Gloria Anzaldua’S Borderlands: Pathway To A Pluralized Persona, Christine Cloud Apr 2010

Gloria Anzaldua’S Borderlands: Pathway To A Pluralized Persona, Christine Cloud

Journal of South Texas English Studies

A literary criticism of the book "Borderlands," by Gloria Anzaldua is presented. It highlights the history of the unequal relationship between the Gringos and the Chicanos societies. It explores the transformation of all the members of the world community who have ever felt themselves victims of oppression and marginalization. Also discussed is the self-conscious attempt to construct and theorize a type of post-modern collective self called the new mestiza identity.

Social And Community Media In Poor And Marginalized Urban Communities: A Study Of Collective Action In Kiber, John Perkins Apr 2010

Social And Community Media In Poor And Marginalized Urban Communities: A Study Of Collective Action In Kiber, John Perkins

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Traditional media is often thought of as a space for resourced storytellers to inform a passive and silent audience. In the Kibera informal settlement, this paradigm has allowed large commercial media houses to misrepresent the realities of everyday life. Community media houses have the opportunity to correct this misrepresentation and redefine who we perceive to be the storyteller. By striving to highlight news and issues affecting the community, media houses such as Pamoja FM radio station and the Kibera Journal have given a voice to Kibera. Yet with the introduction of innovative media technologies, the distinction between the storyteller and …

Literacy, Technology And Discernment: Investigating The Role Of Information Technology In Literacy Education, Alisa Siebenga-Weening Apr 2010

Literacy, Technology And Discernment: Investigating The Role Of Information Technology In Literacy Education, Alisa Siebenga-Weening

Master of Education Program Theses

Regardless of geography, segments of the population struggle to read and write. This struggle is so pronounced that literacy has become an issue for many governments, and policies have been set in place to help ensure a literate society. Educators, in their struggle to respond to the problem, have looked to a variety of methods to help children become literate. One prominent means is the use of information technology and computer-assisted instruction. Because of its significant role, it is necessary for the Christian educator to examine the impact of computer technology, to investigate the role and extent of use of …

Effectiveness Of Rivpacs Predictive Models To Evaluate Diatom Response To Nutrient Stress In Coastal California Streams, Charles Ritz Apr 2010

Effectiveness Of Rivpacs Predictive Models To Evaluate Diatom Response To Nutrient Stress In Coastal California Streams, Charles Ritz

SNS Master's Theses

The goal of this project was to determine if predictive models of diatom assemblages would provide an effective method to report on biological degradation in streams along the Central Coast of California. This project focused on nutrient stress to evaluate stream water-quality degradation. I employed the River Invertebrate Prediction and Classification System (RIVPACS) model with diatom assemblages. Diatoms were an accessible indicator of nutrient stress occurring in abundance on Central Coast streams. Diatom samples from 190 stream sites were used to construct and test the RIVPACS model. The RIVPACS methodology used a reference condition approach to compare assemblages at reference …

Healthy And Affordable Food In Low-Income Neighborhoods: A Community Food Security Assessment Of Smith Hill, Kelly Bevis Apr 2010

Healthy And Affordable Food In Low-Income Neighborhoods: A Community Food Security Assessment Of Smith Hill, Kelly Bevis

Social Work Theses

Community food security refers to a situation where all residents in a community can access affordable and nutritionally adequate foods. When a community has difficultly accessing healthy and affordable food, it is an issue of community food insecurity; low-income and urban communities experience this problem greatly. Key indicators of food insecurity include households with incomes below the poverty line, minority households, female-headed households, households with children, a lack of a supermarket and lack of adequate transportation. This study examined the issue of community food security in the Smith Hill neighborhood of Providence, RI. It was hypothesized that the Smith Hill …

Dipl 6197 Us Policy On Stabilization And Reconstruction In Fragile States, Robert L. Barry Ambassador Apr 2010

Dipl 6197 Us Policy On Stabilization And Reconstruction In Fragile States, Robert L. Barry Ambassador

Diplomacy Syllabi

This course will deal with the new developments in US policy for dealing with failing or fragile states. Earlier references to "nation-building" have been replaced by the term "stabilization and reconstruction" and both the military and civilian sides of government have developed doctrine for dealing with these situations. These doctrines claim to recognize that efforts to remake societies in our image are doomed due to lack of resources and resistance to change in developing nations, though the steps proposed may be quite far-reaching. While lessons learned in conflict situations such as Bosnia, Iraq and Afghanistan will be considered, primary emphasis …

Are Wetland Regulations Cost Effective For Species Protection? A Case Study Of Amphibian Metapopulations, Dana M. Bauer, Peter W. C. Paton, Stephen K. Swallow Apr 2010

Are Wetland Regulations Cost Effective For Species Protection? A Case Study Of Amphibian Metapopulations, Dana M. Bauer, Peter W. C. Paton, Stephen K. Swallow

Natural Resources Science Faculty Publications

Recent declines in amphibian populations have raised concern among conservation biologists, with habitat loss and degradation due to human activities among the leading causes. The most common policies used to protect the habitat of pond-breeding amphibians are wetland regulations that safeguard the wetland itself. However, many amphibians spend much of their adult lives foraging and over-wintering in upland habitats and exist as metapopulations with dispersal among ponds. With no consideration of lands in the dispersal matrix, wetland policies may be ineffective at protecting amphibians or other wetland species that disperse across the landscape. This paper examined the adequacy and cost …

The Working Of Entrepreneurs In A Competitive Low Technology Industry: The Case Of Master Weavers In The Handloom Industry, Suresh Bhagavatula Apr 2010

