Getting Families Involved In Students’ Education Through Home Visits At Midwestern Charter Schools, Hakan Solak

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Home visits are a model of communication after school time when school staff members actually go into students homes to foster a relationship among students, families, and teachers. The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore how home visits take place in a single charter school and how families are involved in the educational process of students at Midwestern Charter Schools.

Thirteen participants from Chicago Math and Science Academia (CMSA) were interviewed via an open-ended questionnaire. Additionally, two home visit observations were made by the primary investigator in the natural setting of the homes of two students. Through this …

A Case Study Of The Impact Of Filmmaker Decisions In The Construction Of A Documentary: Helen Whitney's (2007) The Mormons, Elizabeth Joy Mott Dec 2010

A Case Study Of The Impact Of Filmmaker Decisions In The Construction Of A Documentary: Helen Whitney's (2007) The Mormons, Elizabeth Joy Mott

Theses and Dissertations

Informed by theories of media framing, exemplification, and non-fiction film production, this case study used as its sample for textual analysis the typed transcripts from the final cut of Helen Whitney's (2007) documentary film, The Mormons, and the interview transcripts of the 15 key commentators interviewed for the documentary. These theories suggest that (a) media producers condense topics in the media by selecting information that connects news stories to a larger context and imbues them with symbolic value; (b) verbal and visual examples have been shown to be more easily retrieved in memory than abstract ideas and are consequently …

Assessing Multicultural Art Education: What Approaches Are Currently Being Used In Virginia Public High Schools?, Laura Nichols

Theses and Dissertations

This study utilized a survey of Virginia public high school teachers to examine how teachers understand multicultural education, how frequently they teach from this perspective, what cultures are represented, what teaching strategies they use, and what, if any incentives would encourage them to teach in this way more frequently. Through analysis of the findings, three major themes emerged which describe participants’ views of the purpose of multicultural education. These themes are “exposure” to other cultures, “understanding” of the way cultures interact and of the context surrounding a culture’s art, and promoting “equity” in the classroom environment and by encouraging students …

Action Research: Can It Be A Means For Helping Teacher Candidates Learn About Student Diversity?, Alisa Bates, Laura S. Pardo Dec 2010

Action Research: Can It Be A Means For Helping Teacher Candidates Learn About Student Diversity?, Alisa Bates, Laura S. Pardo

i.e.: inquiry in education

This paper describes the use of action research in a teacher education course as a way to support novice teachers in meeting the learning needs of a diverse student population. Our experiences as instructors in teacher education courses led us to look for strategies that could support novices’ attempts to meet students’ diverse needs because students viewed this as one of their greatest challenges as beginning teachers. We explore action research as one such strategy to respond to this learning need. We examine this practice for supporting novice teachers and consider three cases of student learning as examples. Our findings …

The Critical Friends Group: A Strategy For Developing Intellectual Community In Doctoral Education, Tracie Costantino Dec 2010

The Critical Friends Group: A Strategy For Developing Intellectual Community In Doctoral Education, Tracie Costantino

i.e.: inquiry in education

A key recommendation from the Carnegie Initiative on the Doctorate project is for doctoral programs to focus on developing intellectual communities that are knowledge-centered and multigenerational. In this article I describe a graduate art education course, Writing Critique in Art Education, which uses the Critical Friends discussion protocol to facilitate a heterogeneous intellectual community for doctoral and master’s level students. Using a practitioner inquiry methodology, I investigated how the use of a Critical Friends protocol influenced the development of an intellectual community in this course, and how the intellectual community supported students’ growth as educational researchers, future teacher educators, and …

The Concept Of Value In Design Practice - An Interview Study, Katarina Wetter Edman Dec 2010

The Concept Of Value In Design Practice - An Interview Study, Katarina Wetter Edman

ServDes Conference Series

Use and the value thereof are implicit in the design discourse and therefore rarely explicitly spoken of; although they are at the core of design practice. With the recent turn to a service dominant logic perspective; the service marketing discourse opens up for understanding value as value-in-use and value-in-context. This paper empirically explores and describes ways in which professional designers themselves express “value-in-use”. The findings suggest that professional designers do not focus explicitly on value as a standalone concept; but conceptualize value-in-use through contextualization and an extensive use of emotions.

These cards have been developed to assist cross functional teams during the first phases of the new service development (NSD) process. This paper describes the development of the tools; their intended use and their evaluation. The results show that the toolkit assists the innovation process and helps develop team cohesiveness. The card-based approach offers a tangibility that teams find useful; and that offers multiple usage alternatives. Discussion …

Exploring Networked Innovation; Results Of An Exploration And The Setup Of An Empirical Study, Katinka Bergema, Rianne Valkenburg, Maaike Kleinsmann, Cees De Bont

ServDes Conference Series

The growing complexity of societal problems and the increasing need to co-design contexts together with the service or product; force companies to collaborate in innovation. This networked innovation requires people to design together; who not only come from different disciplines; but also come from different organisations and companies. The collaboration in networked innovation therefore adds another level of complexity in addition to the (better known) collaboration in mono- and multidisciplinary teams and introduces new issues.

The growing complexity of societal problems and the increasing need to co-design contexts together with the service or product; force companies to collaborate in innovation. …

Methane Digesters, Thomas Van Steyn Dec 2010

Methane Digesters, Thomas Van Steyn

Dairy Science

Anaerobic digestion has many different avenues for opportunity in use on farms. The objective of my senior project is to determine the economic viability of alternative methane digesters on a dairy. Currently the conversion of animal manure to biogas through the process of anaerobic digestion is widely used in Europe. In the U.S. anaerobic digesters have become increasingly in demand by environmental groups and dairymen. Digesters environmental impact involves the benefit by capturing the biogas that comes off animal manure. Methane, a green house gas, is the one with the most concern that is captured by methane digesters. The biogas …

Quantitative Hedge Fund Selection, Melvyn Teo Dec 2010

Quantitative Hedge Fund Selection, Melvyn Teo

Research Collection BNP Paribas Hedge Fund Centre

Prior research has shown that small funds, young funds, and local funds outperform their older, larger, and distant counterparts. According to the literature, hedge fund performance is driven by fund capacity constraints, managerial incentives, and local information. I revisit these studies on hedge funds and test whether their results hold up in recent data. By doing so, I lay the foundations for a quantitative hedge fund selection framework.
