Around, Alongside, Inside, And In-Between: The Geometries Of Performance In Contemporary U.S. Play And Film, Piotr A. Skuza Jan 2010

Around, Alongside, Inside, And In-Between: The Geometries Of Performance In Contemporary U.S. Play And Film, Piotr A. Skuza

Open Access Dissertations

Divided into four consecutive chapters, The Geometries of Performance is a study of how Don DeLillo's play Valparaiso and Barry Levinson's film production Wag the Dog both demonstrate and inform readers, spectators, and viewers, through the performative nature of both sources, about the intersections of Patricia Pisters's notion of "camera consciousness" and Roy Ascott's "network consciousness": how such intersections are formed, how they emerge and operate in the contexts of modern technologies of perception, and how they affect contemporary audience. In chapter 1, "Valparaiso: Möbius Strip I or, In the Regime of Monads (Tell us everything')," I study Don DeLillo's …

The Drift: Rethinking The Affective Dynamics Of Adaptation, John Hodgkins Jan 2010

The Drift: Rethinking The Affective Dynamics Of Adaptation, John Hodgkins

Open Access Dissertations

The Drift effects a deeper understanding of the dynamic relationship between literature and cinema by articulating an "affective turn" for adaptation studies, a field whose traditional focus has been the critical castigation of filmic adaptations based on canonical plays or novels. Specifically, this project draws on theorists such as Gilles Deleuze, Brian Massumi, and Marco Abel to re-conceive literary and cinematic texts as spatio-temporal engines generating and disseminating affect, and the adaptive process as a drifting of those intensities from one medium to another. By conceptualizing adaptation in this manner, this study steers clear of the chimerical notion of fidelity …

Cambodian And Laotian Americans' Cultural Values And Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Services, Manivone Thikeo Jan 2010

Cambodian And Laotian Americans' Cultural Values And Attitudes Toward Seeking Professional Psychological Services, Manivone Thikeo

Open Access Dissertations

Several studies have reported that Asian Americans, including Cambodian and Laotian Americans, tend to under utilize mental health services, both inpatient and outpatient although they display high levels of psychological problems related to significant psychological trauma experienced in their native land or while living in refugee camps. Underutilization may not be related to the lack of need but it may relate to cultural factors such as shame and stigma as well as acculturation and lack of health insurance. Although some Asian American research about help seeking exists, no previous research has specifically addressed this question with a Cambodian and Laotian …

An Expectancy Theory Analysis Of Catch Shares: Identifying Outcomes, Preferences, And Potential Co-Management Changes In New England Groundfish Management, William D. Whitmore Jan 2010

An Expectancy Theory Analysis Of Catch Shares: Identifying Outcomes, Preferences, And Potential Co-Management Changes In New England Groundfish Management, William D. Whitmore

Open Access Dissertations

Catch shares have been implemented through a variety of limited access privilege programs, including individual transferable quotas (ITQs) and co-operatives. The New England Fishery Management Council recently approved 19 fishing cooperatives, referred to as sectors, in Amendment 16 to the Northeast Multispecies Fishery Management Plan. Despite requests by fishing industry members to consider an ITQ program in Amendment 16, a referendum requirement in the Magnuson Stevens Fishery Conservation and Management Act and time constraints for implementing Amendment 16 were cited as reasons ITQs were not considered for Amendment 16. A mail survey was used to compare different outcomes fishermen and …

Flight Of The Mind: Reading Virginia Woolf Reading, Maria Chiancola Glade Jan 2010

Flight Of The Mind: Reading Virginia Woolf Reading, Maria Chiancola Glade

Open Access Dissertations

Virginia Woolf was always a voracious reader, and the act of reading was for her both labor and pleasure, both an act of understanding and an act of production, and it was always already entangled with the act of writing. A record of her notes taken while reading exists, though unpublished and understudied, and these notebooks offer Woolf scholars access into the mind of the author at the moment of creative inception. Arguably, the extant sixty-seven notebooks, available at the Sussex University Library and the New York City Library's Berg Collection, offer a vast collection of material and a rich …

Taking Stock Of The Warehouse Cooperative School: A Personal Inventory Of The Formation Of Adolescent Subjectivity In The Context Of 1970s Alternative Education, Theo Greenblatt Jan 2010

Taking Stock Of The Warehouse Cooperative School: A Personal Inventory Of The Formation Of Adolescent Subjectivity In The Context Of 1970s Alternative Education, Theo Greenblatt

