A Study On Legal And Ethical Issues Surrounding Health Practitioner Pro Bono Services, Lori Khan Ms, Clt, Dpt Dec 2010

A Study On Legal And Ethical Issues Surrounding Health Practitioner Pro Bono Services, Lori Khan Ms, Clt, Dpt

Journal of Health Ethics

The purpose of this paper is to explore the legal and ethical implications of pro bono health care services in the United States and abroad. The research regarding volunteer or pro bono health services has focused mainly on physician involvement in volunteer medical services, or pro bono health services, with research showing only 39% of physicians, compared to 30% of general public, taking part in volunteer services to patients and the community (Grande, D, and Armstrong, K, 2007). Historically, pro bono services were derived from the Canons of Professional Ethics in 1908 and evolved into the Model Code of Professional …

Dachau—Remembering The Unforgettable, Jennie Gunn Ph.D., Fnp, Carroll Gunn M.A.

Journal of Health Ethics

Ethical research provides great benefit to the public, but ethical research is not guaranteed. Research can go terribly wrong when research subjects are not protected. Egos of scientists and others in power can cause disastrous results, and that is what happened at the Dachau concentration camp in Germany. Because of incidents such as this, medical research at universities is now reviewed by Institutional Review Boards to protect subjects. But not so long ago, in the Dachau concentration camp, researchers were free to impose pain and death upon prisoners in the name of research. Prisoners were mistreated to glean knowledge; many …

Informed Consent: Elective Abortion, Kaye Wilson-Anderson Dsn, Msn

Journal of Health Ethics

This article presents an overview of the history of informed consent, identifies the necessary elements of informed consent and provides a discussion of the controversy surrounding informed consent for an elective abortion. The most current scientific reports of risk and benefits of elective abortions are examined and essential information for informed consent for an elective abortion is identified.

Hydraulic Conductivity Of Cement-Treated Soils And Aggregates After Freezing, Michael Scott Shea Dec 2010

Hydraulic Conductivity Of Cement-Treated Soils And Aggregates After Freezing, Michael Scott Shea

Theses and Dissertations

Improvements in the strength and durability of frost-susceptible soils and aggregates can be achieved through chemical stabilization using portland cement, where the efficacy of cement stabilization for improving durability depends on the degree to which hydraulic conductivity is reduced. Hydraulic conductivity is commonly estimated from basic soil properties using Moulton's empirical equation. However, the hydraulic conductivity estimation does not consider the detrimental effects of freezing or the benefits of cement stabilization. The purpose of this research was to derive new equations relating hydraulic conductivity after freezing to specific material properties of cement-treated soils and aggregates stabilized with different concentrations of …

Publications and Research

Amazon.com’s announcement in July 2010 that eBooks out sold print books for the previous three months indicates that eBooks are here to stay. What effect will this have on teaching and learning? Will ease of access and portability facilitate cheating and plagiarism? How will eBooks and eReaders work in an urban academic environment? Are eReaders and eBooks the new digital divide?

Faculty from the Leonard Lief Library at Lehman College will share their experience with Sony eReaders and downloadable eBooks via OverDrive. Following this presentation there will be a guided discussion on eReader and eBook issues, such as:

  • How do …

Design Of S-Band Transition Based On Microstrip Quarter-Wave Transformers, Bashir Souid, Josh Merchant, Michael Rice, Mahmoud El Sabbagh Dec 2010

Design Of S-Band Transition Based On Microstrip Quarter-Wave Transformers, Bashir Souid, Josh Merchant, Michael Rice, Mahmoud El Sabbagh

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

In this technical report, the design of a high-frequency matching circuit is presented. This circuit is a transformer comprising a cascade of multisections of quarter-wavelength transmission lines. The transformer, also referred to as matching circuit, is implemented based on microstrip technology. The matching circuit is required to perform as a transition from a 10-Ω load to a 50-Ω source. Moreover, this transition is specified to have a return loss more than 20 dB over the entire S-band from 2 GHz to 4 GHz. Analytical model developed and verified by full-wave simulation results indicates that the design of a quarter-wavelength transformer …

Patient Perceptions Of Physician Empathy, Satisfaction With Physician, Interpersonal Trust, And Compliance, Mohammadreza Hojat, Daniel Z. Lewis, Kaye Maxwell, Fred Markham, Richard Wender, Joseph S. Gonnella Dec 2010

Patient Perceptions Of Physician Empathy, Satisfaction With Physician, Interpersonal Trust, And Compliance, Mohammadreza Hojat, Daniel Z. Lewis, Kaye Maxwell, Fred Markham, Richard Wender, Joseph S. Gonnella

Department of Psychiatry and Human Behavior Faculty Papers

Objectives: This study was designed to investigate psychometric properties of the Jefferson Scale of Patient Perceptions of Physician Empathy (JSPPPE), and to examine correlations between its scores and measures of overall satisfaction with physicians, personal trust, and indicators of patient compliance.

Methods: Research participants included 535 out-patients (between 18-75 years old, 66% female). A survey was mailed to participants which included the JSPPPE (5-item), a scale for measuring overall satisfaction with the primary care physician (10-item), and demographic questions. Patients were also asked about compliance with their physician's recommendation for preventive tests (colonoscopy, mammogram, and PSA for age and gender …
