What Brown Saw And You Can Too, Philip Pearle, Brian Collett, Kenneth Bart, David Bilderback, Dara Newman, D. Scott Samuels
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
A discussion of Robert Brown’s original observations of particles ejected by pollen of the plant Clarkia pulchella undergoing what is now called Brownian motion is given. We consider the nature of those particles and how he misinterpreted the Airy disk of the smallest particles to be universal organic building blocks. Relevant qualitative and quantitative investigations with a modern microscope and with a “homemade” single lens microscope similar to Brown’s are presented.

Association Between Clinical Risk Factors And Progression Of Chronic Kidney Disease In Children, Amy O. Staples, Larry A. Greenbaum, Jodi M. Smith, Debbie S. Gipson, Guido Filler, Bradley A. Warady, Karen Martz, Craig S. Wong
Paediatrics Publications
Background and objectives: Children with chronic kidney disease (CKD) have an increased risk of progression to ESRD. There is a need to identify treatments to slow the progression of CKD, yet there are limited data regarding clinical risk factors that may be suitable targets to slow progression. Design, setting, participants, & measurements: We performed a retrospective cohort study using the North American Pediatric Renal Trials and Cooperative Studies CKD database. There were 4166 pediatric subjects with CKD stages II to IV. Disease progression was defined as a GFR on follow-up of <15 ml/min per 1.73 m 2 or termination in the registry because of dialysis or transplantation. We used Kaplan-Meier and Cox proportional hazards methods to describe progression rates and determine factors associated with CKD progression. Results: In the univariate analysis, CKD progression was associated with age, gender, race, primary disease, CKD stage, registration year, hematocrit, albumin, corrected calcium, corrected phosphorus, and use of certain medications. Factors that remained significant in the multivariate analysis were age, primary disease, CKD stage, registration year, hypertension, corrected phosphorus, corrected calcium, albumin, hematocrit, and medication proxies for anemia and short stature. Conclusions: There are multiple risk factors associated with disease progression in the pediatric CKD population. Factors that may be amenable to intervention include anemia, hypoalbuminemia, hyperphosphatemia, hypocalcemia, hypertension, and short stature. Because of the retrospective nature of our study, confirmation of our results from ongoing prospective studies is warranted before recommending prospective interventional trials. Does Socio/Economic Status Affect Environmental Awareness In Elementary School Children Interacting With School Gardens?, Grady C. Erickson
Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses
This is a case study involving three elementary schools in the greater Lincoln, Nebraska area. These schools were chosen to provide insight to three different economic backgrounds. Saratoga and Randolph from Lincoln Public Schools, and Norris Elementary part of Norris Public Schools 160 was the third school involved in the study. This case study focused on seeing whether socio/economic background had any effect on environmental awareness. To do so, surveys were handed out to each school to help measure environmental awareness. These surveys also helped determine where the environmental literacy standards were in the elementary schools of Lincoln, Nebraska. The …

"Their Past In My Blood": Paule Marshall, Gayl Jones, And Octavia Butler's Response To The Black Aesthetic, Williamenia Miranda Walker Freeman
Dissertations
Paule Marshall’s The Chosen Place, The Timeless People (1969), Gayl Jones’ Corregidora (1975), and Octavia Butler’s Kindred (1979) enhance our conceptualization of black aestheticism and black nationalism as cultural and political movements. The writers use the novel as genre to question the ideological paradigm of a black nationalist aesthetic by providing alternative definitions of community, black women’s sexuality, and race relations. Because of the ways in which these writers respond to black aestheticism and black nationalism, they transform our understanding of movements often perceived as sexist, racist, homophobic, and anti-Semitic. An examination of their works reveals the need for additional …
Shock Rhetoric, David Robert Nelson
Shock Rhetoric, David Robert Nelson
Dissertations
Social movements create a public perception of themselves through rhetorical messages and demonstrations. In order to gain the public's attention, some radical groups use any rhetorical means necessary, including offensive remarks and conduct. Groups, such as the Westboro Baptist Church and Bash Back!, rhetorically challenge the boundaries of prudence. The purpose of this study is to identify, depict, and provide insight regarding shock rhetoric. This study will compare protest methods, visual imagery, and language choices used by Bash Back! and the Westboro Baptist Church. This dissertation helps illuminate why and how groups or individuals use shock rhetoric.

All Theses
The Systems Modeling Language (SysML) is a general-purpose graphical modeling language for specifying, analyzing, designing, and verifying complex systems. This thesis presents a tool called SysFlow Workflow Engine (SWE) that is being developed to execute a domain workflow defined using SysML's Activity Diagram. The thesis also describes extensions added to the SysML semantics to make them SWE executable. SWE focuses on grid computing, cyberinfrastructure and related domains; however, support for other domains can be easily added. SWE aims to provide a common interface to grid, cyberinfrastructure and other domain-specific software by abstracting their complexity and idiosyncrasies. To create a workflow, …
Mapping Problem And Requirements To Solution: Document Analysis Of Senior Design Projects, Shraddha Joshi
Mapping Problem And Requirements To Solution: Document Analysis Of Senior Design Projects, Shraddha Joshi
All Theses
Formulating and solving engineering problems and designing solutions that meet the established requirements are important skills that graduating engineering students need to possess. However, there are noticeable gaps in the literature with respect to understanding how the formulation of design problems and establishment of requirements affect the final design solution. This thesis is an initial attempt to understand the influence of level of detail of problem statement and requirements on the level of detail of final solution. In doing so, a document analysis of final reports from senior design class collected over a period of ten years from 1999 to …

