Investigation Of A Classroom-Based Reading Intervention Strategy For Older Elementary Students With Poor Decoding Skills, Shara Brinkley Jan 2010

Investigation Of A Classroom-Based Reading Intervention Strategy For Older Elementary Students With Poor Decoding Skills, Shara Brinkley

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Using a response to intervention framework, this study investigates the efficacy of a classroom-based intervention for struggling readers with decoding deficits in the upper elementary grades. Twenty two students in the fourth and sixth grades from four classrooms in low-performing schools received either a short 20-minute intervention delivered by their teacher or access to the lessons for an equivalent amount of time but no teacher instruction. Using three orthographic patterns, the 24 lessons consisted of a series of ten minimally contrasted words differing by one letter. The students in the experimental group decoded the words using a visual alphabet (Phonic …

Thermal Conductivity And Its Effects On The Performance Of Pcc Pavements In Mepdg, Upender Kodide Jan 2010

Thermal Conductivity And Its Effects On The Performance Of Pcc Pavements In Mepdg, Upender Kodide

LSU Master's Theses

This study developed a standard thermal conductivity test procedure to test concrete specimens and studied factors influencing those specimens. The thermal conductivity of concrete is significantly affected by moisture content, type, and percentage of coarse aggregate; this finding was confirmed statistically by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA). The study also developed a model for predicting the thermal conductivity of concrete that varies with moisture content and the coarse aggregate percentage. To understand the effect of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), this study also measured thermal conductivity of control and ternary mixtures. An increase in thermal conductivity percentage due to increase in moisture …

Developing And Building Collaborations Between A Cooperative Extension Service And A Local School And Its Community, Robin Boudreaux Landry

LSU Master's Theses

The purpose of this study is to determine the relationships and collaborations that have been established between a southern Louisiana parish Cooperative Extension Service and a low socio-economic school and its community as measured by the number of collaborations created and new programs launched, that has created a school and community partnership with the school with the planning, implementing and planting of a school garden. A qualitative study using the interview method was used to gather data. Analysis consisted of examining data for themes and discriminate cases. Guiding questions that centered on specific data were developed. Personal interviews were conducted …

Maladies Of Modernity: Scientism In Politics, David Nathan Whitney Jan 2010

Maladies Of Modernity: Scientism In Politics, David Nathan Whitney

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This dissertation explores the complex relationship between science and politics. More specifically, it focuses on the problem of scientism. Features of scientism include the dogmatic faith in the methods of the natural sciences (and the accompanying assumption that those methods can be successfully imported into the social sciences), a materialistic worldview, the rejection of the bios theoretikos, the prohibition of philosophical questions, and an emphasis on immanent fulfillment through the power of science. I seek to demonstrate that scientism is intellectually impoverishing and politically dangerous. Given the lack of full-length studies on the subject, I trace the development of scientism …

"Chromatic Fantasy Sonata" By Davide Brubeck, Vasil Atanasov Cvetkov Jan 2010

"Chromatic Fantasy Sonata" By Davide Brubeck, Vasil Atanasov Cvetkov

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Dave Brubeck (b. 1920) is best known as a jazz composer, pianist, and bandleader, but he has also composed dozens of works that reach beyond the realm of jazz. His Chromatic Fantasy Sonata represents a milestone in his compositional activity, artfully fusing elements from European art music and the American jazz idiom. The work's subtitle ("inspired by J. S. Bach") makes clear the influence of the Baroque master, but gives no hint of the thoroughgoing jazz influences Brubeck also included in the piece. The Chromatic Fantasy Sonata was originally commissioned in 1988 by the chamber group An die Musik (oboe, …

Monstrous Bodies: Femininity And Agency In Young Adult Horror Fiction, June Pulliam Jan 2010

Monstrous Bodies: Femininity And Agency In Young Adult Horror Fiction, June Pulliam

