Beyul Khumbu: Sherpa Constructions Of A Sacred Landscape, Lindsay Ann Skog Jun 2010

Beyul Khumbu: Sherpa Constructions Of A Sacred Landscape, Lindsay Ann Skog

Dissertations and Theses

Khumbu, part of Sagarmatha (Mt. Everest) National Park in eastern Nepal and an UNESCO World Heritage site, is home to the Sherpa people, ethnic Tibetan Buddhists who migrated to the region more than 500 years ago. Sherpas animate the landscape with localized water, tree, rock, and land spirits, identify sacred mountains, mainly associated with the Bönpo and Tibetan yullha traditions, and some view the landscape as a beyul, a sacred place and hidden valley protecting Buddhist people and beliefs in times of turmoil and need. These beliefs protect the natural environment through religious practices and taboos against environmentally harmful …

Collaboration Methods For Social Service Agencies: A Case Study Of Johnson County, Indiana, Larry Noonan

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Enabled by a shared Information Technology platform, social service agencies can collaborate and share information to better serve clients holistically, improve the agency's ability to raise funds, provide better statistics to stake holders, and predict social services needed in the future. Social service agencies have many barriers to overcome before successful collaboration such as security, client confidentiality, choosing a software stack, cost, and agreement among the agencies on what information they can share. This paper presents practical methodologies that can be used towards the development of an IT platform to support the collaboration of social service agencies in a local …

The Role Of Geographic Proximity And Industrial Structure In Metropolitan Area Business Cycles, Michael Hollar, Anthony Pennington-Cross, Anthony Yezer Jun 2010

The Role Of Geographic Proximity And Industrial Structure In Metropolitan Area Business Cycles, Michael Hollar, Anthony Pennington-Cross, Anthony Yezer

Finance Faculty Research and Publications

Measurement and prediction of aggregate economic fluctuations at the region, state, and metropolitan area level is a major challenge. As data quality and analytical techniques have improved, the analysis of coincident economic cycle indicators (CEI) has progressed from national to regional to state levels. This paper continues the trend of geographic disaggregation by constructing and analyzing CEI at the MSA level. The theoretical advantage of MSA level indexes is that they reflect labor market areas. Given lack of quarterly economic time series at the MSA level, we construct a new variable, the EPI (export price index). The EPI is an …

Performance Of Mapping-Grade Gps Receivers In Southeastern Forest Conditions, Michael D. Ransom, James Rhynold, Pete Bettinger

RURALS: Review of Undergraduate Research in Agricultural and Life Sciences

This study represents an assessment of two recently-available GPS receiver configurations used in mature southern pine and hardwood forests in the Piedmont of Georgia. Six control points were visited ten times, with WAAS (Wide Area Augmentation System) enabled, and 50 position fixes were recorded during each visit to each control point. We found that horizontal position accuracy was on the order of 2 m when WAAS was enabled in those receivers and post-collection differential correction was not employed. This was significant in that the accuracy of the receivers evaluated was greater than recent studies suggested even without the use of …

Women Mourners, Mourning "Nobody", Jennifer Pecora Jun 2010

Women Mourners, Mourning "Nobody", Jennifer Pecora

Theses and Dissertations

Historian David Bell recently suggested that scholars reconsider the impact of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars (1793-1815) upon modern culture, naming them the first "total war" in modern history. My thesis explores the significance of the wars specifically in the British mourning culture of the period by studying the war literature of four women writers: Anna Letitia Barbauld, Amelia Opie, Jane Austen, and Felicia Hemans. This paper further asks how these authors contributed to the development of a national consciousness studied by Georg Lukács, Benedict Anderson, and others. I argue that women had a representative experience of non-combatants' struggle to …

Spontaneous Transition To Superrotation In Warm Climates Simulated By Cam3, Rodrigo Caballero, Matthew Huber Jun 2010

Spontaneous Transition To Superrotation In Warm Climates Simulated By Cam3, Rodrigo Caballero, Matthew Huber

Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences Faculty Publications

Recent paleoclimate proxy reconstructions show that tropical surface temperatures may have been as high as 35°–40°C in the Early Cenozoic. Here, we study the tropical atmospheric circulation's response to temperatures in this range using a full-complexity atmospheric general circulation model (AGCM). We find that when equatorial surface temperatures exceed ∼33°C, the model undergoes a transition to equatorial superrotation, a state with strong annual- and zonal-mean westerlies on the equator. The transition is driven by zonal momentum convergence due to large-amplitude transient eddies on the equator. These eddies have a structure similar to the observed Madden-Julian Oscillation (MJO). The model's MJO …

Health Care Shortage Designations: Hpsa, Mua, And Tbd, Eileen Salinsky Jun 2010

Health Care Shortage Designations: Hpsa, Mua, And Tbd, Eileen Salinsky

National Health Policy Forum

A wide variety of federal programs designed to improve access to health care services rely on specific criteria to designate areas and populations eligible for funding and other types of aid. Two related yet distinct designations, the Health Professional Shortage Area (HPSA) and the Medically Underserved Area (MUA), are most commonly used to identify underserved people or places. This background paper reviews the methodologies currently utilized in these designations, identifies the federal programs that use these designations to allocate resources, describes proposals that have been advanced to consolidate and improve these designations, and discusses key issues and challenges for future …

C.S. Lewis, Platonism, And Aslan's Country: Symbols Of Heaven In The Chronicles Of Narnia, H. Dennis Fisher Jun 2010

C.S. Lewis, Platonism, And Aslan's Country: Symbols Of Heaven In The Chronicles Of Narnia, H. Dennis Fisher

Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016

C.S. Lewis held the conviction that all humans have meaningful images embedded in their minds that are often expressed in myths and legends. The richness of the Narnia Chronicles is often traceable to mythic patterns and philosophic thought employed by Lewis.

In The Chronicles of Narnia, C.S. Lewis envisions heaven through the symbolic presentation of “Aslan’s Country.” Every other world is linked to it as a peninsula is connected to a mighty continent. It can be reached only through magic or more often “the door of noble death.” Its boundaries expand according to the exploration quests of its inhabitants. Hence, …

So Old And So New: Memory And Expectation In The Fantastic Works Of C.S. Lewis And J.R.R. Tolkien, Megan J. Robinson Jun 2010

So Old And So New: Memory And Expectation In The Fantastic Works Of C.S. Lewis And J.R.R. Tolkien, Megan J. Robinson

Inklings Forever: Published Colloquium Proceedings 1997-2016

For both C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien, the realms and stories of Faërie and the fantastic, in addition to being entertaining were revelatory: insights about the very nature of Reality come through the images and narratives of these secondary worlds, in which the perception of time often plays a major role. Examining such issues as time and ultimate reality in Lewis’s and Tolkien’s works must take into account each author’s devout and profound Christian faith, oriented around the eucatastrophe of the Gospel message radiating backwards and forwards throughout human history. This faith thus shaped how they understood the past, present, …

A Psychological Sense Of Community As Experienced Among Immigrant Survivors Of Torture, Nancy Bothne Jun 2010

A Psychological Sense Of Community As Experienced Among Immigrant Survivors Of Torture, Nancy Bothne

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

Survivors of torture do not merely overcome the challenges posed by torture in order to develop a psychological sense of community among each other. Participants in this study used the understanding of torture and the unequivocal condemnation of it as a boundary within which they could develop connections with others. Among those who share this value, members influenced each other‘s new narratives about what it means to have been tortured, and about what it means to become survivors. This influence toward survivorship filled an important psychological need. The new narrative and the fulfilled needs also became the basis for the …
