Risking Returns: Moving From Public To Private Equity, Aurobindo Ghosh Jan 2010

Risking Returns: Moving From Public To Private Equity, Aurobindo Ghosh

Research Collection School Of Economics

The notion of risk identifies a project that matches with the risk appetite of an entrepreneur not necessarily the investors. This can explain why entrepreneurs would start up companies but it cannot explain why ex-post the investors continue, given that a diversified portfolio of publicly traded assets could potentially generate similar return with lower risk. We re-evaluate the evidence through performance measures using relative probability distributions of public and private equity funds, and identify the nature of the deviations. We observe that the heterogeneity in different investor classes are greatly reduced using standard covariates to identify the choice between public …

Managing Female Foreign Domestic Workers In Singapore: Economic Pragmatism, Coercive Legal Regulation, Or Human Rights, Eugene K. B. Tan Jan 2010

Managing Female Foreign Domestic Workers In Singapore: Economic Pragmatism, Coercive Legal Regulation, Or Human Rights, Eugene K. B. Tan

Research Collection Yong Pung How School Of Law

Singapore's immigration discourse is deeply influenced by its need to “right-size” its population. As a society that has and remains in need of immigration, contemporary immigration and globalization have rigorously challenged the conventional thinking and understanding of citizenship, as well as notions of who belongs and who does not. Nevertheless, international marriages and pervasive in-and out-migration for purposes of employment, study, and family, conspire to make more pronounced the decoupling of citizenship and residence in Singapore. This transnational dimension sits uncomfortably with the policy makers' desire for, and the imperatives of, state sovereignty, control, and jurisdiction.Although one quarter of people …

Breaking Bad News: Effect Of Physician Communication On Analog Patients' Response, Emily Porensky Jan 2010

Breaking Bad News: Effect Of Physician Communication On Analog Patients' Response, Emily Porensky

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Breaking bad news is a difficult, yet unavoidable part of healthcare for physicians and patients alike. Although expert opinion suggests that certain strategies for breaking bad news may be better than others, there is little methodologically rigorous research to support current guidelines. This study used an experimental paradigm to test two communication strategies, forecasting bad news and framing prognostic information, when giving people a life-limiting diagnosis of colon cancer. Videotapes depicted a physician disclosing a diagnosis of cancer and discussing prognosis. Participants: N = 128) were asked to imagine they were going to see a doctor for physical symptoms they …

Parties, Committees, And Rules In The U.S. House Of Representatives, Hong Min Park Jan 2010

Parties, Committees, And Rules In The U.S. House Of Representatives, Hong Min Park

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation project aims to build upon the literature of positive theories of legislative politics, and provide three more nuanced stories about various stages in the U.S. House of Representatives: rules making, committee composition, and floor voting. The chapter, Conditional Nature of Rules Changes, examines why the U.S. House of Representatives has changed its standing rules regarding the principle of majority rule and minority rights. I begin by taking a critical look at previous studies on this subject, after which I propose an alternative theory on the conditional nature of rules changes. The empirical findings reveal that different combinations of …

Enhancing Nonlinear Ultrasonic Methods For Laboratory And Clinical Applications, Christopher Lloyd Jan 2010

Enhancing Nonlinear Ultrasonic Methods For Laboratory And Clinical Applications, Christopher Lloyd

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This thesis addresses the underlying physics associated with nonlinear ultrasonic field propagation, measurements of the nonlinear properties of materials, and mechanisms contributing to the observed systematic variation of backscattered ultrasonic energy from the heart over the heart cycle. Studies were performed to address the reliability of the methods of measurement used for the quantitative characterization of nonlinear phenomena and to explore the utility of these methods. This thesis examines the measurement of nonlinear acoustic properties of materials using several methods, including the transmission of ultrasound through the material, as well as the backscattered signal from a region of interest within …

Culture And Exchange: The Jews Of Königsberg, 1700-1820, Jill Storm Jan 2010

Culture And Exchange: The Jews Of Königsberg, 1700-1820, Jill Storm

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation traces the history of the Jewish community in Königsberg, East Prussia, from its founding in 1700 to the aftermath of the Prussian Emancipation Edict of 1812, as well as the early stages of Jewish embourgeoisement and political integration. My project combines aspects of a traditional communal history with newer trends in Jewish history, including an integrated discussion of economic and cultural life. I argue that the commercial successes of the Jewish mercantile elite in Königsberg, in particular of the Friedländer family, set the stage for the publication of ha-Measef and the local flowering of the haskalah. Moreover, I …

