Anonymous Pseudo-Autobiographies: Passing The New Southern Studies In The Southerner And The Autobiography Of An Ex-Colored Man, Matthew S. Dinger Nov 2010

Anonymous Pseudo-Autobiographies: Passing The New Southern Studies In The Southerner And The Autobiography Of An Ex-Colored Man, Matthew S. Dinger

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis seeks to understand the South as a space through which the contested bodies of two literary characters and the men who authored them can be more fully explored: the Ex- Colored Man in James Weldon Johnson's The Autobiography of an Ex-Colored Man and Nicholas Worth in Walter Hines Page's The Southerner; each appearing within an early twentieth-century novel masquerading as an autobiography. These bodies serve to help us understand how the regional Other of the South has inflicted itself on individuals living in the South and caused an irreparable fracture to the characters' identities forcing them into …

The Piracy And Terrorism Nexus: Real Or Imagined?, Karine Hamilton Nov 2010

The Piracy And Terrorism Nexus: Real Or Imagined?, Karine Hamilton

Australian Counter Terrorism Conference

The waters off the coast of Somalia and in the Gulf of Aden have been the location of a dramatic proliferation of pirate activities in recent years. Security officials around the world are concerned about the risks posed by Somali piracy to maritime shipping and to national security. These risks relate to the susceptibility of world trade shipments to terrorist attack and to the emergence of an increasingly powerful Islamist movement in Somalia with connections to global terrorist networks. Whilst Somali piracy has been the topic of growing media speculation, reliable information about the phenomenon is scant. This paper reports …

Humphry Davy: Science, Authorship, And The Changing Romantic, Marianne Lind Baker Nov 2010

Humphry Davy: Science, Authorship, And The Changing Romantic, Marianne Lind Baker

Theses and Dissertations

In the mid to late 1700s, men of letters became more and more interested in the natural world. From studies in astronomy to biology, chemistry, and medicine, these "philosophers" pioneered what would become our current scientific categories. While the significance of their contributions to these fields has been widely appreciated historically, the interconnection between these men and their literary counterparts has not. A study of the "Romantic man of science" reveals how much that figure has in common with the traditional "Romantic" literary figure embodied by poets like William Wordsworth and Samuel Taylor Coleridge. This thesis interrogates connections between Romantic …

Mothers Against Democracy: Hebe De Bonafini's Rhetorical Strategies Of Resistance, 1988-2003, Shirley J. Oakley Nov 2010

Mothers Against Democracy: Hebe De Bonafini's Rhetorical Strategies Of Resistance, 1988-2003, Shirley J. Oakley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The Madres de Plaza de Mayo was once a small group of grieving mothers in Buenos Aires who sought solace during a dictatorship that began in 1976. As their resistance developed, they grew into a social and political organization whose purpose is to keep the memory of their children alive and to generate justice in Argentina and worldwide. Their leader, Hebe de Bonafini, is atypical because there was no oratorical tradition for her to follow: she created one. Throughout the thirty-four years of the mothers' movement's existence, Bonafini's rhetoric has changed and has taken a new shape. The permanent disappearance …

Chronology Of The Grotte Du Renne (France) And Implications For The Context Of Ornaments And Human Remains Within The Châtelperronian, Thomas Higham, Roger Jacobi, Michèle Julien Nov 2010

Chronology Of The Grotte Du Renne (France) And Implications For The Context Of Ornaments And Human Remains Within The Châtelperronian, Thomas Higham, Roger Jacobi, Michèle Julien

KIP Articles

There is extensive debate concerning the cognitive and behavioral adaptation of Neanderthals, especially in the period when the earliest anatomically modern humans dispersed into Western Europe, around 35,000–40,000 B.P. The site of the Grotte du Renne (at Arcy-sur-Cure) is of great importance because it provides the most persuasive evidence for behavioral complexity among Neanderthals. A range of ornaments and tools usually associated with modern human industries, such as the Aurignacian, were excavated from three of the Châtelperronian levels at the site, along with Neanderthal fossil remains (mainly teeth). This extremely rare occurrence has been taken to suggest that Neanderthals were …

Sovereign Wealth Funds: Form And Function In The 21st Century, Gordon L. Clark, Ashby H. B. Monk Nov 2010

Sovereign Wealth Funds: Form And Function In The 21st Century, Gordon L. Clark, Ashby H. B. Monk

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

As representatives of nation-states in global financial markets, sovereign wealth funds (SWFs) share a common form and many functions. Arguably their form and functions owe as much to a shared (global) moment of institutional formation as they owe their form and functions to the hegemony of Anglo-American finance over the late 20th and early 21st centuries. We distinguish between the immediate future for SWFs in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, and two possible long-term scenarios; one of which sees SWFs becoming financial goliaths dominating global markets, while the other sees SWFs morphing into nation-state development institutions that intermediate …

Understanding The Economics Of Transportation In Utah, Jeremy E. Searle
