Peer Reviewed Publications From Class Projects, Carolyn A. Copenheaver

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

From 2001 to 2008, I coordinated the publication of 13 peer‐reviewed manuscripts stemming from group projects in a graduate‐level Advanced Forest Ecology class. The intention of the group projects was to immerse the students in actual forest ecology research and increase their professional development by personally involving them in the publication process. The student publications appeared in 11 different journals (American Midland Naturalist, Castanea, Dendrochronologia, Forest Ecology and Management, Journal of Natural Resources and Life Sciences Education, Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society, Natural Areas Journal, Northeastern Naturalist, Southeastern Geographer, and Tree‐Ring Research) and each group project had a unique …

Challenges To Professional Accreditation Of Forestry Degree Programs With Low Enrollments: The Utah State University Experience, Terry L. Sharik, Dustin H. Ranglack

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

As a result of its setting in the semi‐arid Intermountain West where forests are confined largely to montane environments, Utah State University (USU) has historically had relatively low undergraduate enrollments in forestry compared to other natural resource disciplines and compared to other institutions in the U.S. also offering a broad range of natural resource degrees. As a result of this history, coupled to the national trend over the past two decades of proportionally lower enrollments in forestry compared to other natural resource disciplines, undergraduate enrollment in forestry at USU currently constitutes less than 4% of total enrollments in natural resources. …

Undergraduate Enrollment Trends In Natural Resources At Naufrp Institutions: An Update, Terry L. Sharik, Robert J. Lilieholm Mar 2010

Undergraduate Enrollment Trends In Natural Resources At Naufrp Institutions: An Update, Terry L. Sharik, Robert J. Lilieholm

Conference on University Education in Natural Resources

Undergraduate enrollments in natural resources were analyzed for 30 NAUFRP institutions from around the country, covering the period 1980-2009. Results indicate that the steady downturn in enrollments beginning in the mid 1990s reversed itself in 2003 and continued to increase steadily through the present. Enrollments in the general category of Natural Resources and Environment recently eclipsed those in other more traditional fields of study such as forestry and wildlife and fisheries. Forestry enrollments, which in 1980 constituted nearly half of the total enrollments in all natural resource fields, currently make up less than only about one-fifth of these enrollments. These …

A Balloon Sounding Technique For Measuring So2 Plumes, Gary A. Morris, Walter D. Komhyr, Jun Hirokawa, James Flynn, Barry Lefer, Nicholay Krotokov, Fong Ngan

Physics and Astronomy Faculty Publications

This paper reports on the development of a new technique for inexpensive measurements of SO2 profiles using a modified dual-ozonesonde instrument payload. The presence of SO2 interferes with the standard electrochemical cell (ECC) ozonesonde measurement, resulting in –1 molecule of O3 reported for each molecule of SO2 present (provided [O3].[SO2]). In laboratory tests, an SO2 filter made with CrO3 placed on the inlet side of the sonde removes nearly 100% of the SO2 present for concentrations up to 60 ppbv and remained effective after exposure to 2.8 3 1016 molecules of SO2 [equivalent to a column ;150 DU (1 DU …

The Challenge Of Serving A Diverse Church: Being Christ For Others, Gregory J. Boyle Mar 2010

The Challenge Of Serving A Diverse Church: Being Christ For Others, Gregory J. Boyle

Journal of Catholic Education

Rev. Gregory Boyle, S.J., was ordained a priest in 1984 and shortly afterward became the pastor of Dolores Mission parish, serving from 1986-1992. While at Dolores Mission, he developed numerous programs for at-risk youth in the community. In 2001 his various projects assisting youths in gangs were united under one banner: Homeboy Industries. Through Homeboy, Fr. Greg has provided job training and work experience, mental health counseling, tattoo removal, and education, including Opportunities for Learning Charter High School, all in an environment where once-rival gang members are able to work side by side. In his talk to the Catholic Higher …

