Comparison Of Algorithms And Parameterisations For Infiltration Into Organic-Covered Permafrost Soils, Yinsou Zhang, Sean K. Carey, William L. Quinton, J. Richard Janowicz, John W. Pomeroy, Gerald N. Flerchinger May 2010

Comparison Of Algorithms And Parameterisations For Infiltration Into Organic-Covered Permafrost Soils, Yinsou Zhang, Sean K. Carey, William L. Quinton, J. Richard Janowicz, John W. Pomeroy, Gerald N. Flerchinger

Geography and Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Infiltration into frozen and unfrozen soils is critical in hydrology, controlling active layer soil water dynamics and influencing runoff. Few Land Surface Models (LSMs) and Hydrological Models (HMs) have been developed, adapted or tested for frozen conditions and permafrost soils. Considering the vast geographical area influenced by freeze/thaw processes and permafrost, and the rapid environmental change observed worldwide in these regions, a need exists to improve models to better represent their hydrology.

In this study, various infiltration algorithms and parameterisation methods, which are commonly employed in current LSMs and HMs were tested against detailed measurements at three sites in Canada’s …

A History Of Violence: Testing The ‘Culture Of Honor’ In The Us South, Pauline Grosjean May 2010

A History Of Violence: Testing The ‘Culture Of Honor’ In The Us South, Pauline Grosjean

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

Using historical data on early settlers to the United States, this paper tests and confirms the “Culture of Honor” hypothesis by socio-psychologists Dov Cohen and Richard Nisbett (1994, 1996). This hypothesis argues that the high prevalence of homicides in the US South stems from the fact that it was a frontier region settled by people whose economy was based on herding: the Scotch-Irish. Herding societies develop cultures of honors for reasons having to do with their precariousness: violence is a necessary condition to preserve a reputation for toughness and deter animal theft. Using historical census data on waves of settlers …

Northern Ireland And The Irish Constitution: Pragmatism Or Principle?:The Mcgimpsey Case, Rory Mcgimpsey May 2010

Northern Ireland And The Irish Constitution: Pragmatism Or Principle?:The Mcgimpsey Case, Rory Mcgimpsey

Dissertations

The central theme of my thesis concerns the case of McGimpsey v. Ireland [1990] I.R. 110 and its wider significance. All discussion in the thesis can be traced back to this seminal case. On a wider level, the thesis discusses Articles 2 and 3 of the Constitution, tracing their history from their ideologically irredentist origins through to their amendment following the Good Friday Agreement, with its pluralist, inclusive re-definition of nationality. In essence, the thesis attempts to analyse the relationship between the two jurisdictions in Ireland, and how it evolved over time. I have endeavoured to explain how the 1937 …

Building Steprelationships: Emerging Adult Stepchildrens' Perceptions And Experiences Of Their Stepparents, Luke Thomas Russell

Honors Scholar Theses

A grounded theory study was conducted with ten (7 female, 3 male) emerging-adults in stepfamilies to examine their perceptions and experiences of their stepparents, and what factors influence the development and maintenance of these steprelationships. Three primary categories emerged from the data: (1) Stepchildrens' perceptions of their stepparents presence in their lives, including both physical closeness and physical and emotional involvement (2) The perceived level of authenticity within the steprelationship, and (3) The level of clout stepchildren afforded to their stepparents' position within their lives and families.

Additional factors found to influence the levels of presence, authenticity, and clout were …

Aim - Austin Intermodal Transit Center, Nathan E. Bicak May 2010

Aim - Austin Intermodal Transit Center, Nathan E. Bicak

Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses

This project will propose a new intermodal/multimodal center for the city of Austin, Texas that will serve both transit needs as well as social functions. Through research and programming it will become evident what types of spaces are necessary to carry out the latter.

Austin is currently in the process of researching and engineering a mass transit system for its ever-growing transportation needs, specifically a light-rail system. In the late 1960s Austin’s population was roughly what Lincoln’s is today, about 250,000 people. The greater Austin area now totals more than two million people. Through the course of this growth, little …

Tracking Sources Of Enrollment At Etsu Through The Use Of Gis., Charles Thomas Phillips May 2010

Tracking Sources Of Enrollment At Etsu Through The Use Of Gis., Charles Thomas Phillips

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The objective of this research is to look at fall freshmen enrollment data for East Tennessee State University and see if patterns in the enrollment exist. This paper focuses on fall freshmen enrollment during the years 1997, 2002, and 2007 at ETSU. Once the data were gathered, they were mapped and statistically analyzed using geographic information systems (GIS) and statistical analysis software.