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Young Adult horror fiction with female protagonists presents sympathetically the untenable situation of adolescent girls within society whereby they are increasingly pressured to embody a doll-like feminine ideal that deprives them of voice and agency. In Young Adult horror fiction, the monstrous Other problematizes what is presented to girls as “normal” and “natural” feminine behavior. As a double with a difference, the monstrous Other is an iteration of femininity whose similarity to the original implies the possibility of resisting restrictive gender roles. Because in Young Adult horror fiction the monstrous Other is nearly always a sympathetic character, it is fairly …

In The Shadow Of Josephinism: Austria And The Catholic Church In The Restoration, 1815-1848, Scott M. Berg Jan 2010

In The Shadow Of Josephinism: Austria And The Catholic Church In The Restoration, 1815-1848, Scott M. Berg

LSU Master's Theses

In the 1780s, Emperor Joseph II implemented reforms of the Catholic Church in Austria. By the time of his death in 1790, Joseph had cut off the Austrian Church from Rome, dissolved one-third of the monasteries in the Habsburg Empire, made marriage a state matter, granted toleration to Protestants, controlled clerical education, and restricted many religious activities. After the French Revolution and Napoleonic Wars (1789-1815), Europe retreated toward conservatism, and reform in Austria ended. Yet most of the religious changes in the 1780s, aptly labeled Josephinism, remained in the Austrian Church. This thesis will examine the persistence of Josephinism in …

Principals' Perceptions Of Meeting Vision And Collaboration Standards In Alternative Schools, Perry Dicarlo Jan 2010

Principals' Perceptions Of Meeting Vision And Collaboration Standards In Alternative Schools, Perry Dicarlo

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The present research was designed to address principals’ perceptions of meeting vision and collaboration standards in alternative schools. A multiple case study was used to accomplish the goals of this study. The objective and questions of this research pertains to school leaders’ behavior, knowledge, and performance within the context of a school leadership situation. Ecological theory framed this study as it refers to a student’s life within and outside of the school walls. The six research questions were formed and the basis of this exploration of two alternative school principals and contributes to an eventual portrait of the importance of …

The Rise Of The Surgical Age In The Treatment Of Pulmonary Tuberculosis: A Case Study Of The Mississippi State Sanatorium, Ashley Baggett Jan 2010

The Rise Of The Surgical Age In The Treatment Of Pulmonary Tuberculosis: A Case Study Of The Mississippi State Sanatorium, Ashley Baggett

LSU Master's Theses

The historiography of tuberculosis, “TB,” covers four periods in the United States. During the Victorian Age, TB was classified as consumption. After Robert Koch’s discovery of the tubercle bacillus in the 1882, the germ theory took precedence. The early 1900s saw the rise of the Sanatorium Age, and finally, the antibiotic revolution of the 1940s and 1950s began the current understanding of the disease. Missing from this periodization is an era in which surgery took precedence as the preferred treatment for tuberculosis. This study corrects the historiography by arguing for a recognizable Surgical Age in the 1930s and 1940s. With …

Christian Community And The Development Of An Americo-Liberian Identity, 1824-1878, Andrew N. Wegmann Jan 2010

Christian Community And The Development Of An Americo-Liberian Identity, 1824-1878, Andrew N. Wegmann

LSU Master's Theses

By the mid-nineteenth century, two separate visions of civilization and Christianity existed in Liberia. On the one hand, the settlers – the emigrants sent from the United States to Liberia by the American Colonization Society starting in 1822 – worshiped the external appearance of a Christian mind and “civilized” western body. They revered those citizens who spoke the best American English, lived in the grandest wood-framed houses, and wore the best American clothes. They required total indoctrination of natives into the “religion of the tall hat and frock coat” to maintain a stable, “civilized” American society. On the other hand, …

Framing Jewell: A Discourse Analysis Of Newspaper Coverage In The Aftermath Of The Atlanta Olympics Bombing And Discussion Of Legal And Ethical Standards For Such Practices, Anne L. Songy Jan 2010

Framing Jewell: A Discourse Analysis Of Newspaper Coverage In The Aftermath Of The Atlanta Olympics Bombing And Discussion Of Legal And Ethical Standards For Such Practices, Anne L. Songy