Spatial Development, Klaus Desmet, Esteban Rossi-Hansberg Mar 2010

Spatial Development, Klaus Desmet, Esteban Rossi-Hansberg

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

We present a theory of spatial development. A continuum of locations in a geographic area choose each period how much to innovate (if at all) in manufacturing and services. Locations can trade subject to transport costs and technology diffuses spatially across locations. The result is an endogenous growth theory that can shed light on the link between the evolution of economic activity over time and space. We apply the model to study the evolution of the U.S. economy in the last few decades and find that the model can generate the reduction in the employment share in manufacturing, the increase …

A Participatory Approach To Assess The Effectiveness Of Responses To Cope With Flood Risk, Lucia Ceccato, Valentina Giannini, Carlo Giupponi Mar 2010

A Participatory Approach To Assess The Effectiveness Of Responses To Cope With Flood Risk, Lucia Ceccato, Valentina Giannini, Carlo Giupponi

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

This work illustrates the preliminary findings of a participatory research process aimed at identifying responses for sustainable water management in a climate change perspective, in two river basins in Europe and Asia. The paper describes the methodology implemented through local workshops, aimed at eliciting and evaluating possible responses to flood risk. Participatory workshops allowed for the identification of four categories of possible responses and a set of nine evaluation criteria, three for each of the three pillars of sustainable development. The main outcome of such activities consists in the ranking of broad response categories instrumental to the objective of the …

Returns To Migration, Education, And Externalities In The European Union, Andrés Rodriguez-Pose, Vassilis Tselios Mar 2010

Returns To Migration, Education, And Externalities In The European Union, Andrés Rodriguez-Pose, Vassilis Tselios

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Relatively little attention has been paid to the role that externalities play in determining the pecuniary returns to migration. This paper addresses this gap, using microeconomic data for more than 100,000 individuals living in the European Union (EU) for the period 1994-2001 in order to analyse whether the individual economic returns to education vary between migrants and nonmigrants and whether any observed differences in earnings between migrants and locals are affected by household and/or geographical (regional and interregional) externalities. The results point out that while education is a fundamental determinant of earnings., European labour markets – contrary to expectations – …

Gasoline: The Achilles' Heel Of U. S. Energy Security, Robert W. Weaver Mar 2010

Gasoline: The Achilles' Heel Of U. S. Energy Security, Robert W. Weaver

United States Department of Energy: Publications

The United States must balance securing our energy future with protecting our environment from climate change. A holistic approach is required to solve this complex problem. We must reduce demand for petroleum, improve energy efficiency, and develop feasible alternative energy solutions to include emission capture technologies.

The United States remains the largest consumer of energy products in the world and is the second leading producer of green house gas (GHG) emissions. Our dependence on imported petroleum is undermining our control of our national security interests. Petroleum comprises 63% of the United States’ energy consumption, with the transportation sector accounting for …

Vindictive Virgins: Animate Images And Theories Of Art In Some Thirteenth-Century Miracle Stories, Alexa Sand

Art and Design Faculty Publications

It has been persuasively argued that before the fifteenth century the category of art as a theorized entity did not exist; this was a period for which we can write a history of the image, but not a history of art. Notably, Hans Belting, Likeness and Presence: A History of the Image before the Era of Art, trans. Edmund Jephcott (Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1996).View all notesCareful scrutiny of both intellectual and popular discourse on images, east and west, has resulted in the more cautious view that medieval people, while experiencing what we now call …

Leadership Competencies For College Leaders Of Public Small, Rural, Single-Campus And Large, Urban, Multiple-Campus Colleges, Joseph M. J Kools Mar 2010

Leadership Competencies For College Leaders Of Public Small, Rural, Single-Campus And Large, Urban, Multiple-Campus Colleges, Joseph M. J Kools

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This research examined how two decidedly different groups of community college presidents from across the United States viewed the competencies, characteristics, and professional skills identified by the American Association of Community Colleges (AACC) (2005) as important for effective community college leadership. The two groups participating in the research were from small, single-campus colleges serving rural populations and from large, multiple-campus colleges serving urban populations. The participants were asked to identify those activities and experiences that they found helpful in developing the AACC leadership competencies. The results from this research suggest that community college presidents from both sizes of college campuses …
