On Scientific Research: The Role Of Statistical Modeling And Hypothesis Testing, Lisa L. Harlow Nov 2010

On Scientific Research: The Role Of Statistical Modeling And Hypothesis Testing, Lisa L. Harlow

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Comments on Rodgers (2010a, 2010b) and Robinson and Levin (2010) are presented. Rodgers (2010a) initially reported on a growing trend towards more mathematical and statistical modeling; and a move away from null hypothesis significance testing (NHST). He defended and clarified those views in his sequel. Robinson and Levin argued against the perspective espoused by Rodgers and called for more research using experimentally manipulated interventions and less emphasis on correlational research and ill-founded prescriptive statements. In this response, the goal of science and major scientific approaches are discussed as well as their strengths and shortcomings. Consideration is given to how their …

Modelling Uncertainty Caused By Internal Waves On The Accuracy Of Mbes, Travis Hamilton, Jonathan Beaudoin Nov 2010

Modelling Uncertainty Caused By Internal Waves On The Accuracy Of Mbes, Travis Hamilton, Jonathan Beaudoin

Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping

A 3D ray tracing model has been developed to estimate the effects of internal waves upon the accuracy of multibeam echosounders (MBES). A case study examines the variability in these effects as a function of survey line direction and also considers the case of improving 2D ray tracing models with wave parameters derived from MBES water column imagery. Results indicate that, under certain circumstances, the effects of internal waves can prove to be a significant source of uncertainty that detracts from the ability to efficiently map the seafloor with wide swath angles.

Nnll Resummation For Qcd Cross Sections, Nikolaos Kidonakis Nov 2010

Nnll Resummation For Qcd Cross Sections, Nikolaos Kidonakis

Faculty Articles

I present results for the resummation of soft-gluon contributions to QCD hard-scattering cross sections at next-to-next-to-leading logarithm accuracy. A key ingredient is the calculation of twoloop soft anomalous dimensions for the partonic processes. Explicit expressions and applications are provided for processes that involve massless partons and/or massive quarks.

Don’T Forget Due Process: The Path Not (Yet) Taken In § 2254 Habeas Corpus Adjudications, Justin F. Marceau Nov 2010

Don’T Forget Due Process: The Path Not (Yet) Taken In § 2254 Habeas Corpus Adjudications, Justin F. Marceau

UC Law Journal

Countless articles and judicial opinions have been devoted to the task of deciphering the scope and application of the limitations on habeas corpus relief announced in the Anti- Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act of 1996 (AEDPA). Over the past ten years courts and scholars have developed an intricate framework of analysis for nearly every subsection of § 2254. The decade-long process of interpretation and commentary has been characterized by questions of statutory meaning and federalism that appear to be as irresolvable for courts as they are intriguing to academics. But in the rush to sort out the minutiae of …

Note – A Reasonable Alternative To The Reasonable Alternative Design Requirement In Products Liability Law: A Look At Pennsylvania, Andrew Meade Nov 2010

Note – A Reasonable Alternative To The Reasonable Alternative Design Requirement In Products Liability Law: A Look At Pennsylvania, Andrew Meade

UC Law Journal

The manner in which design defects should be defined has caused more controversy than any other area of products liability law. The Restatement (Third) defines a product design as defective when the foreseeable risks of harm from using a product could have been avoided if the manufacturer had used a reasonable alternative design. This definition departs from the Restatement (Second), which defines defective products as unreasonably dangerous if the product fails to meet the expectations of consumers. Without so stating, the Restatement (Third) essentially changes products liability law from a regime of strict liability to one of negligence. The debate …

Community Development Authorities, Andrew A. Painter Nov 2010

Community Development Authorities, Andrew A. Painter

University of Richmond Law Review

Today, CDAs of varying sizes and purposes have been authorized by at least fourteen Virginia localities, and approximately twenty have issued bonds." Despite progress, CDAs occupy anarea of Virginia law largely in its infancy. Case law directly related to their use remains limited, and many localities remain uncertain about their use since the unique marriage of private development and public power inherent in the CDA process has, at times, fostered controversy and apprehension. While this article does not directly address the public policy implications of using CDAs to finance infrastructure, the author hopes this review will generate further ideas for …

