Development Of A Portable Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopic Technique For Measuring Stable Isotopes In Atmospheric Methane, Gregory A. Bostrom Jan 2010

Development Of A Portable Cavity Ring-Down Spectroscopic Technique For Measuring Stable Isotopes In Atmospheric Methane, Gregory A. Bostrom

Dissertations and Theses

Trace gases can have a significant impact on the Earth's climate, and the analysis of changes in these gases and an understanding of how much of these changes are a result of human activity is important for understanding global climate change. Methane (CH4) is the second only to CO2 in radiative forcing over the last 200 years, and its concentration in the atmosphere has more than doubled since 1750. Sources and sinks of CH4 have characteristic isotopic effects, which shift the relative concentration of the methane isotopologues. Spectroscopic techniques for of analysis the isotopic composition of …

Hydrologic Data Assimilation: State Estimation And Model Calibration, Caleb Matthew Dechant

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis is a combination of two separate studies which examine hydrologic data assimilation techniques: 1) to determine the applicability of assimilation of remotely sensed data in operational models and 2) to compare the effectiveness of assimilation and other calibration techniques. The first study examines the ability of Data Assimilation of remotely sensed microwave radiance data to improve snow water equivalent prediction, and ultimately operational streamflow forecasts. Operational streamflow forecasts in the National Weather Service River Forecast Center are produced with a coupled SNOW17 (snow model) and SACramento Soil Moisture Accounting (SAC-SMA) model. A comparison of two assimilation techniques, the …

Bilingual Spanish-English Speaking 4-Year-Old-Children: English Normative Data And Correlations With Parent Reports, Brooke Leann Powers Jan 2010

Bilingual Spanish-English Speaking 4-Year-Old-Children: English Normative Data And Correlations With Parent Reports, Brooke Leann Powers

Dissertations and Theses

Many bilingual Spanish-English preschool aged children are impacted by speech sound disorders; and research has shown that bilingual speech sound systems develop differently than monolinguals'. Research has also shown that, for monolingual English and Spanish speakers, parent reports can be a valid tool for identification and single-word assessments can effectively diagnose speech disorder, yet little, if any, normative data or information about the validity of parent reports as an identification tool exists for bilingual Spanish-English speakers. The purpose of the present study was to create bilingual speech normative data for English single-word assessment scores for percent consonants correct (PCC), percent …

Designing Exhibits For Gender Equity, Toni Nicole Dancu Jan 2010

Designing Exhibits For Gender Equity, Toni Nicole Dancu

Dissertations and Theses

Gender equity has been a national and global aim for over half a century (Ceci & Williams, 2007; National Center for Education Statistics, 2003; National Science Board, 2008). While gains have been made, one area where inequity remains is spatial reasoning ability, where a large gender gap in favor of males has persisted over the years (Else-Quest, Linn, & Shibley Hyde, 2010; National Science Board, 2008; Ruble, Martin, & Berenbaum, 2006). This gender gap in spatial reasoning has had substantial societal impact on the career interests of females in areas of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM), contributing to the …

Practical Type Inference For The Gadt Type System, Chuan-Kai Lin Jan 2010

Practical Type Inference For The Gadt Type System, Chuan-Kai Lin

Dissertations and Theses

Generalized algebraic data types (GADTs) are a type system extension to algebraic data types that allows the type of an algebraic data value to vary with its shape. The GADT type system allows programmers to express detailed program properties as types (for example, that a function should return a list of the same length as its input), and a general-purpose type checker will automatically check those properties at compile time. Type inference for the GADT type system and the properties of the type system are both currently areas of active research. In this dissertation, I attack both problems simultaneously by …

Broadcast Mechanism For Improving Conditional Branch Prediction In Speculative Multithreaded Processors, Renjith Thankappan Achary Retnamma Jan 2010

Broadcast Mechanism For Improving Conditional Branch Prediction In Speculative Multithreaded Processors, Renjith Thankappan Achary Retnamma