LSU Master's Theses

This study examines the newspaper coverage of Richard Jewell during the weeks after the 1996 Atlanta Olympics bombing. Jewell, a security guard working in the Olympic Park on July 27, 1996, was initially hailed as a hero due to his discovery of a bomb minutes before the explosion. After Jewell’s name was leaked to the press as an FBI person of interest in the case, many reporters began to frame Jewell in a negative light and, in some instances, even implied his guilt. Through a discourse analysis of news stories published between the date of the bombing and the date …

The Poisonous Wine From Catalonia: Rebellion In Spanish Louisiana During The Ulloa, O'Reilly, And Carondelet Administrations, Timothy Paul Achee Jan 2010

The Poisonous Wine From Catalonia: Rebellion In Spanish Louisiana During The Ulloa, O'Reilly, And Carondelet Administrations, Timothy Paul Achee

LSU Master's Theses

Spanish rule in Louisiana was bracketed by periods of unrest. Using the criteria for rebellion developed by political scientist Claude E. Welch Jr., in Anatomy of Rebellion to compare the 1768 rebellion under Governor Antonio de Ulloa, and demonstrations of discontent in the 1790’s under Baron Francisco Luis Carondelet, one is able to draw out similarities, contrasts, and continuities in factors causal to political unrest. The most powerful of these causal factors were the economic troubles, geographic marginality, ethnic tensions, weak authority, and unsuccessful attempts to reform the colony’s commercial system. Methods employed by the Spanish administrations to contain or …

The Relationship Between Social Skills And Challenging Behaviors In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Jonathan Wilkins Jan 2010

The Relationship Between Social Skills And Challenging Behaviors In Children With Autism Spectrum Disorders, Jonathan Wilkins

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

The autism spectrum disorders (ASD) are among the most serious and debilitating conditions with onset in early childhood. Deficits in social interaction skills are considered to be the hallmark set of symptoms and are given the most weight in current diagnostic systems. Although not considered among the core symptoms of ASD, challenging behaviors in the form of physical aggression, property destruction, and self-injury also commonly occur. Challenging behaviors of this nature are a salient feature of ASD because of their potential to cause harm to self and others as well as limit a child’s access to opportunities in community and …

Creencias Y Actitudes Populares Hacia La Mezcla Del Español Y El Inglés (Popular Attitudes And Beliefs Towards The Mixing Of Spanish And English), Sarah Ward Sullivan Jan 2010

Creencias Y Actitudes Populares Hacia La Mezcla Del Español Y El Inglés (Popular Attitudes And Beliefs Towards The Mixing Of Spanish And English), Sarah Ward Sullivan

LSU Master's Theses

This thesis presents an investigation of the attitudes upheld by a diverse group of informants towards the word Spanglish and the combination of Spanish and English in speech. A comparison is made of positive and negative attitudes regarding these two concepts along with an analysis of factors that condition these attitudes. The opinions of code mixing examined in this study were obtained through a survey, which was distributed to a group of 183 participants including bilingual speakers of Spanish and English (categorized by their native language) and monolingual English speakers. Through the employ of the statistical program, Goldvarb, five independent …

The State Of Education In Louisiana: Trend Analyses Of Student Achievement, Student Matriculation, And Student Behavior In The Accountability Era, Jonathon Anthony Szymanski Jan 2010

The State Of Education In Louisiana: Trend Analyses Of Student Achievement, Student Matriculation, And Student Behavior In The Accountability Era, Jonathon Anthony Szymanski

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Public education has long been the subject of public discontent. Historical events such as the Soviet launch of Sputnik in 1957, the Civil Rights Movement of the 1950s and 1960s, and repeated media reports that U.S. students were outscored by students in many other countries on international tests each prompted federal and state legislation aimed to reform public education. Following a presentation of the relative standing of the United States on three international tests, the history of public schooling in six states, Texas, North Carolina, Kentucky, Maryland, Florida, and Louisiana, is discussed. The central focus of the study is student …

