A Phenomenological Exploration Of School Counselors' Conceptualization And Implementation Of Multicultural Competence, Jasmine Knight
A Phenomenological Exploration Of School Counselors' Conceptualization And Implementation Of Multicultural Competence, Jasmine Knight
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
School counselors need multicultural competence to implement comprehensive school counseling programs that promote the academic achievement of all students. Prior research demonstrates that school counselors have reported high levels of multicultural competence. However, there is no evidence that this self-perceived competence translates into practice. The purpose of this phenomenological study was to explore the lived experiences of how practicing professional school counselors conceptualize multicultural competence and how they implement it into their work. To explore this topic, 12 practicing school counselors from a southeastern, urban school district participated in individual interviews, focus groups, and documents reviews. A research team analyzed …

Energy Crises And Cooperation: Do International Institutions Matter?, Vessela P. Chakarova
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
The risk of an oil supply disruption still exists. Oil reserves are increasingly concentrated in a handful of unreliable regimes, plagued by piracy and terrorism. Natural disasters and chokepoint incidents have increased in frequency. In addition, oil is expected to remain a significant part of the energy mix up until 2030. By that time Europe will be importing 90% of its oil. Thus, oil supply security will become an increasingly important feature of European politics.
One way to counter the noxious consequences of an oil disruption is to cooperate. International cooperation is a critical factor in any type of crisis, …

The Construction Of Liberal Democracy: The Role Of Civil-Military Institutions In State And Nation-Building In West Germany And South Africa, Jack J. Porter Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Recent experiences in Iraq and Afghanistan remind U.S. policymakers of the tremendous obstacles and challenges that confront states as they attempt to install liberal, democratic political institutions. The multifaceted transition process involves a host of overlapping and interrelated political, economic, and social innovations that often must be tailored to the specific historical, demographic, and regional needs of each community. While it would be presumptuous to suggest any rigid schedule or set of priorities, most scholars and policymakers agree that restructuring the security and civil-military institutions is vital to the transition. The primary focus of this analysis is a detailed examination …
Crime, Violence, And The Crisis In Guatemala: A Case Study In The Erosion Of The State, Hal Brands Dr.
Crime, Violence, And The Crisis In Guatemala: A Case Study In The Erosion Of The State, Hal Brands Dr.
Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies
Guatemala is currently experiencing a full-blown crisis of the democratic state. An unholy trinity of criminal elements—international drug traffickers, domestically based organized crime syndicates, and youth gangs—is effectively waging a form of irregular warfare against government institutions, with devastating consequences. The police, the judiciary, and entire local and departmental governments are rife with criminal infiltrators; murder statistics have surpassed civil-war levels in recent years; criminal operatives brazenly assassinate government officials and troublesome members of the political class; and broad swaths of territory are now effectively under the control of criminal groups. Guatemala’s weak institutions have been unable to contain this …
Subsidiarity And Global Poverty: Development From Below Upwards, Scott P. Kelley Ph.D.
Subsidiarity And Global Poverty: Development From Below Upwards, Scott P. Kelley Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
Scott Kelley raises the question of what a Catholic, Vincentian perspective brings to poverty studies that is unique. He answers it by exploring the debate between the developmental economists Jeffrey Sachs and William Easterly, examining the principle of subsidiarity in Catholic social teaching, and describing Frederic Ozanam’s approach to poverty alleviation. Contemporary solutions for poverty reduction are also discussed. The Sachs-Easterly debate is about whether wealthy nations should end world poverty through aid efforts to foreign governments (as Sachs contends), or whether better results come from working toward smaller goals with poor persons themselves (which is Easterly’s perspective). Easterly points …

Undergraduate Program In Eastern Africa For Adults Serving The Poor, Susanne M. Dumbleton Ph.D.
Vincentian Studies
Susanne Dumbleton explains what Vincentian universities in general can do to accomplish poverty reduction. Graduates should be prepared for careers that would enable them to influence government and the private sector to adopt the best solutions for poverty reduction. Students already in leadership positions should be empowered with skills and knowledge to increase their projects’ success. Poor persons’ access to education should be increased. Research should be conducted on poverty and poverty reduction. Dumbleton’s specific focus is on the undergraduate program at Tangaza College in Nairobi and its partnership with DePaul University. At the time she was writing, the program …

Changing Depositional Environments In An Upper Ordovician Stratigraphic Sequence, Ashlock Formation, Madison County, Kentucky, Kevin G. Greff, Walter S. Borowski
EKU Faculty and Staff Scholarship
We investigate the sedimentology, stratigraphy, and depositional environments of a 7-meter, Upper Ordovician limestone sequence cropping out in Richmond, Madison County, Kentucky. The stratigraphic section lies within the Ashlock Formation with good lateral exposure stretching along 200 meters of a highway roadcut. We took approximately 20 samples from the measured section, focusing on representative samples and lithologic transitions. We use standard laboratory procedures in slabbing rock samples and making thin sections.
The Ashlock Formation here consists of alternating layers of limey mudstone and limestone (field units A through F). Megafossils - brachiopods, bryozoans, trilobites, gastropods, ostracodes, coralline algae, and bivalves …