Open Access Dissertations

Constructed according the conventions of a subgenre the author defines as "formation text," this creative non-fiction work is an experiment in form that addresses the experimental coming of age of a subject within an experimental era and within the more specific context of an experimental education. Playing off the name of a school the author attended in the 1970s, The Warehouse Cooperative School, its structure employs a series of lists, both organizationally--as a textual version of inventorying, and as metaphor for storage and retrieval of memory. As an overt challenge to the bildungsroman, and its unacknowledged influence on contemporary memoir, …

Inside Writing Assessment: One Faculty's Collective Engagement & Active Critique Within Departmental Course Outcomes, Valerie A. Vancza Jan 2010

Inside Writing Assessment: One Faculty's Collective Engagement & Active Critique Within Departmental Course Outcomes, Valerie A. Vancza

Open Access Dissertations

Scholars in the field of rhetoric and composition are still only beginning to grasp the need for crucial examination of writing assessment as a locally-constructed, fully collaborative and necessary professional research activity. In particular, few assessment scholars have examined the attitudes of writing assessors in a full-scale course outcomes assessment--or even acknowledged the importance of their viewpoints and interpretations in such an assessment. This study investigated the attitudes, definitions, and self-perceptions of writing instructors fully engaged in assessing writing course outcomes. Empirical models for observation, survey, and interview were applied to fully gather, analyze, and triangulate data collected from writing …

Experimental Study Of Organocatalyzed Homodimerization Reactions Of α,β-Unsaturated Enones, Vanina Valeria Guidi Jan 2010

Experimental Study Of Organocatalyzed Homodimerization Reactions Of α,β-Unsaturated Enones, Vanina Valeria Guidi

Open Access Dissertations

This Thesis intends to elucidate the mechanism involved in a self condensation (Homodimerization) transformation of α, β-unsaturated ketones through the formation of a key enamine intermediate that arises as a consequence of the presence of an organocatalyst. The organocatyst utilized in this research is L-Proline, a natural occurring aminoacid. While the mechanism of the L-Proline organocatalyzed self-condensation reaction of α, β-unsaturated enals appears to proceed through an imine addition mechanism (Double Michael Addition), the analogous reaction pathway for Homodimerization of α, β-unsaturated enones has been postulated to proceed via a Diels-Alder reaction. This Thesis work is significant as the elucidation …

The Politics Of Constitutional Review: Evidence From The European Court Of Justice, Michael Malecki Jan 2010

The Politics Of Constitutional Review: Evidence From The European Court Of Justice, Michael Malecki

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Judges who perform judicial review have the extraordinary power to strike down laws that do not conform to their own policy preferences. Their political independence is generally regarded as a normative good. In this work, I consider the microfoundations of judicial preferences and how those preferences interact with institutional independence to determine the policy impact of judicial review. The following argument is developed in the context of the Court of Justice of the European Union: European Court of Justice, or ECJ). Constitutional Courts generally and the ECJ in particular are considered "independent" when they enjoy discretion to act counter to …

The Role Of Aerobic Glycolysis In The Resting Human Brain, Sanjeev Vaishnavi Jan 2010

The Role Of Aerobic Glycolysis In The Resting Human Brain, Sanjeev Vaishnavi

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The human brain accounts for 2% of total body weight, though it consumes 20% of the body's energy supply. Most of this energy is provided by the complete oxidation of glucose to carbon dioxide and water, though some fraction of glucose undergoes aerobic glycolysis without concomitant oxidative phosphorylation. Elevation in neuronal activity increases aerobic glycolysis due to the disproportionate increase in blood flow and glucose utilization greater than oxygen consumption. Since aerobic glycolysis produces significantly less energy than complete oxidation of glucose, its role in cellular activities has been overlooked, though its presence in the resting brain has been known …

Fluid Dynamics And Scale-Up Of Bubble Columns With Internals, Ahmed Youssef Jan 2010

Fluid Dynamics And Scale-Up Of Bubble Columns With Internals, Ahmed Youssef

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Bubble columns and slurry bubble columns, as multiphase reactors, are favored for a wide range of applications in the chemical, biochemical, petrochemical and metallurgical industries. They are considered the reactor of choice for the Fischer Tropsch synthesis, among other applications, offering an alternative energy source and providing clean liquid fuels as compared to other reactors. Most of the industrial applications of bubble column reactors require the utilization of heat exchanging tubes, the effect of which on the reactor's performance is not fully understood. This study proposes detailed investigations of selected local hydrodynamics in bubble columns with and without internal heat …