Jennifer Higdon's Oboe Concerto: The Composition, Transformation, And A Performer's Analysis, Janice Elizabeth Crews Jan 2010

Jennifer Higdon's Oboe Concerto: The Composition, Transformation, And A Performer's Analysis, Janice Elizabeth Crews

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This monograph presents a formal examination of Jennifer Higdon’s Oboe Concerto in its various forms. Jennifer Higdon has garnered international success, yet few in-depth studies of her music exist. In this document, personal accounts from commissioners illustrate the unusual commission of Oboe Concerto. Likewise, the composer, a conductor, and soloists for premiere performances highlight unique aspects of the concerto, particularly its unusual form, multiple versions, and the potential challenges in preparing the work. Higdon’s concerto showcases the lyrical capabilities of the oboe, with an emphasis on melody and sustained tone. The transformation of the concerto illustrates Higdon’s skills of self-promotion, …

More Than Words, More Than Wounds: (Re)Writing 'Wounded' Women And Healing Pedagogies, Rachel Nicole Spear Jan 2010

More Than Words, More Than Wounds: (Re)Writing 'Wounded' Women And Healing Pedagogies, Rachel Nicole Spear

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

This project reconceptualizes how women and their personal stories of trauma have been read and represented in literary, feminist, and pedagogical studies, asserting that these authors and their texts should be recognized respectively as wounded healers and healing narratives. By situating my study within links among trauma, women, and writing, I argue that women and their personal stories of trauma exist in marginal, or rather, wounded positions. I problematize scholarship where links among these three commonly emerge (namely psychoanalytic, autobiographical, and feminist fields) to challenge monolithic readings and re-write these women and texts as more than wounded. More than Words, …

Extraversion And Oral Proficiency In Esl, Joshua Boyd Howard Jan 2010

Extraversion And Oral Proficiency In Esl, Joshua Boyd Howard

LSU Master's Theses

Extraversion has been proposed as an influence on the success of a second language learner, although studies in this area have produced mixed results (Dewaele & Furnham, 1999; Marin-Marin, 2005; Wakamoto, 2007). Through a narrative retell task, the current study investigated the effects of extraversion on the spoken English performance of 25 native speakers of Spanish. Extraversion was measured with a Spanish version of the Eysenck Personality Questionnaire or EPQ (1975). Narratives were elicited using the wordless picture story Frog, Where Are You? (Mayer, 1969). Drawing on the work of Dewaele (1998), Dewaele and Pavlenko (2002), and Oya, Manalo, and …

Prejudice And The New Latino Migration: The Geographic Locus Of Anti-Latino Sentiment, Angela Caraway Jan 2010

Prejudice And The New Latino Migration: The Geographic Locus Of Anti-Latino Sentiment, Angela Caraway

LSU Master's Theses

A large body of literature on the relationship between prejudice and discrimination and the size of minority populations suggests that as a minority population increases so will incidents of prejudice and/or discrimination. This school of thought is led by Hubert Blalock who contends that large minority populations generate prejudice among the majority, who view the minority as a threat to their economic and/or political standing. Minority population size has been tested and widely confirmed as a cause of anti-black prejudice and discrimination. But the corresponding research for Latinos has generally produced inconsistent and largely inconclusive findings. The reason for this …

The Power Struggle Between Americans And Creoles In The First Half Of The Nineteenth Century And Its Influence On The Architecture Of New Orleans, Sylvia Starns Mince Jan 2010

The Power Struggle Between Americans And Creoles In The First Half Of The Nineteenth Century And Its Influence On The Architecture Of New Orleans, Sylvia Starns Mince

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

In the first half of the nineteenth century the house types of the landscape and the footprint of New Orleans changed dramatically. Many of the changes can be attributed to the influx of the refugees from Saint Domingue and the Americans who immigrated from the North and the East Coast of the United States. Both sets of influxes reflect the impact of these two immigrant groups on the previously existing power structures in economics, politics, and society of the city. While the refugees from Saint Domingue more or less assimilated into the city, and in doing so, achieved power over …

