Atmospheric Compensation Over Case Ii Waters: Simultaneous Aerosol And Water Constituent Retrieval, Donald Taylor
Atmospheric Compensation Over Case Ii Waters: Simultaneous Aerosol And Water Constituent Retrieval, Donald Taylor
Theses
In many algorithms designed to retrieve water constituent concentrations, an assumption of negligible water-leaving radiance is made in the near infrared (NIR) wavelengths (750-950 [nm]). This allows fairly accurate atmospheric correction to be applied to the oceanic imagery. Given this assumption, it is possible to derive model estimates of aerosol type and density and compensate for its effects in other regions of the spectrum. Unfortunately this assumption is only valid in areas of very low total suspended sediment (TSS) concentrations, such as open ocean waters. Increased TSS load causes significant back-scattering within the water, increasing the water leaving signal in …
A Search For Gravitational Waves Associated With The August 2006 Timing Glitch Of The Vela Pulsar, Duncan Brown, J. Abadie
A Search For Gravitational Waves Associated With The August 2006 Timing Glitch Of The Vela Pulsar, Duncan Brown, J. Abadie
Physics - All Scholarship
The physical mechanisms responsible for pulsar timing glitches are thought to excite quasi-normal mode oscillations in their parent neutron star that couple to gravitational wave emission. In August 2006, a timing glitch was observed in the radio emission of PSR B0833-45, the Vela pulsar. At the time of the glitch, the two co-located Hanford gravitational wave detectors of the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave observatory (LIGO) were operational and taking data as part of the fifth LIGO science run (S5). We present the first direct search for the gravitational wave emission associated with oscillations of the fundamental quadrupole mode excited by a …
Concepts Of Bias And Appointments To The Governing Council Of The Canadian Institutes Of Health Research, Elaine Gibson
Concepts Of Bias And Appointments To The Governing Council Of The Canadian Institutes Of Health Research, Elaine Gibson
Articles, Book Chapters, & Popular Press
In October 2009, the academic health research community and the pharmaceutical industry were brought closer together with the appointment of Dr. Bernard Prigent, vice-president of Pfizer Canada, to the Governing Council of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR). This bridging of the two worlds has stirred up considerable debate before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Health, in letters to CMAJ and in an online petition that garnered more than 4400 signatures. There are at least two distinct and vocal camps in the debate: those categorically in favour (including the federal minister of health and the president of …
The Monster In The Closet: Misperception Of Mental Illness, Sarah Alexandra Bernstein
The Monster In The Closet: Misperception Of Mental Illness, Sarah Alexandra Bernstein
Honors Thesis and Capstone Projects
Mental illness affects all major aspects of an individual‟s life. From basic needs such as shelter and employment, to interactions with family, partners, and friends, the diagnosis represents likely difficulties due to stigma and negative attitudes. Efforts to bring forth the recognition and acceptance of mental illness in the United States, as well as around the world, start by confronting misconceptions through examination of causes. Increased access to needed resources and funding for treatment are also needed and may be accomplished through the use of media, education, and rising voices lobbying for the rights of people with mental illness.
Coaching Efficacy With Academic Leaders: A Phenomenological Investigation, Deanna Lee Vansickel-Peterson
Coaching Efficacy With Academic Leaders: A Phenomenological Investigation, Deanna Lee Vansickel-Peterson
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of this psychological phenomenological research was to understand the efficacy of life coaching from the perspective of academic leaders. To date, not one investigation or attempt has been made towards the above stated purpose. This study includes a theoretical overview and a review of the coaching literature from Socrates (469-399 BC) to current day Humanistic theory presented in part by Roger (1902-1987). This process included data collection from five academic leaders who have been coached for at least two years. Levels of analysis of 365 statements, quote and/or comments produced finding of efficacy in life coaching with academic …

Recent Uplift Of The Burica Peninsula, Panama And Costa Rica, Recorded By Marine Terraces, Daniel Davidson
Recent Uplift Of The Burica Peninsula, Panama And Costa Rica, Recorded By Marine Terraces, Daniel Davidson
Earth and Environmental Geosciences Student Honors Theses
Deformation and uplift of the Burica Peninsula along the Panama-Costa Rica border results from eastward migration of the Panama Triple Junction (PTJ); the boundary between three tectonic plates. As the triple junction migrates to the southeast at ~55 mm/yr along the Middle America Trench (MAT), the Panama Fracture Zone (PFZ), separating the Cocos and Nazca plates, subducts under the Panama microplate. Differences in the thickness of the plates across the PFZ, as well as the rate and angle of subduction between the Cocos and Nazca plates, cause the Panama microplate to step up and over the Cocos plate. A flight …

