Community Service-Learning And Cultivation Of Humanity And Social Awareness In Medical Students, Kai-Kuen Leung, Stanley Sl Tsai, Wei-Dan Wang Jun 2010

Community Service-Learning And Cultivation Of Humanity And Social Awareness In Medical Students, Kai-Kuen Leung, Stanley Sl Tsai, Wei-Dan Wang

Journal of Medical Education

Medical education suffered from overemphasis on technology and utilitarianism while leaving the humanistic care of patients untouched. Community service-learning is an educational strategy of learning through experience and self-reflection. Community service-learning emphasizes the balance between service and learning activities, community participation, self-reflection and reciprocity. It aims to meet both community needs and students' learning objectives. Service-learning can help foster civic attitude, social responsibility, communication skills, and respect for diversity. Moreover, it can also enhance teamwork, active learning attitude and skills, leadership ability, emotional growth, contextual learning, and knowledge application. Most important, service-learning can nurture humanity and social awareness. The notion …

The Market For Treaties, Natasha Affolder Jun 2010

The Market For Treaties, Natasha Affolder

Chicago Journal of International Law

Corporations are consumers of treaty law. In this Article, I empirically examine three biodiversity treaty regimes-the Convention on Biological Diversity, Ramsar Convention, and World Heritage Convention-to demonstrate that corporations implement or internalize treaty norms in a variety of ways that are not captured by the dominant model of treaty implementation-national implementation. As an exegetical model, I explore how corporations use biodiversity treaties as a source of private environmental standards. I focus on the interactions between mining and oil and gas companies and biodiversity treaties, as revealed through transactional documents, corporate reports, security law filings, and treaty secretariat reports. My central …

The Anti-Colonial Revolutionary In Contemporary Bollywood Cinema, Vidhu Aggarwal Jun 2010

The Anti-Colonial Revolutionary In Contemporary Bollywood Cinema, Vidhu Aggarwal

Faculty Publications

In her article "The Anti-Colonial Revolutionary in Contemporary Bollywood Cinema" Vidhu Aggarwal discusses several contemporary films including Rakesh Omprakash Mehra's Rang de Basanti with focus on the figure of the revolutionary hero. The Bollywood film is a cultural form that combines several aesthetic styles, from within India and from the outside. With its formal heterogeneity and as a product of one of India's largest cities, Mumbai Bollywood has had an ongoing fascination with "arrival," that is, with India's status as a contemporary nation-state. While some Bollywood films seem to celebrate fantasy scenarios of India's arrival on the global scene, at …

Scale Model Shake Table Testing Of Underground Structures In Soft Clay, Victor A. Crosariol Jun 2010

Scale Model Shake Table Testing Of Underground Structures In Soft Clay, Victor A. Crosariol

Master's Theses

Underground structures perform an important role in transportation systems in many seismically active regions around the world, but empirical data regarding the seismic behavior of these structures is limited. This research works towards filling that empirical gap through the use of scale model shake table testing. Underground seismic soil-structure interaction (USSSI) effects were investigated for a stiff rectangular tunnel cross-section embedded within soft clay. San Francisco Young Bay Mud was used as a prototype soil for developing a scale model soil mixture consisting of kaolinite, bentonite, class C fly ash, and water. A single cell Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART) …

Designing Online Collaborative Location-Aware Platform For History Learning, Xiaojun Chen, Jea H. Choi

Journal of Educational Technology Development and Exchange (JETDE)

The emergence of geographic visualization and location aware technologies provides educators and teachers with an opportunity to design more effective instructional materials. Visible Past is an innovative learning and discovery project that integrates mapping services with a content management system and 3D virtual reality capabilities. In addition, the system allows for the connection of physical locations or objects such as books and digital artifacts and documents through 2D codes. Similar to barcodes, they can be read by any camera enabled cell phone triggering information retrieval from the web. This adds an element of portability and of meshing up print based …

