Dictionary Of American Regional English: Some Transposals, Darryl Francis Nov 2010

Dictionary Of American Regional English: Some Transposals, Darryl Francis

Word Ways

When the American Dialect Society (ADS) was founded in 1889, one of the major goals of its charger members was to do for the United States what Joseph Wright was doing for England in compiling his English Dialect Dictionary. But of course the task of making a dictionary of the dialects of the United States was going to be a lot bigger because of the size of the country. So the Society began by publishing word lists made by professors who jotted down unfamiliar terms or expressions as they visited places new to them. For decades, lists were published …

Lewis In Storyland, Jim Puder Nov 2010

Lewis In Storyland, Jim Puder

Word Ways

It is the peculiar fate of a few celebrated authors, whose personalities as well as whose works fascinate us, to experience, posthumously, new literary careers as characters in other writers' fiction. Such an author is Charles Dodgson, better known to many as Lewis Carroll, whose first of a score of appearances as a character in fiction occurred about 70 years ago. hardcore Carroll devotees, of course, already know all about all such fictional "LC" apparitions, but more casual Carroll enthusiasts may thank Seattle writer N. Lee for compiling a list of eleven novels and one feature film in which Dodgson …

Acrostic Dictionary Of Wordplay Terms, A. Anil

Word Ways

A bunch of definitive reverse acrostics presented in February ('10-8) included seven wordplay terms, with especially fun ones for logology and logophile. I thought a rather immoderate list of wordplay terms similarly defined might be appreciated by logology fans. Read the definitions first. If they are not clear, then consult the examples, which are given as "answers" if needed.

Student Engagement Differences By Ethnicity And Scale For Ninth Grade Students, Melissa Mcfarland Fattor Nov 2010

Student Engagement Differences By Ethnicity And Scale For Ninth Grade Students, Melissa Mcfarland Fattor

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Differences on three subscales of student engagement were compared across ethnic groups and by subscale. The ninth grade is often considered a vital juncture that indicates success or failure to graduate high school. When a student goes through a transition he or she often experiences some type of change in student engagement levels and may experience adverse effects in the form of academic, social, and psychological challenges. Researchers of the National Research Council (2004) believe that the engagement process (the successful interaction between the individual and the educational context) is considered a means toward alleviating unsuccessful student outcomes. Therefore, this …

Universal Design In Technology Used In Interpreter Education, Daniel Roush Nov 2010

Universal Design In Technology Used In Interpreter Education, Daniel Roush

International Journal of Interpreter Education

Interpreter educators need to consider whether the educational technology they use is maximally accessible and usable. This paper discusses the application of universal design (UD) principles to educational technologies that have been adopted for use in interpreter education. Particularly, the focus is on the design of video annotation software features used in the assessment of interpretations. Some features currently being used meet minimal standards of accessibility but do not fully comply with principles of UD. This paper provides an overview of a pilot study of the development of prototype annotation features that would not only accommodate specialized needs for users …

Public Comprehension Of Published Data - Technology To The Rescue?, Paul Lorton Jr Nov 2010

Public Comprehension Of Published Data - Technology To The Rescue?, Paul Lorton Jr

Business Analytics and Information Systems

There is a need for the public to monitor the efficacy of what the public funds. This certainly was the view in 1989 when the voters of California passed Proposition 98 – the Classroom Instructional Improvement and Accountability Act.

Since the passage of Proposition 98, every public K-12 school in California has published and distributed a School Accountability Report Card (SARC) as hard copy sent home to the parents and, as the revised law compelled, made available on the internet.

Did the use of this technology (i.e., the internet and the infrastructure it requires) realize its purpose – to inform? …

Prelude, James Smith Allen Nov 2010

Prelude, James Smith Allen

A Privileged Past

Yes, "A Privileged Past" is an autobiography – and something more. Structured like a comic opera to evoke the sensuous sources of personal recollection, this book explores the interrelations of public and private memory.

Its narrative is based on the author’s experiences, of course, but also on those of his forebears and their descendants, set in six historical contexts: immigration, social mobility, cultural capital, individual agency, national identity, and public education. These circumstances have driven all Americans’ faith in self, family, and better times, perhaps as early as the arrival of European settlers in the 1600s.

Drawing on documentation such …

Impact Of Eu’S Decisions On Euro-Skepticism Of A Turkish Religious Peripheral Party, Felicity Party, Imdat Ozen Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

This study achieved a group of objectives including the measuring of the impact of the EU’s decisions on trust-based, nationalism-based, and religion-based Euro-skepticism, as well as Euro-skepticism in general, by conducting content analysis of statements made by some elite members of a peripheral Turkish religious party, the Felicity Party (Saadet Partisi, SP).The hypotheses were tested at two independent events (one on December 17, 2004 and the other on October 03, 2005). The data were collected from the pro-SP Milli Gazete. Each hypothesis was tested by using the two sample z-Test formula. The findings show that the two decisions by the …

Re-Seeing The Mighty: Critically Examining One Film's Representations Of Disability In The English Classroom, Joellen Maples, Katrina Arndt, Julia M. White Nov 2010

Re-Seeing The Mighty: Critically Examining One Film's Representations Of Disability In The English Classroom, Joellen Maples, Katrina Arndt, Julia M. White

Education Faculty/Staff Publications

Films portraying characters with disabilities are often shown in the English classroom. Films such as "Of Mice and Men," "Simon Birch," "To Kill a Mockingbird," "The Hunchback of Notre Dame," "The Glass Menagerie," "Moby Dick," "Gattaca," and "A Beautiful Mind" often show simplistic and stereotypical representations of characters and their disabilities. Although students are frequently encouraged to think critically about a film's structure, themes, or symbolic elements, the authors argue that they should also learn to examine critically the representations of disability in these films. If stereotypical representations of characters with disabilities are not identified and challenged, another generation of …

“Barbarous Custom Of Dueling”: Death And Honor On St. Louis’ Bloody Island, Mark Alan Neels

The Confluence (2009-2020)

Neels argues that the Army Corps of Engineers inadvertently dealt the final death blow to dueling in the region when it eliminated “Bloody Island,” a sandbar in the Mississippi River which became a favorite venue for duels.
