Max Weber On Property: An Effort In Interpretative Understanding, Laura R. Ford Jan 2010

Max Weber On Property: An Effort In Interpretative Understanding, Laura R. Ford

Socio-Legal Review

In this article, Laura Ford explores Max Weber's writings on the subject of property. Weber, in his first dissertation, articulated legally and historically, the conception of property as a phenomenon that was dependent on organised social relationships and somewhat closed to outside participation. Later, he formulated this conception sociologically and systematically connected it to additional concepts. Ford engages with Weber's work in three broad phases (the legal phase of his first dissertation, the economic-historical phase and finally the sociological phase) in order to examine if any sociological issues emerge from the same.

Imperative Values Of A Logical Forgiveness, Abhayraj Naik Jan 2010

Imperative Values Of A Logical Forgiveness, Abhayraj Naik

Socio-Legal Review

This article deals with the nuances of the concept of 'forgiveness' and its role in shaping law and societal institutions. In the background of Aurel Kolnai's notions on the act of forgiveness, the author analyses the different conceptualizations of forgiveness. The logical paradox of forgiveness as formulated by Kolnai is considered. The article argues that the notion of 'divine forgiveness' is not vulnerable to this paradox. Hence there is a need for interpersonal forgiveness to adopt some of the premises on which divine forgiveness is based on. The critical interrelations between the concepts of forgiveness, patience and trust and their …

The Divine Dilemma: The Development Of Puritan Thought Concerning Church And State In New England, 1630-1780., John Tyler Clemons

Honors Theses

As devout Calvinists, the Puritans’ first loyalty to their interpretation of the Bible put them at odds with the English Crown and the Anglican Church, which demanded obedience to religious and secular authority above all else. Unwilling to recant, the Puritans found themselves in a “divine dilemma” with two equally unacceptable options: continued persecution or open rebellion. The flight to New England temporarily solved the Puritans’ dilemma by removing them from the immediate reach of the king and his bishops. Upon their amval in Massachusetts, the Puritans began constructing a “City on a Hill,” a religiously homogenous society based upon …

The Ties That Bind: Social Bonds In Shakespeare's The Merchant Of Venice, Lillian Nicole Rogers Jan 2010

The Ties That Bind: Social Bonds In Shakespeare's The Merchant Of Venice, Lillian Nicole Rogers

Honors Theses

This thesis studies The Merchant of Venice with particular regards to the role of social bonds in the community of the play and in the actions of the characters. These bonds serve as ties that connect the characters to each other and also to the dominant social structure of their world—a structure that is patriarchal, class-based, and ostensibly Christian. The following chapters focus on four types of bonds that are especially vital to the play: those relating to law, gender, classes, and religion. These bonds manifest themselves in different areas of life, but they are all rooted in the workings …

Sidewalks Matter: A Transportation Policy Study And Plan For Sidewalks In Clinton, Ms, Elizabeth Jayne Joseph

Honors Theses

The primary goal for this thesis is to provide the necessary research and analysis about the importance of sidewalks for Clinton, Mississippi, so that the city will have a plan and a study to support the implementation of a comprehensive sidewalks construction project. Fitgerald's American Dream: It Happens To One, Not The Ninety-Nine, Cara Kathleen Troiani Jan 2010

Fitgerald's American Dream: It Happens To One, Not The Ninety-Nine, Cara Kathleen Troiani

Honors Theses

This thesis examines how F. Scott Fitzgerald portrays the American Dream in his fiction and how he establishes the inequality of the class system as the force which ruins the American Dream. Since we normally perceive America to be a land of opportunity and a land of equality, we often overlook the hierarchy of social classes in America. By describing the American elite’s aristocratic-like beliefs and behaviors and, in some works, transporting the wealthy Americans to Europe, Fitzgerald compares the social system in America to the rigid class structures of Europe. It is the European-like view of class in Fitzgerald’s …

Nature's Bastards: Hybridity, Grafting And Miscegenation In The Renaissance Imagery, Erin Elaine Doctor Jan 2010

Nature's Bastards: Hybridity, Grafting And Miscegenation In The Renaissance Imagery, Erin Elaine Doctor

Honors Theses

In this thesis I examined the various perceptions and permutations of hybridity in the context of a collective Renaissance imagination. The success of this thesis depends on the adherence to and analysis of a clear definition of hybridity, both real and metaphorical, as established in the introduction. Once this definition was established, I considered the implications of hybridity on a collection of Renaissance bodies, exemplified in the vegetable bodies of the garden and the social group of the gypsies. By using an extensive sample of primary sources, including plays, contemporaneous popular manuals and guidebooks, short stories, laws, edicts, paintings and …

Tennesse Williams' Web Of Deception In The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire And Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Holly Nicole Henning Jan 2010

Tennesse Williams' Web Of Deception In The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire And Cat On A Hot Tin Roof, Holly Nicole Henning

Honors Theses

While many themes appear in Tennessee Williams’ The Glass Menagerie, A Streetcar Named Desire and Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, the theme of deception emerges as one of the most prominent. To determine exactly how deceit impacts the lives of the characters in each play, an analysis of deception from both a psychological and philosophical standpoint is given. Based on the findings of this analysis, Williams effectively employs three general categories of deception in his plays, including deception with self-awareness, deception of others requiring deception of the self and self-deception regardless of another’s presence. Williams also implements one of …

This thesis examines the work of Assia Djebar in terms of its context, content, and objectives. To fully understand the function of her work and the significance of its content, the context in which Djebar writes is momentous. Outlining a brief history of the Algerian woman's experience gives a practical understanding of the individual and collective struggles of Algerian women. The violent and unique participation of women in the Algerian War of Independence and their subsequent insignificance under the patriarchal …

A Little Unwell: Madness In The World Of Tennessee Williams, Sarah Lynn Dickey

Honors Theses

Tennessee Williams is a prolific playwright and an American literary icon. He is second only to Shakespeare in the amount of scholarly analyses of his work. SEDERIA NATASHA GRAY: The Political Mobilization of Afro-Ecuadorians: A comparison to the United States and Brazil (Under the direction of Dr. Jeffrey Jackson)

In this thesis, I will use the theory of political mobilization in Brazil by Edward Telles. Telles argues that skin color, social class and residential concentration are the three main factors in politically mobilizing a community. When there is one, distinct race (skin color) and/ or social class political mobilization is high. Telles argues that skin color is an ethnic identity marker that causes political mobilization. In the case ofsocial class in Brazil, Telles argues that groups …