Cryogenic Refrigeration For Quantum Voltage Standards, Jeffrey Power Jun 2010

Cryogenic Refrigeration For Quantum Voltage Standards, Jeffrey Power

Physics

Currently the world maintains the voltage standard using a Josephson junction which makes use of the properties of superconductors and quantum tunneling. Current technology requires liquid He to cool the Josephson junctions to ~4 K to allow them to function as superconductors. He (l) is expensive and price is geographically dependent. Here we investigated using a cryocooler, modeled after a Gifford-McMahon Refrigerator, that could run on 120V (or a standard outlet) and used gaseous He as the working fluid –a less geographically dependent and inexpensive alternative to He (l). We found that indeed a standard outlet gaseous He compressor could …

Public Relations: The Integration Of Social Media Tools With Traditional P.R. Strategies, Michaela Bernard Jun 2010

Public Relations: The Integration Of Social Media Tools With Traditional P.R. Strategies, Michaela Bernard

Journalism

The history of public relations has followed a traditional path up until the introduction of the Internet and the world wide web. As the internet grew, so did different forms of public relations, specifically social media. Social media includes any and all public relations tactics that are user-created and shared freely. Some of these outlets include Facebook, Twitter, audio and video text, all of which are mostly shared and discussed online. Many people have little to no experience with social media, much less the internet, and because of this they are not able to utilize their public relations strategies to …

Modern Migration In Two Arabic Novels, Ikram Masmoudi Jun 2010

Modern Migration In Two Arabic Novels, Ikram Masmoudi

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Modern Migration in Two Arabic Novels" Ikram Masmoudi proposes that twentieth-century Arab fiction is marked by the theme of the journey in literal and figurative ways. This motif features the theme of departure and arrival through characters crossings borders from East to West and from the periphery to the center (i.e., the metropolis) in order to acquire knowledge, understanding, and empowerment and to get a sense of Western modernity. The departure and arrival of the main characters becomes the central aesthetic preoccupying with a focus on their arrival back home and their rediscovery of their own idea …

Modernity In Márquez And Feminism In Ousmane, Geetha Ramanathan Jun 2010

Modernity In Márquez And Feminism In Ousmane, Geetha Ramanathan

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Modernity in Márquez and Feminism in Ousmane" Geetha Ramanathan analyzes Gabriel García Márquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude and Sembène Ousmane's God's Bits of Wood. Ramanthan argues that if Márquez presents the semblance of the signs of modernity as fantasy and delusion, Ousmane's investment in the train as an instrument of the future in realist terms seems to challenge the modernist dictum that imperialism can be challenged only through modernist decenterings and through tricking and trumping. Yet, Ousmane's refusal to engage in the hallucination of the modern in his novel offers us a version of modernity that …

Danticat's The Dew Breaker, Haiti, And Symbolic Migration, Jennifer E. Henton

CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture

In her article "Danticat's The Dew Breaker, Haiti, and Symbolic Migration" Jennifer E. Henton analyzes Edwidge Danticat's novel with Lacanian thought. It is assumed frequently that literatures of the non-West "arrive" when they move from political and didactic traditions to the "aesthetic" and experimental models that delve into the terrain of the psyche. In The Dew Breaker, the Haitian family's move to the U.S., executed self consciously, indicates loss in a different sense than lack. In the case of Denticat's novel, loss or lack represent not a source of anxiety that evokes matters read in a psychoanalytical framework; instead, Henton …

Protected Areas Reduced Poverty In Costa Rica And Thailand, Kwaw S. Andam, Paul J. Ferraro, Katharine R. E. Sims, Andrew Healy, Margaret B. Holland

Economics Faculty Works

As global efforts to protect ecosystems expand, the socioeconomic impact of protected areas on neighboring human communities continues to be a source of intense debate. The debate persists because previous studies do not directly measure socioeconomic outcomes and do not use appropriate comparison groups to account for potential confounders. We illustrate an approach using comprehensive national datasets and quasi-experimental matching methods. We estimate impacts of protected area systems on poverty in Costa Rica and Thailand and find that although communities near protected areas are indeed substantially poorer than national averages, an analysis based on comparison with appropriate controls does not …