All-Inclusive List of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to investigate how acculturation strategies relate to self-reported ratings of self-efficacy for international counseling students. Acculturation strategy usage may provide an important insight into the self-efficacy estimates of international students. Forty-three participants were recruited via e-mail from counseling programs within the United States. Participants were briefly instructed regarding the online completion of a demographic questionnaire, the Abbreviated Multidimensional Acculturation Scale ([AMAS-ZABB] Zea, Asner-Self, Birman, & Buki, 2003), and the Counseling Self-Estimate Inventory ([COSE] Larson et al., 1992). Thirty-four participants completed the AMAS-ZABB and thirty-one participants completed the COSE. Findings revealed the most common acculturation …

Effect Of Ultrasonic Vibration On The Mass Transfer Coefficient In A Sieve Plate Scrubber, Dinora Monroy Melendez
Effect Of Ultrasonic Vibration On The Mass Transfer Coefficient In A Sieve Plate Scrubber, Dinora Monroy Melendez
All Theses
The air pollution technique of wet scrubbers for fumes, mists and suspended dusts as part of a polluted gas stream has been study as well as used for industries for many decades. The sieve tray is the simplest type of these scrubbers. A laboratory-scale single-stage, sieve tray countercurrent wet scrubber has been designed to study the effect of ultrasonic vibrations on the rate of mass transfer. A 20 kHz ultrasound frequency was chosen for a high performance cavitation to enhance the mass transport between the gas and liquid phases. Various perforation diameters and weir heights were employed in order to …

Predicting Firm Failure: A Behavioral Finance Perspective, Rassoul Yazdipour, Richard Constand
The Journal of Entrepreneurial Finance
In this article we first argue that researchers in the area of financial distress and failure cannot ignore the human/managerial/decision-making side of the business and just focus on the business' operations side; as has been the case so far for almost all the research in the area. We then discuss how psychological phenomena and principles, known as heuristics or mental shortcuts, could be utilized in building more powerful success/failure prediction models especially for small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs).

Anomalous Loss Of Toughness Of Work Toughened Polycarbonate, Shawn E. Meagher
Anomalous Loss Of Toughness Of Work Toughened Polycarbonate, Shawn E. Meagher
Department of Engineering Mechanics: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Glassy polymers such as polycarbonate (PC) can be toughened through compressive plastic deformation. The increase in toughness is substantial, showing as much as a fifteen fold increase in the amount of dissipated energy during failure for samples compressed to 50% plastic strain. This toughness increase can be reversed through thermal aging at temperatures below the glass transition temperature (Tg = 147°C).
The combined effect of plastic compression and thermal aging has been studied using Charpy, Single Edge Notch Bending (SENB), and Compact Tension (CT) tests. The tests mapped the response of samples cut along different orientations relative to the …

The Home Literacy Environment And Kindergarten Literacy Skills: A Case Study, Michele Izzo
The Home Literacy Environment And Kindergarten Literacy Skills: A Case Study, Michele Izzo
Education Masters
This study was completed to determine the effects of the home literacy environment on three areas of literacy development: phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, and concepts about print knowledge. The research was conducted as a case study. Data was collected through interviews, checklists, and a series of literacy assessments. The data shows that a literacy-rich home environment contributes to successful acquisition of emergent literacy skills. Through the review of the literature and the findings of this study, three themes emerged: the value of books in the home, parent teaching of literacy skills, and the involvement of the family in literacy activities.

Fusing Continuous And Discrete Data, On The Example Of Merging Seismic And Gravity Models In Geophysics, Omar Ochoa, Aaron Velasco, Vladik Kreinovich
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many application areas, we need to fuse continuous and discrete models of the same phenomena. For example, in geophysics, we have two main models for describing how the sound velocity changes with location and depth: a discrete gravity-based model, in which we have several layers with abrupt transition between layers, and a seismic model, in which the velocity continuously changes with the change in location and depth -- and a transition is represented by a steeper change. Due to inevitable uncertainty, in two fused models, the same actual transition is placed at slightly different depths.
If we simply fuse …
Towards Chemical Applications Of Dempster-Shafer-Type Approach: Case Of Variant Ligands, Jaime Nava
Towards Chemical Applications Of Dempster-Shafer-Type Approach: Case Of Variant Ligands, Jaime Nava
Departmental Technical Reports (CS)
In many practical situations, molecules can be obtained from a "template" molecule like benzene by replacing some of its hydrogen atoms with ligands (other atoms or atom groups). There can be many possible replacements of this type. To avoid time-consuming testing of all possible replacements, it is desirable to test some of the replacements and then extrapolate to others -- so that only the promising molecules, for which the extrapolated values are desirable, will have to be synthesized and tested.
For this extrapolation, D. J. Klein and co-authors proposed to use a Dempster-Shafer-type poset extrapolation technique developed by G.-C. Rota …
