Statistical And Mathematical Modeling Versus Nhst? There’S No Competition!, Joseph Lee Rodgers Nov 2010

Statistical And Mathematical Modeling Versus Nhst? There’S No Competition!, Joseph Lee Rodgers

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Some of Robinson & Levin’s critique of Rodgers (2010) is cogent, helpful, and insightful – although limiting. Recent methodology has advanced through the development of structural equation modeling, multi-level modeling, missing data methods, hierarchical linear modeling, categorical data analysis, as well as the development of many dedicated and specific behavioral models. These methodological approaches are based on a revised epistemological system, and have emerged naturally, without the need for task forces, or even much self-conscious discussion. The original goal was neither to develop nor promote a modeling revolution. That has occurred; I documented its development and its status. Two organizing …

Effect Of Measurement Errors On The Separate And Combined Ratio And Product Estimators In Stratified Random Sampling, Housila P. Singh, Namrata Karpe Nov 2010

Effect Of Measurement Errors On The Separate And Combined Ratio And Product Estimators In Stratified Random Sampling, Housila P. Singh, Namrata Karpe

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Separate and combined ratio, product and difference estimators are introduced for population mean μY of a study variable Y using auxiliary variable X in stratified sampling when the observations are contaminated with measurement errors. The bias and mean squared error of the proposed estimators have been derived under large sample approximation and their properties are analyzed. Generalized versions of these estimators are given along with their properties.

Robust Estimators In Logistic Regression: A Comparative Simulation Study, Sanizah Ahmad, Norazan Mohamed Ramli, Habshah Midi Nov 2010

Robust Estimators In Logistic Regression: A Comparative Simulation Study, Sanizah Ahmad, Norazan Mohamed Ramli, Habshah Midi

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

The maximum likelihood estimator (MLE) is commonly used to estimate the parameters of logistic regression models due to its efficiency under a parametric model. However, evidence has shown the MLE has an unduly effect on the parameter estimates in the presence of outliers. Robust methods are put forward to rectify this problem. This article examines the performance of the MLE and four existing robust estimators under different outlier patterns, which are investigated by real data sets and Monte Carlo simulation.

Maximum Downside Semi Deviation Stochastic Programming For Portfolio Optimization Problem, Anton Abdulbasah Kamil, Khlipah Ibrahim Nov 2010

Maximum Downside Semi Deviation Stochastic Programming For Portfolio Optimization Problem, Anton Abdulbasah Kamil, Khlipah Ibrahim

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Portfolio optimization is an important research field in financial decision making. The chief character within optimization problems is the uncertainty of future returns. Probabilistic methods are used alongside optimization techniques. Markowitz (1952, 1959) introduced the concept of risk into the problem and used a mean-variance model to identify risk with the volatility (variance) of the random objective. The mean-risk optimization paradigm has since been expanded extensively both theoretically and computationally. A single stage and two stage stochastic programming model with recourse are presented for risk averse investors with the objective of minimizing the maximum downside semideviation. The models employ the …

Reducing Selection Bias In Analyzing Longitudinal Health Data With High Mortality Rates, Xian Liu, Charles C. Engel, Han Kang, Kristie L. Gore Nov 2010

Reducing Selection Bias In Analyzing Longitudinal Health Data With High Mortality Rates, Xian Liu, Charles C. Engel, Han Kang, Kristie L. Gore

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Two longitudinal regression models, one parametric and one nonparametric, are developed to reduce selection bias when analyzing longitudinal health data with high mortality rates. The parametric mixed model is a two-step linear regression approach, whereas the nonparametric mixed-effects regression model uses a retransformation method to handle random errors across time.

