Larval Transport Of Brachyuran Crab In Kachemak Bay, Alaska, Megan M. Murphy
Larval Transport Of Brachyuran Crab In Kachemak Bay, Alaska, Megan M. Murphy
Marine Biology
"This study's primary goal was to understand the oceanographic effects on larval crab transport and distribution between an estuarine inner and more oceanic outer bay in the subarctic estuary of Kachemak Bay, Alaska. Plankton tows and hydrographic measurements (temperature and salinity) were taken along the boundary between the two bay parts from March - October on spring and neap tides. Summer water flow and in Kachemak Bay is predominantly freshwater-driven and density patterns vary inter-annually with the amount of freshwater supplied to the inner bay. Larvae of seven crab species occurred in a seasonal sequence and the crab larval assemblage …

Teaching And Learning Process On Renewable Energy And Sustainable Development, Caitlin Brotzmann Ba, Academic Director
Fostering Multicultural Competence and Global Justice: an SIT Symposium
Though the global situation is complex and daunting, education for sustainable development attempts to empower students with the knowledge, values, and ability not only to understand but also to act upon that understanding so that they might create a world in harmony with the environment. In summer 2009, 19 university students from North America came to Iceland to study renewable energy on the SIT Study Abroad (a program of World Learning) program ―Iceland: Renewable Energy, Technology, and Resource Economics.‖ The students traveled around the country, stayed with host families, underwent intensive coursework, visited power plants and policy firms, and conducted …

An Emerging Disease Causes Regional Population Collapse Of A Common North American Bat Species, Winifred F. Frick, Jacob F. Pollock, Alan C. Hicks
KIP Articles
White-nose syndrome (WNS) is an emerging disease affecting hibernating bats in eastern North America that causes mass mortality and precipitous population declines in winter hibernacula. First discovered in 2006 in New York State, WNS is spreading rapidly across eastern North America and currently affects seven species. Mortality associated with WNS is causing a regional population collapse and is predicted to lead to regional extinction of the little brown myotis (Myotis lucifugus), previously one of the most common bat species in North America. Novel diseases can have serious impacts on naïve wildlife populations, which in turn can have substantial impacts on …
Geospatial Technology/Traditional Ecological Knowledge-Derived Information Tools For The Enhancement Of Coastal Restoration Decision Support Processes, Matthew Bethel
LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations
This research investigated the feasibility and benefits of integrating geospatial technology with traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) of an indigenous Louisiana coastal population in order to assess the impacts of current and historical ecosystem change to community viability. The primary goal was to provide resource managers with a comprehensive method of assessing localized ecological change in the Gulf Coast region that can benefit community sustainability. Using Remote Sensing (RS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), and other geospatial technologies integrated with a coastal community's TEK to achieve this goal, the objectives were (1) to determine a method for producing vulnerability/sustainability mapping products for …
Comparative Thermodynamic And Enbironmental Performance Of A Unique Cogeneration Power Plant Using Operational Data, Whitney Domigan
Comparative Thermodynamic And Enbironmental Performance Of A Unique Cogeneration Power Plant Using Operational Data, Whitney Domigan
Theses
The John B. Rich Memorial Power Station, located in the United States, is an 88.4 MW cogeneration power plant that has a unique relationship with its surrounding environment. The power station makes use of a plentiful and local byproduct of coal mining, called culm, as a feedstock. Culm is a low energy combination of anthracite coal, ash, and rock left over from the inefficient removal of rock from usable coal in the peak days of coal mining. For decades, culm deposits have leached pollution into groundwater and inhibited normal plant growth. By using culm, the power station removes a significant …

The Use Of Macroinvertebrates As Water Quality Indicators Along Two Streams In A Disturbed Landscape In Cañitas, Costa Rica, August 2010, Emily Thorpe
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Human alteration of natural landscapes often has significant impacts on nearby aquatic ecosystems, affecting both abiotic and biotic factors. Water quality testing has primarily depended on the monitoring of abiotic factors; however, the use of biotic indicators has emerged as a valuable tool. This study looks at the water quality of two joined streams in Cañitas, Costa Rica, a region dominated by coffee and dairy production. The abiotic indicators measured included dissolved oxygen, temperature, nitrogen, phosphorous, pH, and turbidity. Macroinvertebrates were sampled as the biotic indicators. Principal Components Analysis was used to determine the similarity between sites. Based on BMWP’-CR …

