E-Science And Data Support Services: A Survey Of Arl Members, Catherine Soehner, Catherine Steeves, Jennifer Ward
International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries, 31st Annual Conference
After working for several years to promote research library support for e-science and e-research, the Association of Research Libraries E-science Working Group surveyed member libraries in the Fall of 2009 to gather data on the state of engagement with e-science issues. ARL members include the largest research libraries in the US and Canada and collectively support a substantial proportion of the North American research enterprise. The survey provides a current snapshot of data curation and e-science support activities, documenting a range of approaches and strategies evolving at research institutions and among research libraries.
The research libraries reported on widespread planning …

E-Science At The University Of Minnesota: A Collaborative Approach, Lisa Johnston, Cody Hanson
International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries, 31st Annual Conference
In 2008 the University of Minnesota Libraries formed the E-science and Data Services Collaborative (EDSC). The group was formed amid an environment of emerging initiatives related to e-science at the University, and was intended to leverage our existing expertise, such as our nationally recognized assessments of researcher behavior, to develop new capacity and engage with campus partners to support e-science and data services. We will report on the EDSC’s progress to date, including the following four areas of focus:
• A Data Stewardship Report assessing requirements for support of e-science and data services, determining gaps in our capacity, and seeking …

Lessons Learned From A Two-Year Experience In Science Data Literacy Education, Jian Qin, John D'Ignazio
International Association of Scientific and Technological University Libraries, 31st Annual Conference
In spring 2008 and 2009, we offered a course “Scientific Data Management” to undergraduate and graduate students from science and technology majors with support from an NSF CCLI (award #0633447) grant. We actively advertised the course on campus and conducted outreach efforts to individual classes and faculty representing a wide range of science and technology disciplines. Each time the course was offered, we conducted pre- and post-course surveys to assess the instructional effectiveness and learning outcomes. This paper will describe our experience as well as lessons learned in three areas: science faculty perceptions on data management, effect of science curriculum …

The Interpretation Of Habitat Preference Metrics Under Use–Availability Designs, Hawthorne L. Beyer, Daniel T. Haydon, Juan M. Morales, Jacqueline L. Frair, Mark Hebblewhite, Michael Mitchell, Jason Matthiopoulos
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Models of habitat preference are widely used to quantify animal–habitat relationships, to describe and predict differential space use by animals, and to identify habitat that is important to an animal (i.e. that is assumed to influence fitness). Quantifying habitat preference involves the statistical comparison of samples of habitat use and availability. Preference is therefore contingent upon both of these samples. The inferences that can be made from use versus availability designs are influenced by subjectivity in defining what is available to the animal, the problem of quantifying the accessibility of available resources and the framework in which preference is modelled. …

An Assessment Of The Methods That Are Used To Recruit College Students Into The Turkish Hezbollah., Tuncay Unal
Theses and Dissertations
This study aims to identify tactics used by the Turkish Hezbollah to recruit college students into joining their terrorist organization. This study based on the assumptions that social networks and institutional structures are two main tools that are used effectively by the Turkish Hezbollah to recruit college educated students. In this sense, the researcher claims that Social Learning theory and Social Control Theories can be used to provide theoretical explanation to the Hezbollah’s recruitment strategy. Parallel to these theories assumptions, while having militants within social networks increases the likelihood of being recruited through social learning theory assumptions, college students who …

Why Is Africa Underdeveloped? [9th Grade], Robert Stafford
Why Is Africa Underdeveloped? [9th Grade], Robert Stafford
Understanding by Design: Complete Collection
Students will focus on levels of development in Africa and investigate why many parts of Africa are underdeveloped. Students will examine how physical geography impacts development, the effects of European colonization on African development, and contemporary issues (famine, conflicts, diseases, and political instability/corruption) that hinder development.
Students will then use this information to compare levels of development in African countries, explain why the developmental levels vary, and develop strategies to encourage development in struggling countries.

Evaluating User Modality Preference Effect On Cognitive Load In A Multimedia, Justin V. Scott
Evaluating User Modality Preference Effect On Cognitive Load In A Multimedia, Justin V. Scott
Purdue Polytechnic Masters Theses
Meaningful learning is defined as a deep understanding of the material, which includes attending to important aspects of the presented material, mentally organizing it into a coherent cognitive structure, and integrating it with relevant existing knowledge (Mayer & Moreno, 2003). Mayer and Moreno (2003) defines multimedia learning as learning from words and pictures, and multimedia instruction as presenting words and pictures that are intended to foster learning. The emergence of numerous learning style models over the past 25 years has brought increasing attention to the idea that students learn in diverse ways and that one approach to teaching does not …

Ancient Egypt [6th Grade], Jeanine Capitani
Understanding by Design: Complete Collection
This unit on Ancient Egypt is one of five units I teach about ancient civilizations after completing a study of what culture is and how it defines us. This unit focuses on the geography, religion, and social structures of ancient Egypt. It also emphasizes an understanding of the different time periods of Egyptian society from 4,500 BC- the 18th Dynasty. At the end of this unit on Egypt, the students will demonstrate knowledge of the culture of Egypt by writing and illustrating a story where they go back in time and describe two aspects of Egyptian culture as well as …

Narrating The Literate Identities Of Five Ninth Grade Boys On The School Landscape, Mary Frances Rice
Theses and Dissertations
I conducted a narrative inquiry with five ninth grade boys in my English class that I identified as displaying multiple literacies. The classes I taught the boys in were two sections of honors ninth grade English. The boys came from a variety of backgrounds and lived in various neighborhoods in the approximately 20,0000-member community where we all live. The site of this research was the junior high school in Utah where the boys attend school and I had been employed for six years. After the research was collected, I conducted several negotiation sessions with the boys and their parents at …

Navigation On A Great Ellipse, Tseng Wei-Kuo, Lee Hsuan-Shih
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
This paper presents contact formulae for the computation of the position, the distance, and the azimuth along a great ellipse. The proposed alternative formulae are to be primarily used for accurate sailing calculations on the ellipsoid in a GIS environment as in ECDIS and other ECS. Among the ECDIS Requirements is the need for a continuous system with a degree of accuracy consistent with the requirements of safe navigation. At present, this requirement is best fulfilled by the Global Positioning System (GPS). The GPS system is referenced to World Geodetic System 1984 (WGS 84) Datum. Using the ellipsoid model for …

Becoming American: The Socio-Economic And Cultural Landscape Of Kenyan Immigrants In Chicago, Il, Cyril O. Wilson, Chapurukha M. Kusimba
Journal of Global Initiatives: Policy, Pedagogy, Perspective
This study reports the emerging patterns of migration and settlement of Kenyans into the Chicago metropolitan area. Like most African immigrant communities in North America, economic downturn, political instability, and socio-economic polarization in African countries necessitated an appreciable quantum of emigration of Kenyans following the attainment of Africa's political independence in the 1960s. Most of the findings on housing characteristics, education, employment, patterns of family life, socio-cultural interaction, challenges encountered by new immigrants, and related phenomena evince parallels with other studies on African immigrants in North America.
