Reproductive Health

This report evaluated a project in ten Kenyan health facilities. It examined the feasibility, acceptability and effect of introducing reproductive tract infection and sexually transmitted infection (RTI/STI) guidelines on the quality of care provided, and the incremental costs of integrating these services into existing reproductive health (RH) services; it also disseminated the results and lessons learnt within Kenya. Overall, the results showed that integration of activities to screen for and manage STIs/RTIs into RH services is feasible, acceptable to clients and providers, and effective in improving the range and quality of services offered to clients.

Reproductive Health

This report summarizes the role of the Population Council in generating evidence, providing technical leadership, and demonstrating at scale that emergency contraception (EC) can be easily integrated into national family planning programs and other reproductive health services. Since the 1990s, the Population Council, along with other partners, has contributed to the changes seen in the provision and availability of EC, now available in over 140 countries around the world. While much progress has been made in the campaign for access to EC, the Council is committed to improving existing methods of service delivery and to leading advocacy efforts and research …

Medical Tourism: Alternatives To The United States Healthcare System, Clay Kramer Jan 2010

Medical Tourism: Alternatives To The United States Healthcare System, Clay Kramer

Undergraduate Economic Review

This research explores the relationship between rising medical care and insurance costs in the U.S. and Americans' consumption of medical care in foreign countries.  Economic theory suggests that increases in medical care prices in the U.S. would decrease the quantity of medical goods and services demanded within the country.  In recognition of additional factors which uniquely impact the demand for medical care, this research focuses on estimating the frequency of substitution of global medical care for U.S. medical care and understanding whether this practice will become more or less common in the future.

Validity And Reliability Of The Persian Epilepsy Quality Of Life Questionnaire, Haleh Ghaem, Afshin Borhani-Haghighi

Neurosciences

OBJECTIVE: To translate and test the reliability and validity of the 31-item epilepsy quality of life questionnaire (QOLIE-31) in Iranian epileptic patients. METHODS: In order to standardize the questionnaire, using a standard “forward-backward” translation, cognitive debriefing, and cultural adaptation procedure, the English version of the QOLIE-31 was translated to Persian (the Iranian official language). The subjects were Epileptic patients, over 18 years old, referred to the Motaharri Clinic, Shiraz, Southern Iran from March 2007 to March 2008. The reliability and internal consistency of the questionnaire were assessed by Cronbach’s alpha coefficient. Validity was assessed using convergent and disconvergent validity through …

Greek Language And Culture In Australia, Anastasios M. Tamis Jan 2010

Greek Language And Culture In Australia, Anastasios M. Tamis

Arts Book Chapters

The Greek migration and settlement circle in Oceania comprised four important stages: the stage of exodus of approximately 300,000 Hellenes from their ancestral residences (1829-1974), the painful and agonizing stage of settlement in Australia and New Zealand during the pre- and post-WWlI period, the stage of their socioeconomic and cultural interaction during the years 1975-1995, and the stage of consolidation and citizenship that followed. During this period, Greek and Cypriot settlers arriving as migrants to Australia, were progessively transformed into citizens enhancing their social presence, consolidating their economic and cultural contribution, and overcoming the pre-War restrictive immigation policies and attitudes. …

Building America Research Benchmark Definition: Updated December 2009, R. Hendron, C. Engebrecht

Publications (SD)

To track progress toward aggressive multi-year, whole-house energy savings goals of 40%–70% and on-site power production of up to 30%, the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Residential Buildings Program and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) developed the Building America (BA) Research Benchmark in consultation with the Building America industry teams. The Benchmark is generally consistent with mid-1990s standard practice, as reflected in the Home Energy Rating System (HERS) Technical Guidelines (RESNET 2002), with additional definitions that allow the analyst to evaluate all residential end uses, an extension of the traditional HERS rating approach that focuses on space conditioning and …

Potential For Conflict Index Of Management Options At Two New Hampshire Beaches, Rochelle Pernak

Master's Theses and Capstones

The 18 miles of New Hampshire coastline is a popular destination among recreationists, attracting millions of visitors each year. Swimming, surfing and spending time on the beach are just a few of the many activities that take place on the coast. While swimming has been utilized as a recreational activity for thousands of years, surfing has just recently become an established activity in the last few centuries. Surfing's popularity continues to grow around the world and particularly in New Hampshire and on the east coast. With increasing interest in these recreational activities at the beaches and the amount of resources …

Why Ask The Guests? : An Examination Of Mechanisms And Efficacy Of Guest Feedback Used In Hotels In Perth, Selly Sugio

Theses : Honours

This study has explored the importance of feedback mechanisms in the hospitality industry. A mixed methodology was adopted so that the main or major issues could be identified and the respondents' feelings and emotions examined and discovered. In-depth interviews were conducted to discover and explore hotel managers' feeling, emotions, thoughts and understanding of feedback mechanism in the hotel. A questionnaire was developed to investigate the hotel front office or room division staff perspective on feedback mechanisms in the hotel. The rich data is very important because it gives the study more significance and detail. This research found that using feedback …

Our Grandparents, Our Parents, Our Future Selves: Optimizing Function In Old Age., Thomas Michael Gill Jan 2010

Our Grandparents, Our Parents, Our Future Selves: Optimizing Function In Old Age., Thomas Michael Gill

