Donepezil And Galanin Interactions In An Animal Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Jonathan J. Sabbagh Dec 2010

Donepezil And Galanin Interactions In An Animal Model Of Alzheimer’S Disease, Jonathan J. Sabbagh

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder marked by a progressive loss of cognitive function. One of the neurobiological hallmarks of AD is a progressive loss of cholinergic neurons and a decrease in the amount of acetylcholine in the brain. Pharmacological therapies have targeted the cholinergic system, specifically first-line, palliative treatment using acetylcholinesterase (AChE) inhibitors, such as donepezil. Donepezil has been shown to increase cholinergic tone and ameliorate some of the cognitive deficits in AD patients. Galanin, a neuropeptide that inhibits the evoked release of several neurotransmitters including acetylcholine as well as modulates seveal intracellular cascades, is overexpressed in AD …

The Multiple-Choice Concept Map (Mccm): An Interactive Computer-Based Assessment Method, Ioan C. Sas

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

This research attempted to bridge the gap between cognitive psychology and educational measurement (Mislevy, 2008; Leighton & Gierl, 2007; Nichols, 1994; Messick, 1989; Snow & Lohman, 1989) by using cognitive theories from working memory (Baddeley, 1986; Miyake & Shah, 1999; Grimley & Banner, 2008), multimedia learning (Mayer, 2001), and cognitive load (Chandler and Sweller, 1991, 1992; Cerpa, Chandler, & Sweller., 1996) to identify potential design weaknesses of traditional select-and-fill-in (SAFI) concept map assessment and then to guide the design of the new and improved multiple-choice concept map (MCCM) assessment method. The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the …

Erisa & Uncertainty, Brendan S. Maher, Peter K. Stris Dec 2010

Erisa & Uncertainty, Brendan S. Maher, Peter K. Stris

Faculty Scholarship

In the United States, retirement income and health insurance are largely provided through private promises made incident to employment. These “benefit promises” are governed by a statute called ERISA, which many healthcare and pension scholars argue is the cause of fundamental problems with our nation’s health and retirement policy. Inevitably, however, they advance narrowly tailored proposals to amend the statute. This occurs because of the widely-held view that reform should leave undisturbed the underlying core of the statute. This Article develops a theory of ERISA designed to illustrate the unavoidable need for structural reform.

Consumers' Attitudes Towards Traceability Of Food And Meat Products, Kulmani Rana Dec 2010

Consumers' Attitudes Towards Traceability Of Food And Meat Products, Kulmani Rana

Honors Theses

The purpose of this research is to survey consumers on their support for Radio Frequency Identification tags on fruit and vegetable containers and their willingness to pay for traceability of meat products. Ironically, there is no single universally accepted definition of traceability. There is evidence that the US has fallen behind its major trading partners in terms of implementing a nationwide food traceability system. Researchers in the past have concluded that consumers' WTP for traceability increases significantly when bundled with additional assurances. There is real concern among consumers about implementation of traceability systems in food as well as meat products. …

Politics And Civil Procedure Rulemaking: Reflections On Experience, Paul D. Carrington Dec 2010

Politics And Civil Procedure Rulemaking: Reflections On Experience, Paul D. Carrington

Duke Law Journal

This Article is a reflection on personal experience as well as an account of what has happened to the Federal Rules of Civil Procedure in the most recent quarter century It observes that the Supreme Court of the United States has assigned to itself a role in making procedural law inconsistent with the Rules Enabling Act of 1934 or any more-recent utterance of Congress This procedural law made by the Court is responsive to the desire of business interests to weaken the ability of citizens to enforce laws enacted to protect them from business misconduct The Article concludes with the …

The Mglur2/3 Agonist Ly397268 Improves Morphometric And Behavioral Outcomes In R6/2 Huntington's Disease Mice, Dennis Craig Lafferty Dec 2010

The Mglur2/3 Agonist Ly397268 Improves Morphometric And Behavioral Outcomes In R6/2 Huntington's Disease Mice, Dennis Craig Lafferty

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

A prominent theory for the pathology of Huntington's Disease (HD) is the excitotoxic injury to the striatum. Continual exposure of ionotropic NMDA receptors to glutamate from the cortex can be excitotoxic in HD and leave striatal neurons vulnerable to damage. Activation of presynaptic mGluR2/3 by an agonist dampens glutamate release from corticostriatal terminals. Treatments that target excitoxicity and oxidative stress thus may improve some of the symptoms in HD patients and it is therefore logical to pursue therapies aimed in this direction. LY379268 is an inviting mGluR2/3 agonist that has been shown to be neuroprotective in hypoxic and ischemic injuries …

Majoritarian Difficulty And Theories Of Constitutional Decision Making, Michael C. Dorf Dec 2010