Many things were learned from the GIS maps created and statistical analysis. First, the maps showed that from 1997 to 2007, ETSU's enrollment became more consolidated in the East Tennessee region and moved westward into Middle and Western …

"Neither The Hue Of Their Complexion Nor The Blood Of Afrik Have Any Connection With Cowardice:" The Impact Of British Slave Emancipation In The American Revolution, Murphy Macduffey Wood May 2010

"Neither The Hue Of Their Complexion Nor The Blood Of Afrik Have Any Connection With Cowardice:" The Impact Of British Slave Emancipation In The American Revolution, Murphy Macduffey Wood

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The American Revolution teaches many important lessons concerning the struggle for freedom and independence. The voluminous record amassed by historians on the subject focuses on every aspect of the war from the Enlightenment’s influence on the writings of men like Thomas Jefferson down to the type of buttons worn on the uniforms of the combatants. The scant attention given to the role of slaves during and after the conflict belies the critical role these men and women played in shaping its outcome. Moreover, a closer evaluation of the strong desire to be free present in the slaves, and how they …

The River And The Factory: Momentum And Shifting Dynamics Between The Shenandoah River And Avtex Fibers, 1939-1989, Christina Wulf May 2010

The River And The Factory: Momentum And Shifting Dynamics Between The Shenandoah River And Avtex Fibers, 1939-1989, Christina Wulf

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

From 1940-1989, a huge rayon factory—at one time the largest in the world—operated on the banks of the South Fork of the Shenandoah River in the Town of Front Royal, Virginia. Three different companies owned the facility: American Viscose Corporation (AVC) built it in 1939 and ran it until 1963 when the Food Machinery Corporation (FMC Corp.) conglomerate purchased AVC. In 1976, an FMC executive bought the rayon plant in Front Royal in a leveraged buyout, renaming the facility Avtex Fibers, Inc. From early on, the plant had serious problems with waste materials—including many toxic substances—produced when manufacturing rayon. During …

Incognesia, Holly George May 2010

Incognesia, Holly George

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

A monograph for the MFA Thesis Exhibition for Holly George, exhibited in Sawhill Gallery in Duke Hall April 5, 2010 - April 10, 2010. The title of the exhibition, Incognesia, is indicative of the artist's process of mapmaking. It is a fusion of other words, an invention based on fact but nevertheless on the verge of fantasy. Like each word in Lewis Caroll's poem, "Jabberwocky," the title calls multiple meanings to mind. It utilizes the Latin incognitae, meaning "unknown," but also references its later cartographic usage of "undiscovered" lands. While the suffix, -nesia, links to a series of islands such …

Desertification And Political Onstability In The Tigris And Euphrates River Basins, Kanar Hamza May 2010

Desertification And Political Onstability In The Tigris And Euphrates River Basins, Kanar Hamza

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

The Tigris and Euphrates river basin is located in arid and semi-arid regions of the Middle East. Five countries share this basin, with Turkey, Syria, and Iraq being the main nations concerned. The water resources of the basin are unable to meet the entire current and future water demands of all of these nations. Water scarcity in this basin is caused by one-sided, unilateral development projects and complicated by natural conditions, such as reduced annual rainfall. Shared freshwater resources are complicated matters that cause tensions between nations sharing river basins, especially in arid and semi-arid regions. The shared fresh water …

"Just Before A Mighty Earthquake:" Three Southwest Georgia Counties During The Secession Crisis, November 1860-January 1861, Thomas William Robinson

Masters Theses, 2010-2019

This work discusses three counties in Georgia during the secession crisis from Abraham Lincoln's election in November 1860 until Georgia seceded from the Union in January 1861. The focus of this paper originally began with Thomas County, Georgia, the only county in southwest Georgia not to vote for secession. Research began with the simple idea of finding out why Thomas County's citizens opposed secession. Dougherty and Muscogee counties were included to add a broader scope to the research and make the paper more useful for comparison to other counties in Georgia. By using methodology consist with historical research, the conclusion …

Counseling International Students: Presenting Concerns And Implications For The College Mental Health Professional, Anna Khizanishvili

Educational Specialist, 2009-2019

This research project details the presenting concerns of international students studying in American colleges and universities such as: lack of social support, acculturation, anxiety, depression, academic struggles, financial concerns, and language barriers. Despite the numerous significant stressors that they experience while studying in the United States, international students are less likely than American students to use counseling services on U.S. college campuses. A case study of an international student, Deepa, is presented and details her struggles with studying in the United States. Implications and recommendations for mental health professionals working with international college students are presented.

College Students’ Perceptions About Seeking Help For Their Learning Disabilities At A Competitive University, Kristen L. Burley May 2010

College Students’ Perceptions About Seeking Help For Their Learning Disabilities At A Competitive University, Kristen L. Burley

Educational Specialist, 2009-2019

With nearly 98% of public institutions reporting enrollment of students with a disability, requests for services, supports, and accommodations is increasing (Gordon et al., 2002; National Council on Disabilities, 2003). However, certain barriers and/or perceptions get in the way of students’ mobility in seeking and acquiring necessary accommodations. While disability services and accommodations are available, it appears that many students do not take advantage of them in a timely manner. While it is not required for a student to disclose information about a learning disability, the student will not be able to acquire any accommodations. Students should be prepared and …

Characterization Of An Urban Heat Island (Uhi) In The Tampa Region Of Florida, Joann Sullivan May 2010

Characterization Of An Urban Heat Island (Uhi) In The Tampa Region Of Florida, Joann Sullivan

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Numerous research studies have been conducted on the modification of weather and local climate by the urban environment. In studying the urban environment effects, researchers have investigated the urban heat island (UHI), anthropogenic cloud condensation nuclei, anthropogenic heat emissions and other factors. Many of these studies used data sampling networks, while other studies relied solely on computer modeling. This research has taken an approach between the sampling network studies (which were often limited in spatial density) and the pure computer model studies (which lacked the benefits of observational data) to investigate the Tampa Bay Region UHI. The research utilized inexpensive …
