Simulated Historical Water Levels In The Belgrade Lakes Watershed In Maine, Angela Warner, Adrienne Bowles Apr 2010

Simulated Historical Water Levels In The Belgrade Lakes Watershed In Maine, Angela Warner, Adrienne Bowles

Atlas of Maine

The dams in the Belgrade Lakes Region of central Maine control water flow of the six main ponds in the watershed. This project simulated historical water levels of these ponds and analyzed what surface area of land maybe have been exposed before the dams were constructed. Our simulation resulted in a 57.7% decrease in surface area of the ponds compared to current surface area. However, it is likely that the change we found is an overestimate because we used dam hydraulic height to calculate the change in water level instead of the actual water height.

South China Tiger Prey Habitat Suitability Assessment In Hupingshan-Houhe National Nature Reserve Complex, China, Yiyuan Qin, Philip Nyhus Apr 2010

South China Tiger Prey Habitat Suitability Assessment In Hupingshan-Houhe National Nature Reserve Complex, China, Yiyuan Qin, Philip Nyhus

Atlas of Maine

A habitat suitability assessment of prey species of south China tiger in Hupingshan-Houhe National Natural Reserve Complex was carried out using a Geographical Information System. Wild boar was selected as a model species. Information on the habitat requirements and natural history characteristics of wild boar was synthesized from published literatures. A preliminary Prey Habitat Suitability Index model was derived based on criteria that fulfill the species’ requirement and reduce human-wildlife conflict. The study identified parts of the NNR likely more suitable for wild boar. However, further study on wild boar habitat requirement, species distribution field data using radio telemetry, and …

Distribution Of Toxic Sites In Alaska In Relation To Populated Areas, Michelle Russell, Blair Braverman Apr 2010

Distribution Of Toxic Sites In Alaska In Relation To Populated Areas, Michelle Russell, Blair Braverman

Atlas of Maine

This project is a GIS analysis examining the distribution of toxic sites in Alaska, including Superfund sites, Toxics Release Inventory sites, mining waste sites, and Formerly Used Defense Sites, in relation to populated areas. Our goal was to determine whether these hazardous sites are located disproportionately near indigenous communities, whose populations may be particularly vulnerable to toxics due to their subsistence lifestyles. Our statistical analysis found that, in census tracts with at least one identified toxic site, the percentage of the population identifying as Alaska Native is 59% higher than in those census tracts without any toxic sites. Further analysis …

Population Change In The Belgrade Lakes, Alexander Hsiao, Matthew Cheever Apr 2010

Population Change In The Belgrade Lakes, Alexander Hsiao, Matthew Cheever

Atlas of Maine

The goal of our study was to determine how human population changed in the towns of the Belgrade Lakes Region and to project future population trends using existing rates of increase. We obtained population data for the towns in the Belgrade Lakes region of Maine (from 1950 to 2000 by decade) from Maine Office of GIS and proceeded to analyze them. Our analysis concluded that town populations in the Belgrade Lakes region increased by an average rate of 21.47%. The township of Oakland experienced the most population growth, increasing by 3,280 people, while Vienna experienced the least population growth, increasing …

Kennebec-Messalonskee Trails Map, Cassandra Knight, Wyatt Fereday Apr 2010

Kennebec-Messalonskee Trails Map, Cassandra Knight, Wyatt Fereday

Atlas of Maine

The goal of this project was to create a comprehensive map of the walking and hiking trails in the greater Waterville area. We mapped 48 miles of footpaths and off-road Kennebec Messalonskee Trails using hand-held GPS units. We overlaid these routes on satellite images of the Waterville area. Included in the map are trail head parking ares and major street names to facilitate navigation to trail heads. A table of trail lengths also was compiled.