Majoritarian Difficulty And Theories Of Constitutional Decision Making, Michael C. Dorf

Cornell Law Faculty Publications

Recent scholarship in political science and law challenges the view that judicial review in the United States poses what Alexander Bickel famously called the "counter-majoritarian difficulty." Although courts do regularly invalidate state and federal action on constitutional grounds, they rarely depart substantially from the median of public opinion. When they do so depart, if public opinion does not eventually come in line with the judicial view, constitutional amendment, changes in judicial personnel, and/or changes in judicial doctrine typically bring judicial understandings closer to public opinion. But if the modesty of courts dissolves Bickel's worry, it raises a distinct one: Are …

The Impact Of Network Parameters On The Quality Of Voice Calls In Voice Over Internet Protocol (Voip) Services, Olugbenga Bamidele Olumuyiwa Dec 2010

The Impact Of Network Parameters On The Quality Of Voice Calls In Voice Over Internet Protocol (Voip) Services, Olugbenga Bamidele Olumuyiwa

Theses (Pre-2016)

Many residential as well as business customers have been switching to Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) phone services. VoIP phone services are based on the transmission of voice over packet switched IP networks. VoIP customers use their internet connection not only to connect to the Internet but also to make phone calls. VoIP service providers have always faced the challenge of providing customers with good call quality even though the IP network that carries call traffic does not provide any Quality of Service (QoS) guarantees. Delays, packet loss, jitter, and out of sequence packets are some sources of poor VoIP …

Reducing Alcohol Risk In Adjudicated Male College Students: Further Validation Of A Group Motivational Enhancement Intervention, Joseph W. Labrie, Jessica Cail, Eric R. Pedersen, Savannah Migliuri

Heads Up!

This study examined the effectiveness of a single-session group motivational enhancement alcohol intervention on adjudicated male college students. Over two sequential academic years, 230 students sanctioned by the university for alcohol-related infractions attended a 60- to 75-minute group intervention. The intervention consisted of a timeline followback, social norms education, decisional balance for behavioral change, blood alcohol content (BAC) information, expectancy challenge, and generation of behavioral goals. Participants were followed weekly for three months and showed reductions in drinking (29%) and alcohol-related consequences (32%) at three-month follow-up. The intervention was successful in reducing drinking for both first-year students and upperclassmen, with …

Recognition Of Posed And Spontaneous Dynamic Smiles In Younger And Older Adults, Nora A. Murphy, Jonathan M. Lehrfeld, Derek M. Isaacowitz Dec 2010

Recognition Of Posed And Spontaneous Dynamic Smiles In Younger And Older Adults, Nora A. Murphy, Jonathan M. Lehrfeld, Derek M. Isaacowitz

Psychological Science Faculty Works

In two studies, we investigated age effects in the ability to recognize dynamic posed and spontaneous smiles. Study 1 found that both younger and older adult participants were above-chance in their ability to distinguish between posed and spontaneous younger adult smiles. Study 2 found that younger adult participant performance declined when judging a combination of both younger and older adult target smiles, while older adult participants outperformed younger adult participants in distinguishing between posed and spontaneous smiles. A synthesis of results across the two studies showed a small-to-medium age effect (d = −0.40) suggesting an older adult advantage when …

How Memory Affects Sense Of Self: Stories Of Traumatic Brain Injury, Leah Smith Dec 2010

How Memory Affects Sense Of Self: Stories Of Traumatic Brain Injury, Leah Smith

Southern Anthropologist

(2010 Undergraduate Prize Winner.) How does memory affect sense of self? For traumatic brain injury (TBI) survivors, memory has a large impact on sense of self. Some cannot remember who they were before the injury and have to rely on others’ memories or photographs to reinvent their sense of self. Others can remember who they were before the accident, but feel they are vastly different than their old self. How do TBI survivors negotiate reconstructing identities and sense of self when memories play a disconnecting role? Through this process, storytelling can help survivors recreate a sense of self that is …

'You Have To Go North To Find The South': Situating Central Florida In The South For Birth Research, Erica Gibson

Southern Anthropologist

This paper reports on situating Central Florida as a part of the South for birth research among midwives, a physician, and their clients. A comparison is made between historical and modern beliefs about what is represented by Southern values and ideals, and how the women and birth practitioners in this study do or do not conform to those ideals.