Differential Herbivory On Disk And Ray Flowers Of Gynomonoecious Asters And Goldenrods (Asteraceae), Robert I. Bertin, Daniel B. Connors, Holly M. Kleinman Nov 2010

Differential Herbivory On Disk And Ray Flowers Of Gynomonoecious Asters And Goldenrods (Asteraceae), Robert I. Bertin, Daniel B. Connors, Holly M. Kleinman

Biology Department Faculty Scholarship

The selective advantage of gynomonoecy, the sexual system wherein plants produce a mixture of female and bisexual flowers, is poorly understood. One hypothesis for the evolution of this system is that the absence of androecia from female flowers reduces herbivore damage to the gynoecia of these flowers. Here, we examined patterns of herbivore damage in 53 collections representing 25 species of asters and goldenrods from Massachusetts, USA. In these taxa flowers are crowded into compact capitula, with bisexual flowers occupying the centre and female flowers situated on the periphery. Damage to gynoecia of bisexual flowers was significantly greater than damage …

Some Facts And Figures From The Civil Justice System And The Public, Mary Stratton, James Cresswell, Scot Sehested Nov 2010

Some Facts And Figures From The Civil Justice System And The Public, Mary Stratton, James Cresswell, Scot Sehested

Canadian Forum on Civil Justice

The Civil Justice System and the Public (CJSP) was a collaborative research program founded on the belief that a lack of effective communication, both within the system and between the system and the public, is a significant barrier interfering with access to justice. The research involved both the public and the justice community in identifying changes in communication practice that will improve the system. The project goal was to make specific and clear recommendations for effective change that will ultimately improve access to the civil justice system by increasing the ability of the system to hear, involve, and respond to …

Collaborative Researchers Or Cold Warriors? The Origins, Activities, And Legacy Of The Smithsonian’S Institute Of Social Anthropology, A. Peter Castro

Journal of International and Global Studies

International research collaboration is increasingly popular, providing many scholarly and practical benefits. These collaborative endeavors also encounter obstacles and costs, including ones involving issues of power and professional ethics. My study seeks to widen our understanding of international collaborative social science research by examining the complex origins, diverse activities, and clouded legacy of the Smithsonian Institution’s Institute of Social Anthropology (ISA). The ISA was an innovative collaborative teaching and research program founded by Julian Steward during World War II to meet many goals, including increasing social science capacity in Latin America, expanding knowledge about contemporary cultural change, strengthening area expertise …

All Roads Lead To Najaf: Grand Ayatollah Al-Sistani’S Quiet Impact On Iraq’S 2010 Ballot And Its Aftermath, Ernesto H. Braam Ll.M

Journal of International and Global Studies

This paper explores the influence of Grand Ayatollah Sayyid Ali al-Sistani on political developments in Iraq in the post-Saddam Husayn era and examines the discourse surrounding Sistani regarding his perceived activism or “quietism” with respect to political matters. The doctrine and statements of this most prominent Shi’i religious leader are analyzed and interpreted in the context of Iraq’s contemporary, often violent, history. Specifically, Sistani’s public statements during the run-up to the 2010 parliamentary elections and their aftermath are examined for the extent to which his voice resonates among the Iraqi people. The analysis reveals that Sistani demonstrates concern for the …

The Newsvendor Problem: Review And Directions For Future Research, Yan Qin, Ruoxuan Wang, Asoo J. Vakharia, Yuwen Chen, Michelle Mh Seref

College of Business Faculty Publications

In this paper, we review the contributions to date for analyzing the newsvendor problem. Our focus is on examining the specific extensions for analyzing this problem in the context of modeling customer demand, supplier costs, and the buyer risk profile. More specifically, we analyze the impact of market price, marketing effort, and stocking quantity on customer demand; how supplier prices can serve as a coordination mechanism in a supply chain setting; integrating alternative supplier pricing policies within the newsvendor framework; and how the buyer’s risk profile moderates the newsvendor order quantity decision. For each of these areas,we summarize the current …

Increasing Returns To Marketing In Zambian Maize Markets, Gelson Tembo, Thomas S. Jayne Nov 2010

Increasing Returns To Marketing In Zambian Maize Markets, Gelson Tembo, Thomas S. Jayne

Zambia Social Science Journal

The article investigates the existence of market externalities due to increasing returns to marketing. Panel data on 198 pairs of maize markets in Zambia and correlated random effects linear and tobit estimators were used to model the relationship between market externalities and producer-to-wholesale marketing margins. This article is one of the first to explicitly account for unobserved local market heterogeneity in a developing country context. The results suggest that Zambian smallholder maize markets are substantially specialized with significant margin-reducing own externality effects and insignificant cross-externality effects. The results also indicate that the unobserved market effects exert a systematic influence on …