Projected Whitewater Classifications Of Maine's Rivers, Anders Nordblom Apr 2010

Projected Whitewater Classifications Of Maine's Rivers, Anders Nordblom

Atlas of Maine

Whitewater canoeing, kayaking, and rafting is both a recreation and a business in the state of Maine. However, the importance of proper information when undergoing these activities is paramount for safety. This study used variables consisting of river width, slope, bedrock density, and flow volume to project the probability of rapids in sections of Maine’s rivers. This data was reclassified to model the whitewater classification scale defined by the international scale of river difficulty (I-V). The study was able to identify general locations, but likely overestimated the values. The classification with the highest number of segments was class IV with …

Commuter Travel Times From The Belgrade Lakes Region To Augusta And Waterville, Maine, Sarah Hart, Rachael Panning Apr 2010

Commuter Travel Times From The Belgrade Lakes Region To Augusta And Waterville, Maine, Sarah Hart, Rachael Panning

Atlas of Maine

Communities in the Belgrade Lakes Region of central Maine are “bedroom communities” where residents live in rural areas and commute to work in metropolitan areas including Waterville and Augusta, Maine. How much time does a resident of the Belgrade Lakes Region spend commuting? What are the most efficient routes from populated rural locations to city centers? We used ArcGIS Network Analyst to calculate travel times and routes from six town centers in the Belgrade Lakes Region to Waterville, Augusta-Capitol and University of Maine at Augusta. The mean travel times and distances from town centers to Waterville, Augusta-Capitol and University of …

Basin-Scale Water System Operations With Uncertain Future Climate Conditions: Methodology And Case Studies, Sebastian Vicuna, John A. Dracup, Jay R. Lund, Larry L. Dale, Edwin P. Maurer Apr 2010

Basin-Scale Water System Operations With Uncertain Future Climate Conditions: Methodology And Case Studies, Sebastian Vicuna, John A. Dracup, Jay R. Lund, Larry L. Dale, Edwin P. Maurer

Civil, Environmental and Sustainable Engineering

The old and useful paradigm used by water resource engineers, that hydrology in a given place is stationary, and hence it is sufficient to look into the past to plan for the future, does not hold anymore, according to climate change projections. This becomes especially true in snow-dominated regions like California, where not only the magnitude but also the timing of streamflow could be affected by changes in precipitation and temperature. To plan and operate water resources systems at the basin scale, it is necessary to develop new tools that are suited for this nonstationary world. In this paper we …

Managing Growth: Best Practices Of Family-Owned Businesses, Justin M. Andrews Apr 2010

Managing Growth: Best Practices Of Family-Owned Businesses, Justin M. Andrews

Honors Projects in Management

Family-owned businesses represent the majority of business in the United States. As consumers and employees, we are compelled to their sense of trustworthiness that all too often disappears in the business world. Our economy depends on the success of family-owned businesses, but only one third of these organizations successfully transition to the second generation and only one in ten survive to the third generation. While a series of best practices attempt to prescribe solutions their challenges, these practices fail to account for the various types of family-owned businesses. More specifically, many types of family-owned businesses exist as evident by specific …

A Multi-Disciplinary Overview Of Chagas In Periurban Peru, Sarah Mccune, Angela M. Bayer, Gabrielle C. Hunter, Natalie M. Bowman, Juan G. Cornejo Del Carpio, Cesar Naquira, Robert H. Gilman, Caryn Bern, Michael Z. Levy Apr 2010

A Multi-Disciplinary Overview Of Chagas In Periurban Peru, Sarah Mccune, Angela M. Bayer, Gabrielle C. Hunter, Natalie M. Bowman, Juan G. Cornejo Del Carpio, Cesar Naquira, Robert H. Gilman, Caryn Bern, Michael Z. Levy

Journal of International and Global Studies

There are between 8 and 11 million cases of America Human Trypanosomiasis, commonly known as Chagas disease, in Latin America. Chagas is endemic in southern Peru, especially the Arequipa region, where it has expanded from poor, rural areas to periurban communities. This paper summarizes the findings of four studies in periurban Arequipa: on determinants of disease-vector infestation; on prevalence, spatial patterns, and risk factors of Chagas; on links between migration, settlement patterns, and disease-vector infestation; and on the relationship between discordant test results and spatially clustered transmission hotspots. These studies identified two risk factors associated with the disease: population dynamics …