Center for Policy Research

Most of my research at Yale University School of Medicine over the past several years has focused on identifying older adults at risk of functional decline and disability, identifying events that may precipitate the transition from functional independence to disability, and developing strategies to postpone or reduce frailty and disability. As a result of the Precipitating Events Project (PEP) and other research conducted by the Yale Center on Aging/Pepper Center, we now realize that age is only a proxy for other factors that lead to disability, and that some of these factors can be modified to reduce the risk of …

Panel Data Inference Under Spatial Dependence, Badi H. Baltagi, Alain Pirotte Jan 2010

Panel Data Inference Under Spatial Dependence, Badi H. Baltagi, Alain Pirotte

Center for Policy Research

This paper focuses on inference based on the usual panel data estimators of a one-way error component regression model when the true specification is a spatial error component model. Among the estimators considered, are pooled OLS, random and fixed effects, maximum likelihood under normality, etc. The spatial effects capture the cross-section dependence, and the usual panel data estimators ignore this dependence. Two popular forms of spatial autocorrelation are considered, namely, spatial auto-regressive random effects (SAR-RE) and spatial moving average random effects (SMA-RE). We show that when the spatial coefficients are large, test of hypothesis based on the usual panel data …

Alternative Technical Efficiency Measures: Skew, Bias, And Scale, William Clinton Horrace, Qu Feng Jan 2010

Alternative Technical Efficiency Measures: Skew, Bias, And Scale, William Clinton Horrace, Qu Feng

Center for Policy Research

In the fixed-effects stochastic frontier model an efficiency measure relative to the best firm in the sample is universally employed. This paper considers a new measure relative to the worst firm in the sample. We find that estimates of this measure have smaller bias than those of the traditional measure when the sample consists of many firms near the efficient frontier. Moreover, a two-sided measure relative to both the best and the worst firms is proposed. Simulations suggest that the new measures may be preferred depending on the skewness of the inefficiency distribution and the scale of efficiency differences.

Health Care Expenditure And Income In The Oecd Reconsidered: Evidence From Panel Data, Badi H. Baltagi, Francesco Moscone Jan 2010

Health Care Expenditure And Income In The Oecd Reconsidered: Evidence From Panel Data, Badi H. Baltagi, Francesco Moscone

Center for Policy Research

This paper reconsiders the long-run economic relationship between health care expenditure and income using a panel of 20 OECD countries observed over the period 1971-2004. In particular, the paper studies the non-stationarity and cointegration properties between health care spending and income. This is done in a panel data context controlling for both cross-section dependence and unobserved heterogeneity. Cross-section dependence is modeled through a common factor model and through spatial dependence. Heterogeneity is handled through fixed effects in a panel homogeneous model and through a panel heterogeneous model. Our findings suggest that health care is a necessity rather than a luxury, …

The Nfl, Intellectual Property, And The Conquest Of Sports Media, Eric E. Johnson Jan 2010

The Nfl, Intellectual Property, And The Conquest Of Sports Media, Eric E. Johnson

Faculty Articles

This article explores how the National Football League (NFL) has used assertions of intellectual property to control media coverage of its activities and events. Some history is uncovered, including the NFL’s project of wresting copyright ownership to televised game coverage away from the broadcast television networks. Also reviewed is the NFL’s spurious claims of copyright ownership over footage shot by third persons. The article further explains how the NFL has, in recent years, begun to use press accreditation as a way to gain copyright ownership over news-media footage and to eliminate competition with the NFL’s own web and television media …

The Influence Of Instructor Status And Sex On Student Perceptions Of Teacher Credibility And Confirmation Across Time, Roxanne Heimann, Paul Turman Jan 2010

The Influence Of Instructor Status And Sex On Student Perceptions Of Teacher Credibility And Confirmation Across Time, Roxanne Heimann, Paul Turman

Basic Communication Course Annual

Universities continue to rely heavily on graduate teaching assistants (GTAs) to teach many of their entry level courses, with limited research emphasizing student perceptions of GTAs. With this in mind, the purpose of this investigation was to assess the combined influence of instructor status (GTA vs. Professor) and sex on student perceptions of teacher credibility and confirmation behaviors across time. Results from the repeated measures analysis indicated interaction effects for instructor sex and time, whereby female instructors (regardless of their status) were perceived to have higher levels of character, trustworthiness, and perceived caring. Three-way interaction effects emerged for instructor confirmation …

(Re)Constructing Ell And International Student Identities In The Oral Communication Course, Richie Neil Hao Jan 2010

(Re)Constructing Ell And International Student Identities In The Oral Communication Course, Richie Neil Hao

Basic Communication Course Annual

There have been numerous studies (e.g., Dick, 1990; Ferris, 1998; Jung & McCroskey, 2004; Yook, 1995; Yook & Seiler, 1990; Zimmerman, 1995) that discuss the obstacles that English Language Learners (ELL) and international students face in oral communication classrooms. Although these studies provide teaching strategies that can be employed to better serve ELL and international students, they also reinforce stereotypical student identities. By exploring and engaging in critical communication pedagogy (Fassett & Warren, 2007), I problematize some of the foundational studies that construct ELL and international student identities as “at-risk” in oral communication classrooms and offer possibilities by specifically advocating …