Essays In Corporate Finance, Kangzhen Xie Jan 2010

Essays In Corporate Finance, Kangzhen Xie

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This dissertation studies the effects of information asymmetry, financial constraints and stock market valuation on the behavior of firms. The first essay explores the role of deal initiation and bidder asymmetry in determining the use of auction and target premia in merges and acquisitions. The second essay examines the behavior of the segments of conglomerates and single segment firms in the distressed industries. The third essay investigates the incentive of takeover arising from the temporary disparity of stock valuation. While half of all acquisition targets are sold in negotiated deals with only one buyer rather than by auction, the wealth …

Modeling Aerial Refueling Operations, Allen Mccoy Jan 2010

Modeling Aerial Refueling Operations, Allen Mccoy

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Aerial Refueling: AR) is the act of offloading fuel from one aircraft: the tanker) to another aircraft: the receiver) in mid flight. Meetings between tanker and receiver aircraft are referred to as AR events and are scheduled to: escort one or more receivers across a large body of water; refuel one or more receivers; or train receiver pilots, tanker pilots, and boom operators. In order to efficiently execute the Aerial Refueling Mission, the Air Mobility Command: AMC) of the United States Air Force: USAF) depends on computer models to help it make tanker basing decisions, plan tanker sorties, schedule aircraft, …

The Design And Implementation Of An Extensible Brain-Computer Interface, Scott Burns Jan 2010

The Design And Implementation Of An Extensible Brain-Computer Interface, Scott Burns

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

An implantable brain computer interface: BCI) includes tissue interface hardware, signal conditioning circuitry, analog-to-digital conversion: ADC) circuitry and some sort of computing hardware to discriminate desired waveforms from noise. Within an experimental paradigm the tissue interface and ADC hardware will rarely change. Recent literature suggests it is often the specific implementation of waveform discrimination that can limit the usefulness and lifespan of a particular BCI design. If the discrimination techniques are implemented in on-board software, experimenters gain a level of flexibility not currently available in published designs. To this end, I have developed a firmware library to acquire data sampled …

Piezoelectric Control Of Structures Prone To Instabilities, Sunjung Kim Jan 2010

Piezoelectric Control Of Structures Prone To Instabilities, Sunjung Kim

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Thin-walled structures such as stiffened panels fabricated out of high strength materials are ubiquitous in aerospace structures. These are prone to buckle in a variety of modes with strong possibility of adverse interaction under axial compression and/or bending. Optimally designed stiffened panels, at an appropriate combination of axial compression and suddenly applied lateral pressure undergo large amplitude oscillations and may experience divergence. Under aerodynamic loading, they can experience flutter instability with the amplitudes of oscillations attaining a limit: LCO) or escalating without any limit. Control of structures prone to these forms of instability using piezo-electric actuators is the theme of …

Proteomics Assisted Discovery Of Novel Proteins In Assembly And Regulation Of Photosystem Ii, Kimberly Wegener Jan 2010

Proteomics Assisted Discovery Of Novel Proteins In Assembly And Regulation Of Photosystem Ii, Kimberly Wegener

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Cyanobacteria, the only prokaryotes capable of oxygenic photosynthesis, are present in diverse ecological niches and play crucial roles in global carbon and nitrogen cycles. To proliferate in nature, cyanobacteria utilize a host of stress responses to maintain photosynthesis under periodic changes in environmental conditions. Recent advances in proteomic study have enabled a systems-level analysis of cellular functions in many systems. Because proteins are directly responsible for cellular functions, measurements of protein abundances provide significant clues to the modulation of cellular functions during different environmental perturbations. A detailed knowledge of the composition of, as well as the dynamic changes in, the …

Transient-State Kinetic Studies Of The Mechanisms Of Dna Unwinding And Translocation Of The E. Coli Recbc And Recbcd Helicases, Colin Wu

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This thesis presents mechanistic studies of the E. coli RecBC and RecBCD helicases using transient-state kinetic approaches to understand the relationship between DNA unwinding and ssDNA translocation. RecBC initiates unwinding from duplex DNA ends with pre-existing 5'-(dT)6 and 3'-(dT)6 ssDNA tails using a series of repeated rate-limiting steps with a rate of 345 ┬▒ 8 bp/sec and an average kinetic step-size of ~4 bp: 20 mM Mops-KOH, pH 7.0 at 25°C, 30 mM NaCl, 10 mM MgCl2, 5% glycerol, 1 mM 2-mercaptoethanol) while RecBCD unwinds these same DNA substrates with a rate of 745 ┬▒ 18 bp/sec using a more …

The Politics Of Constitutional Review: Evidence From The European Court Of Justice, Michael Malecki Jan 2010

The Politics Of Constitutional Review: Evidence From The European Court Of Justice, Michael Malecki

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Judges who perform judicial review have the extraordinary power to strike down laws that do not conform to their own policy preferences. Their political independence is generally regarded as a normative good. In this work, I consider the microfoundations of judicial preferences and how those preferences interact with institutional independence to determine the policy impact of judicial review. The following argument is developed in the context of the Court of Justice of the European Union: European Court of Justice, or ECJ). Constitutional Courts generally and the ECJ in particular are considered "independent" when they enjoy discretion to act counter to …

