Utilizing Mentoring To Promote Leadership Growth And Development In A Corporate Environment, Laura K. Paris Jan 2010

Utilizing Mentoring To Promote Leadership Growth And Development In A Corporate Environment, Laura K. Paris

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The existing level of corporate leadership talent is inadequate to sustain successful business enterprises. Inexperienced leaders and managers have limited access to resources and opportunities to gain experience. Training programs are insufficient to promote the development of leadership skills. A mentoring program can address the gaps in leadership development in corporate environments. Relevant literature on mentoring was utilized to develop a recommendation on a mentoring program for leadership growth and development. A PowerPoint presentation was created to illustrate the recommended model.

The Dead Sea Scrolls And The World Of Jesus, Andrew C. Skinner Jan 2010

The Dead Sea Scrolls And The World Of Jesus, Andrew C. Skinner

Studies in the Bible and Antiquity

The Dead Sea Scrolls constitute a seminal resource for understanding the context of the early Christian community and several New Testament texts. Soon after their discovery, some very sensational claims were made about the Qumran community and its literature (the scrolls) in terms of their connection to Jesus and his followers. While these have largely been dismissed, and serious and persistent scholarship over the years has shown that there were differences between the Qumran community and early Christianity, significant similarities do exist. These similarities line up largely according to the following categories: common scripture and its interpretation, theological ideas, vocabulary …

Gis-Based Estimation Of Marginal Implicit Prices Of Housing Amenities: The Case Of High Ground And Stagnant Streams, Arthur J. Caplan Jan 2010

Gis-Based Estimation Of Marginal Implicit Prices Of Housing Amenities: The Case Of High Ground And Stagnant Streams, Arthur J. Caplan

Applied Economics Faculty Publications

We use GIS and econometric methods to estimate the marginal implicit values of environmental amenities associated with residential land parcels in the mountain town of Logan, Utah. Amenities include proximity to open spaces (such as parks, golf courses and lakes), commercial zones, major roads, streams, and general visibility of surrounding topography in the valley as determined by the elevation of the land parcel. The amenity value estimates are corrected for spatial autocorrelation. We find spatially dependent relationships between (1) a parcel’s value and its elevation, and (2) a parcel’s value and its adjacency to a stagnant stream. To our knowledge, …

An Ontology-Based Assistant For Analyzing Agents' Activities, Roland Johnson Jan 2010

An Ontology-Based Assistant For Analyzing Agents' Activities, Roland Johnson

Theses

This thesis reports on work in progress on software that helps an analyst identify and analyze activities of actors (such as vehicles) in an intelligence-relevant scenario. A system is being developed to aid intelligence analysts, IAGOA ((Intelligence Analyst’s Geospatial and Ontological Assistant). Analysis may be accomplished by retrieving simulated satellite data of ground vehicles and interacting with software modules that allow the analyst to conjecture the activities in which the actor is engaged along with the (largely geospatial and temporal) features of the area of operation relevant to the natures of those activities. Activities are conceptualized by ontologies. The research …

Care-Givers, Leisure And The Meaning Of Home: A Case Study Of Low Income Women In Dublin, Bernadette Quinn Jan 2010

Care-Givers, Leisure And The Meaning Of Home: A Case Study Of Low Income Women In Dublin, Bernadette Quinn

Articles

This article seeks to contribute to the literature on the meanings of domestic spaces by furthering understandings of the sorts of roles that space plays in shaping women’s leisure experiences. The study researched a group of 15 women who live in disadvantaged areas of Dublin city and care for dependent children. Focus groups and structured conversations revealed the poverty of the spatial capital available to these women, depicting local environments as difficult and stressful, and to be endured rather than enjoyed. They further revealed the extent to which the women’s lives were shaped by their obligations as care-givers. Within the …

Impacts of Weather Variability on Rice and Aquaculture Production in the Mekong Delta

Although farmers in Vietnam’s Mekong Delta adapt to current weather variabilities, they may be unequipped to deal with future changes in global climate, Nguyen Hieu Trung said. He presented results from a study investigating the impacts of weather variability on rice and aquaculture production.

To cope with seasonal flooding as well as limited water and salinity intrusion during the dry season, Vietnam developed a rice irrigation system using canals and sluice gates. Cropping calendars and diversification also were introduced.

Today, in dry fields, farmers cultivate rice and …

Foreword

Today 75 to 80 percent of human water consumption is used to grow food. The projected doubling in food demand, coupled with the impact of climate change on the geographic availability of water, will significantly increase the demand for water and the potential for a water crisis.

As native Nebraskans, we know very well the linkage between water and food. We grew up in an agricultural state, in an environment with an abundance of good soil, enough rainfall and water for irrigation, and the constant expansion of agriculture through innovation. As the threat of global poverty and food …

Exploring The Impact Of A Cd Rom On Arabic Language Learners' Acquisition Of The Arabic Language And Culture, Abdelhak Bouhaja

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The purpose of this study and thesis was to determine the impact of using a CD including authentic Arabic material to improve Arabic language learners' reading and listening proficiency, as well as to increase their familiarity with Arabic culture. The CD contained several components including film clips, songs, and short stories reflecting various aspects of Arabic culture and history. An open-ended questionnaire and an interview were administered to elicit students' perceptions of the CD's usefulness or lack thereof in improving their Arabic proficiency. Although students reported an interest in learning the Arabic language using the CD ROM, they seemed to …

Black Elk Speaks Says So : Elders On Telling About Traditional Tribes, James A. Starkewolf Jan 2010

