Nebraska School Psychologists' Perceptions Regarding The Sufficiency Of Response To Intervention (Rti), Jami Jo L. Thompson Oct 2010

Nebraska School Psychologists' Perceptions Regarding The Sufficiency Of Response To Intervention (Rti), Jami Jo L. Thompson

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The reauthorization of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA) provided schools the option of utilizing Response to Intervention (RtI) as part of a comprehensive Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT) Evaluation for Specific Learning Disabilities (SLD). However, there is disparity among educational professionals regarding the components that should be included in the RtI MDT evaluation. The purpose of this study was to examine the perceptions of Nebraska school psychologists regarding the sufficiency of RtI as a comprehensive Multi Disciplinary Team (MDT) evaluation for Specific Learning Disability (SLD) determination and identify the additional components that school psychologists believe are necessary to …

Strong (X)Html Compliance With Haskell's Flexible Type System, Paul G. Talaga, Steve J. Chapin Oct 2010

Strong (X)Html Compliance With Haskell's Flexible Type System, Paul G. Talaga, Steve J. Chapin

Electrical Engineering and Computer Science - All Scholarship

We report on the embedding of a domain specific language, (X)HTML, into Haskell and demonstrate how this superficial non-context-free language can be represented and rendered to guarantee World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) compliance. Compliance of web content is important for the health of the Internet, accessibility, visibility, and reliable search. While tools exist to verify web content is compliant according to the W3C, few systems guarantee that all produced content is compliant. We present CH-(X)HTML, a library for generating compliant (X)HTML content by using Haskell to encode the nontrivial syntax of (X)HTML set forth by the W3C. Any compliant document …

Continuous Electrowetting Actuation Utilizing Current Rectification Properties Of Valve Metal Films, Corey M. Lynch Oct 2010

Continuous Electrowetting Actuation Utilizing Current Rectification Properties Of Valve Metal Films, Corey M. Lynch

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Electrowetting on dielectric (EWOD) is a technique for reducing the apparent contact angle of a fluid droplet, which has many promising applications in the fields of optics, digital displays, and lab-on-a-chip research. In this thesis, a design is presented for a novel single circuit device for achieving continuous droplet motion, by using the current-rectifying properties of valve metals to create diode-like behavior. This contrasts with existing designs, which require an array of individual electrodes to achieve motion in discrete steps. We are able to demonstrate continuous droplet motion across a 28mm-long test strip with an applied voltage of 303 V …

The Effects Of Directional Audit Guidance And Estimation Uncertainty On Auditor Confirmation Bias And Professional Skepticism When Evaluating Fair Value Estimates, Norma R. Montague Oct 2010

The Effects Of Directional Audit Guidance And Estimation Uncertainty On Auditor Confirmation Bias And Professional Skepticism When Evaluating Fair Value Estimates, Norma R. Montague

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

In this study, I examine the effects of audit guidance and estimation uncertainty on auditors’ confirmation bias and professional skepticism when evaluating fair value estimates. Fair value estimation is becoming more prevalent in financial reporting frameworks, and regulators warn that fair value estimation presents higher risk of material misstatement when greater judgment in estimation is involved. In addition recent evidence from the Public Company Accounting Oversight Board (PCAOB) indicates that some auditors may not be exercising sufficient professional skepticism when performing audit procedures in higher risk areas of the audit. Martin et al. (2006) suggest that it may be the …

The Monitoring And Evaluation Of Geothermal Systems, Whitney E. Maynard Oct 2010

The Monitoring And Evaluation Of Geothermal Systems, Whitney E. Maynard

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With the heightened importance of green engineering in today’s society, harnessing the Earth’s internal energy has become ever more important. Specifically, the use of geothermal heat pumps as a means of heating and cooling homes and municipal buildings is on the rise. However, due to the high cost of installation and limited amount of research conducted, geothermal systems in the State of Florida have yet to meet their potential as an alternative heating and cooling source. With Florida’s relatively constant ground temperature of 72°F, an above average temperature gradient for both heating and cooling of indoor areas is provided. To …

Understanding, Modeling And Valuing Ecosystem Services, Robert Costanza Oct 2010

Understanding, Modeling And Valuing Ecosystem Services, Robert Costanza

Systems Science Friday Noon Seminar Series

Ecosystem services (ES) are the direct and indirect contributions of ecosystems (in combination with other inputs) to human well-being. An ES-based approach can assess the trade-offs inherent in managing humans embedded in ecological systems. Evaluating trade-offs requires both an understanding of the biophysical magnitudes of ES changes that result from human actions, as well as an understanding of their impact on human well-being, broadly conceived. This talk discusses the state of the art of ES assessment, valuation, and modeling, including the potential of integrated ecological economic modeling. Valuation is about assessing trade-offs – not necessarily about trades (exchanges) in markets …

From Night To Dawn: The Cultural Criticism Of George A. Romero, Christopher Paul Wagenheim Oct 2010

From Night To Dawn: The Cultural Criticism Of George A. Romero, Christopher Paul Wagenheim