Within-Group Ethnic Differences Of Black Male Stem Majors And Factors Affecting Their Persistence In College, Shane Y. Williamson Ed.D. Apr 2010

Within-Group Ethnic Differences Of Black Male Stem Majors And Factors Affecting Their Persistence In College, Shane Y. Williamson Ed.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

The present study examined how familial and institutional factors interact with the academic experiences of a diverse group of Black males enrolled as science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) majors at one university. Ogbu’s (1998) Cultural-Ecological Theory of Minority School Performance, a theoretical framework, posits that the manner by which a group achieves minority status, coupled with community and family educational values, impacts academic achievement. Immigrants, voluntary minorities, perform better academically than involuntary minorities (nonimmigrants) because they are more accepting of and more likely to adapt to the White middle-class norms upon which schools in the United States are based …

The Art Of Governing The Self And Others In The Christian Philippines, Pak Nung Wong D.Phil. Apr 2010

The Art Of Governing The Self And Others In The Christian Philippines, Pak Nung Wong D.Phil.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Through an ethnographic depiction of cultural creolization, this paper will detail the ways in which traditional Filipino values have been successfully mixing with and eventually lodging into the intersubjective landscape of Cagayan Valley, where the Chinese, Ibanag, Ilocano, and Itawes ethnic groups dwell. This cultural creolization process informs the ways in which the imagined social reciprocity between the self and others has been governed by a historically constituted power/knowledge system: the padrino system. This system is mainly composed of the symbiotic codes and social practices of (1) Catholicized ritual kinship and (2) the Tagalog ethics of “debt of gratitude” (utang …

Theorizing Impending Peripheries: Postindustrial Landscapes At The Edge Of Hyper-Modernity’S Collapse, Ismael Vaccaro Ph.D. Apr 2010

Theorizing Impending Peripheries: Postindustrial Landscapes At The Edge Of Hyper-Modernity’S Collapse, Ismael Vaccaro Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This article discusses the ways in which the predominant economic mechanisms of capitalism, characterized by a hyper-mobility of flows, affect actual places and people. The rationality informing these mechanisms is the quest for a reduction of costs and the increase of potential benefit, and this can only be achieved by jumping from locale to locale searching for a cheaper labor force, new pools of resources, or an absence of environmental regulations. Mobility becomes the fundamental framework through which to understand modernity and its new economic articulations and their associated sovereignties. Anthropology has often discussed and theorized the impact of market …

Decisive Thaw: The Changing Pattern Of Relations Between Nigeria And Equatorial Guinea, 1980-2005, David Aworawo Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This article examines the nature and changing pattern of relations between Nigeria and Equatorial Guinea from 1980-2005. It states that relations between the countries improved tremendously in the quarter century covered in this study compared to the two decades preceding that time frame (1960-1980) due to of a number of domestic political and economic changes that occurred in both countries, as well as the transformation of the international system in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The paper explores the specific changes that took place in Nigerian-Equatorial Guinean relations from1980 onwards and the factors that influenced them. The termination of …

Mastering The Midas Touch: The Indo-Trinidadian Diaspora In North America And England, 1967-2007, Jerome Teelucksingh Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This article will assess the experiences of the Indo-Trinidadian immigrant population during 1967 to 2007. The displaced Indo-Trinidadians residing in North America and Britain were challenged to define themselves in relation to Afro-Caribbean and Asian-Indian immigrants. The broad categories used to determine the success or failure of migration included culture, social mobility, identity and religion. The research will prove that the Indo-Trinidadian diaspora in North America and England have experienced considerable social mobility and acculturation.

Selecting The Best Location For A Meteorological Tower: A Case Study Of Multi-Objective Constraint Optimization, Aline James, Craig Tweedie, Tanja Magoc, Vladik Kreinovich, Martine Ceberio

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Using the problem of selecting the best location for a meteorological tower as an example, we show that in multi-objective optimization under constraints, the traditional weighted average approach is often inadequate. We also show that natural invariance requirements lead to a more adequate approach -- a generalization of Nash's bargaining solution.
