Method For Determining The Dielectric Constant Of Particles, Vladimir Petrovsky, Fatih Dogan
Method For Determining The Dielectric Constant Of Particles, Vladimir Petrovsky, Fatih Dogan
Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
A method of measuring the dielectric constant of a powder, including selecting a powder having an unknown first dielectric constant, selecting a liquid having a known second dielectric constant, and introducing a predetermined amount of powder into a predetermined volume of liquid to define a slurry characterized by a known volume fraction of powder. Next, the impedance spectra of the slurry are plotted over a predetermined frequency range, the measured dielectric constant data is read and the appropriate equivalent circuit for the slurry is determined. Appropriate equivalent circuit equations are applied to the measured dielectric constant data, and the first …

On Boredom, Information Systems, And The Practice Of Good Reading, Alberto Salarelli
On Boredom, Information Systems, And The Practice Of Good Reading, Alberto Salarelli
Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)
Boredom is one of most characteristic features of modern humans. In fact, the large amount of time available, due to the development of information systems, has made it possible to delegate various types of tasks to automatic machines. Traditionally, by boredom we mean a sort of defence mechanism used by humans against an excessive lack of stimuli which can lead to a progressive reduction in cerebral activity. Today, after the build up of systems which allow one to obtain great quantities of information from all parts of the world immediately, boredom seems to manifest itself as a symptom of “information …

Measurement Invariance Of The Kidney Disease And Quality Of Life Instrument (Kdqol-Sf) Across Veterans And Non-Veterans, Karen L. Saban, Fred B. Bryant, Dominic J. Reda, Kevin T. Stroupe, Denise M. Hynes
Measurement Invariance Of The Kidney Disease And Quality Of Life Instrument (Kdqol-Sf) Across Veterans And Non-Veterans, Karen L. Saban, Fred B. Bryant, Dominic J. Reda, Kevin T. Stroupe, Denise M. Hynes
Psychology: Faculty Publications and Other Works
Background
Studies have demonstrated that perceived health-related quality of life (HRQOL) of patients receiving hemodialysis is significantly impaired. Since HRQOL outcome data are often used to compare groups to determine health care effectiveness it is imperative that measures of HRQOL are valid. However, valid HRQOL comparisons between groups can only be made if instrument invariance is demonstrated. The Kidney Disease Quality of Life-Short Form (KDQOL-SF) is a widely used HRQOL measure for patients with chronic kidney disease (CKD) however, it has not been validated in the Veteran population. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to examine the measurement invariance …

An Application Of Statistical Technique To Correct Satellite Data Due To Orbit Degradation, Md Zahidur Rahman, Leonid Roytman, Run Jesmin
Publications and Research
This paper apply an statistical technique to correct radiometric data measured by Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometers(AVHRR) onboard the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Polar Orbiting Environmental Satellites(POES). This paper study Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) stability in the NOAA/NESDIS Global Vegetation Index (GVI) data for the period 1982-2003. AVHRR weekly data for the five NOAA afternoon satellites NOAA-7, NOAA-9, NOAA-11, NOAA-14, and NOAA-16 are used for the China dataset, for it includes a wide variety or different ecosystems represented globally. GVI has found wide use for studying and monitoring land surface, atmosphere, and recently for analyzing climate and …

Increasing Parameter Certainty And Data Utility Through Multi-Objective Calibration Of A Spatially Distributed Temperature And Solute Model, Christina J. Bandaragoda, Bethany T. Neilson
Increasing Parameter Certainty And Data Utility Through Multi-Objective Calibration Of A Spatially Distributed Temperature And Solute Model, Christina J. Bandaragoda, Bethany T. Neilson
Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications
To support the goal of distributed hydrologic and instream model predictions based on physical processes, we explore multi-dimensional parameterization determined by a broad set of observations. We present a systematic approach to using various data types at spatially distributed locations to decrease parameter bounds sampled within calibration algorithms that ultimately provide information regarding the extent of individual processes represented within the model structure. Through the use of a simulation matrix, parameter sets are first locally optimized by fitting the respective data at one or two locations and then the best results are selected to resolve which parameter sets perform best …

Comprehensive Structural And Functional Characterization Of The Human Kinome By Protein Structure Modeling And Ligand Virtual Screening, Michal Brylinski, Jeffrey Skolnick
Comprehensive Structural And Functional Characterization Of The Human Kinome By Protein Structure Modeling And Ligand Virtual Screening, Michal Brylinski, Jeffrey Skolnick
Faculty Publications
The growing interest in the identification of kinase inhibitors, promising therapeutics in the treatment of many diseases, has created a demand for the structural characterization of the entire human kinome. At the outset of the drug development process, the lead-finding stage, approaches that enrich the screening library with bioactive compounds are needed. Here, protein structure based methods can play an important role, but despite structural genomics efforts, it is unlikely that the three-dimensional structures of the entire kinome will be available soon. Therefore, at the proteome level, structure-based approaches must rely on predicted models, with a key issue being their …

Tubular carbonate concretions of up to 1 m in length and perpendicular to bedding, occur abundantly in the Upper Pliensbachian (upper Amaltheus margaritatus Zone, Gibbosus Subzone) in outcrops (Fontaneilles section) in the vicinity of Riviére-sûr-Tarn, southern France. Stable isotope analyses of these concretions show negative δ13C values that decrease from the rim to the center from -18.8‰ to -25.7‰ (V-PDB), but normal marine δ18O values (-1.8‰). Carbon isotope analyses of Late Pliensbachian bulk carbonate (matrix) samples from the Fontaneilles section show clearly decreasing C-isotope values across the A. margaritatus Zone, from +1‰ to -3‰ (V-PDB). Isotope analyses of coeval belemnite …

Dish-Stirling systems are a form of concentrating solar power (CSP) emerging as an efficient and reliable source of renewable energy. Various technical hurdles are involved in the grid interconnection of dish-Stirling systems, particularly with issues related to power factor correction, low voltage ride-through capability, and reactive power planning. While there are no grid-interconnection requirements specific to dish-Stirling technology, the requirements currently established for wind farms are used as a starting point due to the similar design and operating characteristics between wind farms and dish-Stirling solar farms. a dish-Stirling solar farm requires external reactive power compensation to meet the power factor …

Are Investors’ Gains And Losses From Securities Fraud Equal Over Time? Theory And Evidence, Alicia J. Davis
Are Investors’ Gains And Losses From Securities Fraud Equal Over Time? Theory And Evidence, Alicia J. Davis
Law & Economics Working Papers
Most leading securities regulation scholars argue that compensating securities fraud victims is inefficient. They maintain that because diversified investors that trade frequently are as likely to gain from trading in fraud-tainted stocks as they are to suffer harm from doing so, these investors should have no expected net losses from fraud over the long term. This assertion, which analogizes trading in fraud-tainted stocks to participating in a coin toss game in which players win $1 on heads and lose $1 on tails, is problematic for a number of reasons. First, even if we accept this analogy, probability theory holds that …