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Analyzing George A. Romero's Night of the Living Dead (1968) and Dawn of the Dead (1978) in relation to the early works of Marshal McLuhan, Erich Fromm, and Herbert Marcuse reveals an ideological parallel that can be explicated using Antonio Gramsci's theory of cultural hegemony. While McLuhan, Marcuse, and Fromm observe, in order to critique, social manifestations of power in a consumerist system, Romero presents a model of hegemony in his films that he exposes to extreme stress thereby allowing viewers to observe such manifestations of power for themselves. These analyses are significant because although Marcuse, McLuhan, Fromm, and Romero …

Accurate Description Of The Optical Response Of A Multilayered Spherical System In The Long Wavelength Approximation, H. Y. Chung, G. Y. Guo, Hai-Pang Chiang, D. P. Tsai, P.T. Leung Oct 2010

Accurate Description Of The Optical Response Of A Multilayered Spherical System In The Long Wavelength Approximation, H. Y. Chung, G. Y. Guo, Hai-Pang Chiang, D. P. Tsai, P.T. Leung

Physics Faculty Publications and Presentations

The optical response of a multilayered spherical system of unlimited number of layers (a “matryoshka”) in the long wavelength limit can be accounted for from the knowledge of the static multipole polarizability of the system to first-order accuracy. However, for systems of ultrasmall dimensions or systems with sizes not-too-small compared to the wavelength, this ordinary quasistatic long wavelength approximation (LWA) becomes inaccurate. Here we introduce two significant modifications of the LWA for such a nanomatryoshka in each of the two limits: the nonlocal optical response for ultrasmall systems (<10 >nm), and the “finite-wavelength corrections” for systems ∼100 nm. This is …

Ballistic Penetration Of A Sandbagged Redoubt Using Silica Sand And Pulverized Rubber Of Various Grain Sizes, Robert Paul Cole Oct 2010

Ballistic Penetration Of A Sandbagged Redoubt Using Silica Sand And Pulverized Rubber Of Various Grain Sizes, Robert Paul Cole

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The basis of this work is to find how varying the grain size of materials contained in sandbags (sand and crumb rubber) effects the ballistic penetration of the projectiles from both the 7.62x39mm (308-short), and 9mm Luger cartridges. The sandbags were stacked in a pyramidal stacking configuration according to military specifications in order to simulate a section of a sandbag barrier or redoubt as would be seen on the battlefield. The projectiles were fired at the targets, and the velocity and penetration data was recorded. The results concern both military and civilian applications alike. The 7.62x39 round was found to …

A Novel Approach To X-Ray Mirror Bending Stability And Control, Michael Weinbaum Oct 2010

A Novel Approach To X-Ray Mirror Bending Stability And Control, Michael Weinbaum

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

A novel, no-contact approach to X-ray mirror bending control is presented here,

proposed for use on the beamlines of the European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL)

project. A set of mirrors with tunable bending radii are desired, that will maintain their

optical properties even as the beam incidence causes local heating. Various mechanical

bending mechanisms have been proposed and used on other beamlines, which can take up

a lot of physical space, demanding more vacuum power, while using expensive high

precision servomotors. Rather than bend the mirror by mechanical means, it is proposed

to heat the mirror to produce the …

Policy Considerations From A Nationwide It-In-Education Initiative: Macedonia Connects, Laura Hosman Oct 2010

Policy Considerations From A Nationwide It-In-Education Initiative: Macedonia Connects, Laura Hosman

Political Science

Though information technology (IT) is increasingly touted as an effective tool through which governments may enhance their development efforts, to date, many IT-related deployments have remained in a pilot stage, which does little to aid governments in understanding macro-level IT policy approaches to confronting development challenges. To address this shortcoming, this article presents a unique nationwide initiative: Macedonia Connects, a multipartner, scaled IT-for-education project wherein every school in the country was equipped with both computers and wireless Internet connections and through which the Internet was made available to citizens across the entire country. A number of policy-related aspects of the …

Exploring The Benefits Of Buying Industry Leading It Infrastructure In A Healthcare Setting, Frank Biondolillo Oct 2010

Exploring The Benefits Of Buying Industry Leading It Infrastructure In A Healthcare Setting, Frank Biondolillo

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

IT infrastructure leaders are under growing pressure to balance the demand for new and rapidly changing technologies in an era of fixed or declining IT budgets. They must buy wisely, make sure that every infrastructure dollar is spent wisely, and ensure it all fits into a preconceived plan that supports the organization's mission. This research looks at the IT literature, develops a qualitative research methodology and presents findings from a new study of IT infrastructure decision making in the healthcare industry. The findings show that healthcare technology leaders are building critical components of their infrastructure using the top two hardware …

The One-Year Asylum Deadline And The Bia: No Protection, No Process, Penn State Law Immigrants' Rights Cliinic, Human Rights First, National Immigrant Justice Center

Center for Immigrants' Rights Clinic Publications

The right to seek asylum from persecution is a fundamental and long-recognized human right. The United States committed to protecting refugees in 1967 when it signed the Protocol relating to the Status of Refugees and later enacted legislation to incorporate the Protocol’s key provisions into domestic law. Despite these commitments, in 1996 Congress enacted a filing deadline for asylum applications which has resulted in potentially denying protections to thousands of legitimate refugees.