Corporate Governance In The Courtroom: An Empirical Analysis, Jessica Erickson
Corporate Governance In The Courtroom: An Empirical Analysis, Jessica Erickson
William & Mary Law Review
Conventional wisdom is that shareholder derivative suits are dead. Yet this death knell is decidedly premature. The current conception of shareholder derivative suits is based on an empirical record limited to suits filed in Delaware or on behalf of Delaware corporations, leaving suits outside this sphere in the shadows of corporate law scholarship. This Article aims to fill this gap by presenting the first empirical examination of shareholder derivative suits in the federal courts. Using an original, hand-collected data set, my study reveals that shareholder derivative suits are far from dead. Shareholders file more shareholder derivative suits than securities class …
Mere Mormonism, Thomas B. Griffith
Mere Mormonism, Thomas B. Griffith
BYU Studies
Devotees of C. S. Lewis will recognize that I have adapted the title of my remarks from Mere Christianity, his classic exposition of the fundamentals of the Christian faith. An hour lecture is not the forum to attempt for Latter-day Saint Christianity what Lewis achieved for traditional Christianity. In any event, I lack the skill to pull that off. What follows is something much more modest. I will speak from my own observation and try to identify what is at the heart of the Mormon experience in an attempt to provide an introduction to the faith. A disclaimer is …

Exile And Montage: Josep Renaus Reckoning With Community And Self, Claire-Lise Bénaud, Suzanne M. Schadl
Exile And Montage: Josep Renaus Reckoning With Community And Self, Claire-Lise Bénaud, Suzanne M. Schadl
University Libraries & Learning Sciences Faculty and Staff Publications
This paper examines Spanish photomontagist, Josep Renaus artistic progression through two exiles (the first in Mexico and the second in East Germany) as an example in which an individual defines his cultural identity first in the context of community, a collective leftist-socialist identity, and then as Stuart Hall points out in terms of 'difference.' When history reveals to Renau his separation from the community, he has no choice but to find himself in an expression of difference — not from the home he makes for himself in Mexico so much as from the neighbor he must criticize in order to …

