Mercury Concentrations In Fish From A Sierra Nevada Foothill Reservoir Located Downstream From Historic Gold-Mining Operations, Michael K. Saiki, Barbara A. Martin, Thomas W. May, Charles N. Alpers

United States Geological Survey: Staff Publications

This study examined mercury concentrations in whole fish from Camp Far West Reservoir, an 830-ha reservoir in northern California, USA, located downstream from lands mined for gold during and following the Gold Rush of 1848–1864. Total mercury (reported as dry weight concentrations) was highest in spotted bass (mean, 0.93 μg/g; range, 0.16–4.41 μg/g) and lower in bluegill (mean, 0.45 μg/g; range, 0.22– 1.96 μg/g) and threadfin shad (0.44 μg/g; range, 0.21–1.34 μg/g). Spatial patterns for mercury in fish indicated high concentrations upstream in the Bear River arm and generally lower concentrations elsewhere, including downstream near the dam. These findings coincided …

Crucial Role Of Mechanisms And Modes Of Toxic Action For Understanding Tissue Residue Toxicity And Internal Effect Concentrations Of Organic Chemicals, Beate I. Escher, Roman Ashauer, Scott Dyer, Joop L. M. Hermens, Jong-Hyeon Lee, Heather A. Leslie, Philipp Mayer, James P. Meador, Michael S. J. Warne

United States Department of Commerce: Staff Publications

This article reviews the mechanistic basis of the tissue residue approach for toxicity assessment (TRA). The tissue residue approach implies that whole-body or organ concentrations (residues) are a better dose metric for describing toxicity to aquatic organisms than is the aqueous concentration typically used in the external medium. Although the benefit of internal concentrations as dose metrics in ecotoxicology has long been recognized, the application of the tissue residue approach remains limited. The main factor responsible for this is the difficulty of measuring internal concentrations. We propose that environmental toxicology can advance if mechanistic considerations are implemented and toxicokinetics and …

More Green, Less Grief? Post-Katrina Reconstruction In New Orleans, Jessica Anne Plante Jan 2010

More Green, Less Grief? Post-Katrina Reconstruction In New Orleans, Jessica Anne Plante

Theses & ETDs

This thesis will explore, specifically in regards to the Lower Ninth Ward and New Orleans in the wake of Katrina, how construction of risk and pre-existing social/ environmental vulnerability leads to disaster, how cultural and social attachment necessitates the rebuilding of vulnerable cities, and how reconstruction can address vulnerability while preserving cultural-social importance. To achieve this, I use archival research on the subject, along with fieldwork and interviews with non-profit employees in New Orleans. How this reconstruction progresses will determine the future city. On the one hand, people are attached to the city because of its social and cultural history, …

Understandings Of Invasive Species In The United States, Cindy Li Jan 2010

Understandings Of Invasive Species In The United States, Cindy Li

Theses & ETDs

Invasive organisms hold a certain place of notoriety to many who know and deal with them, and in recent years, legislationfrom federal to county levelshas been passed to reduce or eradicate their populations. These efforts are spearheaded by ecologists and industries negatively affected by invasive organisms; however, they are not the only forces influencing how we think about invasive exotics. This thesis will attempt to draw connections between the cultural values and science that affect such policies and offer alternative ways of thought. Does our historically nativist view on nature carry through to today? How can alternative views benefit our …

Pacha Mama Politics Indigenous Environmental Discourse In Contemporary Ecuador, Nina C. Barraclough Jan 2010

Pacha Mama Politics Indigenous Environmental Discourse In Contemporary Ecuador, Nina C. Barraclough

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the relationship between indigenous identity and environmentalist discourse in the case of Ecuador's indigenous movement. The first chapter situates contemporary politics with a historical overview of indigenous marginalization and resistance in Ecuador. The second chapter analyzes the advantages and disadvantages of environmental identity politics as practiced by indigenous groups. The third chapter shows how the evolving language on indigenousness and environmental protection manifests itself in the 2008 Constitution of Ecuador. This thesis argues that the document's incorporation of indigenous-crafted alternatives to western discourses of nationality, nature, and development signified a reshaping of national values that better reflects …

Coral Reefs In The Gulf Of Mexico Strengthening Protection Policies, Christine Bowden Jan 2010

Coral Reefs In The Gulf Of Mexico Strengthening Protection Policies, Christine Bowden

Theses & ETDs

This thesis delves into coral reef protection policies as they exist today in the Gulf of Mexico, and how they can be improved in the future using existing and new legislation. My research describes the stressors, both anthropogenic and natural, that are affecting the health of the Gulf reef ecosystems, and goes into depth about the effects of each stressor and its causes. This thesis then goes into detail about the effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas, including several examples both on a global scale and more locally, in the Florida Reef Tract. Many of the coral reef ecosystems in the …

Mortality Patterns Of Army Chemical Corps Veterans Who Were Occupationally Exposed To Herbicides In Vietnam, Yasmin Cypel, Han Kang

United States Public Health Resources

PURPOSE: This research examined the risk of disease-related mortality of the Army Chemical Corps (ACC) veterans who handled/sprayed herbicides in Vietnam in comparison with their non-Vietnam veteran peers or U.S. men.

