A Short History Of Tontines, Kent Mckeever Jan 2010

A Short History Of Tontines, Kent Mckeever

Faculty Scholarship

A tontine is an investment scheme through which shareholders derive some form of profit or benefit while they are living, but the value of each share devolves to the other participants and not the shareholder's heirs on the death of each shareholder. The tontine is usually brought to an end through a dissolution and distribution of assets to the living shareholders when the number of shareholders reaches an agreed small number.

If people know about tontines at all, they tend to visualize the most extreme form – a joint investment whose heritable ownership ends up with the last living shareholder. …

The Governance Of Military Police In Canada, Andrew Halpenny Jan 2010

The Governance Of Military Police In Canada, Andrew Halpenny

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

The Military Police is a special federal police force in Canada with unique authority, designed to support military commanders both in operations and in garrison. However, it has historically been under the command of non-Military Police officers, and is consequently not governed like other police forces in Canada. Part of this arrangement can be explained by its special military duties, but much of it is the result of a tradition that is at odds with current societal norms. It is the position of the author that differences in norms between the Military Police and other Canadian police forces can only …

Are National Class Actions Constitutional?: A Reply To Hogg And Mckee, Janet Walker Jan 2010

Are National Class Actions Constitutional?: A Reply To Hogg And Mckee, Janet Walker

Osgoode Hall Law Journal

This article argues that there is no constitutional impediment to the certification of multijurisdictional class actions by provincial superior courts, and no constitutional requirement to confine plaintiff classes to those in which each claim has a real and substantial connection to the forum. Neither the text of the Constitution nor the constitutionally mandated rules of the conflict of laws restrict court jurisdiction in this way. Rather, the principles of order and fairness require Canadian courts to exercise jurisdiction over multi-jurisdictional class actions in a way that maximizes the objectives of class actions, and minimizes the incidence of overlapping classes and …

M.L.S. Or Abc? : A Christian Critique Of Professionalism, Garrett Trott Jan 2010

M.L.S. Or Abc? : A Christian Critique Of Professionalism, Garrett Trott

The Christian Librarian

A dichotomy has developed between professionals and non-professionals. Either you are or you are not. This article argues that this dichotomy is not biblical and offers an alternative that rests on firm theological soil: vocationalism. When librarianship can be viewed as a vocation, its impact shifts form the individual here and now to the kingdom of God, which impacts both the individual and the community; both the here and the there; and both the already and the not yet.

What's A Librarian To Do? Literature Review: The Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Robert E. Kaehr Jan 2010

What's A Librarian To Do? Literature Review: The Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Robert E. Kaehr

The Christian Librarian

Because carpal tunnel syndrome is considered significantly prevalent among library workers, this literature review was begun to check the injury’s prevalence, seriousness, and potential remedies. The literature review quickly showed the topic fraught with difficulties in everything from trying to define the syndrome to considering best treatments for those afflicted. Although library literature was sparse, the literature was replete with good information and advice. There is still much confusion surrounding the topic, however, and additional information including medical literature was sought to clarify and amplify some of the major aspects of carpal tunnel syndrome as it relates to library workers.

Information Apprenticeship: Integrating Faith And Learning In The Library, Dean M. Riley Jan 2010

Information Apprenticeship: Integrating Faith And Learning In The Library, Dean M. Riley

The Christian Librarian

Librarianship is built on information. As we proceed further into the 21st century, librarians need to understand the concept of “information” as it cannot be easily defined. This paper presents a brief overview of information theory and reviews several concepts proposed by non-librarians. Also, these ideas, when viewed from a Christian perspective can help our understanding of “information.” A review of related scriptures is also included.

Effect Of Different Detrending Approaches On Computational Intelligence Models Of Time Series, Federico Montesino Pouzols, Amaury Lendasse Jan 2010

Effect Of Different Detrending Approaches On Computational Intelligence Models Of Time Series, Federico Montesino Pouzols, Amaury Lendasse

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

This Paper Analyzes the Impact of Different Detrending Approaches on the Performance of a Variety of Computational Intelligence (Ci) Models. Three Approaches Are Compared: Linear, Nonlinear Detrending (based on Empirical Mode Decomposition) and First-Differencing. Five Representative Ci Methods Are Evaluated: Dynamic Evolving Neural-Fuzzy Inference System (DENFIS), Gaussian Process (GP), Multilayer Perceptron (MP), Optimally Pruned Extreme Learning Machine (Op-Elm) and Support Vector Machines (SVM). Four Major Conclusions Are Drawn from Experiments Performed on Six Time Series Benchmarks: 1) Qualitatively, the Effect of Detrending is Remarkably Uniform for All the Ci Methods Considered, 2) Extraction of the overall Trend Does Not Improve …

Op-Elm: Optimally Pruned Extreme Learning Machine, Yoan Miche, Antti Sorjamaa, Patrick Bas, Olli Simula, Christian Jutten, Amaury Lendasse

Engineering Management and Systems Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

In This Brief, the Optimally Pruned Extreme Learning Machine (Op-Elm) Methodology is Presented. It is based on the Original Extreme Learning Machine (Elm) Algorithm with Additional Steps to Make It More Robust and Generic. the Whole Methodology is Presented in Detail and Then Applied to Several Regression and Classification Problems. Results for Both Computational Time and Accuracy (Mean Square Error) Are Compared to the Original Elm and to Three Other Widely Used Methodologies: Multilayer Perceptron (MLP), Support Vector Machine (SVM), and Gaussian Process (GP). as the Experiments for Both Regression and Classification Illustrate, the Proposed Op-Elm Methodology Performs Several Orders …

A Common Lawyer's Perspective On Contrefaçon, Jane C. Ginsburg Jan 2010

A Common Lawyer's Perspective On Contrefaçon, Jane C. Ginsburg

Faculty Scholarship

Contrefaçon in French copyright law examines the scope of French copyright through the lens of remedies. Contrefaçon is the act to which certain civil and criminal sanctions attach. Viewed from this angle, the history of French copyright law tells a tale of the slow emergence of a unified concept of the wrongful act, covering not only the manufacturing of copies but also public performances, live and through transmissions. The emphasis on contrefaçon reveals the continuity of the revolutionary authors' right of 1793 with the ancient régime of printing regulation, with unauthorized production of physical copies of books remaining the essence …