Dissertations and Theses

ABSTRACT Many aspects of speculative multithreading have been under constant and crucial research in the recent times with the increased importance in exploiting parallelism in single thread applications. One of the important architectural optimizations that is very pertinent in this scenario is branch prediction. Branch Prediction assumes increased importance for multi-threading systems that execute threads speculatively, since wrong predictions can be much costlier here, in terms of threads, than a few instructions that occupy the pipeline in a uni-processor. Conventional branch prediction techniques have provided increasingly better prediction accuracies for uni-core processing. But the branch prediction itself takes on a …

The Design Of A Novel Tip Enhanced Near-Field Scanning Probe Microscope For Ultra-High Resolution Optical Imaging, Derek Brant Nowak Jan 2010

The Design Of A Novel Tip Enhanced Near-Field Scanning Probe Microscope For Ultra-High Resolution Optical Imaging, Derek Brant Nowak

Dissertations and Theses

Traditional light microscopy suffers from the diffraction limit, which limits the spatial resolution to λ/2. The current trend in optical microscopy is the development of techniques to bypass the diffraction limit. Resolutions below 40 nm will make it possible to probe biological systems by imaging the interactions between single molecules and cell membranes. These resolutions will allow for the development of improved drug delivery mechanisms by increasing our understanding of how chemical communication within a cell occurs. The materials sciences would also benefit from these high resolutions. Nanomaterials can be analyzed with Raman spectroscopy for molecular and atomic bond information, …

Between Non-Intervention And Protection: A Study On The Case Of Darfur And The Responsibility To Protect, David Ryan Lucas Jan 2010

Between Non-Intervention And Protection: A Study On The Case Of Darfur And The Responsibility To Protect, David Ryan Lucas

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis explores the obstacles in establishing a consistent and effective response framework for humanitarian catastrophe and the importance of maintaining a sustained dialogue to this end. It does so by recognizing the underlying conflict between two positions: the norm of non-intervention of states into the affairs of others, and the protection of individuals caught in the middle of violent conflict. The importance of working towards a resolution of this conflict is illustrated through the case study of Darfur, where a divided international community led an insufficient response to the crisis that can ultimately be judged as a failure. Lastly, …

Hierarchical Image Analysis And Characterization Of Scaling Effects In Remote Sensing, Craig David Ducey Jan 2010

Hierarchical Image Analysis And Characterization Of Scaling Effects In Remote Sensing, Craig David Ducey

Dissertations and Theses

The effects of scale influence all aspects of spatial analysis and should be expressly considered early in research planning. Remotely sensed images provide unique landscape perspectives and possess several features amenable to dealing with scale. In particular, images can be segmented into image objects representative of landscape features and structured as nested hierarchies for evaluating landscape patterns across a range of scales. The objectives of this research are to evaluate methods for: 1) characterizing candidate image objects to inform the selection of user-supplied segmentation parameters and 2) exploring the multi-scale structure of landscape patterns for defining and describing potentially important …

Exploratory Eddy Covariance Measurements Of Surface Heat And Co2 Fluxes In The Roughness Sublayer Of An Urban Environment, Benjamin F. Burnett

Dissertations and Theses

In this study eddy covariance was used to measure sensible heat, latent heat, and carbon dioxide fluxes for the months of August, September, and October of 2009 within the roughness sublayer (RSL) of the urban center of Portland, OR. Vehicle traffic and solar radiation were also measured for the month of October. Flux measurements were compared with measurements from other urban areas as a test of reasonableness. CO₂ fluxes were nearly always positive and were strongly correlated with the weekday diurnal traffic cycle. CO₂ fluxes averaged 6.6 μmol/m^²s, which is less than other published measurements in urban areas. Sensible and …

A Logic Formulation For The Qca Cell Arrangement Problem, Marc Stewart Orr Jan 2010