The Role Of Mda5 And Tlr3 In Response To Dsrna And Viral Infection, Stephen Mccartney Jan 2010

The Role Of Mda5 And Tlr3 In Response To Dsrna And Viral Infection, Stephen Mccartney

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

The innate immune system consists of a number of genetically encoded receptors that detect the products of viral replication and initiate signaling cascades leading to activation of the antiviral response. During the course of infection, many viruses produce dsRNA that can be recognized by two major arms of the innate immune system: the toll-like receptors: TLR) and the Rig-I-like receptors: RLR). Among the TLRs, TLR3 binds dsRNA within the endosomal compartment and initiates signaling through its downstream adapter TRIF. Melanoma differentiation-induced gene 5: MDA5) is a member of the RLR family that recognizes dsRNA within the cytosolic compartment and signals …

An Examination Of Oxysterol Effects On Membrane Bilayers Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Brett Olsen Jan 2010

An Examination Of Oxysterol Effects On Membrane Bilayers Using Molecular Dynamics Simulations, Brett Olsen

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

My thesis work focuses on understanding the role of biological membranes in cellular processes. I am particularly interested in how small molecules perturb membrane structure and regulate membrane function. Membranes are primarily responsible for segregating different compartments of biological cells from each other. However, they have other roles as well, including influencing signal transduction in the cell, both through associated membrane proteins and directly through alterations in membrane organization. In order to understand how small molecules change membranes, I use molecular dynamics simulations of small simplified membranes to examine, at an atomic-level detail, how the addition of small molecules to …

An Empirical Analysis On Point-Wise Machine Learning Techniques Using Regression Trees For Web-Search Ranking, Ananth Mohan Jan 2010

An Empirical Analysis On Point-Wise Machine Learning Techniques Using Regression Trees For Web-Search Ranking, Ananth Mohan

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Learning how to rank a set of objects relative to an user defined query has received much interest in the machine learning community during the past decade. In fact, there have been two recent competitions hosted by internationally prominent search companies to encourage research on ranking web site documents. Recent literature on learning to rank has focused on three approaches: point-wise, pair-wise, and list-wise. Many different kinds of classifiers, including boosted decision trees, neural networks, and SVMs have proven successful in the field. This thesis surveys traditional point-wise techniques that use regression trees for web-search ranking. The thesis contains empirical …

Teaching News Literacy In The Age Of New Media: Why Secondary School Students Should Be Taught To Judge The Credibility Of The News They Consume, Elia Powers Jan 2010

Teaching News Literacy In The Age Of New Media: Why Secondary School Students Should Be Taught To Judge The Credibility Of The News They Consume, Elia Powers

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

This paper involves two of the oldest institutions in America -- schools and the press -- and the preparation of informed citizens in the age of new media. I examine the manner and ways in which news literacy, the use of critical thinking skills to judge the reliability of news reports and news sources, is taught to secondary school students in the United States. It is axiomatic that a vigorous and independent press is critical to our democracy. Yet news literacy has not historically been included in the public school curriculum and continues to be widely absent, despite states vowing …

Assessing Effects Of Symmetry On Motif Finding, Lala Motlhabi Jan 2010

Assessing Effects Of Symmetry On Motif Finding, Lala Motlhabi

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Identifying protein DNA binding sites like transcription factor binding sites is a key component of gene regulatory networks. The challenging task of predicting and identifying DNA binding sites both experimentally, and computationally suffers from high false positive due to various contributing factors, including misinterpretation of DNA binding site sequence symmetry. Our study seeks to model and compare the ability of three methods of a motif-finding program, consensus, taking into account orientation to accurately predict variable symmetric/asymmetric true binding site models. The three consensus methods included the c0 method which ignores the complement of a sequence. In this particular experiment it …

An Environment For Stroke Therapy Game Authoring, Simon Tam Jan 2010

An Environment For Stroke Therapy Game Authoring, Simon Tam

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

Stroke is the leading cause of disability in the industrialized world. The disabilities caused by stroke can significantly impact the quality of daily life for stroke survivors. Studies show that a high number of daily body movement repetitions can help recover lost motor functionality. However, many stroke patients do not perform the home exercises needed to reach this high number of repetitions. Games for rehabilitation have been shown to provide motivation to perform home exercises. However, because stroke can leave survivors with different levels of disability, custom games are required. Creating custom games, though, is time consuming and requires advanced …
