About The (W)Hoopla: A Few Pedagogical Thoughts About The Super Bowl Ritual, Tim Anderson

Communication & Theatre Arts Faculty Publications

In an era of fragmentation it's the only media program left that has any kind of mass ritual component. Which, of course, is not only why so many debate its contents but why and how we, as scholars, should approach the program.

On The Value Of Philosophy: The Latin American Case [Abstract], Manuel Vargas Feb 2010

On The Value Of Philosophy: The Latin American Case [Abstract], Manuel Vargas

Comparative Philosophy

There is very little study of Latin American philosophy in the English-speaking philosophical world. This can sometimes lead to the impression that there is nothing of philosophical worth in Latin American philosophy or its history. The present article offers some reasons for thinking that this impression is mistaken, and indeed, that we ought to have more study of Latin American philosophy than currently exists in the English-speaking philosophical world. In particular, the article argues for three things: (1) an account of cultural resources that is useful for illuminating the fact of cultural differences and variations in cultural complexity, (2) a …

Differences In Individualistic And Collectivistic Tendencies Among College Students In Japan And The United States, Emiko Kobayashi, Harold R. Kerbo, Susan F. Sharp Feb 2010

Differences In Individualistic And Collectivistic Tendencies Among College Students In Japan And The United States, Emiko Kobayashi, Harold R. Kerbo, Susan F. Sharp

Social Sciences

It is a worldwide stereotype that Japanese, compared to Americans, are oriented more toward collectivism. But this stereotypical notion of more collectivism among Japanese, which typically stems from a view that individualism and collectivism stand at opposite ends of a continuum, has been filled with dashed empirical findings, especially in a sample of college students. In the current study, following the view that individualism and collectivism are two separate concepts rather than one with two extremes, we test and compare both individualistic and collectivistic tendencies among college students in Japan and the United States. A review of theories and research …

A Transdiagnostic Model Of Suicidal Ideation And Suicide Attempts, Lori R. Eisner Jan 2010

A Transdiagnostic Model Of Suicidal Ideation And Suicide Attempts, Lori R. Eisner

Open Access Dissertations

Suicide is one of the most tragic issues in mental health. Suicide has traditionally been studied as an outcome of specific psychiatric disorders. The goal of this study was to consider whether there might be underlying dimensions across psychiatric disorders that are related to suicidality. This study proposed a transdiagnostic model of suicidality. Psychiatric symptoms were hypothesized to load onto three factors: Negative Mood, Impulsivity, and Arousal. Factors were then examined as predictors of suicidal ideation and suicide attempts. Data were drawn from the National Comorbidity Survey-Replication Study (NCS-R). Structured interviews were conducted in two parts using the Composite International …

Imagining “Indonesia”: Ethnic Chinese Film Producers In Pre-Independence Cinema, Charlotte Setijadi, Thomas Barker Jan 2010

Imagining “Indonesia”: Ethnic Chinese Film Producers In Pre-Independence Cinema, Charlotte Setijadi, Thomas Barker

Research Collection School of Social Sciences

In this paper, we aim to re-examine the roles of ethnic Chinese filmmakers in Indonesian cinematic history as a preliminary study in the reconsideration of the early years of the film industry. Here, we regard the simplification of history in the film industry as part of a broader attempt by nationalist and New Order ideologues to “appropriate” the origins of cinema and “ ” in Indonesia. On the same note, we argue that the narrative tradition that privileges “indigenous” filmmakers as the originators of asli (authentic ortrue) Indonesian culture on screen reflects the dominant yet narrow definition of nationalism as …

Getting Out Of A Rut: Decolonizing Western Women’S History, Margaret D. Jacobs Jan 2010

Getting Out Of A Rut: Decolonizing Western Women’S History, Margaret D. Jacobs

Department of History: Faculty Publications

For over three decades, western women’s historians have been working not just to challenge male biases within western history scholarship but also to create a more multicultural inclusive narrative. Paradoxically, however, the overarching narrative of western women’s history continues to sideline women of color and to advance a triumphalist interpretation of white women in the West. This essay argues that a multicultural approach has not provided an adequate framework for understanding women and gender in the American West. Instead, western women historians must “decolonize” our narrative and our field through seriously considering the West as a colonial site. To do …

The Role Of Families In Youth Sport Programming In A Canadian Aboriginal Reserve, Robert Schinke, Hope Yungblut, Amy Blodgett, Mark A. Eys, Duke Peltier, Stephen Ritchie, Danielle Recollet-Saikkonen Jan 2010

The Role Of Families In Youth Sport Programming In A Canadian Aboriginal Reserve, Robert Schinke, Hope Yungblut, Amy Blodgett, Mark A. Eys, Duke Peltier, Stephen Ritchie, Danielle Recollet-Saikkonen

Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications

Background: There has been a recent push in the sport psychology literature for sport participants to be approached based on their cultural backgrounds. However, there are few examples where a cultural approach is considered, such as a culturally reflexive version of participatory action research (PAR). In the current study, the role of family is considered in relation to the sport engagement of Canadian Aboriginal youth. Methods: Mainstream researchers teamed with co-researchers from the Wikwemikong Unceded Indian Reserve for 5 years. Community meetings and talking circles were employed as culturally sensitive data collection techniques to uncover how to encourage youth participation …

Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications

Within the motivation literature, it has been indicated that athletes respond more effectively to sport’s contextual challenges through effective adaptation skills. Fiske identified five core motives as facilitators of the adaptation process across cultures: belonging, understanding, controlling, self-enhancement, and trusting. Through a cultural sport psychology approach, the adaptation challenges and strategies of Canadian Aboriginal adolescent athletes from one community (Wikwemikong) are described as they traveled off reserve to compete in mainstream sporting events. Concurrently, Fiske’s core motives are considered in relation to youth sport participants from the aforementioned Aboriginal community. Culture sensitive research methods among the Wikwemikong, including community meetings, …

Qu’Est-Ce Qu’Un Entretien?, Ghislain Thibault Jan 2010

Qu’Est-Ce Qu’Un Entretien?, Ghislain Thibault

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Frames In Harmony - A Critical Analysis Of Song Sequences In The Films Of Guru Dutt, Anagha Kulkarni Jan 2010

Frames In Harmony - A Critical Analysis Of Song Sequences In The Films Of Guru Dutt, Anagha Kulkarni

Open Access Theses

Guru Dutt was one of the most important filmmakers in India, who worked for a little over a decade starting in 1951. He died prematurely in 1964. In those few years, he made some of Indian cinema's most memorable films. Song and dance sequences are an integral part of the narrative structure of popular Indian cinema. Guru Dutt, working within that paradigm, devised innovative methods of using song sequences. In his films, the song sequences were not a distraction, but they served the purpose of carrying the narrative forward, expressing the inexpressible, and replacing scenes. He achieved this by his …