Give Me Your Engineers, Your Ph.D.S, Yearning To Fund My Welfare State. Fiscal Crises And High-Skilled Immigration Policies, Mariana Medina Garciadiego Jan 2010

Give Me Your Engineers, Your Ph.D.S, Yearning To Fund My Welfare State. Fiscal Crises And High-Skilled Immigration Policies, Mariana Medina Garciadiego

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Points systems, immigration policies in which potential immigrants make an application to enter the country and then are selected on the basis of their skills, age, and occupation, have been proven to be more successful attracting high-skilled immigrants, but very few countries have implemented them. This is particularly paradoxical since high-skilled immigrants are more beneficial in fiscal terms: they are expected to pay more taxes than low skilled immgirants, and not depend heavily on government provided welfare. My core argument is that left of center governments in liberal welfare states implement points systems during a fiscal crisis as a mean …

Statistical Design And Imaging Of Position-Encoded 3d Microarrays, Pinaki Sarder Jan 2010

Statistical Design And Imaging Of Position-Encoded 3d Microarrays, Pinaki Sarder

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

We propose a three-dimensional microarray device with microspheres having controllable positions for error-free target identification. Here targets: such as mRNAs, proteins, antibodies, and cells) are captured by the microspheres on one side, and are tagged by nanospheres embedded with quantum-dots: QDs) on the other. We use the lights emitted by these QDs to quantify the target concentrations. The imaging is performed using a fluorescence microscope and a sensor. We conduct a statistical design analysis to select the optimal distance between the microspheres as well as the optimal temperature. Our design simplifies the imaging and ensures a desired statistical performance for …

Arsenic Removal From Drinking Water By Electrocoagulation, Wei Wan Jan 2010

Arsenic Removal From Drinking Water By Electrocoagulation, Wei Wan

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Exposure to arsenic through drinking water poses a threat to human health. Electrocoagulation is an emerging water treatment technology that involves electrolytic oxidation of anode materials and in-situ generation of coagulant. Electrocoagulation is an alternative to using chemical coagulants for arsenic removal and thus is beneficial for communities with better access to electricity than to chemicals.

Typical Pm Targets Are Not Typically Better Than Atypical Pm Targets: Underlying Mechanisms Of Prospective Memory Retrieval, Ji Hae Lee Jan 2010

Typical Pm Targets Are Not Typically Better Than Atypical Pm Targets: Underlying Mechanisms Of Prospective Memory Retrieval, Ji Hae Lee

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In two experiments, predictions from the discrepancy-plus-search view: e.g., McDaniel & Einstein, 2000) were tested against predictions from the familiarity view: McDaniel, 1995) and the preparatory attentional and memory processes theory: PAM; Smith, 2003). Discrepancy was manipulated by mismatching the actual and the expected category typicality of PM targets while familiarity was manipulated by the category typicality of PM targets alone. Consistent with PAM’s prediction, higher PM performance with significant monitoring was found in the conditions where typical category exemplars served as nontargets. While the significant monitoring limited the opportunity for discrepancy to facilitate PM performance, further analyses hinted at …

Regulation Of Peripheral Nerve Regeneration By The Mtor Pathway, Namiko Abe Jan 2010

Regulation Of Peripheral Nerve Regeneration By The Mtor Pathway, Namiko Abe

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

While neurons in the central nervous system: CNS) have limited capacity for regrowth after damage, neurons in the peripheral nervous system: PNS) have a robust ability to regenerate their axons following injury. Successful regeneration depends upon both extrinsic cues in the environment and the activation of intrinsic mechanisms to promote regrowth. A number of inhibitory molecules in the CNS environment that prevent axonal regrowth have been identified, but less is known regarding the signaling mechanisms that regulate regenerative ability in PNS neurons. Here, we explored multiple components of injury signaling in the PNS, including the retrograde transport of local axonal …

Impossible Whiteness: Race, Gender, And American Identity In Early Twentieth-Century American Literature, Tarah Demant Jan 2010

Impossible Whiteness: Race, Gender, And American Identity In Early Twentieth-Century American Literature, Tarah Demant

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

In Impossible Whiteness, I reveal whiteness--though oftentimes still an implicit critical assumption of normalcy--as a complex, shifting category in the literature of early twentieth-century America, and show how gender, particularly, disrupts American whiteness. I deconstruct the various ways in which whiteness is defined legally, culturally, and in the marketplace, and demonstrate how Edith Wharton, Anzia Yezierska, and F. Scott Fitzgerald trace these standards of whiteness and the inevitable failure of such racial: and implicitly gendered) refinement. Though critical literature has been slow to consider the role of race for these authors, I reveal them as actively participating in contemporary dialogues …