"You Can Never Convert The Free Sons Of The Soil Into Vassals": Judah P. Benjamin And The Threat Of Union, 1852-1861, Geoffrey David Cunningham Jan 2010

"You Can Never Convert The Free Sons Of The Soil Into Vassals": Judah P. Benjamin And The Threat Of Union, 1852-1861, Geoffrey David Cunningham

LSU Master's Theses

As one of the premier legal minds in the Senate, having twice declined presidential nominations to the Supreme Court, Judah Benjamin’s rhetoric contains the South’s most sophisticated and clear-minded legal expositions on constitutional theory, state sovereignty, and republican government since the writings of John C. Calhoun. A well-known moderate, Benjamin’s national political career also reveals the effect of extremism on his own political thinking, while offering a limited perspective into the shifting attitude of the Deep South as well. Benjamin’s judicious speeches counseled northerners that southern views of liberty and sovereignty were inexplicably linked to slavery. With measured rhetoric Benjamin …

Establishment': A Core Concept In Chinese Inbound Income Taxation, Wei Cui Jan 2010

Establishment': A Core Concept In Chinese Inbound Income Taxation, Wei Cui

All Faculty Publications

Analogous with the concept of a US "trade or business" in US federal income tax law, the concept of "establishment" under Chinese tax law determines the boundary between net-income and gross-income taxation of inbound investments. As central as the concept is, it has received surprisingly little interpretation. As China increasingly opens to foreign portfolio investment and makes new non-corporate business forms available to foreigners, the term is urgently in need of clarification. This Article describes the recent regulatory and commercial developments in China that may rekindle interest in elaborating the meaning of "establishment." It then discusses the interpretations that have …

An Overview Of The Choral Music Of Michael Mcglynn With A Conductor's Preparatory Guide To His Celtic Mass, Karen Marrolli Jan 2010

An Overview Of The Choral Music Of Michael Mcglynn With A Conductor's Preparatory Guide To His Celtic Mass, Karen Marrolli

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Michael McGlynn, Irish composer and director of the choral group Anúna, is a fresh and engaging voice in the world of choral music. This paper delves into the sacred and secular works of Michael McGlynn to yield a clearer understanding of the style of this unique composer and the performance issues inherent in McGlynn’s Celtic Mass, an extended work for chorus, strings, harp, and percussion. Correspondence with the composer and examination of a representative cross section of his works revealed a number of influences, from Medieval music to the traditional music of McGlynn’s Irish homeland. McGlynn’s compositions range from chant …

A Few Steps Forward In The Process Of Looking Back: Setting Parameters For A Self-Study Of Administrative And Program Development Work Over 18 Years, Deborah Roose Jan 2010

A Few Steps Forward In The Process Of Looking Back: Setting Parameters For A Self-Study Of Administrative And Program Development Work Over 18 Years, Deborah Roose

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

Most self-studies focus on an individual or several teacher educators. Although there have been self-studies undertaken by teacher education administrators, there is relatively little research available that focuses specifically on administrator’s program development work in teacher education. This self-study examines one teacher education administrator’s program development work over a period of 18 years and in two institutions. Data comes from entries from a professional journal/log kept during those years. A framework consisting of emergent categories and sub-categories was developed for analysis. Initial findings suggest there is a complexity of and multiple roles that are influenced by outside forces. In terms …

Testing Virginity In Achilles Tatius And Heliodorus, Kirk Ormand Jan 2010

Testing Virginity In Achilles Tatius And Heliodorus, Kirk Ormand

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

In the Greek Romances by Achilles Tatius (Leucippe and Clitophon) and Heliodorus (An Ethiopian Tale), the virginity of the central heroine is not only central, but curiously problematized. In this article I explore the ways that these two novelists construct the plot of Romance around the tension between the heroine's physical integrity, and the reader's desire to know about her sexual experience. Both authors display considerable cunning in maintaining this tension, ultimately defining virginity as a state which can never be fully known, except in the moment of its loss.