A Logic Formulation For The Qca Cell Arrangement Problem, Marc Stewart Orr

Dissertations and Theses

Some people believe that IC densities are approaching the fundamental limits inherent to semiconductor technologies. One alternative to semiconductors is Quantum-dot Cellular Automata (QCA); QCA is a nanotechnology that offers the potential to build denser IC's that switch at higher frequencies and run on lower power. QCA's most basic building block, the QCA cell, is inherently binary; digital circuits are implemented by arranging these QCA cells in pre-defined configurations on a two dimensional plane. This paper proposes a logic formulation that describes arranging QCA cells on a two dimensional plane; it is presented as a set of rules that can …

The Role Of Old-Fashioned Racism: Disaggregating Symbolic Racism In The United States, Leslie Curtis Cox Jan 2010

The Role Of Old-Fashioned Racism: Disaggregating Symbolic Racism In The United States, Leslie Curtis Cox

LSU Master's Theses

Old-fashioned, biological, or "Jim Crow" racism is viewed by many in the political science and psychology literature to be largely a relic of the past. In the post-segregation era it has been replaced as a political force by symbolic racism, although its residual effect still operates within symbolic racism as negative racial affect. Symbolic racism is thought of as a coherent belief system that describes whites‘ attitudes not only in the United States, but in some European democracies as well. This conceptualization of symbolic racism ignores the differences in the historical legacy of racism across different regional and demographic contexts. …

Berlin & The Origins Of Detente: Multilateral & Bilateral Negotiations In The Berlin Crisis, 1958-1963, Richard Dean Williamson Jan 2010

Berlin & The Origins Of Detente: Multilateral & Bilateral Negotiations In The Berlin Crisis, 1958-1963, Richard Dean Williamson

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

"Berlin & the Origins of Detente" is a diplomatic history of the Berlin Crisis from 1958-1963. 'Berlin Crisis' usually means the events surrounding construction of the Berlin Wall in August 1961. The Wall, erected just two months after US President John Kennedy and the Soviet Union's Chairman Nikita Khrushchev met at Vienna, physically divided East Berlin from the Western sectors of the US, Britain and France, who kept occupation forces under the 1945 Potsdam accords. This work covers the events leading up to the Wall and after, when the focus shifted from multilateral Allied diplomacy in the Eisenhower-era to bilateral …

Solid-Liquid Separation Technologies In The Conversion Of Bagasse To Liquid Fuel, Keith Miller Jan 2010

Solid-Liquid Separation Technologies In The Conversion Of Bagasse To Liquid Fuel, Keith Miller

LSU Master's Theses

Development of liquid biofuels has entered a new phase of large scale pilot demonstrations. A number of plants in operation or under construction face the engineering challenges of creating a viable plant design, scaling up, and optimizing various unit operations. It is well-known that separation technologies account for 50-70% of both capital and operating costs. Processes vary in terms of selection of unit operations; however, solid-liquid separations are likely to be a major contributor to the overall project costs. A typical process for ethanol production from biomass includes several solid-liquid separation steps. The nature of biomass derived materials makes it …

Elastohydrodynamic Analysis Of Spur Gears Using Load-Sharing Concept: Running-In And Steady-State, Saleh Akbarzadeh Jan 2010

Elastohydrodynamic Analysis Of Spur Gears Using Load-Sharing Concept: Running-In And Steady-State, Saleh Akbarzadeh

LSU Doctoral Dissertations

Gears are widely used in industry and hence their performance is of vital importance. Under the typical operating conditions of gears, the lubricant layer formed between the teeth of the pinion and the gear cannot completely separate the surfaces and contact of asperities of the pinion and gear occurs. This case is usually referred to as mixed lubrication problem. In this research the load-sharing concept has been employed to predict the performance of the pinion-gear system. The load-sharing concept is an efficient method to solve the mixed lubrication problem and is capable to predict the thickness of the lubricant film, …
