A Contingent Valuation Of Tampa’S Urban Forest Resource, Alec Foster Oct 2010

A Contingent Valuation Of Tampa’S Urban Forest Resource, Alec Foster

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Urban forests provide environmental, social, and economic benefits to urban residents. These benefits are often overlooked when making spatial and financial distributive decisions in urban areas. The City of Tampa has demonstrated interest in its urban forest resource and estimated its extent and some of the benefits provided. Estimating economic values for benefits that have not been quantified can help to ensure that resources are distributed more efficiently. Five methods to estimate urban forest benefits in the City of Tampa are reviewed, with contingent valuation being the method chosen out of this review process. A mailed, dichotomous choice contingent valuation …

Histogram Based Video Segmentation And Key Frame Extraction On Som And Dft, Songul Cecen Oct 2010

Histogram Based Video Segmentation And Key Frame Extraction On Som And Dft, Songul Cecen

Theses and Dissertations

A new key-frame extraction method, called "index-based retrieval (I-Base)", is presented based on DCT and SOM. It allows user to quickly find particular point within a certain domain and/or determine if the domain is relevant to the need. I-Base forms a hierarchy from the uniquely represented shots by using frames. Eventually the use of hierarchy leads to the generation of video content indexing. Doing so allows the user to map only the relevant section in the source with the request issued. The idea of 'just request-to-response mapping' prevents not only the unwanted information retrieval, but also saves time and bandwidth. …

Assessment Of Acgh Clustering Methodologies, Serena F. Baker Oct 2010

Assessment Of Acgh Clustering Methodologies, Serena F. Baker

Theses and Dissertations

Array comparative genomic hybridization (aCGH) is a technique for identifying duplications and deletions of DNA at specific locations across a genome. Potential objectives of aCGH analysis are the identification of (1) altered regions for a given subject, (2) altered regions across a set of individuals, and (3) clinically relevant clusters of hybridizations. aCGH analysis can be particularly useful when it identifies previously unknown clusters with clinical relevance. This project focuses on the assessment of existing aCGH clustering methodologies. Three methodologies are considered: hierarchical clustering, weighted clustering of called aCGH data, and clustering based on probabilistic recurrent regions of alteration within …

An Evaluation Of The Prevent-Teach-Reinforce (Ptr) Model In A Community Preschool Setting, Laura L. Kulikowski Oct 2010

An Evaluation Of The Prevent-Teach-Reinforce (Ptr) Model In A Community Preschool Setting, Laura L. Kulikowski

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study evaluated the use of the Prevent-Teach-Reinforce (PTR) model with two four-year-old children in a community preschool classroom. A multiple baseline design across activities was used to assess the teacher implementation of the behavior intervention strategies developed during the PTR team process and the changes in child problem behavior and engagement. Additional measures associated with the outcomes, such as researcher procedural integrity and social validity were assessed. The results suggest that the team of teachers were able to implement the PTR intervention with fidelity, which resulted in a decrease in the children’s problem behavior and an increase in their …

The Relationship Between Knowledge And Beliefs About Human Papillomavirus, Acceptance Of The Human Papillomavirus Vaccine, And Intentions To Practice Safer Sex Behaviors Among Female College Students, Theresa Scorcia-Wilson Oct 2010

The Relationship Between Knowledge And Beliefs About Human Papillomavirus, Acceptance Of The Human Papillomavirus Vaccine, And Intentions To Practice Safer Sex Behaviors Among Female College Students, Theresa Scorcia-Wilson

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Introduction. Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) continue to be highly prevalent among young women, and STIs continue to be a challenging health issue on college campuses. Studies have shown that the highest prevalence of human papillomavirus (HPV) is among young adult women, ages 20 to 24, including female college students. While the HPV vaccine has proven to be highly effective in preventing certain high-risk types of HPV, it is not effective in preventing all types of HPV or other STIs. Practicing other safer sex behaviors, in addition to condom use, also can help individuals protect themselves and their partners from …

Compressed Sensing With Coherent And Redundant Dictionaries, Emmanuel J. Candès, Yonina C. Eldar, Deanna Needell, Paige Randall Oct 2010

Compressed Sensing With Coherent And Redundant Dictionaries, Emmanuel J. Candès, Yonina C. Eldar, Deanna Needell, Paige Randall

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

This article presents novel results concerning the recovery of signals from undersampled data in the common situation where such signals are not sparse in an orthonormal basis or incoherent dictionary, but in a truly redundant dictionary. This work thus bridges a gap in the literature and shows not only that compressed sensing is viable in this context, but also that accurate recovery is possible via an ℓ1-analysis optimization problem. We introduce a condition on the measurement/sensing matrix, which is a natural generalization of the now well-known restricted isometry property, and which guarantees accurate recovery of signals that are …

Evaluation Of School Wellness Policies In North San Luis Obispo County (Final Report), Ann Yelmokas Mcdermott, David W. Hey, Laurie Pugh, Rosanna Taylor, Arlene Grant-Holcomb, Stephanie F. Teaford

Kinesiology and Public Health

A two year grant (October 2008-2010) was awarded to the San Luis Obispo County Public Health Department (SLO-PHD) so that outside agencies could engage in school wellness policy (SWP) advocacy and community activities to aid in combating the growing epidemic of obesity among the county‘s high risk populations. Under SLO-PHD oversight, Healthy Eating Active Living (HEAL-SLO) proposed school district outcomes, objectives, and indicators. (Attachment A provides the SWP rationale while Attachment B contains the HEAL-SLO/TCE purpose and goals.) In March 2009, a research team from newly formed STRIDE at California Polytechnic State University was contracted to review and evaluate Lillian …

Formulary Apportionment – Myths And Prospects, Reuven S. Avi-Yonah, Ilan Benshalom

Law & Economics Working Papers

This paper seeks to re-examine the formulary alternative to transfer pricing by inquiring whether partial integration of formulary concepts into current practices would offer a reasonable alternative to transfer pricing rules. We believe that the key to achieving an equitable and efficient allocation of MNE income is to solve the problem of the residual, i.e., how to allocate income generated from mobile assets and activities whose risks are born collectively by the entire MNE group. These assets and activities generate most of the current transfer pricing compliance and administrative costs, as well as tax avoidance opportunities. A limited formulary tax …

Chromatographic Analysis Of Acetohexamide Binding To Glycated Human Serum Albumin, K.S. Joseph, Jeanethe Anguizola, Abby J. Jackson, David S. Hage Oct 2010

Chromatographic Analysis Of Acetohexamide Binding To Glycated Human Serum Albumin, K.S. Joseph, Jeanethe Anguizola, Abby J. Jackson, David S. Hage

David Hage Publications

Acetohexamide is a drug used to treat type II diabetes and is tightly bound to the protein human serum albumin (HSA) in the circulation. It has been proposed that the binding of some drugs with HSA can be affected by the non-enzymatic glycation of this protein. This study used highperformance affinity chromatography to examine the changes in acetohexamide-HSA binding that take place as the glycation of HSA is increased. It was found in frontal analysis experiments that the binding of acetohexamide to glycated HSA could be described by a two-site model involving both strong and weak affinity interactions. The average …
