Building Citizens Or Building Nations? Alternative Visions For Learning History In Germany And The United States: The Geschichtswettbewerb Des Bundespraesidenten And National History Day, 1974-1984, Crystal Johnson
Master's Theses
The German philanthropist Kurt Körber and the American historian David Van Tassel envisioned a future where students engaged in discovering the sources and interpreting the past for themselves rather than reciting facts filtered by a textbook or teacher. Their ideas developed into two strikingly similar programs: the Geschichtswettbewerb des Bundespräsidenten and National History Day. These endeavors became models for similar efforts in many other countries. This comparative history argues that such programs offer provocative insights into the civic nature and purpose of history education. Inquiry learning and enhanced access to sources gave students opportunities to ask their own questions of …
Reorientation Through Interruption: On The Relation Of Immanuel Kant's Modes Of Egoism To His Critical Philosophy, Giancarlo Tarantino
Reorientation Through Interruption: On The Relation Of Immanuel Kant's Modes Of Egoism To His Critical Philosophy, Giancarlo Tarantino
Master's Theses
The relationship between Immanuel Kant's anthropology, and his Critical philosophy has proven to be a notoriously difficult problem, both for specifically Kantian scholarship as well as for philosophy in general. This thesis attempts to investigate this relationship by showing the importance of Kant's modes of egoism at work in his three Critiques. In doing so this thesis will highlight the phenomena of interruption, and orientation as playing crucial interpretive roles for parsing out the aforementioned relationship. I will try to show that anthropology and Critique mutually interrupt, and re-orient one another's specific contributions to the major themes of Kant's thinking.
Predictors Of Mental Health Outcomes Among Foster Care Children Receiving Community-Based Services, Alison Merri Dunleavy
Predictors Of Mental Health Outcomes Among Foster Care Children Receiving Community-Based Services, Alison Merri Dunleavy
Master's Theses
Historically, children served in the foster care system experience less favorable mental health outcomes compared to those in the general population (Anctil, McCubbin, & Pecora, 2006; Burns et al., 2004; Garland et al., 2001; Zima, Bussing, Yang, & Berlin, 2000). As a result, the child welfare system has been described as a "de facto public behavioral health care system" (Lyons & Rogers, 2004), prompting state child welfare agencies to seek to put systems and policies in place to serve the needs of these youth, such as Illinios' statewide community-based program, System of Care (SOC), designed to provide multi-modal services to …
Affection, Anger, Or Ambivalence? An Examination Of Tunisian And Two Groups Of American Students' Attitudes Toward American Politics And Popular Culture, Jonya Leverett
Master's Theses
Attitude ambivalence is the attitude actor's simultaneous possession of both negative and positive affect toward an attitude object. The competing affect produces tension, creating attitude ambivalence. In the present project, the attitude object is the United States of America. Students in Tunisia (a predominately Muslim nation) were asked specific questions about American foreign policy and American popular culture (n = 17). These two aspects of the `America' attitude object are expected to produce attitude ambivalence as the Tunisian students should express positive affect toward American popular culture and negative affect toward American foreign policy. A pencil and paper survey featuring …
The City Imagined: Race, Place And Identity In The Making Of Urban Church, Jessica M. Barron
The City Imagined: Race, Place And Identity In The Making Of Urban Church, Jessica M. Barron
Master's Theses
In this study, I will explore the racial and urban imaginary of church leaders and members seeking to create an authentic and relevant church for Chicago's unchurched, young-adult urbanite. In their quest to develop a relevant church, the varied imaginations of the city of Chicago by leaders, volunteers and members come to the forefront. How these imaginations are fostered, incorporated, rebelled against or dismissed brings to light the politics of imagining the imagined city. This paper will discuss these varied, dueling, and sometimes contradictory imaginations informing the construction, operation, and branding campaigns of Urban Church. Particular focus will be paid …
Erasing Mexican Chicago: The Role Of Community Based Organizations And Immigrant Networks In The Gentrifying Neighborhood Of Pilsen, David Orta
Master's Theses
This study explores the effects of gentrification in Chicago's Pilsen neighborhood, a historic port of entry for Mexican immigrants and a basin for community organization and other resources. The research questions of this study first query the effects of gentrification on the informal immigrant networks that make Pilsen a site for community resources for new immigrants. Second, the study explores the effects of gentrification on community-based organizations in a rapidly changing environment. As the racial and economic demographics of the neighborhood shift, community based organizations must adapt. Finally, this study examines the relationship between neighborhood residents and community based organizations. …
Fish Assemblage Structure In Natural, Channelized, And Restored Sections Of Nippersink Creek, Mchenry County, Illinois, Sarah Ann Zack
Fish Assemblage Structure In Natural, Channelized, And Restored Sections Of Nippersink Creek, Mchenry County, Illinois, Sarah Ann Zack
Master's Theses
Degradation of aquatic habitats and loss of biodiversity are growing concerns of natural resource managers and the general public. Channelization, the common historical practice of straightening streams and rivers for agricultural interests, has had profound detrimental effects on the biodiversity of lotic fish assemblages. Nippersink Creek, McHenry County, IL is a twenty-three mile stream that flows through an area valued for its fish, wildlife, and invertebrate biodiversity. Although a portion of the stream was channelized in the 1950's, restoration efforts by the McHenry County Conservation District have recently restored historical meanders. Nevertheless, efforts to restore streams and rivers to their …
Schools As Sites Of Race Relations And Intercultural Tension, Fethi Mansouri, Louise Jenkins
Schools As Sites Of Race Relations And Intercultural Tension, Fethi Mansouri, Louise Jenkins
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Australia’s education system endeavours to provide an environment in which students can learn in a safe and comfortable manner, free of fear of verbal or physical abuse. However, for many schools, the ability to create this safe environment has been undermined by a recent rise in society-wide intercultural tensions that inevitably permeate the school boundary. Empirical data from a national project about racism among Australian youth provides evidence that these intercultural tensions are generating an unsettling level of verbal, and in some cases, physical abuse in Australian secondary schools. These project findings inform the discussion presented in this paper that …
Barriers To Providing Physical Education And Physical Activity In Victorian State Secondary Schools, Kate A. Jenkinson, Amanada C. Benson
Barriers To Providing Physical Education And Physical Activity In Victorian State Secondary Schools, Kate A. Jenkinson, Amanada C. Benson
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
An on-line questionnaire was completed by 115 physical education teachers to establish the barriers to their implementation of physical education in Victorian state secondary schools. In addition, the barriers perceived by teachers to impact on students’ participation in school-based physical education and physical activity were examined. The barriers to the provision of physical education were found to be largely institutional, although two-thirds of respondents recognised their own difficulties in engaging students when teaching as potential obstacles to student participation. Students were also perceived to be influenced by their own (45 per cent) and their peers (62 per cent) low levels …