Opportunities For Nebraska In Future Carbon Markets: Final Technical Report For Ncesr Project 3-#303, Richard K. Perrin, Adam J. Liska, Lilyan E. Fulginiti
Opportunities For Nebraska In Future Carbon Markets: Final Technical Report For Ncesr Project 3-#303, Richard K. Perrin, Adam J. Liska, Lilyan E. Fulginiti
Department of Agricultural Economics: Presentations, Working Papers, and Gray Literature
This study was funded to explore potential opportunities for Nebraska in future carbon markets, most explicitly those opportunities related to the possibility of replacing fossil fuels with biomass at Nebraska corn ethanol plants. The most direct and significant finding is that biomass-fired CHP (combined heat and power) technology is not economically viable for Nebraska corn ethanol plants under current conditions. We estimate in the study that corn stover price would have to be at least $50 per ton of dry matter for the requisite amounts to be delivered to any of the three ethanol plant locations considered (Adams, Norfolk and …

Inferential Methods For High-Throughput Methylation Data, Maria Capparuccini
Inferential Methods For High-Throughput Methylation Data, Maria Capparuccini
Theses and Dissertations
The role of abnormal DNA methylation in the progression of disease is a growing area of research that relies upon the establishment of sound statistical methods. The common method for declaring there is differential methylation between two groups at a given CpG site, as summarized by the difference between proportions methylated db=b1-b2, has been through use of a Filtered Two Sample t-test, using the recommended filter of 0.17 (Bibikova et al., 2006b). In this dissertation, we performed a re-analysis of the data used in recommending the threshold by fitting a mixed-effects ANOVA model. It was determined that the 0.17 filter …

An Exploration Of The Knowledge And Attitudes Towards Breastfeeding Among A Sample Of Chinese Mothers In Ireland, Qianling Zhou, Katherine Younger, John Kearney
Articles
Background: Psychological factors are important in influencing breastfeeding practices. This retrospective study explored knowledge and attitudes related to breastfeeding of Chinese mothers living in Ireland. Methods: A cross-sectional self-administrated survey written in Chinese was distributed to a convenience sample of 322 immigrant Chinese mothers mainly via Chinese supermarkets and Chinese language schools in Dublin, with the involvement of the snowball method to increase sample size. Maternal breastfeeding knowledge and attitudes were described, their associations with socio-demographic variables were explored by Chi-square analysis, and their independent associations with breastfeeding behaviours were estimated by binary logistic regression analyses. Results: In spite of …

Patents (University of Northern Iowa)
A virtual coatings application system has several features to enhance the realism of simulated spray painting. The system generally includes a display screen on which is defined a virtual surface (such as a truck door) that is intended to be virtually painted or coated by the user. Alternatively, the system includes a head-mounted display unit that displays a virtual spray painting environment in which the virtual surface is defined. The user operates an instrumented spray gun controller that outputs one or more signals representing data as to the status of the controls on the spray gun controller. The system also …