What Ties Me To Blue Mountains, Deborah Lynne Downs
What Ties Me To Blue Mountains, Deborah Lynne Downs
English Theses & Dissertations
This thesis includes a collection of poems and a foreword discussing individual poems, the relationship of the poems as a collection, important themes, and concerns of craft. These poems comprise a narrative of place developed chronologically and are grounded in the context of regional storytelling and oral histories specific to Southwestern Virginia during roughly the first two thirds of the Twentieth Century.
History Has My Name examines culture, language, and geography—those things particular of place. In a larger social and cultural context this manuscript also focuses on the position of women and issues of racism within its stated time frame. …
The Dark Places Of Psychology: Consciousness In Virginia Woolf's Major Novels, Linda Martin
The Dark Places Of Psychology: Consciousness In Virginia Woolf's Major Novels, Linda Martin
Honors Projects
In a 1919 essay, Virginia Woolf wrote that “[f]or the moderns ‘that,’ the point of interest, lies very likely in the dark places of psychology.” For Woolf, this assertion represented a career-long interest in the mind and consciousness; she made a project of describing and explaining the mystery of subjective experience in her fiction. In my paper, I argue that specific, turn-of-the-century psychologists’ and scholars’ theories of consciousness influenced and inspired Woolf to integrate their ideas into her fiction. Further, through an in-depth exploration of Woolf’s middle fiction (Jacob’s Room, Mrs. Dalloway, To the Lighthouse, and The Waves), I demonstrate …
Impact Of Globalization On Socio-Economic And Political Development Of The Central Asian Countries, Karina Orozalieva
Impact Of Globalization On Socio-Economic And Political Development Of The Central Asian Countries, Karina Orozalieva
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The main objective of this thesis is to understand the economic, social and political impacts of globalization on the Kyrgyzstan, Kazakhstan and Central Asian countries in general. The empirical studies based on panel data analyses and the case study on Kyrgyzstan demonstrate that the socio-economic effect of globalization on development of these countries is twofold. On the one hand benefits produced by globalization such as migration and remittances can be useful for economic development in the short run. They take a role of a "shock absorber" of the challenges that are associated with transition to a free market economy. On …
State Stability In Post-Soviet Central Asia, Erica Podrazik
State Stability In Post-Soviet Central Asia, Erica Podrazik
Res Publica - Journal of Undergraduate Research
The concept of state failure in the modern world is a comparatively new notion, which did not emerge until former colonial possessions in Africa and Asia, once fledgling states, seemed to be in decline. As governments collapsed and states fractured into civil war, the developed world looked on. Nearly twenty years after the fall of the USSR and the rise of state failure, scholars’ understanding of the causes of state weakness and state failure remains incomplete, and the policy literature’s orientation toward economic causes of weakness is more descriptive of weakness than insightful of its causes. This study seeks to …
The Effects Of White Flight And Urban Decay In Suburban Cook County, Lindsay Haines, '10
The Effects Of White Flight And Urban Decay In Suburban Cook County, Lindsay Haines, '10
The Park Place Economist
Chicago, like any major city, is extremely diverse racially as well as economically. However, these interesting qualities do not stop at the city limits. The estimated population of the Chicago suburbs located in Cook County, IL is 2.44 million. Not only is this population almost bigger than the city itself, but it also exhibits equal diversity. For example, the population of suburbs like Kenilworth are 97% white and others like Phoenix are 1% white. Other suburbs like Riverdale have demographically transformed with the minority composition increasing by 80% in only twenty years. Similarly, these suburbs are also extremely economically polarized …
A Christian Augustinian Response To The Problem Of Evil In The Shinto Religion With Reference To The Thought Of Motoori Norinaga, Delia Ursulescu
A Christian Augustinian Response To The Problem Of Evil In The Shinto Religion With Reference To The Thought Of Motoori Norinaga, Delia Ursulescu
Masters Theses
Despite great advances within the last few decades of Western scholarship concerning the indigenous Japanese religion, little has been written on the Shinto concept of evil. Given the overall optimistic Shinto attitude toward life, the purpose of this thesis was to analyze its view of evil with reference to Motoori Norinaga's thought in order to find out whether Shinto understands it in a realistic manner. Another aim was to compare Norinaga's position to a Christian Augustinian view to determine which one offers a more coherent and comprehensive answer to the challenge of evil. The thesis examined Norinaga's available writings and …
Integrated Water Resources Management: A Theoretical Exploration Of The Implementation Gap Between The Developed And Developing Worlds, Jennifer S. Schiff
Integrated Water Resources Management: A Theoretical Exploration Of The Implementation Gap Between The Developed And Developing Worlds, Jennifer S. Schiff
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
As part of its Millennium Development Goals, the United Nations acknowledges that solving the world's water woes requires giving one billion additional people access to safe and affordable drinking water, while also noting that this is a difficult goal to achieve considering present environmental challenges. Amidst this atmosphere of vanishing freshwater, the legislative policy community has begun to encourage diverse discourse on the topic of efficient resource management, but the form and function of such a solution present unique political and theoretical challenges for policymakers and scholars alike. The current consensus among water managers is that a multifaceted policy framework …
Maturing International Cooperation To Address The Cyberspace Attack Attribution Problem, Jeff J. Mcneil
Maturing International Cooperation To Address The Cyberspace Attack Attribution Problem, Jeff J. Mcneil
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
One of the most significant challenges to deterring attacks in cyberspace is the difficulty of identifying and attributing attacks to specific state or non-state actors. The lack of technical detection capability moves the problem into the legal realm; however, the lack of domestic and international cyberspace legislation makes the problem one of international cooperation. Past assessments have led to collective paralysis pending improved technical and legal advancements. This paper demonstrates, however, that any plausible path to meaningful defense in cyberspace must include a significant element of international cooperation and regime formation.
The analytical approach diverges from past utilitarian-based assessments to …
Doubling Nato: Functional And Geographical Enlargement Of The Alliance, Ergodan Kurt
Doubling Nato: Functional And Geographical Enlargement Of The Alliance, Ergodan Kurt
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
This dissertation studies NATO expansion as institutional adaptation. More specifically, it examines the interaction between NATO's functional and geographical enlargement. This study asserts that there is a close relationship between NATO's new functions and its enlargement. Over time, NATO evolved from a collective defense alliance to a comprehensive security organization. As NATO undertook new functions, its capabilities no longer matched the requirements of the new functions. The geographical enlargement, in fact, constitutes a vehicle for the fulfillment of the capability shortfall.
Furthermore, this dissertation asserts that the new security environment will force NATO to focus on the regions at a …
Austerity, Abundance, And The Investor States: The Political Economy Of Sovereign Wealth Funds, Manda Shemirani
Austerity, Abundance, And The Investor States: The Political Economy Of Sovereign Wealth Funds, Manda Shemirani
Graduate Program in International Studies Theses & Dissertations
Sovereign Wealth Funds (SWFs) are not new, but their foreign investment created concerns among many states in 2005 and 2006. Many policy makers argued that the ownership of foreign governments in specific areas may expose their countries to various risks. The concerns in the United States were from a national security perspective, while Europe was more worried about the lack of reciprocity and established standards. The political economy literature lacks a suitable framework for the study of investor states. The mainstream economic view contends that SWFs are a result of balance of payments surpluses and are used for economic smoothing …