Disrupted But Not Destroyed: Fictive-Kinship Networks Among Black Educators In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Daniella Ann Cook Dec 2010

Disrupted But Not Destroyed: Fictive-Kinship Networks Among Black Educators In Post-Katrina New Orleans, Daniella Ann Cook

Southern Anthropologist

Drawing on Adkins’ (1997) notion of reform as colonization and using ethnographic data from African American teachers in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina, this article discusses how black educators’ fictive-kinship (Fordham 1996, Chatters, Taylor, and Jayadoky 1994, Stack 1976) networks have been altered in the changing landscape of reform. I argue that the importance of fictive-kinship relationships among educators and students was ignored in school-reform efforts in post-Katrina New Orleans. Post-Katrina school reforms disrupted, but did not destroy, these fictive-kinship networks. I discuss three themes: (1) fictive-kinship networks created before Katrina cultivated an environment centered on cooperation, collaboration, and solidarity, …

An Investigation Into Predictors Of Middle School Mathematics Achievement As Measured By The Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests, Cheryl Thomasson Dec 2010

An Investigation Into Predictors Of Middle School Mathematics Achievement As Measured By The Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests, Cheryl Thomasson

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to locate variables from 2006 and 2007 Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Test (CRCT) that could predict mathematics performance on the 2008 CRCT for a cohort of 449 students in two middle schools in Murray County in north Georgia. The student population was 80% Caucasian, 17% Hispanic, and 3% other. It was hypothesized that the predictors would be influenced by the high level of students eligible for free or reduced lunch. Logistic regression was applied to three data sets, all students, students from Bagley and Gladden Middle Schools. Sixth-grade CRCT mathematics percent correct was the only …

Winslow Elliptic Smoothing Equations Extended To Apply To General Regions Of An Unstructured Mesh, James Steven Masters Dec 2010

Winslow Elliptic Smoothing Equations Extended To Apply To General Regions Of An Unstructured Mesh, James Steven Masters

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

In any engineering endeavor, it is important to have the ability to efficiently and intelligently break up a region of interest in order to explore and investigate the interesting and dynamic aspects of the system enclosed in the region. In the field of fluid mechanics - and, in particular, computational fluid dynamics - this region breakup (known as discretization) has traditionally been done using structured meshes but, because of their flexibility with capturing real-world geometry, unstructured meshes are being increasingly utilized. Not surprisingly, techniques that have traditionally been reserved for structured meshes are migrating to the world of unstructured meshing …

Case Jp: Twenty Experiments On A Person With Congenital Prosopagnosia And Inability To Experience Visual Imagery From Birth, Leanne Walker Dec 2010

Case Jp: Twenty Experiments On A Person With Congenital Prosopagnosia And Inability To Experience Visual Imagery From Birth, Leanne Walker

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Congenital Prosopagnosia and inability to experience visual imagery was investigated through administration of neuropsychological, face processing and visual imagery tests on a single patient, JP. JP had no general intellectual impairment, no problems affecting visual and spatial abilities and had little problems affecting overall memory. She was impaired on unfamiliar face matching, perception of eye gaze and famous face recognition, and was in the normal range for facial expression recognition; thus suggesting that JP is of the “prosopagnosic” type. Subjective vividness and spontaneous use of imagery was rated as extremely poor and performance of standard tests of visual imagery yielded …

Holocene Sea-Level Changes In The Bristol Channel - Evidence From Porlock, Somerset, Uk, Thomas Lawrence Dec 2010

Holocene Sea-Level Changes In The Bristol Channel - Evidence From Porlock, Somerset, Uk, Thomas Lawrence

The Plymouth Student Scientist

The surface distribution and elevation of contemporary intertidal foraminifera can be used as modern analogues to reconstruct former sea levels based on fossil foraminifera assemblages. A transfer function for southwest tide level is applied to fossil foraminiferal assemblages within a sediment core from Porlock Marsh, Somerset, U.K., in order to produce quantified altitudes of palaeo-sea level (‘indicative meanings’). The indicative meanings of fossil foraminifera are compared to the altitudes of two previously published Holocene sea level index points from Porlock. The indicative meanings of fossil foraminifera are also used to provide a palaeo-environmental history of Porlock Marsh. The reconstruction is …

The Effect Of Different Dosages Of Caffeine On Time To Exhaustion In Prolonged Exercise In Trained Athletes (A Meta Analysis), Kristina Marshall Dec 2010

The Effect Of Different Dosages Of Caffeine On Time To Exhaustion In Prolonged Exercise In Trained Athletes (A Meta Analysis), Kristina Marshall

The Plymouth Student Scientist

Background The world anti doping organisation removed caffeine from the banned list of substances in 2004; yet, research shows over recent years caffeine has become one of the most widely used ergogenic aids by athletes in the UK. This analysis investigates one of the suggested ergogenic benefits of caffeine, increasing time to exhaustion, and whether this effect relates to specific dosages of caffeine ingested before exercise. Objectives To assess the effects of two different dosages of caffeine on trained athlete’s time to exhaustion in endurance exercise. Search methods “caffeine” and “time to exhaustion” were entered into Pubmed, Scirus and Google …