New Music Audiences: The Generative Impulse, David Tham Nov 2010

New Music Audiences: The Generative Impulse, David Tham

Research outputs pre 2011

This paper looks at how the net neutrality debate relates to the music recording industry and considers how new media audiences consume music as social experience and with generative impulse. As the Internet appears to force the music recording industry to re-evaluate its function and change its approach to distributing music and making money, music artistes seem to no longer need to rely on ‘record deals’ to launch or build a music career; and music audiences no longer have to rely on Top-40 radio to be told what is popular listening. This phenomenon has serious implications for new and emerging …

A Search For The Truth Or Trial By Ordeal: When Prosecutors Cross-Examine Adolescents How Should Courts Respond, Frank E. Vandervort Nov 2010

A Search For The Truth Or Trial By Ordeal: When Prosecutors Cross-Examine Adolescents How Should Courts Respond, Frank E. Vandervort

Articles

It is an axiom of the law that cross-examination is, in John Henry Wigmore's words, the "greatest legal engine ever invented for the discovery of truth." In part because of its perceived utility in getting to the truth of a matter, courts are generally reluctant, despite broad authority to do so, to step in and to govern the conduct of cross-examination. But is cross-examination invariably calculated to ascertain the truth? While most lawyers are familiar with Wigmore's famous quotation, few are familiar with the caveat that shortly follows it: "A lawyer can do anything with cross-examination.. . . He may, …

Effects Of Structured Roughness On Fluid Flow At The Microscale Level, Rebecca Noelani Wagner Nov 2010

Effects Of Structured Roughness On Fluid Flow At The Microscale Level, Rebecca Noelani Wagner

Theses

There are no theoretical differences between microscale and macroscale flows for incompressible liquids. Fluid flow and heat transfer characteristics in microchannels, however, are known to deviate from conventional macroscale theory in both the laminar and turbulent regimes. As the hydraulic diameter of a channel decreases, the effects of inherent surface roughness within the channel becomes more apparent, causing an increase in frictional losses and early transition to turbulence, as well as unpredictable heat transfer performance. Though many have experimentally, analytically, and numerically established that such deviations occur, the hypotheses attempting to characterize the deviations are sometimes contradictory and frequently employ …

A Parallel Histogram-Based Particle Filter For Object Tracking On Simd-Based Smart Cameras, Henry Medeiros, Germán Holguín, Paul J. Shin, Johnny Park Nov 2010

A Parallel Histogram-Based Particle Filter For Object Tracking On Simd-Based Smart Cameras, Henry Medeiros, Germán Holguín, Paul J. Shin, Johnny Park

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research and Publications

We present a parallel implementation of a histogram-based particle filter for object tracking on smart cameras based on SIMD processors. We specifically focus on parallel computation of the particle weights and parallel construction of the feature histograms since these are the major bottlenecks in standard implementations of histogram-based particle filters. The proposed algorithm can be applied with any histogram-based feature sets—we show in detail how the parallel particle filter can employ simple color histograms as well as more complex histograms of oriented gradients (HOG). The algorithm was successfully implemented on an SIMD processor and performs robust object tracking at up …

Hydrologic cycle intensification is an expected manifestation of a warming climate. Although positive trends in several global average quantities have been reported, no previous studies have documented broad intensification across elements of the Arctic freshwater cycle (FWC). In this study, the authors examine the character and quantitative significance of changes in annual precipitation, evapotranspiration, and river discharge across the terrestrial pan-Arctic over the past several decades from observations and a suite of coupled general circulation models (GCMs). Trends in freshwater flux and storage derived from observations across the Arctic Ocean and surrounding seas are also described.