Role Of The Ajuba Lim Proteins In Epithelial Growth Regulation, Meghna Das Thakur Jan 2010

Role Of The Ajuba Lim Proteins In Epithelial Growth Regulation, Meghna Das Thakur

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The mammalian Ajuba LIM proteins: Ajuba, LIMD1, WTIP) are cytosolic adapter proteins recruited to nascent epithelial adherens junctions, where they are thought to contribute to junctional assembly and/or stability. They also shuttle into the nucleus acting as corepressors of the Snail family of transcriptional repressors, thereby contributing to epithelial mesenchymal transition. As such they have the potential to communicate cell adhesive events with nuclear responses to remodel epithelia. Determining their role(s) in vivo, however, has been challenging due to shared interacting proteins, overlapping tissue expression and functional redundancy in cells. Thus, we turned to the Drosophila model system where a …

Synthesis Of Complex Plasmonic Nanostructures For Applications In Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy And Biomedicine, Claire Cobley Jan 2010

Synthesis Of Complex Plasmonic Nanostructures For Applications In Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy And Biomedicine, Claire Cobley

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This research centers around techniques to engineer the properties of noble-metal nanostructures for applications in surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy: SERS) and biomedicine. Many of these potential applications are made possible by the strong localized surface plasmon resonance: LSPR) of noble-metal nanostructures, which is heavily influenced by the particle's morphology. The first part of this work focuses on the solution-phase synthesis of Ag nanostructures. In this section, I demonstrate the synthesis of Ag nanostructures with two different morphologies that are interesting for fundamental SERS studies: anisotropically truncated octahedrons and large, single-crystalline spheres. In both syntheses, control over etching was critical to morphological …

Nmr Search For Mobile, Aluminum-Bearing Species During Reactions Of Sodium Alanate, Timothy Ivancic Jan 2010

Nmr Search For Mobile, Aluminum-Bearing Species During Reactions Of Sodium Alanate, Timothy Ivancic

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

NaAlH4 has become the archetypal complex: ionic-covalent) hydrogen storage solid, since the discovery in 1997 that titanium and some other metals catalyze the reaction in both directions. Given that spatially separated NaH and Al under excess H2 pressure can form NaAlH4, we have hypothesized a mobile Al- or Na- bearing intermediate species in the reaction scheme. 27Al in situ NMR has been used to discover such a new species during dehydriding of NaAlH4. Importantly, the new species can also be formed under excess H2 pressure without net evolution of Al and H2 …

Novel Algorithms For Structural Alignment Of Non-Coding Rnas, Diana Kolbe Jan 2010

Novel Algorithms For Structural Alignment Of Non-Coding Rnas, Diana Kolbe

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Non-coding RNAs are biologically important molecules, with a variety of catalytic and regulatory activities mediated by their secondary and tertiary structures. Base-pairing interactions, particularly at the secondary structure level, are an important tool for identifying and studying these structural RNAs, but also present some unique challenges for sequence analysis. Probabilistic covariance models are effective representations of structural RNAs, with generally high sensitivity and specificity but slow computational speed. New algorithms for dealing with structural RNAs are developed to address some of the practical deficiencies of covariance models. A new model of local alignment improves accuracy for fragmentary data, such as …

Magnetic Resonance Imaging And Surface-Based Analysis Techniques To Quantify Growth Of The Developing Brain, Andrew Knutsen Jan 2010

Magnetic Resonance Imaging And Surface-Based Analysis Techniques To Quantify Growth Of The Developing Brain, Andrew Knutsen

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Human brains, and those of most higher mammals, are gyrencephalic: folded) to accommodate a large cortical surface within the limited volume of the skull. Abnormal folding of the cerebral cortex in humans is associated with a number of neurological dysfunctions and diseases such as schizophrenia and Williams syndrome. To understand the mechanism of gyrification, and to illuminate the underlying causes of abnormal folding, objective, quantitative methods to characterize normal and abnormal development must be developed. The ferret is an excellent model in which to study the development of convolutions in the brain because folding occurs post-natally over a period of …

A Study Of Published Journal Articles On Brain-Based Learning From 1985 To 2009, Janece Shaffer Jan 2010

A Study Of Published Journal Articles On Brain-Based Learning From 1985 To 2009, Janece Shaffer

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

Educators are required to implement scientifically-based research interventions in their classrooms, but teachers and administrators may not be aware of the current laws and requirements of NCLB legislation. NCLB (2001) requires that educators implement research-based interventions. Brain-based learning programs have been implemented in classrooms throughout the country, even though the research base for such programs may be inadequate. This study presents the results of educational database searches for empirical studies involving brain-based or brain-compatible learning published in educational journals between 1985 and 2009. A total of 77 articles on brain-based learning were published during this time period but only 5 …