Growth And Regional Integration: The Case Of The Southern African Development Community, Chris Mupimpila, Patricia Funjika Nov 2010

Growth And Regional Integration: The Case Of The Southern African Development Community, Chris Mupimpila, Patricia Funjika

Zambia Social Science Journal

The neoclassical growth model is augmented with structural variables to analyse the determinants of economic growth in the Southern African Development Community. The results show that physical capital, exports, infrastructure, and human capital have a positive and significant effect on economic growth. However, inflation and external debt service have a negative but significant impact on economic growth in the region. In addition, the results suggest that the underdevelopment of the financial sector is a source of heterogeneity among member countries. Therefore, to promote growth and deeper integration in the region, it is necessary to address the underlying causes of inflation, …

Are Savings Working For Zambia’S Growth?, Chrispin Mphuka

Zambia Social Science Journal

This article analyses the effect of savings on economic growth in Zambia. Using vector auto regression, the article finds that economic growth ‘Granger’ causes domestic savings. This goes contrary to the neoclassical theory on the relationship between economic growth and savings. However, the article argues that a case of increasing domestic savings mobilization holds on the premise that doing so may influence growth indirectly by attracting partnerships with international capital thereby helping to inject new technology in the economy which is undoubtedly vital for growth. The argument is strengthened further by observing that East Asian countries have grown faster than …

Critiquing The Soul Of White Supremacy And The Spiritualities Of Whiteness: Narrative And Everyday Praxis, Dean J. Johnson

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation argues that whiteness and the oppressive structures it creates are maintained, managed, and justified by the religio-cultural tools of white Christians in greater Fort Wayne, IN. This dissertation studies the relationship among the repertoires of white Christians, racism, and white privilege by analyzing the life narratives of selfidentified white Christians. I have divided this work into two parts. Part one, comprising Chapters One and Two, outlines the frameworks, theories, and methods I use to analyze the life narratives of the white Christians that I interviewed. In Chapter One I focus on how my research builds on and contributes …

The Reduction Of Run-Off Water With An Eco-Friendly Walkway, Marcelo Punches Nov 2010

The Reduction Of Run-Off Water With An Eco-Friendly Walkway, Marcelo Punches

Horticulture and Crop Science

Water run-off can erode slopes and cause flooding in undesirable locations. With the use of permeable pavers we reduce water run-off issues. Normal pavers or concrete displace water to an unnatural location. This can lead to soil becoming too saturated with water and harm nearby plant life. Using different size rock layers will allow for fast infiltration and percolation of water. LED lights were also installed on this project to complement the permeable pavers.

Application Of Differential Evolution To Determine The Hepwm Angles Of A Three Phase Voltage Source Inverter, N Bahari, Z. Salam, Taufik Nov 2010

Application Of Differential Evolution To Determine The Hepwm Angles Of A Three Phase Voltage Source Inverter, N Bahari, Z. Salam, Taufik

Electrical Engineering

This paper presents an efficient Differential Evolution (DE) based solution for harmonic elimination pulse-width modulation (HEPWM). The aim is to solve for the set of transcendental equations that determine the switching angles of the HEPWM waveform. The objective function of the DE is designed to minimize (to near zero) the selected harmonics and at the same time allows for the fundamental component of the output voltage to be controlled independently. To verify the method, simulation is carried out using MATLAB simulink. The computed switching angles are applied to a three phase voltage source inverter. Typical results are shown and discussed.

Wittgenstein, Value Pluralism And Politics, Matthew Moore Nov 2010

Wittgenstein, Value Pluralism And Politics, Matthew Moore

Political Science

This article makes three main claims: (1) that the philosophy of Ludwig Wittgenstein, properly understood, has no normative or political implications whatsoever; (2) that scholars with otherwise dramatically conflicting interpretations of Wittgenstein should nonetheless all agree with this conclusion; and (3) that understanding the (non-) implications of Wittgenstein’s philosophy helps to answer the two motivating questions of the literature on value pluralism — whether values are (or can be) plural (yes), and whether value pluralism leads to, requires, or reveals some particular normative or political response (no).