The Problem Of The Commons: Still Unsettled After 100 Years, Robert Stavins
The Problem Of The Commons: Still Unsettled After 100 Years, Robert Stavins
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
The problem of the commons is more important to our lives and thus more central to economics than a century ago when Katharine Coman led off the first issue of the American Economic Review. As the U.S. and other economies have grown, the carrying-capacity of the planet - in regard to natural resources and environmental quality — has become a greater concern, particularly for common-property and open-access resources. The focus of this article is on some important, unsettled problems of the commons. Within the realm of natural resources, there are special challenges associated with renewable resources, which are frequently characterized …
On The Road To A Unified Market For Energy Efficiency: The Contribution Of White Certificates Schemes, Louis-Gaëtan Giraudet, Dominique Finon
On The Road To A Unified Market For Energy Efficiency: The Contribution Of White Certificates Schemes, Louis-Gaëtan Giraudet, Dominique Finon
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
White certificates schemes mandate competing energy companies to promote energy efficiency with flexibility mechanisms, including the trading of energy savings. So far, stylized facts are lacking and outcomes are mainly country‐specific. By comparing results of British, Italian and French experiences, we attempt to identify the core determinants of their performances. We show that (i) white certificates schemes are depicted in theoretical works as mandatory subsidies on energy efficiency goods recovered by an end‐use energy tax, whereby white certificates exchanges are not a central feature; (ii) at current stages, existing schemes are cost‐effective and economically efficient, with large discrepancies though; (iii) …
The Impact Of Protest Responses In Choice Experiments, Melina Barrio, Maria Loureiro
The Impact Of Protest Responses In Choice Experiments, Melina Barrio, Maria Loureiro
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Not much attention has been given to protest responses in choice experiments (CE). Using follow-up statements, we are able to identify protest responses and compute welfare estimates with and without the inclusion of such protest responses. We conclude that protest responses are fairly common in CE, and their analysis affects the statistical performance of the empirical models. In particular, when the sample is corrected by protests, our results come from utility consistent models. Thus, future choice experiments should consider the role of protest responses as contingent valuation studies have done.
Valuation Of Linkages Between Climate Change, Biodiversity And Productivity Of European Agro-Ecosystems, Ruslana Rachel Palatnik, Paulo A.L.D. Nunes
Valuation Of Linkages Between Climate Change, Biodiversity And Productivity Of European Agro-Ecosystems, Ruslana Rachel Palatnik, Paulo A.L.D. Nunes
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
It is clear that climate change involves changes in temperature and precipitation and therefore directly affects land productivity. However, this is not the only channel for climatic change to affect agro-systems. Biodiversity is subject to climatic fluctuations and in turn may alter land productivity too. Firstly, biodiversity is an input into agro-ecosystems. Secondly, biodiversity supports the functioning of these systems (e.g. the balancing of the nutrient cycle). Thirdly, agro-systems also host important wildlife species which, though not always, play a functional role in land productivity, nonetheless constitute important sources of landscape amenities. The present paper illustrates a unique attempt to …
Sovereign Wealth Funds: Form And Function In The 21st Century, Gordon L. Clark, Ashby H. B. Monk
Sovereign Wealth Funds: Form And Function In The 21st Century, Gordon L. Clark, Ashby H. B. Monk
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
As representatives of nation-states in global financial markets, sovereign wealth funds (SWFs) share a common form and many functions. Arguably their form and functions owe as much to a shared (global) moment of institutional formation as they owe their form and functions to the hegemony of Anglo-American finance over the late 20th and early 21st centuries. We distinguish between the immediate future for SWFs in the aftermath of the global financial crisis, and two possible long-term scenarios; one of which sees SWFs becoming financial goliaths dominating global markets, while the other sees SWFs morphing into nation-state development institutions that intermediate …
The European Emission Trading Scheme And Renewable Energy Policies: Credible Targets For Incredible Results?, Simone Borghesi
The European Emission Trading Scheme And Renewable Energy Policies: Credible Targets For Incredible Results?, Simone Borghesi
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
This paper discusses the merits and limits of the recent European energy policy aimed at reducing carbon emissions, devoting particular attention to the European Trading System of carbon permits and to the measures that the European Union has adopted to promote renewable energy sources. From the comparison of past goals and present results, it is argued that more credible targets for carbon emission reductions and renewable shares would probably help the transition towards an alternative energy system and the necessary reduction of greenhouse gases.

Redd In The Carbon Market: A General Equilibrium Analysis, Francesco Bosello, Fabio Eboli, Ramiro Parrado, Renato Rosa
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Deforestation is a major source of CO2 emissions, accounting for around 17% of total annual anthropogenic carbon release. While the cost estimates of reducing deforestation rates vary considerably depending on model assumptions, it is widely accepted that emissions reductions from avoided deforestation consist of a relatively low cost mitigation option. Halting deforestation is therefore not only a major ecological challenge, but also a great opportunity to cost effectively reduce climate change negative impacts. In this paper we analyze the impact of introducing avoided deforestation credits into the European carbon market using a multiregional Computable General Equilibrium model – the ICES …
Repeated Cheap-Talk Games Of Common Interest Between A Decision-Maker And An Expert Of Unknown Statistical Bias, Irene Valsecchi
Repeated Cheap-Talk Games Of Common Interest Between A Decision-Maker And An Expert Of Unknown Statistical Bias, Irene Valsecchi
Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei Working Papers
Two agents are engaged in a joint activity that yields a common perperiod payoff at two rounds of play. The expert announces the probability that the current state of the world is low, instead of high, at each stage. Having received the report of the expert, the decision-maker takes action at every period according to his posterior beliefs. At the end of each round of play, the true current state is verifiable. The distinctive assumption of the paper is that the decision-maker makes a subjective appraisal of the expert’s reliability: he considers the expert’s true forecasts as the outcomes of …
