Vantage Point: The Representation Of Place And The Visual Experience, Jennifer A. Cohen Apr 2010

Vantage Point: The Representation Of Place And The Visual Experience, Jennifer A. Cohen

Scripps Senior Theses

We, as human beings, are unique creatures that have a need to form places. This obsession with claiming spaces and turning them into places starts at a young age. Maybe it is the first time a child goes to the park and claims a corner of the sand pit, because they think the sand is better on the right side. Perhaps it is a specific seat in the bleachers a person sits in at every home football game. Or maybe it is much more significant, like the spot on the path by the curved tree, next to the bike shed …

Phenomenological Explanation Of Cell Inactivation Cross Section In Terms Of Direct And Indirect Action, Faika A. Azooz, Suaad A. Meerkhan

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Objectives: The aim of this study was to use survival curves data for the inactivation of V79 cells and CHO-K1 cells by protons, neutrons, C12 ions and He3 ions to study the role of direct and indirect action in cell inactivation. Methods: A large number of survival curves for the inactivation of V79 cells by protons, neutrons, and C12 ions and for CHO-K1 cells inactivated by He3 ions over a wide energy range were taken from published references. Experimental data points were extracted from the published survival curves using MATLAB (Version 7.0) and fitted to the linear quadratic equation. The …

Dew Line Passage: Tracing The Legacies Of Arctic Militarization, Stacey A. Fritz Apr 2010

Dew Line Passage: Tracing The Legacies Of Arctic Militarization, Stacey A. Fritz

Anthropology

Grounded within the context of modern American militarization, this dissertation is a descriptive, ethnohistorical, and ethnographic study focusing on the impacts and legacies of the development, implementation, and decommissioning of the western sector of the Distant Early Warning radar line (DEW Line) in northern Alaska and Canada's western Arctic. Understanding the localized social and environmental impacts of global militarization is a critical task for anthropology and one that coincides in the North with the need to gather histories from Inuit perspectives. This study's purposes are to elucidate how the global phenomenon of modern militarization penetrates and brings about change in …

Development And Application Of A Methodology To Estimate Regional Natural Conditions For Trace Metals In Marine Sediments Of Southcentral Alaska's Coastal Region, Douglas H. Dasher Apr 2010

Development And Application Of A Methodology To Estimate Regional Natural Conditions For Trace Metals In Marine Sediments Of Southcentral Alaska's Coastal Region, Douglas H. Dasher

Marine Biology

Increasing levels of resource development and population growth along Alaska's relatively pristine coastline require responsible environmental stewardship that is based on scientifically defensible monitoring and assessment. This thesis develops a methodology to assess the spatial distribution of coastal sediment trace metals and estimate their natural condition along Alaska's coastline. Marine sediments provide a better integrated long-term signal for naturally occurring and anthropogenic chemicals than repeated water measurements. The first of three manuscripts reports on marine sediment trace metal concentrations from a probabilistic sampling survey of Alaska's Southcentral coastal region. Results are described on a proportional basis, i.e., percent of estuary …

Liberal Arts Books On Demand: A Decade Of Patron-Initiated Collection Development, Part 1, Judith M. Nixon, Kristine J. Anderson, Robert S. Freeman, Jean-Pierre Herubel, Lawrence J. Mykytiuk, Suzanne M. Ward

Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research

The Purdue University Libraries was an early implementer of purchasing rather than borrowing books requested through interlibrary loan. This pioneering user-initiated acquisitions program, started in January 2000 and called Books on Demand, is managed by the interlibrary loan unit. Now that the program has reached its tenth year, the authors revisit their initial 2002 study to analyze books purchased in the six top subject areas across the whole decade. Subject librarians in their review of the liberal arts titles selected found that the books were appropriate additions and that these titles expanded the cross-disciplinary nature of the collection. The Books …

Scaling Up Ecosystem Services Values: Methodology, Applicability And A Case Study, Luke M. Brander, Andrea Ghermandi, Onno Kuik, Anil Markandya, Paulo A.L.D. Nunes, Marije Schaafsma, Alfred Wagtendonk

Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers

The approach of using existing data on economic values of local ecosystem services for an assessment of these values at a larger geographical scale can be called “scaling up”. In a scaling-up exercise, economic values from a particular study site are transferred to another geographical setting, for instance to the regional, national or global scale. This paper proposes a methodology for scaling up ecosystem service values to a European level, assesses the availability of data for conducting this method, and illustrates the procedure with a case study on wetland values. The proposed methodology makes use of meta-analysis to produce a …

Market Approaches To Water Allocation: Lessons From Latin America, Carl Bauer Bauer Apr 2010

Market Approaches To Water Allocation: Lessons From Latin America, Carl Bauer Bauer

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Latin American experiences with water markets offer lessons to the U.S. because they have emerged in different political and economic contexts. The Western U.S. experience has been longer and has defined some of the world's classic cases of market allocation of water. These cases, however, have been driven by domestic factors and have evolved within domestic social and institutional contexts, which are easy for people in the U.S. to take for granted. Looking at Chile and Mexico can help us see Western U.S. water allocation with fresh eyes. These Latin American cases have been strongly influenced by international theories and …

Ecosystem Services And Reallocation Choices: A Framework For Preserving Semi-Arid Regions In The Southwest, David S. Brookshire, David Goodrich, Mark D. Dixon, L. Arriana Brand, Karl Benedict, Kevin Lansey, Jennifer Thacher, Craig D. Broadbent, Steve Stewart, Molly Mcintosh, Doosun Kang Apr 2010

Ecosystem Services And Reallocation Choices: A Framework For Preserving Semi-Arid Regions In The Southwest, David S. Brookshire, David Goodrich, Mark D. Dixon, L. Arriana Brand, Karl Benedict, Kevin Lansey, Jennifer Thacher, Craig D. Broadbent, Steve Stewart, Molly Mcintosh, Doosun Kang

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

Conservation of freshwater systems is critical in the semi-arid Southwest where ground water and flood regimes strongly influence the abundance, composition, and structure of riparian vegetation. At the same time, these systems are in high demand for competing human uses. To address this conflict, natural scientists must evaluate how anthropogenic changes to hydrologic regimes alter ecological systems. A broad foundation of natural science information is needed for ecological valuation efforts to be successful. This paper examines how to incorporate hydrologic, vegetation, avian, and economic models into an integrated framework to determine the value of changes in ecological systems. We have …

Mycorrhization Of Ponderosa Pine In A Second-Growth Sierra Nevada Forest, R. F. Walker, W. Cheng, D. W. Johnson

Western North American Naturalist

Ectomycorrhizal colonization and rooting characteristics were quantified in a mature ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws.) stand in the western Sierra Nevada. Root length totaled 3835.9 m · m−2 of forest floor surface area, with 96% consisting of the fine-root fraction. Total root dry weight and volume were 2230.4 g · m−2 and 5807.4 cm3 · m−2 of forest floor area, respectively, with 69% of the former and 75% of the latter accounted for by the coarse fraction. Fine roots were most prevalent in the upper 15 cm of the mineral soil profile, and …