METHODS: Vital status was determined through December 31, 2005. All-cause mortality and cause-specific mortality were compared for individuals who served in Vietnam (n Z 2872) versus those who did not (n Z 2737). Similar analyses were completed on a subset of the original Vietnam cohort that consisted of individuals who either reported spraying herbicide (n Z 662) or not (n Z 811). The observed deaths for each …

Integrating Population Modeling Into Ecological Risk Assessment, Valery E. Forbes, Peter Calow, Volker Grimm, Takehiko Hayashi, Tjalling Jager, Annemette Palmqvist, Rob Pastorok, Dan Salvito, Richard Sibly, Julann Spromberg, John Stark, Richard A. Stillman

Valery Forbes Publications

Current approaches to ecological risk assessment (ERA) are not sufficient to address environmental protection goals stated in current regulations in the European Union, North America and elsewhere. For example, the data used to estimate the likelihood of adverse ecological effects typically include responses of survival, growth, or reproduction of individuals measured under constant and typically favorable laboratory conditions. But these organism-level endpoints are far removed from the ecological features that the process aims to protect (i.e., the long-term persistence of populations of species in space and time under naturally varying field conditions and in the presence of other stressors). Ecological …

Rhetorics Of Place And Ecological Relationships: The Rhetorical Construction Of Narragansett Bay, Matthew Ortoleva Jan 2010

Rhetorics Of Place And Ecological Relationships: The Rhetorical Construction Of Narragansett Bay, Matthew Ortoleva

Open Access Dissertations

As an ethnographic study of how language and rhetorical acts are used to construct, challenge, and change ecological relationships to the Narragansett Bay watershed, this dissertation argues that there are three architectonic, master discourses that dominate the discursive domain of the Narragansett Bay watershed: the discourse of science, the discourse of economics, and the discourse of spirituality. These master discourses construct and authorize particular world-views, give human agents the vocabulary to speak about the world in particular ways, and produce multiple other sub-discourses, which in turn construct different ecological relationships to Narragansett Bay and lead to particular attitudes, beliefs, and …

From Jook Joints To Sisterspace: The Role Of Nature In Lesbian Alternative Environments In The United States, Nancy Unger Jan 2010

From Jook Joints To Sisterspace: The Role Of Nature In Lesbian Alternative Environments In The United States, Nancy Unger

History

Despite the depth and breadth of Catriona Sandilands's groundbreaking "Lesbian Separatist Communities and the Experience of Nature," with its emphasis on communities in southern Oregon, Sandilands does not consider her article, published in 2002, to be "the last one on the topic." Instead she hopes "fervently that other researchers will enter into the ongoing conversation [about queer landscapes)" (136). This essay is an answer to her invitation to draw further "insight from queer cultures to form alternative, even transformative, cultures of nature" (135). It examines the role of place in the history of American lesbians, particularly the role of nonhuman …

Body Polluted: Questions Of Scale, Gender And Remedy, Dayna Nadine Scott Jan 2010

Body Polluted: Questions Of Scale, Gender And Remedy, Dayna Nadine Scott

Comparative Research in Law & Political Economy

This paper offers a critique of tort remedies grounded in feminist theory of the body. It demonstrates how tort law is invested in a notion of an individuated legal subject, which fails to capture the critical interconnectedness of bodies in a social, political, historical, and colonial context. Taking the ‘injury’ of endocrine disruption in a Canadian aboriginal community as an example of a contemporary pollution harm, the analysis considers various torts on a conceptual level, and what they might offer the Aamjiwnaang First Nation in the way of remedies. In each case, what the tort can do depends on how …

Variation In Leaf Stomatal Traits Of 28 Tree Species In Relation To Gas Exchange Along An Edaphic Gradient In A Bornean Rain Forest, Sabrina E. Russo, Whitney Logan Cannon, Christian Elowsky, Sylvester Tan, Stuart J. Davies Jan 2010

Variation In Leaf Stomatal Traits Of 28 Tree Species In Relation To Gas Exchange Along An Edaphic Gradient In A Bornean Rain Forest, Sabrina E. Russo, Whitney Logan Cannon, Christian Elowsky, Sylvester Tan, Stuart J. Davies

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Premise of the study: Quantifying variation in functional traits associated with shifts in the species composition of plant communities along resource gradients helps identify environmental attributes important for community assembly. Stomates regulate the balance between carbon assimilation and water status in plants. If environmental attributes affecting photosynthetic water-use efficiency govern species distribution along an edaphic gradient, then adaptive variation in stomatal traits of plant species specializing on different soils should reflect belowground resource availability.

Methods: We tested this hypothesis by quantifying stomatal trait variation in understory saplings of 28 Bornean tree species in relation to gas exchange and …

What Ever Happened To Canadian Environmental Law?, Stepan Wood, Georgia Tanner, Benjamin J. Richardson Jan 2010

What Ever Happened To Canadian Environmental Law?, Stepan Wood, Georgia Tanner, Benjamin J. Richardson

Articles & Book Chapters

This Article examines the history of Canadian environmental law to explain why it has become a laggard in both legal reform and environmental performance. Canadian environmental law has long been of interest to scholars worldwide, yet its record is often poorly understood. The Article contrasts recent developments with the seemingly progressive initiatives of the 1970s, and analyzes these trends in light of their political, economic, and governance context, as well as the wider critiques of environmental law. It argues that there is considerable room for Canadian governments to adopt more robust methods of environmental law, including following pioneering reforms advanced …

Status Of Credit For Prior Learning (Cpl) At The University Of Kentucky For 2008 & 2009 Official Cohorts, Randolph Hollingsworth Jan 2010

Status Of Credit For Prior Learning (Cpl) At The University Of Kentucky For 2008 & 2009 Official Cohorts, Randolph Hollingsworth

Undergraduate Education White Papers

This paper explores the college readiness levels of University of Kentucky's incoming first-year students, especially in preparation for success in UK's STEM majors.  Attention is paid to the statewide standards using ACT sub-scores in English, Reading and Mathematics, as well as the students’ scores from nationally recognized assessments (e.g., Advanced Placement scores). Evidence regarding a significant number of our entering cohorts for 2008 and 2009 (first time first-year, full-time, degree-seeking) who bring in credit for prior learning (CPL) is examined, and the paper discusses briefly how CPL affects their placement in their fall semester courses.