Depth And Time Related Variations Of Microbial Communiites In An Emergent Freshwater Wetland, Amy Jenkins Dec 2010

Depth And Time Related Variations Of Microbial Communiites In An Emergent Freshwater Wetland, Amy Jenkins

Theses and Dissertations

Soils, and the microbial communities contained within them, are vital for most chemical, physical, and biological processes. This study investigated how microbial community structure responded to environmental changes, such as hydrology, across vertical space (depth) and time in an emergent fresh water wetland. Research was conducted in a non-tidal freshwater wetland along the James River (Charles City County, Virginia) by establishing plots in two areas that experienced different hydrologic regimes and plant communities. Soil cores (30 cm) were collected monthly from January 2008 to February 2009, and then every two to three months thereafter until October 2009, for a total …

Utility Of The General Validity Scale Model: Development Of Validity Scales For The Co-Parenting Behavior Questionnaire, Kimberly Parker Dec 2010

Utility Of The General Validity Scale Model: Development Of Validity Scales For The Co-Parenting Behavior Questionnaire, Kimberly Parker

Theses and Dissertations

Validity scales for child-report measures are necessary tools in clinical and forensic settings in which major decisions affecting the child and family are in question. Currently there is no standard model for the development and testing of such validity scales. The present study focused on 1) creating the General Validity Scale (GVS) Model to serve as a guide in validity scale development and 2) applying this model in the development of validity scales for the Co-parenting Behavior Questionnaire (CBQ), a child-report measure of parenting and co-parenting behaviors for children whose parents are divorced. Study 1 used the newly developed GVS …

Depmap: Dependency Mapping Of Applications Using Operating System Events, Ryan Matteson Dec 2010

Depmap: Dependency Mapping Of Applications Using Operating System Events, Ryan Matteson

Master's Theses

Applications are increasingly hosted on shared, heterogeneous distributed systems. Web applications and “cloud” computing are broad examples of this, but even relatively isolated servers often depend on shared, network-accessible resources. This standardization around service layers abstracts aspects of service delivery, but often entails a large collection of component systems. The complexity that is abstracted from a functional perspective can give rise to runtime issues. Critical issues arising out of this model include resource utilization (sizing, capacity testing, resource monitoring) and dependency management (identifying and monitoring dependencies between components and potential for impact to an application).

This thesis presents an automated …

Legal Reading And Success In Law School: The Reading Strategies Of Law Students With Attention Deficit Disorder (Add)., Leah M. Christensen Dec 2010

Legal Reading And Success In Law School: The Reading Strategies Of Law Students With Attention Deficit Disorder (Add)., Leah M. Christensen

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

The new reality in legal education is that a certain percentage of our students will come to us with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) or with another learning disability, either disclosed or undisclosed. Yet there has been little empirical research on how law students with learning disabilities read and understand the law. This study examines how three law students with ADD read a judicial opinion. The results suggest a relationship between successful law school performance and the use of problematizing and rhetorical reading strategies, and between less successful law school performance and the use of default reading strategies. Further, the results …

How Texas Can Better Protect Seniors From Financial Abuse And Mismanagement Associated With Alzheimer's Disease., Hayden Colby

The Scholar: St. Mary's Law Review on Race and Social Justice

Alzheimer’s Disease is a prominent terminal ailment affecting a vast number of the world’s senior citizens. The Disease causes a cognitive deterioration in brain cells which results in limited or no ability to do basic activities. Texas has seen a disproportionate amount of Alzheimer’s cases due to senior citizens relocating upon retirement. Alzheimer’s Disease costs American citizens thousands of dollars in healthcare services every year. In the early stages of Alzheimer’s, one loses his or her ability to manage their finances. This leads to a lack of independence and a greater susceptibility to financial abuse by those wanting to take …

Risk Identification And Project Approval: An Importance-Performance Analysis Of Taxonomy-Based Risks In Information Technology Projects, Tiago Ferreira Da Silva Dec 2010

Risk Identification And Project Approval: An Importance-Performance Analysis Of Taxonomy-Based Risks In Information Technology Projects, Tiago Ferreira Da Silva

Theses

The dissemination of project management practices is consolidating project as a great mean of achieving an organization's strategic plan (PMI, 2008, p. 10). But there are no resources and funds available to all, and competition among alternative projects is increasing. Funding institutions, government agencies, and credit rating organizations started considering project risk in project evaluation, instead of only using financial metrics such as ROI (Return on Investment) or NPV (Net Present Value). In order to obtain resources needed to implement projects, and thus contribute to an organization's objectives, it is necessary to identify the risks that have greater influence on …