Black Elk Speaks Says So : Elders On Telling About Traditional Tribes, James A. Starkewolf

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

In this action research thesis, Indian elders give suggestions on storytelling curriculum about traditional tribes. To see where we are going, we must know where we have been, who we come from, what we do and should do, and how to sense the hand of the Trickster. Human beings are rooted in traditional tribes, ancient future societies such as those we are documenting. Indian Country is a world apart, under siege and, as renowned activist Leonard Peltier has said, prison is the fastest growing reservation. Educational standards require children know of broken treaties, massacres, and internecine warfare, but not that …

Rural Community Longevity: Capitalizing On Diversity For Immigrant Residential Stability, Rochelle L. Dalla, Tammy R. Stuhmer, Jennifer G. Deleón, Maria Isabel León Carreño Jan 2010

Rural Community Longevity: Capitalizing On Diversity For Immigrant Residential Stability, Rochelle L. Dalla, Tammy R. Stuhmer, Jennifer G. Deleón, Maria Isabel León Carreño

Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications

The premise of this research is that rural immigrants comprise a significant source of untapped human and social capital necessary for community development. However, to capitalize on the growing ethnic diversity in rural America, immigrant newcomers must want to stay in their new rural communities. This investigation was designed to identify factors necessary to enhance rural Latino immigrants’ long-term residential stability. Thus, we sought to: (1) identify perceptions of rural residence, with particular attention to employment opportunities and challenges; (2) assess formal support availability and community issues of greatest concern to rural Latinas; and (3) identify strategies for creating bi-cultural …

Can Weak Substitution Be Rehabilitated?, V. Kerry Smith, Mary F. Evans, H. Spencer Banzhaf, Christine Poulos

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

This paper develops a graphical analysis and an analytical model that demonstrate how weak substitution can be used for non-market valuation. Weak complementarity and weak substitution represent preference restrictions that allow us to develop equivalent price changes to describe quantity or quality changes in non-market goods. The price changes are Hicksian equivalents in that they yield the same utility changes as would the quantity or quality changes. After discussion of several potential applications of weak substitution, the paper develops the parallel between the restriction and recent strategies from modeling differentiated goods.

Fighting The Forces Of Gravity – Seapower And Maritime Trade Between The 18th And 20th Centuries, Ahmed S. Rahman Jan 2010

Fighting The Forces Of Gravity – Seapower And Maritime Trade Between The 18th And 20th Centuries, Ahmed S. Rahman

United States Navy: Publications

How have large naval powers affected international commerce in history? Using a panel gravity model, we investigate the interactions of wars, alliances, naval power and trade from the 18th to mid-20th centuries. Striking an alliance with a naval power helps a country’s interstate commerce. Fighting a naval power on the other hand limits a country’s interstate commerce. Further, we split this effect on trade between an extensive effect (effect on a country’s trade when fighting a naval power) and an intensive effect (effect of that power gaining more naval strength). We conclude that the intensive effect is a powerful one …

A Geographical Information System-Based Analysis Of Cancer Mortality And Population Exposure To Coal Mining Activities In West Virginia, United States Of America, Michael Hendryx, Evan Fedorko, Andrew Anesetti-Rothermel Jan 2010

A Geographical Information System-Based Analysis Of Cancer Mortality And Population Exposure To Coal Mining Activities In West Virginia, United States Of America, Michael Hendryx, Evan Fedorko, Andrew Anesetti-Rothermel

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Cancer incidence and mortality rates are high in West Virginia compared to the rest of the United States of America. Previous research has suggested that exposure to activities of the coal mining industry may contribute to elevated cancer mortality, although exposure measures have been limited. This study tests alternative specifications of exposure to mining activity to determine whether a measure based on location of mines, processing plants, coal slurry impoundments and underground slurry injection sites relative to population levels is superior to a previously-reported measure of exposure based on tons mined at the county level, in the prediction of age-adjusted …

Family Change And Poverty In Appalachia, Daniel Lichter, Lisa Cimbulak Jan 2010

Family Change And Poverty In Appalachia, Daniel Lichter, Lisa Cimbulak

University of Kentucky Center for Poverty Research Discussion Paper Series

The current economic and political climate provides a vivid contrast with the circumstances of the 1990s, when the passage of the 1996 Personal Responsibility and Work Opportunity Reconciliation Act (PRWORA) ushered in welfare reform during a period of unprecedented economic expansion and job growth (Blank 2002; Ziliak 2009). This legislation sought to “end the dependence of needy parents on government benefits by promoting job preparation, work, and marriage.” Among PRWORA’s goals were to reduce out-of-wedlock births and encourage the formation of two-parent families. For most states, much of the initial emphasis on self-sufficiency was placed on “work first” programs (i.e., …

Does Self Management In Fisheries Enhance Profitability? Examination Of Korea’S Coastal Fisheries, Hirotsugu Uchida, Emi Uchida, Jung-Sam Lee, Jeong-Gon Ryu, Dae-Young Kim

Environmental and Natural Resource Economics Faculty Publications

Self management of natural resources has started to gain increasing attention as an alternative tool to command-and-control and market-based tools, but the fundamental question remains: is self management economically beneficial such that it should be promoted in the first place? This article uses a unique set of survey data from South Korea and applies an empirical strategy to provide some of the first quantitative evidence that self management is benefiting the fishermen. We find that positive benefits of fishery self management—an increase in fishery revenue and reduction in cost—are perceived by member fishermen, which is a good start considering the …