The Working Of Entrepreneurs In A Competitive Low Technology Industry: The Case Of Master Weavers In The Handloom Industry, Suresh Bhagavatula

Working Papers

It is virtually impossible for any industry to remain relevant for centuries but the handloom industry in India has been surviving since time immemorial. It is popularly believed that this industry has survived due to the monetary and regulatory interventions of the government. It is true that millions have been spent by the various governments in the last 100 years but the industry has also had the innate doggedness to survive and remain relevant to the current textile needs of the country. Textile entrepreneurs (also known as master weavers) have played an important role in making handloom extremely competitive. It …

Suspended Sediment Transport Dynamics And Sediment Yields In Relation To Watershed Characteristics, Upper Green River Basin, Kentucky, James Nii Aboh Otoo Apr 2010

Suspended Sediment Transport Dynamics And Sediment Yields In Relation To Watershed Characteristics, Upper Green River Basin, Kentucky, James Nii Aboh Otoo

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

Sediment delivery is a major problem in the Green River, Kentucky, home of 71 of the state’s 103 known mussel species and 151 fish species. The river also provides water for many of its surrounding counties. This research focuses on how suspended sediment loads, grain size, and sediment concentration during runoff events are related to watershed characteristics.

The research characterized suspended sediment loads, grain size, and sediment concentration during runoff events and how they were related to watershed characteristics such as hydro-climatic regime, watershed size, geology and soils, topography and landuse conditions and land cover conditions. The study focused on …

Never Land, W. Scott Olsen Apr 2010

Never Land, W. Scott Olsen

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

According to W. Scott Olsen, there are two reasons for flying. The first is just to get somewhere. The second has nothing to do with destination. It is this second reason, expressing our deepest curiosity and our longings for infinity, grace, and clarity, that Never Land explores. At once frankly philosophical and engagingly practical, the book combines accounts of touring in the air, the history of flight, the sensations of flying, and the technical acts and facts of navigating, piloting, lifting off, and landing. As it brings together many views on flight, Never Land also chronicles Olsen’s own personal journey—his …

Perimeters Of Democracy, Heather Fryer Apr 2010

Perimeters Of Democracy, Heather Fryer

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

During times of conflict, Americans have worried that enemies within would twist freedom of speech into a weapon of propaganda and use freedom of assembly to unleash violent internal chaos. As a result, the government isolated and confined within federal communities groups that they deemed dangerous. Within these so-called cultural structures of realistic democracy, the government awkwardly attempted to protect citizens while curbing their rights and freedoms. It is no accident that the government’s enclosed worlds were most numerous in the American West, where abundant open space has long symbolized the glory of American freedom and progress. Heather Fryer looks …

Mining Archaeology In The American West, Donald L. Hardesty Apr 2010

Mining Archaeology In The American West, Donald L. Hardesty

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Mining played a prominent role in the shaping and settling of the American West in the nineteenth century. Following the discovery of the famous Comstock Lode in Nevada in 1859, mining became increasingly industrialized, changing mining technology, society, and culture throughout the world. In the wake of these changes Nevada became an important mining region, with new people and technologies further altering the ways mining was pursued and miners interacted. Historical archaeology offers a research strategy for understanding mining and miners that integrates three independent sources of information about the past: physical remains, documents, and oral testimony. Mining Archaeology in …

Editing Eden, Frank Hutchins, Patrick C. Wilson Apr 2010

Editing Eden, Frank Hutchins, Patrick C. Wilson

University of Nebraska Press: Sample Books and Chapters

Recent scholarship on the Amazon has challenged depictions of the region that emphasize its natural exuberance or represent its residents as historically isolated peoples stoically resisting challenges from powerful global forces. The contributors to this volume follow this lead by situating the discussion of the Amazon and its inhabitants at the intersections of identity politics, debates about socioeconomic sovereignty, and processes of place making. Editing Eden focuses on case studies from Amazonian Brazil, Colombia, and Ecuador regarding the themes of indigeneity, community making, development politics, and the transcendence of indigenous/nonindigenous divides. Portraits of the Amazon emerge through an analysis of …

Games For Civic Learning: A Conceptual Framework And Agenda For Research And Design, Chad Raphael, Christine Bachen, Kathleen-M. Lynn, Jessica Baldwin-Philippi, Kristen A. Mckee

Communication

Scholars, educators, and media designers are increasingly interested in whether and how digital games might contribute to civic learning. However, there are three main barriers to advancing understanding of games’ potential for civic education: the current practices of formal schooling, a dearth of evidence about what kinds of games best inspire learning about public life, and divergent paradigms of civic engagement. In response, this article develops a conceptual framework for how games might foster civic learning of many kinds. The authors hypothesize that the most effective games for civic learning will be those that best integrate game play and content, …

Livestock Protection Dogs In The 21st Century: Is An Ancient Tool Relevant To Modern Conservation Challenges?, Thomas M. Gehring, Kurt C. Vercauteren, Jean-Marc Landry

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications

Europe and North America share a similar history in the extirpation and subsequent recovery of large carnivore and ungulate species. Both continents face challenges and opportunities for managing human-wildlife conflict at the junction of livestock production and wildlife conservation. Predation of livestock and disease transmission between wildlife and livestock is an ongoing and escalating worldwide issue. In order to manage this conflict, producers need effective tools, and they have used livestock protection dogs (LPDs) for reducing predation for well over 2000 years. We review the history of the use of LPDs, including the loss of information on their use and …