Examining Perspectives Of Entry-Level Teacher Candidates: A Comparative Study, Ping Liu
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This study examines entry-level teacher candidates on career choice, professional goals and view on a teacher’s role. The candidates were enrolled in two elementary teacher education programs in the People’s Republic of China and the United States of America. A total of 66 participants responded in writing to three questions about why they decided to become a teacher, what they wanted to accomplish as a teacher, and how they viewed the role of a teacher. Major differences were found between these groups in their responses to the first two questions but the participants used similar terms to describe a teacher’s …
Fostering Nonverbal Immediacy And Teacher Identity Through An Acting Course In English Teacher Education, Kemal Sinan Özmen
Fostering Nonverbal Immediacy And Teacher Identity Through An Acting Course In English Teacher Education, Kemal Sinan Özmen
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This research study focuses on integrating acting theories in pre-service English teacher education so as to improve nonverbal immediacy behavior and to contribute to the development process of teacher identity. Studies on incorporation of acting literature into teacher education provide educators with some significant findings clearly indicating that certain teacher competences can be fostered effectively by benefiting from acting theories and practices. While focusing on different aspects and competences of the teaching profession, these studies are in a general accord with the idea that teacher education programs should give more attention to actor preparation theories and techniques so as to …

The Interconnectedness Of The Roles Of Mentors And Mentees In Pre-Service Teacher Education Mentoring Relationships, Angelina Ambrosetti, John Dekkers
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
This review of the research literature focuses on the interconnectedness of the roles of mentor teachers and pre-service teachers. In order to examine the interconnectedness of mentors and mentees, the paper firstly delves into what mentoring is and what contextual factors influence mentoring in pre-service teacher education. It then examines the research literature on mentors and mentees and the roles they undertake in a mentoring relationship. Emerging from the examination of the roles is identification of how the relationship functions with regard to the mentor and mentee who work together to achieve specific goals. The paper highlights the fact that …

Parental Perceptions Of A Midwest Public Library: An Exploratory Study Of Chinese-Speaking Residents, Lingxin Ruth Yan
Graduate Research Papers
The United States has experienced the rapid growth of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) students in public schools since 1990. Issues concerning CLD students such as their limited English proficiency, school failures, parental involvement in their education, appropriate models of bilingual education and study resources provided by libraries have caused increasing concerns from policy makers, school administrators and educators at all school levels. Facing the diversity population reality, both school libraries and public libraries are called to become more culturally responsive in providing effective outreach library services to ensure academic success of all CLD students and meet the needs of …

The Impact Of Oral Communication Style Of Patients From Generational-Poverty On Health Care, Peggy Lyon
The Impact Of Oral Communication Style Of Patients From Generational-Poverty On Health Care, Peggy Lyon
Graduate Research Papers
Limited health literacy is a significant problem in the United States. It carries with it a high price tag of unnecessary medical expenditures, decreased quantity and quality of life for affected individuals, and frustration for both medical personnel and patients. Although most research has focused on print related health literacy, a significant part of the information exchanged in a medical encounter is verbal. It is well documented that persons in lower socioeconomic groups have poorer health. As some studies have found a link between socioeconomic status (SES), oral communication styles, and health care, the verbal exchange between health provider and …

"Cover My Pills": Contraceptive Equity And Religious Liberty In Catholic Charities V. Dinallo, Ayelet S. Lebovicz
"Cover My Pills": Contraceptive Equity And Religious Liberty In Catholic Charities V. Dinallo, Ayelet S. Lebovicz
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The note examines the tension between the New York Womens Health and Wellness Act's (WHWA) goal of promoting women's health through contraceptive access and its burden on the First Amendment rights of religious employers. It argues that while the WHWA advances significant public health interests, its contraceptive mandate imposes substantial burdens on religious freedom and free speech, necessitating strict scrutiny. The analysis critiques the New York Court of Appeals' decision for failing to fully consider the plaintiffs' hybrid-rights claims under Supreme Court precedent, highlighting the need for lawmakers to balance competing interests while adhering to constitutional protections.