With few exceptions, precipitation, …

Parental Investment Decisions In Response To Ambient Nest-Predation Risk Versus Actual Predation On The Prior Nest, Anna D. Chalfoun, Thomas E. Martin Nov 2010

Parental Investment Decisions In Response To Ambient Nest-Predation Risk Versus Actual Predation On The Prior Nest, Anna D. Chalfoun, Thomas E. Martin

Wildlife Biology Faculty Publications

Theory predicts that parents should invest less in dependent offspring with lower reproductive value, such as those with a high risk of predation. Moreover, high predation risk can favor reduced parental activity when such activity attracts nest predators. Yet, the ability of parents to assess ambient nest-predation risk and respond adaptively remains unclear, especially where nest-predator assemblages are diverse and potentially difficult to assess. We tested whether variation in parental investment by a multi-brooded songbird (Brewer's Sparrow, Spizella breweri) in an environment (sagebrush steppe) with diverse predators was predicted by ambient nest-predation risk or direct experience with nest predation. Variation …

Weighted Scales: American Newspaper Coverage Of The Trial Of The Major War Criminals At Nuremberg, Brian Gribben Nov 2010

Weighted Scales: American Newspaper Coverage Of The Trial Of The Major War Criminals At Nuremberg, Brian Gribben

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The Trial of the Major War Criminals at Nuremberg, the personalities associated with the trial, the verdicts rendered, and criticisms directed toward both those verdicts and the tribunal itself have generated a multitude of historical works. However, few historians have explored the American print media's coverage of the trial and even fewer have studied how a newspaper's disposition towards the trial reflected that publication's political ideology and influenced the newspaper's coverage of the trial itself. For this reason, it is the objective of this thesis to examine this neglected area, thus contributing to the scholarship of the first Nuremberg Trial. …

Milliamperage-Seconds, Kilovoltage And Patient Dose In Computed Radiography, Grace Stewart

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

Radiographic techniques were applied to a human simulation pelvis phantom with evaluations of the resultant image analyzed by a designated radiologist. Results indicate that a lower patient dose is received when coupled with an increase in the tube voltage. Images analyzed demonstrated little noise variation between images, which indicates the ability to lower patient dose while maintaining quality images.

Removal Of Low Density Sediments By Vegetative Filters, Brent M. Hall Nov 2010

Removal Of Low Density Sediments By Vegetative Filters, Brent M. Hall

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

The use of vegetative filter strips (VFS) is a longstanding best management practice for the removal of sediment and other pollutants from overland flow. Many attempts have been made to model the effectiveness of a VFS based upon soil, vegetation, and sediment properties, and also upon flow conditions, but little work has been done to investigate the reliability of the existing models when considering sediments, such as microbial pathogens, that have a lower density than the mineral sediments used for development of the models. The objectives of this study were to: 1) quantify the ability of a VFS to remove …

Spatial Similarities And Differences Of Attributes Of Three Subwatersheds Within The Middle Smoky Hill River Watershed And Their Relationship To Instream Total Suspended Solids, Dustin Fross Nov 2010

Spatial Similarities And Differences Of Attributes Of Three Subwatersheds Within The Middle Smoky Hill River Watershed And Their Relationship To Instream Total Suspended Solids, Dustin Fross

Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice

The objective of this study was to spatially analyze the attributes of three subwatersheds, Hydrological Unit Code 12 (HUC 12), of the Middle Smoky Hill River Watershed in west-central Kansas and relate the variances of the attributes to the concentrations of total suspended solids (TSS) entering the Smoky Hill River during storm events. This was accomplished by comparing land cover, including cropland, grassland, and urban factors; agricultural practices, such as tillage methods, condition of terraces, and the presence of grass waterways; geomorphology, including soil types, topography, and visible erosion; and lastly, precipitation variance. The three HUC 12s that were studied …

A Qualitative Study Of Coping In Mothers Of Children With An Autism Spectrum Disorder, Heather Miller Kuhaneck, Tajhma Burroughs, Jamie Wright, Theresa Lemanczyk, Amy Rowntree Darragh

Occupational Therapy Faculty Publications

A significant body of research exists that explores the stressors of raising a child with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). There are fewer studies, however, that examine specific effective coping strategies of mothers of children with an ASD. This qualitative study explored mothers’ perceptions of effective coping strategies for their parenting stressors. In-depth interviews were conducted with 11 mothers to inquire about their personal coping methods. Interviews were coded and emergent themes identified which included coping strategies such as “me time,” “planning,” “knowledge is power,” “sharing the load,” “lifting the restraints of labels,” and “recognizing the joys.” The information from …
