable amount of research and reflection on issues pertaining to insurgent use of targeted killing, via both …

If You Build It They Will Come: Growth Of An Online Community For Intensive Care In Australia, K Rolls, D Kowal, Margaret M. Hansen Edd, Msn, Rn, D Elliott

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications

Rolls, K., Kowal, D., Hansen, M., Group learning and networking are integral to contemporary views of organisational and knowledge management, and learning. Current healthcare structures however create practice silos that promote professional isolation and limit the flow and uptake of knowledge. Computer mediated communication (CMC) technologies transcend time and geography, enabling clinicians to communicate and interact with a broad range of colleagues continuously. This contrasts with traditional approaches to networking that rely on limited personal contacts and/or professional events. In 2003 the NSW Intensive Care Coordination and Monitoring Unit established ‘ICUConnect’, a listserv to network intensive care (IC) clinicians. Initially …

Provenance Aware Linked Sensor Data, Harshal Kamlesh Patni, Satya S. Sahoo, Cory Andrew Henson, Amit P. Sheth

Kno.e.sis Publications

Provenance, from the French word “provenir”, describes the lineage or history of a data entity. Provenance is critical information in the sensors domain to identify a sensor and analyze the observation data over time and geographical space. In this paper, we present a framework to model and query the provenance information associated with the sensor data exposed as part of the Web of Data using the Linked Open Data conventions. This is accomplished by developing an ontology-driven provenance management infrastructure that includes a representation model and query infrastructure. This provenance infrastructure, called Sensor Provenance Management System (PMS), is …

The LOD cloud is gathering a lot of momentum, with the number of contributors growing manifold. Many prominent data providers have submitted and linked their data to other dataset with the help of manual mappings. The potential of the LOD cloud is enormous ranging from challenging AI issues such as open domain question answering to automated knowledge discovery. We believe that there is not enough technology support available to effectively query the LOD cloud. To this effect, we present a system called Linked Open Data SPARQL Querying System (LOQUS), which automatically maps users queries written in terms of a conceptual …

Theorizing Ambivalence In Ang Lee's Transnational Cinema: The Discourse Of Chinese Identity Between The Local And The Global, Chih-Yun Chiang Jan 2010

Theorizing Ambivalence In Ang Lee's Transnational Cinema: The Discourse Of Chinese Identity Between The Local And The Global, Chih-Yun Chiang

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Using ambivalence as a theoretical framework, this study examines Ang Lee's cinematic discourse of Chinese identity, which is co-constructed with the audiences from different cultural communities. I focus on Ang Lee's transnational films Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon and Lust, Caution as my two case studies. By analyzing the audience discourse from Taiwan, Mainland China, and overseas Chinese communities, I am able to conceptualize their reactions as communicative moments that co-construct the meaning of the film text. I suggest that ambivalence is a self-representational strategy for the ethnic "Other," who is historically denied access to representation, to contest and subvert the …

Creative Tension: The Call/Response Dialectic Of Martin And Malcolm, Leslie J. Reynard Jan 2010

Creative Tension: The Call/Response Dialectic Of Martin And Malcolm, Leslie J. Reynard

Iowa Journal of Communication

The rhetorical positions of Martin Luther King and Malcolm X are usually juxtaposed as polar opposites. However, their most famous speeches, I Have a Dream and The Ballot or the Bullet, are more meaningful read as a unified dialectic rather than as single orations. Their shared purpose through divergent means ultimately cooperated to benefit the Civil Rights Movement. The rhetors' personas are compared and contrasted, as is their interaction in the Civil Rights Movement. The essay then decodes the speeches within frames of Afrocentric rhetorical practices of signifyin' and call-response exchanges that camouflaged subversive meanings while forging stronger communal links.

Effects Of Drought On Avian Community Structure, Thomas P. Albright, Anna M. Pidgeon, Chadwick D. Rittenhouse, Murray K. Clayton, Curtis H. Flather, Patrick D. Culbert, Brian D. Wardlows, Volker C. Radeloff

National Drought Mitigation Center: Faculty Publications

Droughts are expected to become more frequent under global climate change. Avifauna depend on precipitation for hydration, cover, and food. While there are indications that avian communities respond negatively to drought, little is known about the response of birds with differing functional and behavioral traits, what time periods and indicators of drought are most relevant, or how response varies geographically at broad spatial scales. Our goals were thus to determine (1) how avian abundance and species richness are related to drought, (2) whether community variations are more related to vegetation vigor or precipitation deviations and at what time periods relationships …

Scampering In The City: Examining The Ecological And Social Viability Of Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs (Cynomys Ludovicianus) In Denver, Colorado, Lauren K. Morse

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The conservation of prairie dogs is highly contested due to the embedded view that they are pests. This research addressed the ecological and social viability of prairie dog colonies in Denver, Colorado. Remote sensing analysis was applied to identify potentially viable areas for urban prairie dog colonies. In order to assess the social viability of urban colonies, knowledge and attitudinal surveys were distributed to residents near existing colonies and residents near potential colonies. Statistical analysis of responses provided insight into relationships between proximity to colonies, ecological knowledge, attitudes towards prairie dogs, demographics, and the presence of educational literature. Results indicated …