Petrology And Geochemistry Of The Pompton Pink Granite, New Jersey Highlands, Ian Phillip Johnson
Petrology And Geochemistry Of The Pompton Pink Granite, New Jersey Highlands, Ian Phillip Johnson
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
The Pompton Pink Granite is a small (~1 km2), post-orogenic granitoid body located in the New Jersey Highlands. It is a mildly peraluminous (ASI or aluminum saturation index, A/CNK = molar Al2O₃ / (CaO + Na₂O + K₂O) > 1.0) pluton composed of microcline, microperthite, quartz, oligoclase, epidote, biotite, and magnetite and is classified as a granite based on its mineral and geochemical composition using standard IUGS classification schemes. The Pompton Pink Granite shows similar major-element geochemistry to other A-type granitoids found in the New Jersey Highlands, but its trace element geochemistry distinguishes it from these other …
Sustainable Environments And Pro-Environmental Behavior, Jessica L. Kirk
Sustainable Environments And Pro-Environmental Behavior, Jessica L. Kirk
Interior Design Program: Student Creative Activity
This thesis examines the ability of the sustainably designed building to alter occupant behaviors using LEED for New Construction and Major Renovation, Green Building Rating System™ as a standard of measure. A cross sectional survey compares the pro-environmental behaviors, intentions, environmental knowledge, and pro-environmental orientation of occupants working in a traditionally designed building and occupants working in a LEED-NC certified building located on the University of Nebraska - Lincoln Campus. While there is a visible increase in the pro-environmental variables for occupants working in the sustainable environment, data analysis indicates that these differences are not statistically significant for any of …

Denison House: Women's Use Of Space In The Boston Settlement, Heather Marie Capitanio
Graduate Masters Theses
Established in 1892, Denison House Settlement in Boston, Massachusetts was the third college settlement of its kind in the United States. Like other settlement houses of the time, Denison House was established as a base for community refurbishment and statistical study. Located at 93 Tyler Street in the rundown South Cove area of Boston, it offered its lower class "neighbors" a variety of activities and facilities within its perimeters. Judging only from late nineteenth-century attitudes and mores, one would assume that the women who worked and lived at Denison House would have been turned away by the poor residents of …
Feminist Aesthetics And The Neglect Of Natural Beauty, Sheila Lintott
Feminist Aesthetics And The Neglect Of Natural Beauty, Sheila Lintott
Faculty Journal Articles
Feminist philosophy has taken too long to engage seriously with aesthetics and has been even slower in confronting natural beauty in particular. There are various possible reasons for this neglect, including the relative youth of feminist aesthetics, the possibility that feminist philosophy is not relevant to nature aesthetics, the claim that natural beauty is not a serious topic, hesitation among feminists to perpetuate women's associations with beauty and nature, and that the neglect may be merely apparent. Discussing each of these possibilities affords a better understanding of, but none justify the neglect of natural beauty in feminist aesthetics.

Comparison Of Abundance Of Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi On Sun- And Shade-Grown Coffea Arabica Plants, August 2010, John A. Colantonio
Comparison Of Abundance Of Vesicular-Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungi On Sun- And Shade-Grown Coffea Arabica Plants, August 2010, John A. Colantonio
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Large-scale coffee agriculture can have significantly detrimental effects on the environment. However, organic coffee production lowers these impacts and helps to conserve tropical diversity by reducing need for soil inputs. Natural, healthy soils contain beneficial vesicularmycorrhizal (VAM) fungi. These fungi help cycle nutrients, and support plant health and growth. Mycorrhizal mutualisms are abundant and effective in particular habitats, particularly those in which the fungi do not exhaust carbon resources for the plant. This study compares the abundance of VAM fungi vesicles on the roots of organic shade-grown coffee plants and those grown in the sun. Root samples were collected from …
Inflorescence Size And Butterfly Visitation In Lantana Camara (Verbenaceae), August 2010, Calli Thompson
Inflorescence Size And Butterfly Visitation In Lantana Camara (Verbenaceae), August 2010, Calli Thompson
Monteverde Institute: Tropical Ecology and Conservation
Pollinators greatly influence the fitness of most tropical plants, and how effective plants are at attracting pollinators is key to their success. This investigation focuses on how inflorescence size of Lantana camara affects butterfly visitation. Naturally occurring inflorescence size was determined by counting how many flowers per inflorescence and how many inflorescences were in bloom per branch. The average number of flowers per inflorescence is 37 and the average number of inflorescences in bloom per branch is 2. To assess the impact of inflorescence size on butterfly visitation, five different sizes of L. camara inflorescences were created by bundling from …

Environmental Science and Management Faculty Publications and Presentations
Robin Leichenko and Karen O‘Brien have proposed ―double exposure‖ as a conceptual framework to demonstrate how processes of globalization and global environmental change (GEC) redefine risk and encourage new, interrelated responses to social and ecological transitions (O‘Brien and Leichenko, 2000; Leichenko and O'Brien, 2008). In particular, the concept encourages researchers and policy makers to consider interplay between global climate change and globalization and how this is expressed unevenly across space. After reviewing the ways double exposure has been used in the literature, we consider four case studies to investigate the utility of the framework for analyzing and understanding climate change …

Costs And Benefits Of Variable Nest Density In Burrowing Owls: Effects On Predation, Ectoparasites, Egg Yolk Hormones, And Productivity, Justin Lamar Welty
Boise State University Theses and Dissertations
Nesting density in birds is influenced by a number of factors including food availability, predation, and breeding site availability. As a result of a species’ nesting density, individuals incur certain costs and benefits related to predation rates, parasite levels, and productivity. I evaluated hypotheses related to these costs and benefits in burrowing owls (Athene cunicularia hypugaea) that nested within the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area in southern Idaho. I calculated territory overlap, an index of nesting density, of actual nests by creating a 200m radius buffer around each nest and measuring the percentage …
